Quick question:

You showed how you would colour correct to give a more 'cinematic' look, but outside of the context of a tutorial, would that normally be left until the editing stage?

I'm just thinking that if I have a scene to edit together and all the other footage is 'direct from camera', it would be way more difficult to match the colour corrected VFX shot with the 'raw' footage than leave the VFX colour correction alone, and do it all in one pass at the editing stage.

I feel really silly responding to a two year old comment, but here goes. I looked at the video, and it seems like he used the same footage as Andrew Kramer, but followed the tutorial and did his own work. If you ignore the obvious use of the footage and look at the actual VFX it is (in my opinion anyway) clear to see that he made his own version of the portal that was taught above and used that for his reel. Some obvious markers of this include the girl's hair on fire in one shot, and the particles flying at the camera from the portal being far less subtle. I do however applaud you for finding this and trying to bring it to Mr. Kramer's attention as you obviously thought that his exact work was being stolen.

Downloaded the project file today and the smoke video plays fine but when i try to move it to the comp it says its damaged or unsupported. Anyone else having this problem, or does anyone know where to get another smoke video. Thanks

Hey, I mainly watched this tutorial for the portal part (it's gonna double as a kickass cloud), for now I'm just trying to have the smoke cluster on top of a white background, but when I set the smoke to Screen, it'll appear transparent no matter what I make it's color in Tint, if you come up with any possible solutions I'd really like to hear them..

So yea, The smoke precomp is on top of a white layer, and I've changed the smoke's color to where it should definitely be distinguishable from the white background; yet when I change it's mode to Screen, it "disappears"... So yeah I'm not sure if I completely understand the screen mode.

could make some tutorial how to import 3D objects in After Effects CS4 at MAX but that can rotate and move everything you want is that I've seen that can be imported into 3ds photoshop and then save it as psd and then import it to the after but my pc does not support 3D in the phoshop .. there is another way to do it but not TARGA or anything ... I'd appreciate it very much ...

About that depth matte thing, I once saw an 80's TV episode where a character pokes his head out of a wall, and they masked out the nose, and then had the mask grow larger, and it looked real. Your trick is cool too. I never would of imagined using the exposure effect.

use the automatic masking feature in cs5 or mask it yourself. you don't have to be to accurate because the glow will cover some of the edges.

I am now at 16:50 in the tutorial, I set the smoke element to screen, but it won't. When I toggle on the transparency grid, the only thing I see is the element underneath my white portal although it is supposed to be on top and transparent.

My advice for you, don't jump on hardest tutorials at the beggining, go one by one, and you will quickly improwe your knowlege, go through all the basics, then start watching tutorials from the very bottom, from each tutorial you will learn something.

buzzie114 is right; this one is kind of advanced, as Andrew warns. However, I don't know about Max, but in good ol' Blender I have had some luck standing up a plane and then using a vid clip as a texture. It's probably not the right approach, but it works. Try Googling compositing video in 3DS Max. G'luck!

Don't listen to "everyone." If you're used to Macs, use Macs. If you're used to Windows, use Windows. The tools are basically the same on each. Use what you know. If you're a first time buyer, just get either machine you're used to and spend as much money as you can afford to get the best deal on a crud ton of memory, disk space, video card, processor speed and the tools.

I use DSLR cameras, and i have a stupid trick,
I chose the color, then before i tweak any control, I slightly move the color diagonally , left and down, and magically i have a cleaner matte,
Andrew, i wonder what kind of music do you hear when u are making visual works, or just simply training your eyes ?

the depth matt Andrew uses for the Z-depth pass is basicly a still greyscale image and as such can be generated in Photoshop. If you take a screen shot and import it into PS, use lasso tool to isolate areas, then use the gradient tool and the paintbrush tool to fill it in. Make sure you use pure grey colours and that you make the depth matt on a seperate layer to the imported still then it will have an alpha channel. It will not be as accurate as a matt generated by a 3D program but with a little practice it should work fine.

Basically, particular has a built-in smoke particle. So with that, you don't need a looped pre-rendered smoke like what andrew used here.

Andrew, couldn't this technique be done without the 3d map of the woman? A series of masks might have had the same effect if animated properly and they might have taken less...

Nice tutorial anyway, but I'd be more interested in how you made that orb break(I know you offered a quick how to in the other video, but an in depth tutorial about that would be awesome). General glass breaking in slow motion is always very useful. This has, at least for me, limited usefulness. Anyway, thank you.

Sure you could animate some masks to achieve the same thing, but to get the subtle reveal that he has created here you would need to animate many masks. Each "level" of depth would need it's own mask. This is not simply scaling up an ellipse that starts at her nose. This is a very professional solution to an effect that many AE users have tried (myself included) and not quite achieved.

@djenkins - I don't know, generally I don't make stuff, I'm a compositor and a animation artist and do corporate jobs mostly but it's always nice to see techniques done; however, like I said before this, for what I do has limited usefulness.
As for the masks, you might be proven wrong by someone with a decent hand at masking... creating 3-4 that would be feathered would give you some leveling of the brightness(thus z-depth)...

Thanks man! IMO, maybe you can speed things up a little, like saying the shortcut for duplicating is ctrl+d and after that just duplicate it with that shortcut (same goes for copy/paste). Things like that might speed up your tutorials a little and keep the tempo up a little. Grtz from Holland!
