If you wanted, you could also adjust the brightness and make it slightly darker once the explosion goes off as if the camera is compensating for the exposure

Hey andrew! I am trying to learn after effects off of your websight, but i wanted to know, what is the most important thing hardware wise for after effects. I was thinking about getting an Intel Xeon 3.7gz overclocked. Is that a good idea?

It wont let me paste the motion tracked footage from mocha back into my AE.
I can paste it into the main screen where the footage is. But it isnt doing what its supposed to be doing.

I have almost done through this great tutorial.But with the shockwave layer when Im trying to set the keyframe assistant the "exponential scale" is gray.
I did the setting as Andrew said.I scaled a white, masked solid with 2 keyframes.But I cannot set the timings.

haha I know how to answer that! you need two shots: one from the street in a horizontal angle and one shot from above. ( might be difficult to get THAT). The you just mask out between the buildings (at the horizontal shot) and make the shot made from above appear between the horizontal which is masked out and the horizontal shot without a mask for the background Looks like( I I L ' )from the side ( the first I is the horizontal shot without a mask, the second I the shot from above and the L the shot with the mask. The " ' " is the point your viewing. then make the horizontal shot go upwards, maybe rotate it a bit and to prevent cutoff edges just use a CC sphere. Try it out and well.. good luck

if you don't track, then everything with just move with the camera, it will look fake, tracking makes it look like its involved in the scene. Even if you have the best looking assets it will never look perfect unless you track (which sadly takes a while). Hope i answered your question

My own experiment with the effect wasn't quite as good as Andrews however.

first it should be a desktop, with XP to make rendering faster, but if you have a laptop, you shoul have 4 GB RAM or more, to make render fast and don't take long time, NVIDIA VGA or higher VGA, windows 7, high-speed laptop and high CPU performance, if u have 2gb ram th render of 30 secondes will take about 30 min, that what it take on my laptop ......

If you have a channel and all that... at the top next to the search bar there will be a little link which is called upload... ope that and drag your movie into the box... wait for it to upload and there you go! if you have a mac an easier way of doing it is to open your movie in quicktime, open up the share bar at the top and click you tube

I JUST got After Effects today because of you Andrew. I love it and hope to buy the Action Essentials II pack soon but for now I will have to make my own stock footage. What a shame. Oh well! I have always been geared towards being a film maker. I can honestly say that from the moment I first saw one of your videos I new I wanted to be a Director for sure. It is my goal now. It used to be just a hobby. To further that statement I can also say that I will be helping my cousin out on his Vietnam movie whenever it enters production. He is much older than me too. You truly made a good choice in life, helping others, and I hope that I have made one too. I am happy to have found a great community full of people I can relate to. You have change my life and many others.

Hi there,
I purchased action essentials two on my old computer and after transferring the .MOVs to my new laptop I am getting a persistent error when trying to play those .mov files in After Effects. The files import but then lag AE and i get the error:
After Effects error: Error (4) reading frame from file (directory)
(86 :: 2)
All of the .MOV files play outside of AE whether through VLC, WMV, or Quicktime. Please help!

awesome tutorial....spot on.....
i had been trying to track the given footage with this tutorial in boujou and some other tacking software.... and all is in vain.. due to the extreme camera movements in between.... help need on that front... any suggestions....????

You are definitely good at what you do. I wish i had your talent. I am learning AE and after watching this tutorial, I want learn more. Just a few tips for you. I would have like to see some fragments hitting your arms or legs, and some blood coming out from your arms or legs too. being an old soldier, I know what those explosions can do. at that distance, you might have been thrown in the air as well. overall, you get a 10 from me. looking forward to other tutorials.

I enjoy doing this video effects.
i was wondering is u could do a tutorial without using greenscreen, of a person walking by a wall and then an explosion went of from the wall leaving a hole half the size of the wall, without the person getting hurt by ducking, and then the person looking through the hole in the wall seeing what ever on the other side, after the explosion. I was trying to do something like this but couldn't get both side, myself and the wall explosion on the same picture.

hey AK! It's all superb what you do. One question... have you ever considered to create a building explosions? Like flying concrete elements or wood, water blast, stuff like that? Consider you want to blow up the last storey of the building and you wanna see it from the ground. Falling pieaces of glass and concrete... I dont' know, would be cool to use it in a footage. I know AE is allmighty but, you know - ready to use, ready to go to the next project Also - the car or bus colisions. WOW that would be awesome! Think about it! Thanks!

Andrew, nice tutorial but aren't we already too dependent on your Action Essentials? I'm just saying it would be nice to see something different once in a while such as... a how to do make up and how well the camera responds to face colors, or maybe a little something on codecs and encoding, how to prepare a day of shooting, storyboard, etc. Anything except things that go k'bluey! Seriously, you should consider making a section for these kind of things.
Now on topic, your tutorial looks great, as usual, I haven't tried it, but if I ever do something that requires explosions and blast waves, I will surely use it as a reference. The tips on mocha were very useful.

Hey Andrew! How come you exported as a jpeg sequence when you could just use the original video file? Is it because you're showing us if we were editing just part of a video?
ALSO! CS5 can export the corner points with motion blur! I just pre comped the tracking and then parented all the effects to it (though I could of just used a null I guess) without all that extra stuff. CS5 sure is crazy!

hi andrew i am big fan of yours like your work a lot with your dry jokes anyway i tried to do your blast tutorial did everything the same but when i brought mocha data to null in the comp and linked explosions to the null it moves all over the place i mean it doesnt stay at the ground level like your clips even the camera moves but dirt charges stay on the ground level any idea what can be wrong i watched your tutorial over 20 times to get everything the same

Awesome tutorial and a wonderful combination of concept,perception and technical knowledge.Sir is there any concept of morphing one image to another image in AE ? it will be more interesting if there should be a combination with some 3D Applications such as 3DS Max or something.Thanks !

A couple of points here. In Mocha, you are trying to avoid getting your head in the track. If you make a second layer, and draw around your head, it will subtract the top layer from the ones below it. Clever huh?
Also, use this free script for import/export, it's way better than the cut/paste method:

Very nice. I did the same effect in a movie I just finished using Action Essential 2. I blew up a house on the other side of a lake and had the shockwave rush across the water and shake the camera. Here is the link to the trailer.

There is a brief shot of the explosion in the trailer.
99% of the special effects were done in AE using the skills I learned from Andrew. Everything from background replacements and keying to gun shots and explosions. As you exported from mocha, which I tried and failed miserably I went like... Man he can't never get that explosion to work, there is no way.
Untill you started making markers and it just blew my mind to motion track within motion tracking.

Great stuff! Much appreciated with a little sidestep into Mocha aswell. I find planar tracking to very often be superior to AE's point tracker, and as it's now shipped with AE I think many of your fans would enjoy more Mocha tutorials (myself included)

Hmmm i was expecting something a little different... the fact that action essentials kit contains growin-up dirt explosion is great, however how about an other surfaces ? I thought you will be using 3D simulation for this thing. It is also matter of the "clone" effect that may come up if you stick only with these ones elements, meaning along the time your elements will be so much obvious for people who make VFX, and all of an originality goes away.My guess is that you would probably do that but in this case you've already had what you needed to complete the shot or more specifically you could just change the enviroment so that it fits that one element in your collection. Nice but not good enough for someone who has to do things as they are supposed to.Otherwise good trick with the mocha, guess alots of people didnt even know that, this is existing in the universe

I look at this website every day, and I love all the tutorials, but I rarely comment on them. This one, however, definently deserves a thank you. I have such a hard time with motion blur and tracking points, and it really started to frustrate me. Thank you so much for showing how to fix that problem!

Hey Andrew. Don't know about Mocha for AE4 for Mocha for AE5 is able to export data and paste it right into the null object so you can avoid all the other stuff you did... But you probably know that

And those who mention the roto brush in CS5, you should really watch the entire tutorial before commenting so quickly. Andrew does mention it, but he also mentions something very important in a production pipeline... know what is going to be noticeable! When you are working on a real-world project, if you know techniques to do something quicker that looks just as good (aka, not spending precious time doing tedious work that is overkill), you will be a greater asset to the production team and probably will advance faster. The key is knowing which techniques are appropriate to use at which times. And the roto brush would definitely be overkill on a shot like this example.

I was going to say the same thing about exporting the transform data directly from Mocha instead of corner pin. I rarely have a use for the Corner Pin tracking data in Mocha. The transform data gives you much more flexibility. But it all depends on your shot and what you are trying to track into place. I had to watch the tutorial twice to make sure I wasn't missing something about why you used Corner Pin. You might need to post an "Addendum" to this one to show people that there is a quicker way built into Mocha. The compositing part was informative, though.

What we miss is shockwaveson the ground. one can see that ground is not moving. In such powerfull explosion, ground would “dance”, not only shake. So people, if you want the real thing, probably FORM should be envolved (If not 3D).
Also, some camera movement should be envolved, little zoom, and particles ricochetting from the lens of the camera (leaving small dents and scratches on it)
So Andrew, we know you can do better.
Go further, go harder, go over your limits.

it's a great tutorial, but unrealistic because the invoriment ( the rocks on the ground ) dosn't move. nothing get's affected by the explosion.

Also, CS5 comes with a new feature "RotoBrush" which actually makes it alot easier to roto yourself out instead of masking frame by frame.

You can use "Transform Data" instead of "Corner Pin Data", that way you get a null object, and you don't need to re-track in AE, maybe you knew this, but I don't know why you didn't.
