I'm unable to achieve this shatter exactly. The masks do not allow the shards to rise past a certain point, they just disappear as the mask cuts them off. The progressive downward shatter is also not being achieved, the top portion remains partially intact until the last Title comes onto frame. The shatter is then relegated to the lower middle of the frame, stuck between the masks.
Is anyone else having this issue at the 9:57 progress point?

When I apply the glow affect. I applies it to all the layers rather than the one like your tutorial.

I am trying to add the SHAKE effect at the end of the tutorial, I Alt-clicked the position and put in "wiggle(7," then dragged the pickwhip to the shaker effect and I got a message saying, "this project contains an expression error: error 1 of 1.
I'm trying to fix this, but it seems like the effect is not working because of this error.
What is the best way to solve this?

What did you do at 6:36 ? Did you clear one or combine the two? Dropping one into the other doesn't work.

After completion of this tut. I messed around with it for quite awhile and ended up with a batman type intro. Very Cool!!

There are some points that are missing your explanation.Like at 10:14 the layers 1 till 12 are shifted some frames to the right and when you later line up the yellow layers it doesn't add up lol..

Hi. Could you please do a tutorial on sequencing layers or show how you made the scripts for the sequencing? I've watch both of your tutorial (this and the previous), and it loses me every time I have to sequence. I'm using Ae CC. At least please help on some level if you don't want to make a sequence tutorial please.

I'm lost at around 9:50, my title just stays whole when I try to see the animation. I animated the mask to go down but the title doesn't break apart like yours did.

Maybe I'm blind, but I'm having a problem in AE CC where after I offset each frame by 1 after frame 11 there is a final mask going down erasing from the top down. If that makes any sense. It looks nothing in the video (where after frame 11 the whole title is visible)

Can someone please help me. At 10:12 why do all the layers (excluding the red one at the bottom) move back alot. when i moved them like that it messed up the animation. Please help!!

I am completely new at this and ran into an issue where the mask wouldn't work around 7 min of tutorial time. After trial and error I found that after copying my text 12 times my mask path was offset by 1 frame each. By setting the frame the same (mask path) for each one but still leaving a 1 frame offset on the timeline it seemed to work. This may not be the right way to do it but hopefully it will help someone who was having problems like me.

Okay I'm having an issue. Ive went through the tutorial several times and have the same issue every time. I get to 8m in where I am suppose to have the sequencer go and turn off the path. when i do this i only have the top box on the screen. any Ideal what Im doing wrong and how I can fix it.

at 6:36 you put the 2 text titles together.how did you do that? I have tried to precompose it and it wont let me shut off the fx later in the tutorial. any help would be greatly apriciated. love the glass orbs in a different tute. thats for the great tutorials and cs6 is awsome.

ive done it in full, without script, manualy moving layers, and only mistake ive done was bad metal background picture, it cost(ed) me a nice glow...nice tutorial indeed

Hi, i have a problem, I do everything you say exactly as you do it, but when i remove my mask path effect on all my duplicated layers, the animation remains and it breaks up as it is revealed by the mask. How do I delete this mask animation so the full text is visible, and then proceeds to shatter

At about 10:28 he moves all of the yellow layers over. Reason being its 2 cuts and I'm guessing he must have moved them over (or redone it) not on video so that the text sits stationary for a few frames before shattering. If you follow this video exactly then its an unneeded step if you just want it to start shattering immediately. Threw me through a loop so I thought I'd share in case anyone else got confused by why their sandstone colored layers weren't 14 frames over as they suddenly appear to be in the video.

Hey me and my 12 year old son are trying to learn this stuff and when you seemed to make a layer disapear about 1 minute before we were to add rectangular mask, you didnt tell us what you did; delete, merge etc? VERY frustrating. I just deleted it, not really knowing what to do. Please mention those small things so we dont get lost, thnx soooooooooooooo much

I think it's just because your settings are different. With the rectangle tool he is creating a mask, whereas you are probably just selecting the area. for me, using the rectangle tool automatically creates a shape so instead I go to layer, mask, new mask and then you can use the pen tool to edit the shape of the existing mask ("mask 1" which is around the whole composition), or the rectangle tool works too but you have to delete "mask 1" in order to see your new mask ("mask 2" work the way it did for andrew. there's probably an easier way but that's just how I do it

for all of you confused at what he did at 10:07 to 10:17. due to the time skip he never explained what he did. all you have to do is go to the red layer move the starting keyframe to whatever frame you want the shattering to start, Andrew used frame 14 as his start, and which frame you want it to end. Then you just slide the top 12 layer to the frame where the first keyframe is. Hope this helps

Its extremely hard to understand any of this even if i follow a tutorial. I have tried about 10 different tutorials now and couldn't even get through 1!!! Its ridiculously annoying to complete a 20-40 min tutorial for only a 30 second clip. Its just not worth it. please for future releases make something more user friendly. Thank you

Hey guys, I figured out a way to easily control WHEN the text shatters... Instead of adding the CC Pixel Polly effect to the text layer, add the effect to an adjustment layer on top of the text. Then you can just drag the layer in the time line wherever you want the shatter to take place.
I assume that there is a way to control that in the actual effect controls but until I find it, this way is super easy and works perfectly....

Hmm cant get it to work when i watch it over at the end the two red layers muck it all up by it doing the motion once of the text disapearing and then it disapearing again but this time with all the fx help please

Seriously. At 6:36 he switches to an entirely different thing. Just above where Text Title is, I do not have an option to switch off the effects. I only have Source Name, Mode, T TrkMat, Parent, etc.

im having trouble with the time cause in its entirety my video was 4 seconds and thats a bit too fast even tho i personally edited the word break section (until everything was crumbled into pieces) in the span of 1sec in length i even had to improvise cause u didn't show step before the explosion(meaning the technique u used to make the words stay for a while before they blew up),i realized that in the video u skipped the step where the camera zooms in on the words b4 the crumble as well.

Im using CS4 and this doesnt work. after making the 12 layers when i play it back like you do it does the break up of the letters all at the same time. from top to bottom. it looks super trippy like im on meth. its like each particle is behind another x12 .. like wtf.. im doing EXACTLY what your doing on your video and it still doesnt work =[

What was it that you did you do to one of your layers at 6:36 or 6:37...one of the layers disappears and that seems to be where I'm getting screwed up because then my masking doesn't work right.

Dear Sir I am having difficulty interpreting the 6:28 minute section of the tutorial to 6:40.
There are two layers you are working with that have slightly different effects.. When you start the next section you have only one layer... There is no explanation how or where the second slightly different layer went.. If I try and make a new composition of the 2 layes I cant control the effects and I cant continue any further..

Ok, so I have Optical Flares, and currently I am working on a project where I want the Flare to move down the screen, grow in brightness in the center, and as the light dissipates, the text appears from behind the light. Whenever I apply the effect to a solid layer on top of the text layer, it blocks everything out, even when I pre-compose the layer. I tried to put the effect on the text layer and it only filled in the text with the effects. It did the exact same thing on the pre-comp as on the text. I remember this tutorial and how it was used on top of the text layer, I was just wondering how to prevent the effect from blocking out all the layers below.

When I run the sequencer it doesn't even really offest the things, and it shows the whole text instead of how yours does.

Fantastic tutorial, Andrew! I'm just a little confused about how exactly your original frames moved further down the timeline... @10:06 the frames (1-12) are all lined up and offset from "0" on the timeframe, and (13) is as well - then we get to 10:11 and the frames are moved - making you have to line your "duplicated" files over to line up after applying effects and running the script... what's up with that, I'm almost CERTAIN I need to know. Waiting for your knowledge! Thanks in advance!

i think pixel polly cannot be used on after effects trial version to get pixel polly i think you have to upgrade or get the full version im not sure because i have the trial and typed in the search box at the top right where it says search help its says it is a third party plug in and it says all of the thirdparty plugins are not available on adobe after effects trial version.

i forgot to add the most important part of my trouble lol, when i try to slide the mask down, the top layer that is selected in the first keyframe comes down with the mask, instead of just the mask moving down the text

if some one (like me) needs to keep the main title on for lets say 40 frames or more simply click on the 25th layer press M, offset the Kay frames at where the animation begins (layer No24) and then.... Turn off the CC Pixel Polly effect! and you have an alternate intro

So I made it around half way (the part where theres only 12 layers) then i played it and for some odd reason the top of the letters wouldnt break until later when the bottom half is breaking. and i cant seem to be able to play the slides just by clickdragging the bar on the time line like yours, how do i do that?

ok so when i get to the mask part of the shatter when i move the rectangle tool down it sets all the work i did back to the stage where im just setting up the metal font for my text. done it over 3 times now keeps happening and now im pissed

I need some help... The rectangle mask tool is not working the way I need it to and I can't fix it. All it does is a form layer and then I when I change it to mask it just shows a rectangle going over my text but not excluding anything else, therefore I can't do the shattering effect from the bottom up. If you guys can send me an email helping me out on this, I'd be thankful.

Everbody, a lot of questions about the pixel polly. Here is the anwser: You can only get pixel polly with the official Adobe After effect. Not the tryout version. So you can't get pixel poly with the tryout version. So heres you anwser!

i was trying to use the pixel polly effect on screen video of myself walking on water and then breaking of into pieces. But the couldn't get the pixel polly effect to work on the video. So i try a regular video clip to see if it would work on that but it didn't work. Do you know a way to use the pixel polly effect on a video. thank you.

cool FX andrew! btw need some help. After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback, pretty annoying. It appears when i reconfigure shattering effect from this project and it works perfectly before. hit me up! it's a big help.

Very nice tutorial,I think I may have done something wrong,I just started using After Effects,When I watched this tutorial,because...duh it was Awesome...and Was wondering if u could help,my problem is that when the mask goes from the top of the lettering to the bottom in the finished effect.As its shattering down frame by frame until it hits the bottom there really noticeable black boxes the size of the mask,if theres anyway to fix this it would be very beneficial,Thanks!

Hi Andrew,
Love the tutorial. However when I drag the CC Pixel Poly onto the test title, the text disappears. The effect seems to be there as its under the text title's settings, but the title itself no longer shows up on screen. If you could tell me how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi there,
I moved the 24 top layers to the right in the timeline to when I want it to start exploding. The bottom 2 layers stay at the beginning. I have moved the mask keyframes to frame 77 (when the shatter begins) but for some reason the title begins to explode anyways on frame 2. Frame 1 is the title but it already begins to explode on frame 2. Any help would be appreciated!

I am a very big fan of andrew... i only am having a problem in this tutorial .. my whole animation mask starts from beginning and starts going down but the shattring effect instead of applying on each frame breaks only from the end.... thats is it shatters from below only and not from top to bttom ... how can i solve this????

Hey guys, im 13 and just got into after effects about 6 months ago and im loving it. The only problem with this tutorial is that the text explodes too early. I know that people have explained in the comments but if someone could actually record themselves doing it and post a link, that would would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Guys, Here are some answers to your questions that have worked for me. First off if you click on the download project button you will find a nice metal jpeg and the sequencer file needed for the project. 2) As for having some lead time before the text explodes simply move all of your twelve top layers to the right down the time line and leave the bottom two layers where they are. Then move your key frames on the bottom layers to match your masks on the top layers. I moved mine in 3sec so I had enough time to fade it in before it exploded. Then move on to the next step of putting it into a new comp.

TO ALL PEOPLE ASKING WHERE TO GET THE CC PLUGINS:
They are bundled with a legit copy of After Effects (i think 8 and up). You can purchase the Cycore FX plugins separately if you desire, but if you actually purchased your copy of After Effects, they should have been installed with your program. If you purchased AE and you don't have these plugins, reinstall.

I'm not very into this, but I just selected all layers (1-12) and then left clicked at them, go time and then Time-Reverse Layer. then I could move them around...

Hey andrew, i believe daniel and warren are correct. THere is a step/process missing between 9:00 and 12:00 minutes. Your base title (the bottom layer that enables title to stay on a sec or two) is lined up with the above 12 layers, then the 12 layers above are suddenly later in the timeline around 12minutes. This eliminates the ability to have the title remain unaffected the first second or two so the audience can read the title. Thanks for your time and pls help anyone

I followed the tutorial and it all worked out just fine. I only encounted a problem after i wanted to export it. I exported it as a "flash" ( swf ), but when i have a look at it, it looks nothing alike to what it was. The glow is gone, the shatter effect is gone. How do I export this title WITH shatter effect and glow?

For everyone trying to figure out how to make the title stay solid and delay the shatter just follow these steps...(the exact settings will be based on how long you want the title to stay solid before the shatter happened)
Select "Text Title" 1-24 and move them up the timeline to when you want the actual shatter to begin (I set mine at 40) After doing this I went down to "Text Title" 25 and I moved the mask path timeline down to start at 40. By doing this it leaves a solid text until the 40th frame and then the mask begins to animate right when the shatter begins.

Hi i was following the tutorial but i think i did somehing wrong along the way, im about 12 mins into the tutorial but when i play my render back the title doesnt appear at the start, the shatter following looks good, just the title at start doesnt show, any help truly appreciated thanks and great tutorial

Awesome tutorial! One suggestion though: you could precompose the text layer at the beginning of the project that way you could use any name or comparably sized graphic by editing said comp without having to do the whole thing over again.

OK EVERYONE,
I think what he did at 6:37 is for some reason deleted the duplicated track, because if you look, the second set of shattered text disappears. I am fairly sure he did not use any hot keys or shortcuts he just deleted it.

This "like all you do" is a fantastic tutorial! Thank you. Where and how do I find the "sequencer" script needed for this project? Also, at the mid point of this lesson where you start to mask the slices, it seems that all of a sudden you were back at your original text title...is this true or should I continue with the double version that I ended with in that segment of the tutorial. First I want to say that you, Andrew, and your Team do a great job here, please keep it up.
I'm realy new at AE and I've got an issue just like a few other users here.
I can't figure out which Hotkeys you press at 6:36.

Hey Andrew. Great tutorial! I got a simple question that's been driving me nuts while I try to create this effect! Every time I try to move the mask downwards when I want to make the ending of the mask path it opens up a 'Text Title' window. I do exactly how you mention it in the video, double click and move downward, however this isn't working out for me. How would I fix this issue?

Amazing tut, used it for a video. It's pretty simple, straight forward except a few places where the video jumps. After you understand what your doing you can manipulate it to suit you.

I trying to go through the basics so I can get into you DVDs exciting! I use AE CS3 and got stock in the (Alt Clic)k to input expressions to some of the values listed in the effects Control Panel.I used the Option key because I use a mac... still couldn't.

I saw this on a promo in our theater for a pro wrestling special. Whoever made the titles for it could have just downloaded the project file, changed the words, and picked up his paycheck... I might have been impressed if I didn't know that they just copied and pasted off of VC.

I'm with wolfy, I'm a bit confused. You had the 12 layers starting at 0.. then magically they started at frame 14. Plus when I put my cursor at the beginning of the 24 layers It doesn't have the full text there..but just portion of it that's masked. I'm lost... help would be appreciated, great tutorials though.

My only criticism is that you give keyboard shortcuts for window users only. I mostly use FCP Studio and I work alot on a macbook pro. We do not have a home key on the keyboard. Other than that, you have some of the best tutorials out there. Thanks!

hello.. okay so i have a problem see i've recently started using after effects and i installed the trial version of AE 7 and the problem is that i don't have many effects that i think come standard with AE but they aren't there.. effects like CC Pixel polly which is used in this tutorial or CC partical world (which I really want) aren't there so i wanted to know that do i have to purchase them or what?

Hey guys, this effect looks so awsome, but i'm stuck .. Im new in AE but i really want to make this. At 6:40 at the video, im supposted to do a mask, so i select rectangle mask, but when i try to make a mask on the layer, it creates white rectangle over the text, i tried to select the thing next to the star, i tried again and it looked like in the video but when i made a mask it didnt made a selection of the text but i just saw yellow lines around and i saw full text, not only selected part like in the video .. Can please someone help me with these? Thanks in advance

hey at 6 minutes and 37 seconds, you pressed something that merged the 2 text layers, i've been trying with no luck to merge them but not make a new composition because then i am unable to switch effects on or off without going into every single layer and turning them on or off. Is there a way to merge and still keep the text layer?

@Jim, I don't think there are any missing steps. He is just telling you that this is another idea based off the tutorial right before this one. 3D balls.

Just one problem though. Since this looks incredibly awesome and it's very satisfying once you get it done, I think you should do a follow up tut on how to explain some of the things you missed out in this one (for example, when your layers magically skipped from frame 0 to frame 14)

yo andrew, this tutorial is way legit, my only problem is at around 14:30 when u made the text 3D, when i added the curves adjustment, the smaller text started breaking up behind the front text. i cant seem to figure out how to fix this, ven with going back to ur tutorial and practically copying wut u did. please let me know wut u think. again great work and keep it up.

dear, Andrew thank you for such an awesome tutorial and this one was just coool enough to chill us down... i would like to ask you that in this tutorial wen u complete the shattering effect around 19.49 .ur frames are moved from 14 to 25 on the time line. that gave ur text a lasting effect and then blowing up .. i ma bit worried though that this doesn't happen when i try to do it will u let me know if I am doing something wrong..pls

Hey, so far the tutorial's great, just like all the other ones. My only problem is...that I'm not too AE savvy, so I wasn't sure how you seemingly merged the two layers together at 6:37. If you or anyone else could, please explain to me how you did that, because I'm kind of stuck now, since when I precomposed instead, I couldn't keyframe the rectangular mask without viewing the effect, and that leaves me guessing the location. Help would be much appreciated.

Awesome Only had to figure a few things out myself, and I got it going straight away! I wish I could afford that plug-in it looks amazing (and convenient).
The only way I can see improvement is to link the sound effect for the glass shatter, or put it in the project files .zip- otherwise, great!

that was a very nice tutorial. could you please give the comparison of AE versions.because i am using AE cs3.the pixel polly in your tutorial worked but for it didnt work.so kindly help me out. Saw this tutorial used in a Mitsubishi commercial here in Brazil. Same everything. Start to finish, just a different word. They used the same color, background image, and everything... ALTHOUGH, they didn't use optical flares, at least I don't remember seeing it... big shout out to Andrew Kramer for all the knowledge.. way to give back to the community!!

when i make the 12 texts and set it the peaces when it brake just leave a tail behide them and many of the peaces desipear from the start..
you know if something is wrong ? took the sequencer.jsx from your video "download project".
if you know whats wrong with it or what i am doing wrong plz reply

i tried this tutorial and could only get as far as the mask part where i was supposed to move the mask to the bottom of the intro text.
dont know what i done wrong but i messed up when trying to drag the mask to the bottom of the text.

wiggle for breakfast, with a lil bit of pickwhip, then off to office under the blaring lens flare..now here situation is bad...so run scripts and precomp...dont forget to save...add a little vignette...with some contrast....and at the end of the day....we have....well...i dont know what we have...But grt tutorial andrew!!!!...someday im goin to come down at ur place...and...brainscan u!!!!!!

Hey me again. this time i have a problem with cs3. during my work it goes not responding sometimes when im trying to save and i loose all my work. do you have any idea what might be wrong with it? im not expecting you to know but some thing i could try to prevent it or avaoid it would be nice. perhaps a autosave if you no how to enable them. thx anyway.

Hi Andrew. This tutorial is very cool but I have a problem.
At the 10:05 minute, when you have the 13 layers (http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5451/1005.png) the layers with brown are alligned with the red one. But after you fullscreen the project and say that we must add more detail, the brown layers are no longer alligned with the red one (they are moved further on the timeline). The problem is that you didn’t say how to disallign them. If I manually select and send them to frame 11, the red mask will scrool down, then the text breaks up.
How can I disallign the layers as you did without destroying the whole work?

There were so many situations where we gaped at the visual effects wondering how they are made, in which software they are made. I really didnot know After Effects is such a powerful VFX software.. The effect will start to disperse at the point in time at which your at in the video, so if you want it to wait a couple seconds before it starts to disperse, put the scrubber a few seconds through your video, THEN put the effect on that layer

When I start the CC Pixel Poly it begins to disperse the text on the first frame. I tried to adjust the force, and reset the default controls to keep the text sustained on the first frame, but nothing happened. It did not reset the text back to normal. Did I miss a step? What happened, and how can I fix this?

Great Tutorial. Very easy to follow.
Instead of using the Optical flares I used the built in lens flare. It's not really as good as the optical flare but still just about does the trick. I may purchase some of these very nice packs though.

You should definately still include the project files for tutorials. Its no about copying work, I think it helps when you can fiddle around with what you've made and it really helps me learn.

Completely out of context but, how do you keeps the shattered parts above the ground during the bullet promo video? the bit where the camera is zooming towards text and the they explode and the shattered peices blast away from camera. Is it to do with trapcode particular?

How do you open .jsx files? I went
File>Scripts>Run Script File then I chose the jsx and it opens a script prompt telling me to choose the number of frames to offset. What do I do? I want to edit this project and see what I can make of it but I still don't understand how to open up script files. Please help? But thanks Andrew this looks awesome from the tutorial.

Not sure how I missed it what I'm talking about is at 10:00 to 10:11 . It was not biggie all i had to do was move the mask keyframes on the red text layer over to frame 14 . But great tutorial.

How come all of a sudden the text layers were moved to frame 14 when you were talking about enhancing it and nothing was said about moving it messed me up lol.

Awesome tutorial, but wouldn't look better to have Comp 5 (as it was in the tut) a little higher resolution than the final comp instead of using motion tile? Not very noticeable, but makes it look a little better if you use a lot of shake.

I'm your number 1 fan and I wonder if you are able to create this animation in this video inrrabando the boy, I know it posivel be created in the (3D Max, Maya or Cinema 4D.'d love that you create one other the monster, even a dinosaur chased from you, of course, have to have the green background, the only one look at this awesome video.

Is there a good way to alter this turtorial or add an extra step to do somthing like Transformers? where all the pieces break up and then come back together to create a different word?
