But i have a question. The 3D-glass-shards are looking very realistic. But i miss their reflections on the car. How would you create such reflections? Would you create a mesh in 3DMax(for exmaple a car-door-mesh with reflection map) or is there a solution in After Effects? Especially for bumpy surfaces.

P.S. car windows such as the drivers, use safety glass which means sharp shards won't fly every where like a lot of people think. Instead they shatter into millions and millions of tinie tiny pieces around 2mm around. Just some constructive criticism. thanks

when i was tryin dis out...in d rendered tiff file there is no effect of those camera movement when i brought those files again in AE...Enlighten me plz.. D glass pieces are not moving at all in AE...N ya,This tut is awesomely good...

lol. i followed exactly the steps and after running the script and opened it in 3ds max 2011, again another problem occur. The position of the camerar and the position of the null object is not in the place it should be.

Can anyone tell me why my text isn't staying on the Y Axis? I followed all the steps but when I play through the video, the text angle does not correspond with how my camera is orbiting around. It stays in the same position, but is always facing my direction. Please help!

Cool tut, but its not reaalistic that the window would break like that.. Here the window kinda explodes.. But in real life it would kinda crack.. And the pieces would be a lot smaller.. And probalyit woud be some pieces of glass left in the window.. Because the whole glass dosen't explode because the head is dunking into the glass.. It should rather crack.. And it should be som pieces of glass left in the window..
But, its a very cool tut anyway.. And I love your work.. Its really helpful..

BTW, I found a modified AE3D export script that exports a Phyton script for Blender for all who use Blender:

To use it: Run the script in AE and export to Blender py-File then switch to Blender, Change one view to text view, paste the content of the py file into it and hit ALT-P (that runs the script).

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the very impressive tutorial! One thing that makes me bend my mind is how to create the reflective map. I use the free Microsoft Live-Tools to create panoramic picture but yours look more sphere like and Blender seem to love those more (I am not too experienced in Blender i might note). @Andrew Krammer - You mentioned that we need to dolly the camera and then later give it the rotating effect by using AF. Would it also work if we rotated the camera at the scene and then just added in the glass with 3D Max and make the glass rotate together with the footage instead? What are weaknesses you think would be seen if we did it in this method? Thanks.

Great tut Andrew. For all the Cinema 4D users the shatter effect could be replicated with a extruded plane and plugin Thrausi or Xbreaker. Can't want to test this integration. Thanks Andrew!

Totally awesome tutorial! Is this the same affect that is used in the TNT TV commercials? You know the ones showing the upcoming season features. Many of them are shown as still frame and the camera dollies around with a 3D effect.

Been watching your stuff for a while and come back frequently.
As a photographer/videographer I noticed something about your shot that I'm not sure if you are aware. You are getting flickering/banding from the 7D you are shooting with from the florescent lighting. This is from USA electricity running at 60HZ. Be sure to shut the shutter speed at 1/60th of a sec (or a derivitive there of ie:1/30th, 1/125th) to eliminate that. Maybe you already knew that but had to shoot it a certain way due to circumstances. Keep up the great work!

WOW!!!!!! Andrew, you have done an excellent job. Your tutorial keep me interested because i start having thoughts like "so thats how they do it in the commercial."
i love all of ur tutorials. i do have after effects but that kind of stuff is to advance for me. even though i dont know how to use after effects that well, u keep me hooked into ur tutorials (as i said above). This effect that u did was one i saw on a commercial for a TV show and i wondered so much how they did it. You are a very smart man

This may sound really dumb but how did you make that HDR image for the reflection? I haven't been able to figure out how to do that.
Also how do you know what "mm" is closest to the camera you shot with? I use a Canon HV20 and can't find that info anywhere....

i am still not understanding why you have to make it half res to get the 3d effect. anyone?

You need to do that because if you don't, the camera just looks like it's moving along the axis; which it is. But if you zoom in, it essentially looks like the camera is orbiting around the car rather than just sliding past it.

Nice work.
The Z-Depth detail to produce Depth of Field is easy if you export as an RPF sequence from MAX rather than TIFF, as it also embeds alpha, camera position and Z-Depth.
Import it via the animation menu in After Effects, and you can add an adjustment layer containing a blur effect. Luma track matte it to the imported Z-depth layer and you have it. Easy!!

The trick which is the end of the video half res stuff. That was brilliant Andrew! Maybe there are other words to describe this like awesome, cool, oh my god, but I choose this word. It's like a magic! And I always wondering how did you found that technique. That was experimenting result or an accident?

Very nice, I would have accomplished this effect similarly, the only thing that surprised me was that you used the tracking data to stabilize the footage and create the effect of it rotating around a main focal point.
Now I want to see a tutorial of adding the glass being reflect off the side of the car. ;D
