I was curious, Would it also be possible to simply mask out some of the mountains and save them on separate layers, then proceed with some of the work you are doing, or would that be too much to animate? I can chop this scene up very quickly and layer it... I am a bit of a noob so I cannot look ahead to see if this would end up being more work or not...

After setting the mountain shot to Alpha, it doesn't "mask" the valley. I review the tuto a couple of time to see that under the black solid in the Mask layer you have an option that said ADD and I don't have it (I am CS5). Is it for that that it doesn't work. If yes how to solve that. Thank you

Hello, i see that tutorial, and i try make that, but exist a error. When you create the roto, alpha matte, dont work with the Grid effect. I try many times, and dont work, so i trun off the Grid and works. With Grid all "Solid" is black.

You know you can change it to 64bit by installin the 64bit version of windows , linux .etc

and so you don't have to lose your files ( or put a whole computer in to your external hard drive ) , make and image of it . to download it like alcohol 120% or virtual clone drive . if you don't know what an image is just search about it on google .

p.s after making the image , format it , download 64bit , and then download the image.

You have closed the Toos window. Simply go to Window>Tools. This will bring the tools palette back and you should be good to go.

Hi Andrew,
I think tutorials like this one are great. Seeing everything brought together adds an excellent "workflow" layer to the lesson. Even though I already knew how to do most of the individual tasks presented in this tutorial, I still took a lot away from it in terms of thinking about the overall process from asset preparation (like starting with a Photoshop composition) to refining my results. Great stuff! More like this would be awesome.

He adds null objects and parents them to other layers. By doing that the null objects, which have the correct position information from cameratracker, give their position information to the parented layers, so the layers (e.g. the mountains in the background) appear to be inside the scene and move accordingly.

anyone know how to track object to something on the view of moving camera and when the object is no more on camera sight, it still on its place, then when the camera move its view back to the place we put the object, we can see the object still there.
or perhaps like this, i pan my camera view around a wide empty landscape and something to track. i want to put houses or maybe trees there, but wherever i pan my camera around and come back, the object still there. i hope someone understand..

This tut reminds me a lot of the work I had in 2004!

Actually you can make some of these flying type footage with 3D Terrain apps, if you are into 3D.

Hey Andrew, great tutorial the castle shot looks amazing im curious just how much you can manipulate the camera, or if you would have to make the entire scene in 3d in order to do that. Also I'd like to see if all this rotoing could be made alot easier by using the auto-roto from cs5 the drawbacks of using that and if there are plug-ins that can do essentially the same thing for cs4. I'd also like to just say that I love how your tutorials are all universally useable techniques and even though you show a specific purpose such as this ominous looking mountain ridge, the idea of rotoing, 3d tracking and set extensions can be used in any situation, and all of your tutorials are made in that fashion and that's what makes you, in my opinion atleast, the very best effects teacher.

Thank you Andrew for the set extensions footage- I was really surprised! Hope everyone still visits Artbeats site, I spent at least an hour combing through it last night and they have a lot great footage, nice clean site, and good resource.

Your tutorials have had a huge impact on my work as a photographer and digital artist. It's been life changing.

Another fantastic tutorial, great to learn how to work on bigger projects and tie in alot of the stuff we have learned from other tutorials.

I just want to point out that it would be good to see some more shorter tutorials, I dont mean to sound like a moan. I watch alot of tutorials at work on my iPhone on my breaks and the shorter tut's work best for me that way. Sometimes the tutorials are getting that long I feel I need to make an appointment to watch it or get some popcorn incase I begin to starve.

It's all about Art man get Pshop down and learn to meld your particular style with the digital tools they can be used to enhance whatever you do in traditional media. Sketching tracing and cleaning. The net is a great resource and Andrew is a great Teacher you can learn a lot by replicating his tutorials and learning to think beyond the restraints of the particular effect described to embelish and tweak. You are learning a set of tools. To become proficient at any Art requires practice and repetition. Just keep Drawing and Painting and learn all you can.

Hey Andrew,
Thanks a lot for the enormous time and effort you put in all of this..really priceless..

There's one problem though..normally the mountains u added (and the café in the other example) should grow bigger as the camera gets closer to them towards the end of the shot.They seem to maintain the same scale all throughout and that is perspectively wrong since the camera is getting closer to them;and keyframing their scale values will simply create abnormal stretching and a floating effect.
I'm wondering if there's a trick to get around this problem.With all creativity I'm sure you'll find one!

Well, since all the layers are 3D, that should take care of itself. I guess you could try with a different camera lens, but then again all you have to do is to match your 3D tracked data (setting up a focal length similar to what was actually used, if possible) and let the flying camera do the rest.

Great tutorial. Was playing around with Camera Tracker not long ago - was very excited to find something as affordable! I was happy to see you messing around with it, as the null-reference approach is much more straight forward than the prescribed - "define origin", "define ground plane", etc, technique that The Foundry suggests.

Question: Under what circumstances would you choose to jump from more of a 2D matte painting technique to integrating actual 3D elements? Since you can export the AE camera tracking data into something like 3DS or C4D, would there be much gained by the slight changes in perspective on those background elements? Did you try that first, and decide it was just much faster to composite the 2D image for the brevity of the shot.

I know it always comes down to time and money, but would appreciate any insight.

thanks for this, andrew. another great tut. I have found, when moving objects that i place in tracked 3D space according to a null objects position, that moving the anchor point, instead of the position, does not effect the object and create a "floating in space" effect. it seems to work okay for me.

That's so COOL! I remember a scene of Battle LA that had something like this. like a helicopter going over a hill, panning over the hill to the destruction. Maybe the hills in the movie weren't CG. i dont know

Sorry, but I don't like the way the videocopilot is changing

to make get the same result we have to spend much money for software and footage. Probably the majority of people using VC, haven't got those hundreds of unneeded dollars to spend for it.

I think Andrew is trying to show us some more advanced tutorials and they require additional tools to achieve. You may not be available to afford it yet but this tutorial will help you understand more complex shots. Good luck man.

It's obvious, but it's not as easy to found good footage as to download pirated software. Probably not many people here have legal software, but it's good to use student discounts. In my opinion buying programs is much more valuable (can I say valuable?) than buying footage : / For non-commercial use this videos shouldn't cost more than 50$ in my opinion and I'm convinced that producers would earn more in this case.

Michal, if you follow videocopilot from the beginning you will understand that Andrew can't just teach the same all over again and if you want to maybe make a living out of this thing in the mayor leagues, you better learn these more advance techniques and software... where do we get the money for all this, $10.000 dollars boujou etc?.. we don't, this is the internet baby, look good enough and you will find anything, then in the real world out there when you make the big bucks... you buy it with no remorse.. Peace!.. ; PS: Invest in videocopilot software at least, can't get cheaper than that.. ; )

I do. Andrew is providing professional tutorials for free! You can't expect to get professional results without using the proper tools, which cost money. Not only that though, but he always tries to find a way to make it affordable for the community. He's basically giving away Optical Flares for $125. It's being used in Hollywood movies!! $250 for a 3D motion tracking software is also dirt cheap compared to others and the output is amazing. He still makes plenty of tutorials for the average user who doesn't have all of the third party plugins necessary. Andrew is taking it to the next level with this new series of tutorials and for one am excited about it.

For those complaining about the price of the software and the dedication of VC tutorials to focus on expensive software... well.. VC sells plugins for AE. It makes sense that VC would be dedicated to tutorials that are in the interest of their business model (not to mention the interest of serious compositing with $eriou$ tool$). If you want, you can apply MANY of these concepts that Andrew provides for free to Blender, GIMP, Cinelerra, Wax, Voodoo, etc (all powerful and free video/photo editing software tools). The interface and limitations may be different, but I would hope that the CONCEPTS learned here can spur creativity and methodology that can be applied in other compositing and 3D applications.

Thanks for your time Andrew. Very inspiring to this Cinelerra/Blender user! For tutorials on less costly (but more querky) video compositing and animation tools... search google/youtube. Then retool the VC concepts to work in a different environment... put the hamster in your head to work.

Well, since he had to purchase the stock footage, it is probably against copyright laws to re-release it, etc. The tips and suggestions in these tutorials are to use with different footage anyway. The learning isn't as valuable when you use the same tutorial footage, etc.

Check out voodoo matchmover, it's a freeware camera tracker, and is good for learning the basics of matchmoving. It's definitely not going to give you results like CameraTracker or Boujou or whatever else you would pay for, but it should be adequate for this tutorial. And it's free! So it's worth a try.

Also, if you do try voodoo, there is no export for AE option, so export for Maya. AE can read the .mb tracking data.
