This is a great interview and thanks for sharing. My mind is blown that this wasn?t shard by VC. The radio silence here is ridiculous. He mentions he has a team taking care of the site, and he could live off it, but zero is happening here.

@Mork - yeah, I feel ya. I am more than willing to give AK the benefit of the doubt, but it's a poor decision to not have ANY kind of sign of life from him here at VC, which is his baby. I just hope that when/if he does return that he makes a concerted effort (this time) to stay in touch. I respect him in many ways and consider him a very intelligent man, but this wasn't a good decision and has left many a fan dispirited and dejected which will leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who continue to follow him on VC. Perhaps he let it slip away from him so much that he felt like he COULDN'T say anything here and resigned himself to making a HUGE splash upon his return. If that's the case, hopefully it won't backfire.

AK - Miss ya man! Please, get back in the game here! Take your lumps and step back up to the plate!

hahaha, fair enough. The problem is that you exposed your work and with great instistence too thus being judge is what you are asking for and this opens a big question mark as to why you would do that. I've watched some of your work and I do undrestand that you have great passion in what you do, but honestly (and honesty is the best thing you can hope to achieve from promoting your work the way you do) I think you should re-think your strategy and perhaps focus on really improving rather than pushing your stuff so hard onto people at this stage of your learnig curve. Seriously...this is just a piece of advice. People will remember you for what you do now and if you are serious about working in this industry (on some decent level that is), then you don't want people to remember you for what you are doing now. Your passion is important so I think you should take it more seriosuly and have more respect for it and you'll see that other people will respect it too. Not now, but if you work hard, they will soon. Who am I to say this? Who knows...maybe I'm just someone whose work sucks or maybe you saw something I did on the big screen and thought: wow... .It doesn't matter, I'm just being honest here and - as you can see from people's reaction to your work and "promotion strategy" you have not really achieved great respect - perhaps you should consider my advice. No offence meant.

Twice bake...not fry. Brush butter on wings, preheat over to 450, cook for about 20 minutes, then reapply butter, and any additional spices like cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and sea salt. Bake for another twenty minutes or until chicken is white throughout.

mmm...your message is not very clear. Like you said it is possible with c4d (and i guess any other 3d platform) and it is actually very simple so you should be able to import all the cameras you want both from c4d to ae and the other way round. No problem, so what is your issue? Go into c4d's render settings in the save section and in the compositing project file tab, tick all the options and save. In order to do this you must have the save option in your regular image tab also ticked, but you do not need to actually render. Basically you just need to save the data. Depending on your ae/c4d versions you might need to go to the maxon site and download the plugin to import/export from one software to the other. It takes few clicks. good luck

Well if nothing else, the silliness on this blog has kept the site in hits so it at least looks busy from his online stats. Its almost as if he is embarrassed to come back after being away so long and not even bothering to post his annual Xmas stuff, or reply the the genuine good questions some have posted over the months.

Posting elsewhere seems to be keeping his fans occupied, although I said it years ago when he pulled the same stunt, you dont by a Ford and look for service at a Toyota dealership, so if he has a fan base on the site he built, why only update on third party social media when you know you have a fan base at your own site?

Hi Andrew,
I have some question about 3D camera tracker, hoping you answer me:
first: I have a green screen shot with a girl in front a camera moving to the camera.
2: applied 3D camera tracker and selected some point in the wall behind the subject making null and camera
3: applied keylight to extract the subject from the green 4: I choose a Photo as BG, selected 3D switch in After Effect than, copied the position of the null and past the BG
Now, In any Z position I choose, I don't see any parallax effect, what is wrong? Many Thanks

Hahaha. Poor Ahmed guy... Don't be mean, Django! At least Ahmed takes some time to say something here...

I think it's really weird Andrew didn't say anything like "Happy Christmas" this time. He must be really, really busy. I feel bad for the guy, but I guess he really needs to delegate some work at some point. This website is losing its sense of existing day by day, and I can't imagine a world without VideoCopilot...

Please, Andrew, take someone under your overlord control and put him/her managing the website, at least! Some posts, tuts, video feed... something! He/she doesn't need to be brillant, just present. Your younger children would be good choices too. They look funny people.

I think this is the first time AK doesn't show up for holiday wishes. Rather a bad sign I'd say... As I believe no Star Wars contract could forbid him from uploading the usual family pict and from wishing all his fans, I'm unpleasantly led to think that there is something deeper going on that involves much more than just not having time due to work or other things. I hope I am wrong and hope that VC still reflects AK's soul no matter what reason he has for staying distant. Don't mean to be dramatic, I just wish the man all the best. To him, his carrer and most of all his health and family.

guessing was fun at first, but now it's simply ridiculous...
Andrew has been slowly resurfacing on the internet, but mostly on Twitter and nowhere near here.
One of your team said to a user that Andrew has been working on VC content all year... yet he has been radio silent for nearly 9 months.... is he stockpiling in sight of next year (likely) involvement in star wars XI?

i really don't understand anyway all this silence... has video copilot been bought by somebody else like Adobe and you are waiting next year to make the big announcement?

not publishing tutorials is fine, they are on the other hand something you do for free, but not giving a reply to many customers/followers that ARE ASKING.... is just plain rude.

This is good stuff. Shows you're moving forward under your own steam and I seriously like that!

IF I could give some CC, and its not about the project, its about the tutorial. Its time for voice over my friend. I'm as guilty in the past (many years ago) of creating stuff without one, just using music but its been a few years for me lol. People these days need/WANT to hear what you're trying to explain. If someone is multi tasking but wants to still watch your tut, they may miss valued information without the voice over.

The edits are clean. The project was awesome, put your stamp on it, tell us where your mind was and explain to the really really up and coming newbies what your doing.That's why the big boys are followed, they show clean informative tuts.

I hope this is true, I know he did say he'd rather get on with things rather than just keep promising and not delivering, EVERYONE on here has one thing in common, massive respect for what has brought to AE and effects in general, we all miss his infectious banter and great products, I for one will be more than happy to PAY for any E3D updates, maybe he's been working on an update for E3D for 9 months? I hope so.

It's honestly not about getting new tutorials. Though they are surely appreciated, what concerns me are the plugins that myself and other professionals paid for and whether or not they will continue to be updated and compatible in the future.

7 months is an awfully long time to be silent. If he is working on new content, then great.. but communication with customers is they key to running any responsible business.

Why is everyone assuming Andrew was working on star wars.. I don't see anywhere in the credits saying he's apart of it. Everyone face it Video copilot won't ever be the same.even if he did come back I'm sure he will bail on us again. The guy to me is a great teacher and he's taught me a lot in After Effects.but also(im not going to Sugar coat this) A F#*kin liar! He can't even finished what he started..wheres Intercept? How can two week go on to be three years? Doesn't make sense. I see a lot of negative commentary on here recently. I'm not sure if some of you guys are aware, but it's quite likely that his Star Wars contract forbids him from communicating with pretty much anyone related to his profession, especially here on his own business site (as well as getting others to communicate on his behalf). I'm pretty sure he hasn't forgotten about us, and will be back soon with a sh*t load of amazing new content. Besides, we should at least be happy for him. He's making great strides in his profession (something that a lot of us also obtained because of the time he's given us with all his content).

I had the same problem. I ended up having to delete everything from VC and do a clean install. I also updated my Nvidia driver and then it worked. Took a long time to sort though.

This is strange! 7 months ago, Mr Kramer made a video about him being dedicated to the site and comunity and that everything would change from last time VC died for 7 months. And now, its dead again. I wish him the best with what ever he is doing , but I dont think this is the way to do it- just leave everything dead! Some people talk about everything he has given to the comunity, but you also have to remember that a lot of us are paying costumers.

Hi Christian and thank you very much for your kindly comment. I really appreciate it. And, yes we (our company) are moving forward. Since we are located in a samll Town in Switzerland, there are not much requests for motion graphics stuff for now, which will change sooner or later. For now, we are focusing on creating webpages and web-applications for our clients. 2D and regular graphics are now more interesting and more affordable to people here.

But, yeah .. we'll keep on moving forward and we are now planing to do more Tutorials for After Effects. Element 3D will be involved in a couple of them which we'll gladly relase soon and share it on social media channels as well as here on VC Blog.

it sort of work. I exported OBJ from element and import to HitFilm.
Hit film can import 3D files also if you attach sound to layer with 3d object you can hear doppler shift effect as it pass next to camera Wroooom.

F*&# me, reading these comments is sad. The devout Kramer apologists are a pathetic bunch. Even the angry-that-he-hasn't-posted-in-a-while crowd reak. The best though is Abdirahman Ahmed spamming his tutorials and people getting upset that he's ruining the thread... a thread almost entirely made up of people crying for or yelling about Andrew.

Does Kramer owe you anything? Yes and no. He absolutely does if you're a paying customer who makes a living (though I doubt it) using his limited pre-fab plugins. You deserve an update. Does the fact that he's entirely abandoned you guys with no content for half a year deserve criticism? Yes. But only because he stupidly promised that he'd make more frequent posts before and during his last one.

The real question is, does he give a shit? And that's been answered in the last 6 months of complete radio silence.

But don't worry. He'll come back... to promote an update to Element. Because he knows retards will pay for it.

He might even throw in another "grounding breaking" lightning effect tutorial that takes an hour to make and has to use an endless amount of pre-comps to be achieved... (whispering) because After Effects is a limited turd.

And everyone will be happy again. For a while. Then the whole cycle starts again. You'll cry, Ahmed will spam, and then people will start making pretentiously lame comments like "you shouldn't be waiting on Andrew for inspiration, make your own stuff". How profound... but it only misses the bigger picture.

You shouldn't be using After Effects and more specifically Element 3D to make your projects at all.

After Effects at best is a lite compositing and color grading tool compared to something like Houdini or Nuke. And the Element plugin was, if you paid attention, always meant to be a gateway to learning a real 3D application like Cinema 4D or Maya.

Do you really think spending months making renders in Element or AE is going to get your effects or career where you want them to be in today's professional landscape? Take a look at the latest renders on YouTube or Vimeo from people just like you in every respect but one; they started using other programs. Now take a look at Kramer's latest (6 month old) Lightning tutorial. Then realize you've been severely wasting your time here.

There's excellent free tutorials from people like GreyScaleGorilla, Eyedesyn, The Pixel Lab and Elementza just waiting for you outside this sunken ship.

I love After Effects (because it's what i started on) but it's long in the tooth and needs to be completely reinvented and re-imagined. Adobe needs to ask themselves this question... The funny thing that I hear people say is " I use the video copilot products to make a living...". Guys for almost every tool they sell here, VCP and Andrew have taught us how to duplicate that effect with built in AE tools. He gave us the best tools ever! Knowledge! How to solve a problem or complete a task with the tools you have AND STILL create something in a way that hasn't been seen before. Onward an upward VCP community! In the meantime, if someone comes up with a new process, share it! This is and always has been a COMMUNITY! Let's keep the VCP spirit alive until Andrew comes back instead of falling apart in his absence!

Alain de Lamirande: I don't know about you but I've been with VCP since inception and followed Andrew and Aaron Rabhinowiz on creative cow. This started as, and still is a community. I am glad he's busy. If he came back and charged for all tutorials, I'm willing to bet a good half of people complaining would cry foul right? But it's "a business" right? Cut these guys some slack and use the priceless knowledge he's given you. The tools they sell, still work amazing as multipurpose plugins. So what they haven't released a new product? As far as missing AK and his personal brand of fun, I get that. Feel like you lost a friend? I get that too. But let's just be happy for the mans successes and move forward. He's given us too much for any other response.

This time last year, Andrew had just wrapped up work on Star Wars - The Force Awakens. Who is to say he hasn't been working hard on The Last Jedi?
For those of you complaining about lack of VCP website activity; are you concerned about lack of free tutorials or product development? Because the products currently on offer, which many of you claim are essential to your livelihoods, are still fully supported by VCP staff. I challenge you - contact their support and you will get a rapid response.
Are you just waiting for a new version or free update to VCP products with free guidance or do you have genuine concerns about limitations to the existing products on offer? What have you identified as shortcomings to the software you claim is invaluable to your income? I don't see anyone requesting fixes or new features here. Maybe it's just me, but I sense a lot of entitlement on here. It seems Andrew has become a victim of his own success, which I think is a real shame.

It works well enough within limits as it is, but full support would be very appreciated.

I am glad to see so much support for Andrew here in this forum, I think he is a talented and great guy. However, many people seem to think it's still the good old days when Andrew was just making free tutorials and giving away stuff to build his audience. This is no longer the case, this is now a business with real paying customers and this complete lack of product development and more importantly lack of information communicates a disregard and in my opinion a disrespect for us as customers. If the products here are dead then please communicate this to us so we can move on. If not, then at least give a brief update on the direction of the company and it's products.

Hey Andrew,

When I try to do the reflections on the floor, right after applying the exposure, when I blur it vertically it doesn't become smooth like yours, rather it's almost like layers, kind of like when you use the gradient tool in photoshop and instead of a smooth transition you have a clear separation between sections, how could I fix that?

While I have grave concerns for the continued development of E3D (which I love), I have to wonder what my reaction would be if VCP did release an update. Would I throw good money after bad if the offer of an update was made available?

I don't think I would, I'd have to have reason to believe that VCP is committed to continue making these products, and I have ample evidence to suggest they are not.

Like Andrew's departure for greener pastures, it's nothing personal, it's just business.

I am not sure if you are a professional using VideoCopilot products on a daily basis to make a living, but for those of us who fit that definition, I am concerned, not about more tutorials or nifty new apps, but rather about the future of products I find essential to my career. I can't help but feel other professionals who are in this same predicament are as concerned as I am about the future of this company when little or nothing has been heard from them in almost half a year.
If you are not a professional, please try to understand our position and not call us names.

I have been a loyal end-user and, honestly, a fan and "student" of Mr. Kramer and the VideoCopilot world for years now and I understand when I read many of your posts of unflinching devotion to, and patience with, Andrew and Company.
But this unusually protracted radio silence - 5 months as of this posting - is indefensibly bad business; nothing less than an insult to the many loyal customers.
While, as many of you stated and I agree, Mr. Kramer is certainly not compelled to offer us any more tutorials or products, I feel he owes his followers a mission statement going forward for VideoCopilot. And he owes it to them now.
There are many of us who depend on VideoCopilot products to create our works. If there is to be an end to this company and, with it, the inevitability its software will be incompatible with future systems, we need to know. It's the future for many of us.

You guys are nuts. Andrew Gives a lot of his time to bring us free plugins and Tutorials never mind Great products at a good price. You think he puts those tutorials together over night! I would like to see a video of that process. We have no idea what is going on in his life right now. It could be bad, or it could be great. He could have took some time to be with his family. As far as updates, Video copilot is not like those corporations who throws updates out that have few changes and full of bugs. Video copilot software works great never had issue with it or custom service. I'm sure The team at video copilot are working hard to get a great update, but it all takes time. It seems to me Andrew loves what he does and takes pride to all he does. So stop being so selfish , with refunds, or not herring from them. I emailed them last month with some question and they got back to me with in the hour. I asked them about andrew and was told he is working hard.

@Abdirahman Achmed: I'm a working man too and Element is one of my tools that makes my paycheck. By this I mean I'm not a youtube kid waiting for the next tutorial because guess what it's raining this weekend.
Mr Kramer (and his team) is busy with his life, ok fine. But so am I, and I'm far from being the only one here. He might not have the time for some daily blah blah on his blog? fine. But dropping a line to people who spent money on his products takes a maximum of 3 minutes. And 3 minutes in five months isn't hard to find. It's just a matter of will and customer respect.
Mr Kramer isn't running VC alone. He's got a team. If he hasn't time to post himself, then he can delegate the task of writing a line to someone of his team. That's how companies work when they respect their customers.

I wonder if Video Copilot is assessing whether to even continue with development of Element 3d, considering that Adobe CC has C4d rendering built in (and there getting into Open GL rendering now).

Plus, even if they did update Element, I have a feeling they would only support CC (and not CS6 or below). Those are getting too old.

Ya know, if Andrew wants to change his career path, more power to him. Life is boring without change...
However, when you have a product people that have invested money and time into, and rely on to make a living, you have a responsibility to them. We're not talking free tutorials here, he can never do another tutorial again for all I care, I'm talking about product development and evolution. No one wants to invest into a product that is no longer being developed. If you look at whats going on in real-time 3D, lots of advancements are being developed and Element 3D has to keep up if it is going to stay a viable product. Andrew, if you no longer wish to run VideoCoPilot, that's cool, do what you need to do. But put someone else in charge of the business and empower them to grow all the products and further their development.

Yep, even on the forum it seems that the activity it's extremely reduced. But I don't understand why someone can't do it like Philip Bloom did it on his blog few years ago with a post that was announcing he is going to post much less (or none) and focus on his private life much more. Simple and fair message, no one objected, there were just a lot of thanks in the comments. And actually he is still posting camera reviews or some test videos for drones or other equipment, but maybe once in a month, usually every two months. And that's okay.
But silence is not okay. It's like hit&run;.

@Abe - I don't want to go in a dispute about what should be people do when they are not spending 2 seconds on a dead site. I am pretty sure that most of past-clients of Video Copilot (including me) are doing just fine, making motion-graphics and earning money from that.
Your comment seems to be a copy-cat of other hundreds of similar comments that looks like a blind-defense of a person or a company which .. is not attacked by anybody. Most of the customers are coming to this site as normal customers: to see some news about the products they own, if there are any updates, if there is anything under development.. the usual stuff. And because they don't find any of this usual stuff, they are just asking here if there is anybody home.
Take a look on Red Giant site or Greyscale and you will understand what I mean.

The thing is VCP's - E3D - is a massive massive part of AE, and is a irreplaceable void of a loss to not be not upgraded, people would queue up to buy any update that will never be, Andrew has quite obviously changed career track (and, like I've said before he totalny DESERVES the success) we , however, really do deserve just one thing - honesty and a goodbye for all the cash and emotional and social investment into VCP over the years, just 'man-up' Andrew and we'll all wish you the best.

We've already been through this before...till he one day came back saying he was finally back; everybody was rilieved and there he was gone again. Problem is that he cannot keep doing that. I can't imagine though how hard it must be to let VCP go...I cannot believe he is keeping it up just to have a place where people can buy E3D and the other products. VCP was never just about that. Yet I cannot understand why he just doesn't explain things... he's behaviour (not showing up for a year and then one day saying he's back with lots of new stuff..) is very bad and this has nothing to do with the fact that he owes us nothing and it has nothing to do with the tutorials that some people nag about all the time. In my opinion, no matter how tough facing VCP's end may be, he ought to do it and say goodbye.

@Sparatacus. When you are a leader, people follow you. When you have a leader, you follow him. Leaders eventually disappear and people logically feel lost, they need time to accept that and move on. They don't need to be criticized for their reaction by someone who is neither a leader nor a follower and that watches from a distance and writes stupid comments.
Besides all that, Joseph and many others are right: VCP is a business and it's being shamefully neglected which makes customers rightfully feel upset.

Ok not news for 4 mounth and what? Andrew and the rest of VC team (don't forget the team behind him) are busy yes like danny said. They gave to us a lot of free stuff (plug in script model pack...) so you should be grateful. All tut are free and very well done (nice trips explained well with humor...). I'm pretty sure they 're working hard on many cool project. They're testing a lot of cool new features (like in SW VII) and they will be back (tin tin!! tin! tin tin!!...imagine Terminator score here) to us with tone of new thing, We have to be patient!

Don't get me wrong guys, I love this site and I love all the videos they have given away for free over the years!
I'm simply saying that they didn't come out with a major plugin for over 2 years (last MAJOR plugin was Element 3D V2), and that is a fact. Unless you consider Ugly sweater or the one for popping eyes a major plugin

Guy's give Andrew a break, you don't know what is going on in his life, its all well and good moaning about no new tutorials or software updates but if it were not for Andrew and Video Copilot many of you would not be where you are now with your video effects. Andrew has taken time to produce all these tutorials for free and we all know how time consuming video effects can be, if like me Andrew has taught us all so much and i for one am very grateful for all the hard work and effort he puts into his tutorials and for all he has taught me. I got into video effects as a hobby because of Video Copilot and Andrew so he has made a big impact on me and taught me so much. Instead of moaning and and feeling sorry for yourselves, show some support for Andrew and Video Copilot and be thankful for all he has taught you. Andrew has produced some of the best tutorials on the internet and they are all free. If Andrew is gone for good then i wish him and his family all the best for the future and i would also like to thank him for all he has done for the video effects community.

I think it's obvious that Andrew is working on Star Wars the last Jedi. He is met with the same challenge a lot of entrepreneurs are met with when there is demand. He needs to find another "Andrew Kramer" that he can make part of his team to drive developments especially in Video copilot plugins and software. He put a lot of effort into his tutorials and software which exposed him to a bigger market. Now his time is in great demand, and he needs to find a way to balance the demand. The tutorials are great, and this is why they are also in demand! Maybe Andrew could ask his users to submit their exciting tutorial in Video copilot style, and have a contest? And hopefully an update will be launched for element 3D soon.

Forget about the tutorials; Andrew was never under any obligation to do anything for free, but for those of us who invested in his software (i.e., Elementary 3D), there's no excuse for the absence of any significant upgrade in almost 4 years ??? nor for the web site practically shutting down for months at a time, now. Someone needs to remind Kramer of the community that played a major role in getting him where he is now. He needs to take a few tutorials on how to properly run a business.

At 37:41, when you add CC Composite... When I do it, it opens something like a white layer and it covers all the rest. It doesn't show another lightning like it's shown on the video... How do I solve it? By the way, when I Pre-compose, the effects before still on the screen.

@felix: Contenance bitte. Er ist nun mal eine Koryphäe auf seinem/diesem Gebiet und sie vermissen ihn halt. Und es sind auch viele darunter, die seine Produkte gekauft haben. Dieses Klientel hat Anspruch auf Service. Meine bescheidene Meinung.
Aber ich nehme auch ganz stark an, dass er in irgendwelchen Filmprojekten "drin hängt" und Stress pur hat. Oder vielleicht hat er auch private Probleme. Man weiss es nicht. Aber trotzdem könnte man als Inhaber dieser Seite nach 4 Monaten wenigsten mal "Piep" sagen. Finde ich nicht nett, aber vielleicht ticken die Amerikaner da anders. I read through some of these moaning comments and wonder who the hell has to spoon feed these poor kids. Yeah, you are right, a business is a business, and a business like VC has responsibilities to its customers but do you realize.... If you went through each and every tutorial, and mastered them, you would be teaching others by now instead of moaning about nobody feeding your wannabe empty creativeness! Grow the #%&! up. there are a ton of reasons as to why someone might (have to) neglect a part of their life. The products offered here are MORE than enough, and up to date enough, to produce some professional work, but you have to #%&!ing well work at it instead of waiting for momma to teach you another trick or two!

I know of some big companies on the east coast that use Element for a lot of there work. (ESPN & Hasbro) I think that Element is a amazing program and ahead of its time but some day soon it will be common place and then it will fade away if it doesn't continue to develope.

Was it done fully in E3D? How did you obtain such a realistic render of BB8? I mean...all my renders in E3D look a little bit "videogamish", but yours is very nice.

Hi Biere
Thanks ! and Yes! it was all done using After Effects and E3D no plugins or effects. To be honest even I was visually stunned at the quality of the Finished Render. I wasn't expecting that it took my i7 7hrs to render 4 scenes. Nevertheless I will explain what I did.
1) Switch your Color Float settings to 32bit (Don't use sRGB that messes with your Dynamic Range!!)
2) choose the HDTV (Rec 709) as your color space
3) Add 2 light that's close to real light values like 1 warm and 1 Cold summer day type value. I used 3DS Max to get some realistic Light Values. RGB'd the values and got a color match. Use those colors in choosing your lights colors. Try the Summer Warm color first then if your not happy try the Bright Sunny cold color.
4) Make sure you decrease BB8 reflective values to get that mirror shine. increasing the reflectance seems to dull the effect for some reason. Play around with the reflectance. you want that marble shine look.

And That's it.
I think I played around with a few of E3D material settings as well but mainly you need a eye for recognising the tones and the looks of realism and just try your best to recreate it. It took me hours to get that look so good luck on your next E3D project.

It is a bummer that AK is never around anymore. It's an even bigger bummer that it doesn't seem the tools that he created will ever have consistent updates/releases.

But once I accepted that reality several months ago, I moved on and learned how to use new tools. Before, I was afraid of rendering inside the 3D application like C4D. But without Element to rely on, I jumped in and learned how to work with Octane, and now Redshift. It was hard work but the results are much better. I also learned how to use Nuke for compositing. And I think the realization that I would be okay without Videocopilot is when I followed the lightning tutorial for AE and was able to use the same exact method in Nuke. It felt good.

I hope AK comes back and releases new tutorials and updates to his products, but if he doesn't I know that I will be just fine.

I really wish people would cut VCP a break. Andrew and staff has gone above and beyond for the visual effects community. I applaud their success. I've been using VCP since tutorial #1 and followed him here from creative cow. Please stop hating on the lack of updates. This team has paid enough dues for ALL of us. ...and to Darren's comment: Hollywood didn't kill VCP. VCP helped make Hollywood even better. I hope anyone with a complaint has mastered all 164 tutorials.

Touche Christian! I love the G. Ramsey analogy. Nevertheless, dont be so serious, despite my "nasty" comment, I appreciate Philip's effort in trying to make something cool and I was Just messing with him since a dirty lens is really a very amatorial and avoidable mistaKe; so although the tone of my messagge may suck, its content is probably way more useful than lots of other crappy useless compliments posted here. Yeah, all of the tuts are from film projects, AK's onto pastures new, there's no better evidence than months and months of inactivity on here, and the co-pilot has ejected, the planes in the mountain... what I can't get my head around is, why would he not have someone just doing a bit of house-keeping on VCP while he's 99.9% on Hollywood projects? massive gap in the market being let rot here.

Okay - one more: Pre-Comp the Lightning and do an Auto-Trace to convert its core luminance into animated masks. Then use the masks to drive the Saber plugin for all the energy and glow effects. Pretty much energy beam Nirvana.

@AK A useful technique for adding time-based expressions, like you did with the conductivity setting is to use "time*value", then dial the value to whatever you want. That way you can tweak it without having to edit the expression, just by changing the value. Also lets you keyframe it for added control.

Hey everyone needs to stop relying on AK so much, I see one big development for VCP before XMas ( just a hunch) then he'll roll out some new tuts with that, and people should pay for the upgrade VCP 2.5 btw... then, he'll be spreading his wings into film - and why shouldn't he...good luck I say, if anyone's good enough to fill his boots, the better for the mograph community, but, I'm not holding my breath, there was only 1 Steve Jobs after all, yep, I think he's that good.

Sean, the purpose of VC is to teach you some techniques, not to rely on Andrew... If you need AK so much, you really should rethink your way of working ! I started AE about 7 or 8 years ago, and thanks to VC I learned a lot, but I never waited for a new tut to try new things... If I did, I wouldn't be making a living out of AE.

Being upset because Andrew makes lets tuts is bullshit... In each tutorial, there's a lot of cool tips you can use on many other things, if you don't just copy what Andrew does.

Go work on your own, use VC as inspiration, and you'll learn much quicker than waiting for new VC content.

(Sorry if my english is bad, I'm french, but I'm also sick of all these people complaining instead of REALLY WORKING !)

No prob Thomas, your English is very good. I totally agree with you but you guys get really serious here as soon as one says something about VC not posting anything. Honestly I've hardly watched any of AK's tuts in the past 2 years, don't get me wrong, I'm sure tere is plenty of stuff I could still learn from watching them, but unfotunately (or maybe luckly) I do not have time as I am too busy making stuff; plus honestly the saber stuff is cool but really not very useful. What I really really miss are the "shows" he used to post, as fot the rest, I just got love for the man.
That said, what I meant with my previous comment is that many of you guys complain about people complaining whcih makes you no different fromn them in the first place. Second, lots of the work of those who tell others to stop complaining and do some real work SUCKS, and they in the first place should rely on AK's tuts instead of posting links to their unwatchable crap. That said, peace.

Since you can only save to a previous version you need to go from cc17;16 or 15 to cc12 and then from cc12 to cs6 but will need all the necessary versions implied. Have no idea why adobe would not just let you save to any version...I guess it is just to follow the world trend of being unreasonable and making life harder than it already is.

Could you place a few lights in the E3D scene behind the logo, and set the colour and intensity based on certain points from the background layer? So that way the light will react to the lighting in the background, and thus light the logo accordingly?

Ok I worked this out - for anyone interested, because i think it's pretty cool..

Add this expression to your light color value:
targetLayer = thisComp.layer("Plain_Smoke");
point = thisComp.layer("Null 4").transform.position;
radius = [50,50];
sampledColor = targetLayer.sampleImage(point, radius, postEffect=true, t=time);
sampledColor*2

So parent a null to the light position if you like, change the 'point' to your null position, and the targetLayer to the layer you want to sample colour from. You can increase the sample size to sample more pixels. the light will change to the color/brightness of the background sampled point. works well with element so the light reacts with the 3d objects.

Too bad, no CS6 support more from Videocopilot. I think rather because Adobe would like the users all change to the rental model. Thanks without me. It gives me more than enough users who still use CS6 (11.04.2). I work with it very long (pure hobby) and am always excited about the videos and tutorials. As long as Adobe does not offer a purchase version, I stay with CS6 (Production Premium). This had cost a lot of money a few years ago. That I do not earn money and run it from pure hobby, exactly for this reason I am not willing every month also to spend money. @Adobe: You forget the semi-professionals! Put a buy version again and I will buy this. greetings Mario.

On another note:
I was frankly really disappointed with FX CONSOLE. I was actually expecting that physical box with a real button for each effect, and was willing to pay up to $999 for it. Had already imagined a scenario where my director asks for color correction - and me going: "please step aside, sir - I need to hit the curves button over here"...

I did verify the project was set at 32bpc. I was able to kinda work around it by adjusting the Offset to -0.15 and the Gamma Correction to 0.63 under the Exposure effect and pulling down the Exposure to 9.73
I triple checked all the settings under each effect but still can?t figure out why the whole screen washes out when I increase the Exposure effect. Maybe it?s a personal setting you have set under some preference ? somewhere in the program? Or maybe a Windows setting on my machine that's different from yours?

I?m using the latest version ? 14.2.0.198
I followed each step through the video and everything was fine up til that point. The only warning sign I see is next to Advanced Lightning ? which is 8bit.
But, I noticed that message came up on your video and it works for you. Just to test, I created a new project and tried it again - Same issue.

I was able to resolve this issue by pulling the Exposure FX above the Solid Composite FX in the Effect Controls. Not sure why it allowed you to keep Exposure below, but it enabled me to match your settings without blowing out the screen.

@felipe camara That's exactly what it was. The middle number was not Zero. Once I adjusted it to all zeros I was able to move the Exposure under the Solid Comp FX without it blowing out. Thanks my friend

Andrew, great tutorial. There are a lot of little details to consider in the workflow. I have a question though. When you apply the glow to your lightning, what does adding a solid composite beforehand do for the process?

It get's rid of the transparency in the BG. Many effects like Glow and color correction work better on images that do not have an alpha channel.

Awesome tut, learned loads of fresh techniques. The AGE OF PROCEDURAL has begun!!!

I need help with a few doubts:
1- In the cloud shot, will "Luma Matte Inverted" work instead of "Set Matte"
2- In the bridge, truck and building shot, do we need to camera track and place planes along geometry surface to receive reflections

And lastly, I would like to request the community(including myself) to be a bit more patient and give him time, cuz i missed those AK special witty jokes in this one. Everything AK provides is AWESOME and is worth waiting for.
