I am loving the Particle world script and I find it very useful but I have a slight problem. After applying the script to Particle world as shown, when I attempt to parent the ccNull to another layer, the particle layer starts to behave oddly. For example if I wanted to parent the ccNull to a moving airplane image flying across the screen so the particles streak from behind the plane, the particles stop working. Is there a way to fix this? Are there any recommendations.

Never mind. I found out the problem. I named my layer CCNULL. In the expression it's, CCNull. Just change your spelling to match the expression.

im using cc 2014, im 10 minutes and 58 seconds in the video and i dont have the 'lens blur' but i do have 'camera lens blur'. how can i change the specular thresh hold and brightness?

I'm using CS6. The expressions in this tutorial (and many others) won't work. I've had other people check to make sure I'm typing them in correctly. Any advice? Thank you very much.

Can the text be replaced with a logo? When I've been trying to use it it doesn't allow the particles from the Pixel Polly to expand outside of the wire frame of the logo itself, unlike with the text where the particles extend beyond the text box itself. Any ideas?

Trying to do this tutorial with AE CC and there are differences for the software. I had to use CC Force Motion Blur, since Options menu doesn't exist anymore.
However, neither does Lens Blur and I can't find another way to adjust specular Brightness/Threshold. I tried applying Camera Lens Blur and could do a couple things from the lesson but it's not as robust as the old Lens Blur.
Any suggestions on how to achieve what Mr. Kramer is doing? I'm going to experiment with a curves layer right now.

This is a great tute! However when I download this it comes in OK and registers as 9.2 mg, but when i try to extract it says it is empty. I am wondering if it is just for Mac and not windows

The layer that has the word that does the explosion. When I duplicate that layer and change the word. It changes all the word in other layer. How to I do this to change just one layer but keep all the setting the same. In The sample video you have 2 word explosion but you didn't show how to do it?

Sorry to ask, but I can't link velocity (layer "particles", physics) to the control layer, as I can't make the needed sign for stretching and linking (looks like the spiral, I'm not sure about it's name. Is Camera Lens Blur the same as Lens Blur? It's the only one that has lens blur in it's name. I'm running CS5.5 on a school computer (we just upgraded to windows 7) so I don't really have the installation disk, so will Camera Lens Blur work?

hey guys. re particle explosion tutorial 94. I love it but cannot seem to get your expression connecting particle x,y,z positions to the null layer. Have typed it in manually and pretty sure it is exactly as per your expression you created. However, I keep on getting window error saying expression disabled. underneath that it specifically says:
error occurred at line 1.

layer: 3 ('particle'
property: 'Position X'
It shows same error respectively for Y and Z position as well.
Any ideas why this is happening? I have quintuple checked!

When I change anything that changes appearence of the composition, it doesn't automatically update while I'm changing it. Instead, i see the change once I'm finished. For example: If I scale something from 100% to 50%, I don't see the transition, but I see the object scaled from 100% to 50% automatically whem im finished dragging...How can I change that? Thank you!

Yup, no options button, but that is a CC thing (as it is a complete re-write per web chat info), not Adobe.
However, almost all of the "options" functions (in CS5.5) are in the Effects Controls tab. For example the "Opacity" functions are now under "Opacity Map" and you can select "Custom" in the drop down menu to manipulate the settings. "Depth" functions are under "Extras," "Floor" under "Physics" with "Floor Is" now called "Floor Action", etc.

The Particle World Script doesnt seem to be working for me i turned on the 3D layer and pasted the codes from the notepad file. Im using CS5.5. Nothing hapens when i move the ccNull

you forgot to mention one thing.........That half way through.....at 11:27 seconds in........you forgot to mention that the project was originally 32bpc then you say switch it to an 8bit.....how bad is this going to mess things up...and Editing this in CS5.5 is way different. like on the lens blur.....cs5.5 dont have the specific one....and they have a camera lens blur but the setup looks way different...any suggestions TY

Actually, I figured it out.
For all who have the same problem, here is the decision.
At the Effect Controls tab you have a little button with options. Click it, then click Show Animation Presets and you are ready.

I have a slight issue with the slider keyframes, the 3 keyframes have the values of 0, 150, 0 & I have got 4 sets of these on the timeline, however when I add another set it doesn't activate the particle world parameters that are linked to the slider.
I assume there is no limit to how many times the slider can be keyframed!!

Does anyone know how I could make particles implode to the origin and then explode? I just can't figure out how to reverse the explosion. I'm trying to avoid reversing an explosion in the edit as I think that it won't match and make for an awkward cut

I had the same problem finding the glow.png. When you go through the list of tutorials and click on particle explosion there are two buttons. One of them says watch and the other says project files. Click project files and download it. Inside there is the glow.png.

hi, i'm having a bit of an issue, probably because i'm using a new version of after effects, at the part where you put particle world onto the particle layer, on the video the black on that layer disapeared, while on mine, it didn't and i cannot see the stuff under it like the words, is there a fix?

I'm a full-time Ruby on Rails programmer at an unnamed startup in Silicon Valley and have recently discovered Adobe After Effects. From last Friday through Monday, I was on a chronic After Effects binge watching as many tutorials on this site as possible to finish my first 10 second AE composition. ( http://www.youtube.com/thirdreplicator#p/u/0/YSvPISfGSoA -- i know it still needs some work, but hey it's my first one.... cut me some slack.) Anyway, I went to sleep at 8 a.m. on Monday. Turned off my phone (before I went to sleep), woke up at 4 pm, put music to my video starting at midnight with Adobe Sound Booth (first time using it), then finished everything at around 3 a.m.. Needless to say, my dev manager, product manager, CEO, and office manager were on my case Tuesday at 1pm when I finally showed up. I told my boss it was "After Effects time," and it seemed to have a calming effect on him...(well, minus the eye-roll). Thanks for the tip, Andrew. You are the man.

For anyone having problems with the Z script for the particle world bit, make sure you have set the ccNull to a 3D layer so it has a Z axis for the script to reference.
Also for the motion blur pre-comp the particles (and then make sure you have the ccNull and Control layer in it and then add cc Force Motion Blur to the composed layer. Now you have motion blur

I'm using CS5, And I'm trying to link the particle velocity to the control with the pick whip, but its not showing up, I hit Alt & clicked on velocity, but the pick whip isn't showing up, Please Help!

I have a problem. My text starts shattering already by the first frame, but still staying in the same position the whole time, so no blowing up, but still shattering.

Just had to let you know...great tutorial, even if I didn't have the "out of focus" plug in. You may want to let people know, though, that the "options" tab is no longer available in CS5 - they will have to go through the "advanced" tab in composition settings. Motion blur is available down in the layers, but the "advanced" tab is where you tweak it.

Great tutorial! If you're having issues in AE CS5 then here's a few tips:
Firstly, there's no "motion blur" option. Instead, the particle layer needs to have it's motion blur applied (and the global one too).
Secondly, in the script for the ccNull object, if you're having problems, then check the syntax. Make sure it's typed correctly - that includes the capitalisation (e.g. "thisComp" and not "thiscomp" - note the C!).
Also, make sure that your ccNull object is a 3D object! I made this mistake and so there was no Z position (or position[2]) the script could work with. If you don't, then the script will error.

I cannot figure out how to get the time frame in seconds like you have it. Mine is fps, and I understand that you click command>click to change time measurements but it doesnt give me the option of seconds.

i went through the whole tutorial. you did it different from the first. the first one on the first part was like the wind blowing the particles from the bottom right upwards. in this. it was like both straight on explosions. first one was better but thanks

Great Tutorial...I used part of it for a church announcements...I could not use it all but will continue to see your tutorials it been a blessing for me..I am currently usin Adobe after effects CS5 great program I had for 2 weeks and I started creating some church announcements and tittles and my boss is impressed...I do not have a graphic course before but your tutorials are really easy to understand and are done in great details...need to slow down a notch so I can follow you more precise without getting lost. then i copied the word 'thisComp' from the expresions that we used before in the birth rate and now it says to me that doesn't find the layer 'ccNull', and of course my null object i named ccNull.
that expresion doens't work for cs4 or what is it?

Is it possible to set this project up so that you are able to edit the text at any stage?
As in, I could follow the tutorial, achieve the same results, and then go back and edit the text?

Anyone watching this tutorial with CS5 should read this. When you need to create motion blur for the particles, it's a little different than in this tutorial. Instead of hitting Option (there isn't an 'option' option btw in CS5', you need to go down by the timeline and click the motion blur box on your particle layer to activate it.

Oh, I figured it out. Just had to look VERY carefully and found that my null layer was not 3D (though I thought I had made it 3D), and that's why the z expression code gave an error.

I have suggestion. You should list every plugin and thing your going to use at the very beginning, that way those of us who dont have certain plugins like Particular can steer clear of these tuts.

how do you learn these types of things? My mom's friends husband works for adobe and got me AE CS4 for free and he still doesn't know all that stuff and how to make a lot of what you can make. Thanks for all the tutorials Andrew, you're the best!!!!!

The only thing I don't like about these tuts is when I get nearly all the way through them and then you say "now use this 3rd party plug-in that costs another $499, the rest of the project crucially depends on it." The other thing is that I guess this is in CS4 and I didn't know that until I couldn't find Resistance in the Particle attributes and then Textured Quadpolygon.
Still they are great and I love them, I just usually can't finish them and end in frustration.

This was a good tutorial like always.
but I mean a lot of these are getting repetitive, and nothing special.
