I recently watched this tutorial again because I am looking for a very specific effect and I thought this might work but I need a slightly different functionality. I know this is a crazy question but is there any way to have the shock wave disperse from a text mask? I want it to "shock wave" out from the edges of the outline of the text layer instead of in a circle shape. If Anyone knows how to do this please share the solution.

Additionally, if you can figure that one out then the next level would be figuring out how to do it in 3d.

Any help on this matter would be so very awesome!

Thanks,
Lee

Hi Lee, Check the Saber Plugin tutorial where Andrew make something close to what you want around some text and see is you can insert somehow a pre composed shock-wave, this is just an idea, it may work also check Element 3D I'm sure you can insert custom layers, I mean I wish I can point you on the right direction, sometimes watching different tutorials and trying to combine them together can lead to unexpected happy accidents and great results. Good luck and share what you do, I'm interested on seeing the results.

This happens because your laptop performance is poor to load, you can improve this by try one of the following these steps:
1/ Delete the programs you never use
2/ Level up your laptop performance (Change the size of virtual memory)
3/ Restart regularly
4/ Run only 1 program at a time

Alex

Hold down the Alt key (option key on Mac) and click the effect you want to change the time for. Then type in your [removed]that's what the "time*150" part is called). You can check out some useful expressions over here: https://ukramedia.com/16-useful-expressions-in-after-effects/

How about if I wanted this to blast in 3D space (forward) since I can't just rotate layers in 3D space. Fractal noise doesn't do 3D so what would you use as an alternative?
I wish I was there at NAB to say hello right now

That is a good question. I would probably make the effect using the same progression but on use the alpha as a displacement effect with CC glass to distort the starry background. make sure your object clears the shock-wave and it's dissipated before changing the camera perspective to follow. You can then use the linear fractal and glass displacement to follow the path along its background. I hope this helps.

I use AE CS6 and I have all the effects that list in the report in my AE, and I have the same problem with other projects that I downloaded online. Can someone help me?

So did you install the VC Color Vibrance plugin from here: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/color_vibrance_plug-in/
You need to click the red button that says "download plugin". If you did that, make sure that the plugin folder is put into the plugins folder in your After Effects application folder, which should be somewhere in your computer. Just search for it using Windows explorer or Finder if you have a Mac. I checked and the Color Vibrance plugin should be compatible with CS6. If all this doesn't work, just try doing it from scratch, it's excellent practice!

Thank you much for your time, Mr. Andrew. Now, I need to practice doing it a lot even from scratch until I get the hang of it. I'm facing two problems. One, making it large, and two, the time-remapping thing. I still didn't get to the point where it feels "explosive".

What is the difference/benefit to rendering it out and bringing it back in vs. just using duplicates of the precomp?

1. Faster.

2. It's more comfortable to deal with now that you finished building it.

Hey there Manny,

I was having the same problem as you and many others. Before applying the adjustment layer that would cause the line of fractal noise to be transformed into a ring, I noticed that I would get blurry lines, which once you apply the adjustment layer turning it into a ring, you would essentially have a "Halo" Effect. The problem isn't with any of the settings for the mask, or the position or anything else like that. It's a simple answer. Are you ready?

- Select each wave Layer (May have to do this one at a time)
- Click "Layer" at the top of the screen.
- Then select "Solid Settings"
- From there, change the color of the solid from the Dark Grey that was initially selected, and change it to Black.
- After that, re-scrub your seen and the blurry lines or halo effect will be gone.

I was going to reply to your comment rather than make a brand new one, but the site wouldn't let me for some reason.

Oh! Moderators, Please disregard my previous post asking for assistance with this very thing.

Hope this helps you and everyone else!

Have a good one!

Hey There Andrew and the Crew at VC!

So I have read through the comments, and I'm not sure if I overlooked one, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction, or confirm what I am already thinking.

So I have followed the tutorial just as indicated up to the 12:24 mark... however, I've stopped midway through because it looks like I may have an issue with a "Halo Effect". Basically when scrubbing through what I've done so far, once the Shockwave starts to fade, it looks like there is still a reminisce of a glow. I'm thinking the only way to correct it is to create a second mask and place it so that the top of the new mask connects with the bottom of the original mask and then make the new mask subtract this glow or halo effect. I'll try to see if that works, but if anyone else has any ideas, then please let me know!

Thanks for your help, and have a great day!

This is pretty cool, however... I took this idea and tried it using the saber plugin on a horizontal line mask instead of the fractal noise plugin. This allowed for some really cool options just by changing the saber preset.
Just a thought.

Hi, nice tutorial!

I have a question.. I did exactly the same as you but I get these blurry visible edges of the mask, so basically before, during and after the shockwave explosion, I can see the blurry lines of my mask which doesn't happen on your end. Any ideas?

When rendering, select PNG in the format options and video output channels to RGB+Alpha. Or just use Red Giant's free plugin Unmult. You're welcome!

For some reason my masks feather seems to make a wierd glow at the edges rather than fade it out like it does in yours. Any ideas? I can't see any differnces in my settings, maybe something new in CC 2015? Once everything's faded out it leaves wierd fuzzy rings after the polar effects been added or the wierd glow without the polar effect.

Really love your tutorials. They've helped me so much. Having a really stupid , annoying problem though. I can't just drag and move the mask I've created. It just selects the whole layer or moves one side at a time. I can drag and move the whole layer no prbelm but that's not what I want to be doing.

You could get the free plugin from Red Giant called "Knoll UnMult."

you dont need transparency with a shockwave, because you can just put the blend mode to add or screen to blend whatever footage you lay it on.

When i use feathering on the first part of the effect. it leaves a light bar which gives my shockwave a rounded edge look, the more i turn it up the worse it gets.. its not fading the out the fractle noise like it should.. on your video you get a nice ghosting effect when you wave fades out.. mine just looks goofy and lame. any thoughts on how to fix this? I'm using AE CS6.

Be sure the color of your solid is BLACK.
Pat Villa
Hello there, i was having the same problem as well. The solution i found was that the color of the solid layer i used is set to gray(rather than black) so when i feather it instead of fading out fully it leaves a haloish effect/rounded effect. The solution was to simply change my solid settings to black. I hope this helps you

Yeah I have the same problem. I did the whole tutorial a couple times but I still have this mistake and can't find out why. Does anyone know how to fix that?
Harry
I did not have the problem but I went back and check and I think I found out why you would have the seam. Basically, if you noticed when Andrew put the "Mask Box" to eliminate the seam, the Box itself did not move, but the Fractal waves do (Before being Polar Coordinated). So depending on when you made that box (Timeline-wise), the seam may or may not be noticeable. So the answer to your burning question is 1) Animate the box along the vertical travel path of the Fractal. Or 2) Make the height of the Mask Box longer than the entire travel path of the Fractal. Either way, the key is to make sure the Adjustment Layer covers the Seam for the entire duration of its travel. Hope that helps!

Hello there!!
How to get rid of feather animation leftovers!
I've animated feather from some value to zero but now there is a line around the mask because of feather and this line is really ruining the effect. Is there is something I am doing wrong because I'm following the tutorial and this problem doesn't seems to be there in tutorial.
