Where are the Tutorials! + NAB 2017!

Yo Andrew! Where are all the Tutorials!?! A reasonable question actually.

I don’t have a simple answer but maybe I can share a bit of my process with you.

This year I’ve been working on a bunch of amazing content for Video Copilot! My goal was to dig deep into default plug-ins and try to find things that were NEW and interesting!

The cycle begins!

ACTUAL PROCESS From the last couple of weeks:

As you can see, every deviation would evolve into something new.  This basically goes on until I feel like I’ve come across something that is new that is innovative and also LOOKS COOL!  And while each step of this process would make a formidable tutorial, there is always something that will make it better.

The problem is that everything can be a little bit better. And perhaps this mindset is a bit of a curse for a guy that makes tutorials!!!

The truth is that I care a lot about making Tutorials. Genuinely. I don’t want to create another lightning tutorial, I want to create one that adds something new and challenges my skills as well.

There is a certain satisfaction from trying to use 100% built-in After Effects Plug-ins. And that is what I have been trying to do recently.

But I also get that it’s frustrating to hear “Coming soon” so I’ve been trying not to talk about things until they are done. The madness is not lost on me! But because of my tutorials “process” several weeks go by and THEN I really want to deliver a great tutorial.  And now that it’s taking so long I want to make it even better! It’s a Vicious  cycle!  Which makes bouncing back and fourth between projects very hard because if you have ever opened an old project after a while… there’s going to be some notes!

Needless to say, Tutorials are not dead, in fact this process has lead to some incredible techniques and content that I can’t wait to share! I just need to knock them out!

If you are interested, I recently talked a bit about this and other things with my friend Ash on the Collective Podcast!

BTW, If you are at NAB this week, please drop by the Adobe booth!

I haven't made that many tutorials, but I find them way more challenging than just working on my normal stuff. Trying to make sure they flow and don't waste people's time is extremely difficult. Mistakes happen in the real world, and back-stepping (Command or Control Z'ing) is always required. Even in a rehearsed tutorial. But, when people might be following along, step-by-step, you don't want to make them back-step along with you. Also, trying to add that "special" touch that pushes things further is what has always made your tutorials so valuable. I have been following along from the original sky replacement tutorial and every one since. Those little extras can be the technique someone uses for the next 5 years. Maybe forever. I hope people know that raising the bar makes everything more complicated. We have all benefited from your drive to always raise that bar. I really think the recent experience you've had has ramped that drive up even further. You know things that we don't. Which is why we're here. Please take your time. It's always worth the wait.

That said, while we wait, I really recommend everyone go back and watch some of the old tutorials again. I always learn a few new things and I've been using After Effects since Andrew was on Creative Cow.

Nice presentation at NAB. I believe I saw you at the pinball arcade the next day but I was too busy trying to beat my high score at Tron to say hi. It's great to see you making lightning better. I co-wrote the original lightning plug-in that's still ships with Aftereffects. It was made better by cycore with advanced lightning. Believe it or not it was based on the work of a traditional animator named Chris Cassidy who hand drew all the lightning in films like Star Wars and Short Circuit. Chris was kind enough to help us capture some of his techniques in that original plugin. Keep up the good work and yes I understand that great things take time to develop.

Hi Andrew!

You are simply a gem, no less than a blessing for students like us. I love all your tutorials and have started following you since few months. I learnt a lot from your tutorials and have started implementing your tuts to create YouTube videos for my website on product reviews.

I have a blog post on best electric shavers 2017 where I have reviewed best electric razors. Link: https://10ideal.com/best-electric-shavers/

I want to ask what would be the best way to feature these products via YouTube. Shall I use some sort of a builtin slideshow template or create everything from scratch. Are those templates fast in rendering or it will be quite a slow process. I am a bit confused whether to use plugins or not. Please mention its pros and cons.

Waiting for your kind response.

You know, it's actually unfair of us to ask for new videos, updates and whatever. You've got a family, a busy life and your passion for making videos (and often FX that, even with a tutorial, we can't make look as good as your result). There's a part of me that wants stuff to update often on your site but the adult side on me says that that's just childish. I love what you do, Andrew, but don't feel pressured into constantly churning out content because of pressure from us. If you feel like you need to post up something often then post a quick picture or a 30 second video of something you've been messing around with. That way we still get content and there is less pressure on you.

You have started a vicious cycle: you make great tutorials and for that it requires lot of time and effort... and because your tutorials are great we become more impatient and because of that you want to do it even better and it takes even more time and we become more impatient.... and it goes on and on and on...lol... seriously though very excited about new tips and techniques and really appreciate the effort. :)

Hey Andrew, I think you're underestimating the value of your own creative process. I'd love to get a "developing an original concept" Tutorial, in which you take us through the journey you describe above but actually taking us through how you did it. I would value it even if, in the end, you don't create a finished product. When looking at the above images I wonder, "How did he decide on that?" or "when I get similarly stuck, what would AK do?" It's very different from your normal tutorials but wouldn't it be awesome to do a tutorial on struggling with a design? It would be less polished but maybe more valuable because of it. You have mentioned in the past that what you do is lees about recreating a final product and more about expanding your AE vocabulary for our own work (this is my own paraphrase)
Thanks for everything you do!

I agree here. Some of the best videos out there are "on the fly" Vids where it seems like your actually with the person doing the tut. I don't know if i am explaining myself right. I know when the instructor misses up you learn 2 things, how to do it right and what not to do but how it can be fixed. I look at your images you posted AK and i want tuts on all of them. Sometimes the easiest most basic thing you can do in After effects is Minc blowing to someone else (ME!) and gets that kick to wanting more.

Mini challenges would be cool. Maybe dump abandoned concepts here (just images) and say "Can you figure out what I did to make this image?" Then after a few days start dropping hints or something. I remember a few people came up with pretty good attempts at the Solar Atmosphere look after you posted the teaser animation but before the tutorial came out.

Andrew said: "The problem is that everything can be a little bit better. And perhaps this mindset is a bit of a curse for a guy that makes tutorials!!!"

Understood and agreed. You don't want your name associated with anything that is beneath "excellent" because it could affect your ability to get work in the fickle and highly competitive TV and film industry. But consider this: You're a teacher. Your students can't produce high quality work until they get past the intermediate stuff. Someone has to do it. Consider producing tutorials under a pseudonym. Consider having tutorials produced by a team, not just 1 guy. A "Video Copilot" tutorial could become just as highly valued as one produced by "Andrew" Kramer". Especially if he chimes in now and then. Much better than silence for months at a time. New products that generate revenue would certainly be suggested if there was a steady stream of high traffic caused by new content. Just a thought...
