Tutorial Update: Almost there! Some last minute refinements to make sure edges are crisp for this exciting new tutorial but no sleep until we launch this baby! It's still Tuesday in Hawaii right?
Andrew, I know a lot of people can be inpatient, but me and others understand that things come up. Also I understand the fact that you have to make a living and pay bills. So I'll just keep watching all your others tutorials that were given to us all for FREE, and keep practicing with all the plugins you have given us for FREE
In the meantime, take it easy, rest, make your money that's required to pay the bills, and spend time with your beautiful family. If you never make another tutorial again, so what. Because what you have given us once again ...for FREE, is enough for me and many others that appreciate every single second you have put already in teaching us what you have.
Thank you and enjoy YOUR time.

We really miss you Andrew....but please don't become yet another lame Youtube click bait chaser.
Apologies if I sound harsh about you giving away free stuff which is genuinely appreciated.....
......but how long do 'last minute refinements' take.
I liked this place FAR BETTER when tutorials just appeared rather than the cock tease.
Hopefully VC doesn't take the Hollywood route and start making teasers for trailers.....or have i spoken too soon?

I have a guess how you create this fx. maybe by creating manualy a normal map?

There's no sense in setting ridiciulous deadlines, is it?
Feel the pressure?
Thanks anyway für these great tutorials and keeping this thing running!

It's that deadline issue again Andrew. Why not release tutorials without one. It's a lot less stress for you and expectation from everyone waiting...
...after all, don't we all love a surprise?

I think this is a strategy to meet your objective. Setting up a deadline makes u work in a focus way to deliver the work. If no deadline is set you will work whennyou want and this might affect the overall process. And this is why Andrew put deadline so that he can finished the job but we all know that this is not the case because this man has a huge family a company products and tutorial to mske. And this cost a lot of time to find a balance in everything

Totally agree. No more deadlines, please. I feel anxious to know that maybe you're having a hard time trying to have the tutorial as fast as you can, Andrew. I specially love your work when I feel you've enjoyed doing it!

@Will, having deadlines and not meeting them is very very bad.
Setting a deadline when now one is forcing you to and not meeting it, is (with all due respect to Mr. Kramer.) indeed stupid and to a certain extent rather disrespectful to those waiting and expecting you to meet the deadline.
If A.K needs to set deadlines as a strategy to meet his objectives, there is no need to share this schedule with us, it is something he does for his own sake and there is no need to involve us because the moment he shares his deadline with us he creates expectations and we become the client and rightfully feel disappointed the moment he fails. Andrew would never do this to a customer, then why here?

Totally agree with you AJ. He's putting a lot effort into his tutorials. Waiting for it, is not an effort...
AJ

He is very very focused on his presentation style and quality. That means countless re-takes, then cutting. It takes a long time to cut on breaths and in-between words. He wouldn't have the sound or continuity ever come out lacking, if it was merely to meet a deadline. One does not sacrifice ones standards for clock-based things...lol

You've... uh... watched his videos right?
LOL
AJ

lol, yeah many times, but... well he just recently said he didn't think people would watch his videos just to hear him talk...Well when I lived in Hollywood for a couple years, yes he was the only interesting person available on many nights...but for making videos...there is a distinct separation between the amazing content you might have when it is aside from you and your voice making it, I highly doubt the man did not have the content ready....he already posted screenshots....right?

It was a snarky joke AJ...
I'm a huge AK follower and wouldn't slam him for the world.
I wouldn't pass up picking on him a little though. Nope.

Man...if you decided not to post anything and that we'd not hear from you again until 2019, ma... it would be so evil that you'd become even cooler than what you already are. Your reputation of unpredictable creative genius would sky rocket. So Andrew, if I were you, I'd consider this before posting a new tut. You already are famous but think about what you could be.
Great blog. Very informative and useful tutorial especially the interactive bevel shading. Thanks for posting such a helpful blog. It really helped me a lot in my work. Keep blogging.
Inner Glow + CC Glass + texture + some Kramer magic
Mike
I figured this out a little bit if anyone is bored and wants to play around in AE.
Type a text layer, make it black. go to Layer > layer style > Inner glow. Make it white, and set it to "precise" (rather than soft). Now you ave a displacement map. Increase the size of the glow until there is not pure white bits, it should still have obvious gradient black on edges and lighter on the inside. Then precomp this text layer. now adda solid, use set matte effect and set to the text layer. Now apply cc glass, and use text pre comp as the source. Play with the height settings and change lights to "AE lights". Add a few lights around. Play with the shading settings like specular and turn down metal. You should start to get the 3d text effect. You can go back into the text precomp and layer some noise or textures onto the bump map, make sure the white center and the dark edges are still obvious otherwise it will lose the 3d effect. have a crack.

Close to what I came up with, but mine has two layers, one is using roughen edges which is what I've been trying to run with to get the rocky look.
Going to try your way now. Gotta love the work you put into it.

Very nice! Also: you can get the 3D backwards 'extrusion' by duping the layer, apply radial blur set to zoom (something around 10 should work). Add a levels and increase alpha, then scale down a little bit. Increase the 'Metal' amount on that layer.
I figure AK would probably then write an expression to control the angle of the extrusion or something smart like that.
Also, a combo of matte choker and fractal noise must be how he's making those rough edges?
Unterhalten sich zwei"VFX MAAAAAAASTER",sagt der eine:
"INTERCEPT kommt nicht raus, liegt in Koma."
"WARUUUUUUUUUUUM??????????????????"
"Hat Besuch von Herrn "Novitchok"bekommen." Lol.
The titles won't need an effect for aged chiseling by the time its ready. jk love ya buddy!!!

SOON:
adverb; in or after a short time.
synonyms: shortly, presently, in the near future, before long, in a little while, in a minute, in a moment, in an instant, in a bit, in the twinkling of an eye, in no time, before you know it, any minute (now), any day (now), by and by;
How about from now on you just tell us what week you plan on releasing something.

How about you don't act like a demanding prick and let Andrew Kramer do whatever he wants to whenever he wants to, I could understand this attitude if you were to pay for a service VideoCoPilot provides, but since it's a free service he/they wants to provide... stop your #%&!in' and appreciate what he/they've done for the GCI/VFX community, they could easily ask a shit ton of money for these quality tutorials...
Creating particles in After Effects is awesome! We have all used Particular and Particle world but why not combine those particles with some real ones! Sometimes you need to create elements that are so complex and organic that you are better off taking out the camera and making a mess.
In this example we use a little bit of flour to mix things up!
