i noticed a 'SEED' option and thinking that its using a randomization algorithm based on a seed value. If you duplicate a particle system that has random generation of turbulence will it come out exactly the same due to that seed? Im thinking it will so you can change the seed value of the duplicate to get a completely unique duplicate with no extra work

I'm going through this tutorial again but trying to use Sure Target for the camera move. I've linked the Emitter positions to nulls and made the nulls the targets, however, Particular seems to completely ignore the Sure Target camera completely. Is there a way to make this work? I've made sure Particular is on Camera Settings for DOF, but still nothing.

Whilst the Draft 3D trick keeps the text in clear focus regardless of the Depth of Field, when i Render the Final Movie this is undone and the text is a blur nightmare - how does one render in Draft 3D / prevent the text from blurring?

i got a little problem with this "dolly" technique.
i am using a particle simulation by particular.
to match the real camera movement with the particles i created a camera and a 3D-null object. firstly the particles react when tweaking the null's parameters, but since i just need it for one shot in this whole timeline i trimmed the camera and null. now, after that the particles dont seem to be connected anymore. they just dont react, when i change the dolly's paramters.
pre comping this part doesnt seem to work as well.
i am running out of ideas..can someone help please?

I think I have same or very similar problem.
I can orbit around the particles with the left mouse key and everything is ok, until I animate the camera.

Hey Andrew,
Are you using AEP Cs4, because the menu is different and some of the short cut you give don't work. Keep making these video, for beginners and intermediate guys too. I hope to learn alot

If anyone more like me, has the rendering problem with de Draft 3D here is the solution. Before you start the rendering just click on "Optimal settings" beside to "Processing settings". In the quality field select "Current settings", click on Accept and that's all.

To those who end up with blurry text when they render, here is a previous comment that helped me resolve this problem...
"when rendering select "current settings," then click current settings and select your resolution (or else it renders at an incorrect size). Then the text blur issue is resolved."

When I render it disables the Draft 3D, I know this because when I`m rendering the text becomes transparent... helpÉ

Really great tutorial Andrew.
I did it today and it works fine. But i have one problem with the text and depth of field. I did it like you in the tutorial but when i render it to a short movie you are not able to read the text because of the depth of field. I don't know what i did wrong. Do you have an idea?

Hey, great tutorial, but i gotta problem. When the camera moves to the 2nd particulars(spor)the 1st one on the back disappears, so i can see only the text there. What might be the problem

Hey Andrew/someone that can help me understand.
My project res is 720p so larger than AK's (more RAM on order as i type!!)
At 14:13 AK adjusts his focus settings. Im fine with all except the focus distance, AK reduces is FD from 840px to 740px to focus on the particles closest to the cam.
I spent a while trying this but they just blurred more. I then tried the opposite, increasing the FD to around 1476px which then allowed me to achieve this effect...great stuff! I just dont know why!
Im not too hot with Camera's and lenses and so wondered if someone could explain it to me. Im thinking it is due to my project res or the particular settings. Any advice most appreciated. Thanks in Advance and thanks to Mr Kramer for this brilliant website!

Andrew, your tutorials have opened doors for me that I cannot describe. As a young actor in college, I do theatre, but my goal is film. Thanks to you I now have the tools, abilities and a boost of excitement that I never before thought possible. For those of you who do not know what Trapcode>Particular is, you can buy it from Red Giant Software. It is a Third-party Plug-in for Adobe After Effects. It will automatically install in the host program, and can be used with CS5. (I have it).

Hey, I have used this tutorial in the past, and I thank you for it.
Anyways, my computer is a VERY good computer, and it doesn't render nearly as fast as yours... Could you tell me why? Mine is set to half resolution, and it doesn't even render while I move the camera (I have to stop moving for it to render).

I followed this tut exactly and it came out pretty good but I'm having an issue rendering, the option "Draft in 3D" that allows you to see your text without it being all blurred, it works fine but when I render the video it removes the effect it doesnt stay on, anyone know whats up with this?

Hey man, great tutorial, really helped me improve my camera movements. I found a neat way to simulate the depth of field on the text objects, too. Just add a fast blue to them and set it to about .5 or 1 and add a wiggle expression with something like (.5,2) and it'll randomly blur and unblur, makes it blend a lot better.

I want to get the text in the middle of the thing don't know how to call it. But if i do it whit the camera orbit's it's only go around the text it's go around all of them :S

Ok Everyone. For those of you having the blurry text issue whenever you render your video. You have to make sure that ALL your render settings are set to (Current Settings). You can find these settings in the actual Render Queue or under the composition options.
Also you may need to save your project and reboot after effects again in order to see the changes take affect.

When you're ready to render, inside the Render Queue, select "Current Settings" instead of Best Settings and there you go.

Andrew, I need help with this tutorial. Disabling the DOF on the Type by pushing the DRAFT 3D Button does not work in a Final render. It works in the RAM Preview Version Only. Is there a setting I'm missing when I set up my Final Render? Rendering it in Draft form in the Output module makes the type bitmapped. Help Quick, PLEASE!

when i attempted to render my video footage my text renders blurry. i have draft 3d selected and the video looks fine during the ram preview, but when i publish it the text is still affected by the camera's depth of field.

Amazing. I just worked through this tutorial, and it was excellent. You are a natural when it comes teaching (and motion graphics!). I had a problem though. The "Draft 3D" toggle switch worked to trick AE into not applying DOF to my titles, but when I render out a final product, DOF is on for everything. Am I missing a Render setting I wonder...?

First of all good work on the tutorials, havn't seen any other tutorials like these anywhere else.
You have a friend here in Belize, anytime you want to take a vacation, Belize is just 2 hours from Miami.

Very cool Andrew, I love it! But I still have problem to do it. The only thing is the button draft 3d, it doesn't work when I do a render. Even your file. Everything is blured. I use an french after effect version....

after exporting the animation to .avi, is impossible to read the letters. when I see the animation in after effects, everything is all right, but when i see in movie maker the letters are something like "unfocus". :/

awesome example ... curous thought. the draft 3D switch is a definate work around anvd a quick one at that, but why not use a Null instead of the Text object, and then pre-comp and put a text field on a higher level and link the text attributes to the nulls inside the pre-comps?

Andrew, Awesome Tut. I am having the same problem as many others, in that when I render my text it is blured . In preview mode everything is fine though with the draft 3D button on This would be great if I could figure out what is going on.

This was one of the most helpful tutorials because it dealt with camera movements. Advancing camera movements is tricky with the camera position, etc. and this will help me a lot. I only have the particular plug-in, not the particular world, and this allows me to make it look a lot better as well. Thanks.

Seems i’ve the same problem as Raj, when I make a ram preview directly from Ak’s project, it’s perfect, but when i make a render, the text is all blurred out… What can i do ??

Got Stuck at the Depth of Field part..
- hit "a" twice on Camera, turned on Depth of Field
- click on the particles layer, but cant find "Full Render + DOF Square (AE)"
only see "Render Mode: Full Render" and "Motion Preview"

There maybe several reasons it takes so long for your "Ram" preview, but here are 2 things
that may help.
1. Go to "Edit", then "Purge", then "All".
2. In your Comp window bottom right
the "Fast Preview" button I use
"Adaptive Resolution".
See if those 2 things help at all.

This answered so many questions I had.
Now, it just needs a "PART 2"...
How to import an animated logo sequence from MAX. Something where the MAX camera is animated a lot on the Z axis like what you have done here. It would would be great if the camera simply went from one logo (with simple animated letters bouncing or whatever) to another animated logo, having the camera stop and look at each logo and then flying onto the next. Then, how to export that sequence with camera data into AE for Particular, Shine effects, etc.
Anyway... just in case you have some free time on your hands (yea, right) I'm guessing that with a new baby girl you probably aren't even sleeping much.

You really teach us to get the maximum out of Particular. @ Johan (sweden) you can download Particular from trapcode.com website I think. A trial version ofc. Seeing all of Andrews work, i'd say it is a must have

I loved it Really thanks Im from holland , en i used almost every tutorial in 1 film! I did get a A+ For the film and the school send it to the cinekid awards thats the most important filmprice in Holland! The film is about a person that founds a tombe in the forrest. Hey accidentely summons a demon, with consequences. I love your tutorials Andrew
