Ha. 712 mph at sea level at 59 deg F and 29.92 barometric pressure. As you rise in altitude the air molecules become farther apart so the speed of sound decreases as the air becomes less dense. Like me for answering that question like a good dweeb should.

Another question. This all works great for a black background, but how could I go about putting a different background without messing up the look achieved with the transfer modes?
sawdeanz
Great tutorial! I'm having trouble with the transfer mode for 3d layers, which is demonstrated when he composites the orb into the 3d comp. I'm using CC2014 and none of the transfer modes work on the 3d layer.

Hey Andrew! You say that the Optic Compensation effect looks like the level up effect from "Bejeweled" - whatever that is...but I think it looks MORE like the opening credits to the old (and better) Doctor Who episodes. You know, the ones that were two hours long and aired on Saturday nights?!?! Awesome...

I'm doing this using CS6, and it's all fine until I have to create the new camera. I create it, and it does something different to my comp and I have no clue why. Then, when I add a null object and change it to a 3D layer, I can't move the null anywhere, it just becomes this thin red line.
If anyone can shed light on this and point out why this is happening, that would be much appreciated.

Hi Andrew, I'm trying to learn to use after effecst cs6 and I encounter the following problem in galactic orb tutorial you create a starting point, not as it is called, is located at minute 22:47, you say HIT START, good listening then I use the keyboard, and I wonder which is key in order to successfully complete the tutorial, you could show me how it works that key to create the orb!

Greetings from Norway, you are the best

Dude, no offence, but that's pretty weak. There are more than enough tutorials on this site for you to learn a whole bunch of different techniques which you could experiment with and use to make up your own effect. The site isn't called: GetAndrewKramerToDoYourWorkForYou.net.

Besides, learning different techniques, and playing around and experimenting and coming up with all sorts of different things is 98% of what makes After Effects so awesome and amazing to begin with. Don't be lazy.

For those having the issue concerning the opacity map(21:00) If you are you are using CS5/5.5. Click the opacity may control you will see a rectangular box with the opacity curve inside. Place your selection tool in the top left corner, click hold and drag across to the top right corner. This will allow the particle effect to remain constant. Make sure the map is completely filled. Hope this helps.

Hey William,

I know this is late, but if you are still wondering how to go about having the video "move" while you scroll across the timeline, there is a "Live Update" button in the area above the Layers list. You should see about 8 icons there; it is the 2nd one from the left. Looks like a square within a square. You have to have that enabled (clicked) in order for your video to move while u scroll across the timeline.

Yo Pilots!

I have some annoying problems key framing the particles as shown in the tutorial 22:36++

i got cs4 but when i do as shown in the vid my particles always fade around "00250" and its driving me mad!

what i do is simply:
go to the 00100 and then click on the key frame thing in the effects control, then i move forward and change the Birth rate to 0 also as shown... basicaly i do everything he's doing but my particles still fades (they freeze around 00100 and fade around 00200)

help!
Jake
I'm having the same problem! Around 200ish frames mine start fading out. I am doing everything exactly as stated in the video. I need help desperately!
Jonathan
I am having the same problem too, i couldnt solve it so i spent hours keyfreaming frame per frame, and it worked out perfectly
Linda
This had me stumped too. I made the keyframe, moved forward and turned the Birth Rate to 0 and the particles did not freeze for me as they do in the tutorial. (I have 5.0 and thought maybe it was something with the settings.) If you have 5.0 like me, be sure the Opacity Map pull down is set to "Birth to Death" (changing any of these will change your results) AND be sure that "Longevity (sec)" is set to something longer than your segment, like 20 or so. That should do it... On this section too, the "*" only marks the Time Ruler, not the "particles" layer like in the video, but this is no problem as long as you can see your keyframes and just slide it to the left using the keyframe indicator.

Hey

I'm a kind of newbie and here is my little problem:

At 20:07, you go in to the options of CC Particle World.... And Arghhh !!! I do not have this choice but only Reinitalize and informations.

I have trapcode particular and the choice "options" is there for this plug.

I use AE CS5.5
So, is there something to do to have this "options" choice shown in AE CS5.5 using CC Particle World ???

Thank you

For some reason when i try to make a new comp, mine says start timecode instead of start frame. And when i try to change the duration, it says 0:00:03:00. Any suggestions?

It doesn't matter his is basically the same but without the colon so font worry too much about it. But if you want to do it like he does delete all the zeros and colons and put in the same time signature as you see on Andrew's. Hope this helped.

What products were used that were not mentioned? Seems everything is inside After Effects including CC Particle World. He does say Optical Flares is optional and that is listed at the top under "3rd Party Tools"...

Check it out here:

Thanks Andrew Kramer and his crew so much. That's all I got to really say. I spent a whole 8 hours on this tutorial yesterday and Andrew spent a whole 45 mins. teaching it. I am extremely slow at following lol. That is okay though, well worth every millisecond. The things I had a hard time with was getting the 3D camera and particles to sync in correctly. My first time with particles in After Effects and it was a great experience. I learned so much. Thanks again. This effect reminds me of the multiverse concept Dr. Michio Kaku talks about.

Firstly,I am a Nigerian living in Cameroon.I love movies a lot.I want to be a movie maker but here in Africa,we don't have schools for that and the few that exist are very expensive and the teachers don't even know as much as you guys.I never new tutorials on softwares were on the internet. The first I saw was that of action essentials one and it was excellent.I specialize in graphics designing both still and motion and I also do video editing.I just saw some tutorials on action essentials two and Adobe after Effect on your Website and I must confess they are unbelievable.I never knew that was possible with After Effects and that guy Andrew Crema is a master.I Will appreciate if you could e-mail me any little movie tips. Thanks for helping me build my movie career.

@Andrew, @Robert about the whooshing sounds, In the overall sense of the cosmos large bodies and/or forces e.g black holes/galaxy have a proximal effect i.e they impact anything with tangible mass whose relative speed and trajectory is large or fast enough to be within a certain level of measurement in either distance or mass. It is not possible to skim over a collection lets say a system like our solar system at the speed of light with the vessel you are traveling in making a straight trajectory. To negate the proximal force which in this case is gravitational force the vessel has to right itself with a generated force or if it was flung with sufficient force it breaks through bands of gravitational forces without impacting its trajectory or speed. Here is when the sound is produced but is only heard on the vessel.

On the topic of the speed of sound:
Yes, it is approximately 343 meters per second, but what should also be taken into consideration is the fact that sound is produced through the vibration of air. Because space is a vacuum, there are no particles to vibrate; therefore, no sound is produced.

How can you put a video inside a picture please. I want to have picture of a tv and put a video like youtube inside the tv. it makes you look like watching tv. Thank you for sharing.
Robert
Make a new comp. Put the picture layer in the comp. Put the video layer above the tv picture. Set the opacity of the video layer to 50 so you can see the TV layer behind it. Scale the video layer to fit the TV screen and then draw a mask with the pen tool on the same layer to crop out the edges and make it fit into the screen. After that you can set the opacity back to 100. Tweak the feather settings on the video layer to make it look more realistic. That's the easy way.

The best answer was right.
Mach one, in 75 thousand feet might be like, 200 Mph, and Mach one, in like, 20 thousand feet will be like 900 Mph (I don't really know the ratio, maybe Mach one in 75 thousand feet might be 300 Mph, I'm not sure

Hey andrew. I know this is a bit too late and maybe you've found out before but...just to note that Mach is M=V/A. M=Mach, V=Velocity and a=the speed of sound in the medium. So basically if you're flying sea level, the speed of sound is 340 meters per second, and ur flying 400 meters per second. Do a simple 400:350, and u get 1.14. Consider only the first number because even if its 1.9 its still mach 1.

that guy actually gave you the best mach answer - why not just google - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mach_number

it`s roughly 333 meters per second, and no the metric system is not communistic

but the way you narration and content is beyond fantastic, you got a nice voice, but your video sucks

Hi Andrew,

I still consider myself somewhat of a newbie when it comes to AE, and your tutorials have been a godsend.

I have also been screencasting for about a year and am curious what your audio setup is. The positioning of the mic is unusual and has peaked my interest.

Thanks for your hard work and sacrifice. You probably don't hear it enough, but your work is most appreciated.

This tutorial is incredible! It hits on so many techniques that can be applied so many different ways, to so many different projects. Blending modes, masking, precomposing, rendering, expressions, 3d cameras, particle systems, color adjustments and a myriad of filters -- absolutely an amazing tutorial. If there was only one tutorial I could tell someone to watch to learn the most about after effects in one sitting, it would be this tutorial.

Thanks Andrew and everyone on the VC team!

He Andrew,

I don't like the sound in the preview. My sound was kinda hard when watching it. But it looks awesome! Tommorrow at work being busy again ^^. Thanks!

Hey Andrew! Fantastic to watch your new tutorials. Already watched all of them not once. It's like watching the Black Adder over and over again. Funny lyrics and fantastic tuts. I'm not sure about the camera on cause it distracts me from watching the tech stuff. I know in some way that might sound funny but I keep looking at you :-/ Anyway, alway a biggest fan. Best regards.
