Hi, on AE 2020 17.1.4 on OSX I'm encountering a problem and can't find a fix for it. Saber works great up until I save a Project and try to open it again. As soon as I click on the comp that contains elements using saber AE crashes and the error log shows:
Assertion failed: (cursor != end), function forward_backward_iir, file /Users/octavio/VideoCopilot/Repositories/lightsaber_patch/lightsaber/src/gaussian_blur_iir.h, line 42.
Anyone got an Idea how to solve this?

i updated my adobe after effect to the 2020 version and now my saber gives me and error message saying
'SABER HAS ENCOUNTERED AN UNRECOVERABLE ERROR'
and i have no idea what's going on and i have try to reinstall it in plugins folder and preset and they both give me these error please help!

I have downloaded the saber plugin several times in my PC. Somehow whenever I try to download even after using the custom path to the plugin folder,
and i try to open the video codec file it is always empty. I dont know why my computer doesn't show it even after clearly downloading it.
In my other few attempts, i used a different device to download saber.aex file, and shared it via google drive to myself, and then downloaded it again, but ultimately the .aex file cant be copied or moved to the plugin folder.

every time i try to install it and use it it forces the program to not respond. i have watched your tutorial on how to install it through the folders and deleted the old file and reinstalled it that way and it continues to do the same thing. i would really love to use this program as i know many who have used this to make awesome stuff. and I know many others are having the same problem aswell please let me know what I can do to fix this issue

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing Effect Preset with everyone! Is there a trick to doing a seamless loop of one of the circle mask animations so that it doesn't jump too much position wise when it comes around to the beginning of the animation again? Many thanks!

install the saber plugin inside the after effects file. when installing the plugin select custom/adobe after effects/plug-ins/effects. install the plugin inside effects file and you will see the effect when you open after effects. hope this will help

This effect is beautiful, and I can't wait to use it, but whenever I try to apply the core to a mask, it is offset from the mask. They don't line up and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to fix it.

Hi guys,
So I'm using saber on a logo, converted to shapes from illustrator (Each letter and element is a layer on its own). But I'm running into the problem where if I copy my path from the shape layer into the Saber layer, the glow creates a box around the object. (Also to add, I had the saber layer on full workspace size, but as soon as I pasted the path it was bigger so i had to scale it down.) This is where i think my problem is but cant get it right!
If anyone can maybe help me? Maybe you Andrew? Seeing as the AE Developers learn stuff from you and you not from them.

Does anyone notice this takes ages to render!? I mean I had a 1080 x 1920 screen and only had 1 lightning going across the screen but it look more than 2 hours to render 30 seconds......

I cannot download the Saber plug-in for windows as the network drops-out every time. But the Mac version downloads fine!!

I've been using saber for a while now and since updating to After Effects 16.1 I'm having trouble. I'm trying to open a project on which I previously used Saber, and after converting the project to the latest iteration of After Effects, I get an error stating "Can't find entry point for Saber." If I attempt to start a new project and use Saber it says "Invalid Filter." Does Saber need to be updated to be compatible with the latest version of AE?

If you're having trouble after updating to CC2019, re-download and reinstall saber and make certain to check the v16 box, as otherwise it will cause you to pull you hair out.
After you've installed it to the new version of AE, it should show up and function perfectly!

Anyone else having issues in ae2018\19, with 3d and blend modes? The moment I turn the layer to 3d I lose blending modes. Even nested inside a precomp

I love this plugin but will there ever be an update? Let say I have a solid with 10 masks, I wish there was possible to choose all the mask or just one, two or three masks and then apply a new Saber with different settings on the same solid and choose another mask.

Been following VCP for many years now. Just returned to this to refresh for a (text-based) project. Can always count on Andrew's humour to brighten up my editing sessions (or just distract me!).
But most importantly... Bar far THE best After Effects tutorials, products and plug-ins I have ever found. Ever.
I remember in 2005 before the UK release of Episode 3, I spent months rotoscoping a light-saber scene, what a dream it would have been to use this!

1. I am able to get the shape masks and animations going perfectly fine using a text layer but for some of the saber presets it seems to place a border around the text outline layer that I haven't been able to get rid of. How would I go about to ensure that the border does not exist on any of the presets?
2. Is there any way to create a perfect loop using this plug-in?

Issue with 2 masks? Please help
Super easy to add a "layer mask" to give saber a path to follow... BUT when I add a second mask to crop out a foreground shape, saber applies its effect to both masks, regardless of how I specify "add" or "subtract" ect..
My goal is to make a saber path create a light streak in the background, behind some people in the foreground.
What I am doing wrong?

I am seeing tutorials on using Saber with element 3d and text layers. I am not able to get Saber to line up with my element 3d layer and animate with the layer. I other words, it stays put if I pan the camera in 3d space and if I make saber a 3d layer, it disappears all together. I've watched several tutorials on how to do this and none of the methods work. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

This is such a cool plug-in. It actually corresponds with a project I am working on, and was wondering, could this be used like the Alpha Glow Edges effect, where instead of it following a mask, it's following the edge of the alpha layer from an imported graphic or overlay?

These folks are brilliant. Of course this free Saber plugin already has me reviewing my budget to find the pennies to BUY a Video Copilot plugin. And I want save up enough that I can take 4-6 weeks away from the world to watch VC tutorials.

Hi guys, fantastic plugin, i just love it. But i have a problem, i'm trying to make a neon effect in an outlined logo but everytime i put the plugin into my outline (following the tutorial exactly) it just doesn't work, i can't see any "saber" in my screen, just everything turns to black and that's it. i am running AE CC 2017 but the most strange fact is that i already did something similar to what i'm trying to do right now about one month ago and it worked perfect.
Please guys someone help me i'm becoming completely crazy about that!

Every time I try to drop this in a comp, it turns the BG black and I can't get rid of it. If I drop it on a text layer, my text isn't centered and I have the black BG again. The only thing I don't have a problem with is the layer masks. Can someone tell me how to fix this please? I'm running CC 2017

FANTASTIC PLUG IN!
One quick question, I've got a shot similar to the one of Sam at the end where the Saber bottom and top are out of shot. When I apply the lightsaber effect and drag the start point off the screen, I get a rounded bottom, as if the Saber is starting at the bottom of the screen rather than off the screen, any tips for this? Thanks guys!

If you CC 2017 -> During install (check the 'custom' in the box) and then browse -> (your AE install folder) that's it. end. and success.

Does the Core Occlusion mode only work for saber effect? Can you get it to work on regular mask? Looking to have some electricity shootout from behind some rocks.

Edit** So, I don't have a transfer mode for the saber. I noticed on the video it's like it's own layer. But on mine, it's just an effect. Right next the to word saber is the word reset. And I can't seem to get two sabers going. Any ideas?

How can you do 2 sabre effects at a time. For example, a sword fight. Do you have to do one then the other? Also, how to move the screen up and down while I move the sabres to the swords, every time I do this, the mode "screen" doesn't work anymore. Any help would be appreciated.

I do not know exactly what I am doing incorrectly here but I cannot get the saber effect to work properly for text. Once I apply the effect and change the settings to text and select my text layer it creates a box around the text that cuts off the edges so I cannot see the full text. I messed with almost every setting I can think of and am not quite sure what exactly is going on. Please help if you can!

The last 2 minutes of this Tutorial were awesome. So cool to hear such a heart-felt, humble, token of gratitude from the man, the myth, the legend to us fans. That said, the last 45 seconds might be the best 45 seconds of any video on the site. "...Seriously, a million people watched this, I feel bad for them." - Color over life : start and end with different colors without duplicating the layer or effect
- Saber in 3D Space; Ok! I know this is very hard to do but.... realy, it would be amazing seeing this in next version (almost Trapcode particular, but very easier to setup)
- Audio React feature: the brightness, size or even core setting reacting in a audio beat on your comp.

Hey! When I'm using the Wavlet Preset, it has this single line. Basically it's just the mask, but expressed in a neon line. I'm wondering on how to remove it from my video. I've tried everything in the Alpha Mode, and nothing changed. I also inverted the masks, but then it removed the actually wave not the annoying line. (kappa+face palm) Thank you for your time, and continue the great work!

I'm sorry to post a comment with a bug report but I don't know where else I can describe the problem. Isn't something really important.
When this plug-in came out I downloaded the v.1.0.38, the installer gave some problem with the installation process. If I went to using it and closing AfterFX, Windows gave me an error with the application (AfterFX has stopped working...blablabla).
Now with v.1.0.39, Windows doesn't give any error message after closing it, which is fine, but if you go to see all the processes in the task manager AfterFX stays open (just using the saber plug-in). Is a problem related to my hardware or it's a bug?

Hi Andrew. I haven't visited your website for years. Probably because it didn't make me good money quick. Well several years later here I am again. I have followed you when you was doing color correction on wedding videos and look at you now, working on Star Wars. Most people would go over the top after your success but you just changed to a better.

I'm saying this because I was learning after effects to get out of poverty not because of love. But your success is a prove that the love towards passion is more important than monetary gains. I feel like a dog chasing meat and ending up with an empty stomach in the end because of mindless chasing. Your work is not just teaching us to be a better VFX artists but to be a better person towards this art. Thank you to prove me wrong about my ideas of the world and giving me strength to chasing my dreams thorough your work. And thank you and your teams hard work for us. Best wishes.

I'm trying to combine something I created in Element with something I created in Saber. Basically, I want to have the Element object behind the Saber object (circular) then move through the Saber. I can do it by precomposing the 2 different objects then manipulating them in 3D space, but it doesn't give the look I want, where you can see the Element gradually moving through the Saber. Any ideas?

I'm trying to get the background for the Saber layer to be transparent, but nothing I try works. I've tried changing the Transfer Mode to Screen, but when I move the layer, it still shows as black. Any help would be appreciated.

Is it possible to use a text animator with Saber? I've tried using animate in by word and it does not affect the saber layer when the core is set to the text layer. Is this going to be possible at some point?

One question - As Iain mentioned, the tutorial doesn't clarify how to get the effect to work with Element 3D, which looked really cool. I tried making the text in E3D, but didn't see a way to select it from Saber. Any chance you could give us a quick clarification?

Awesome plug in!! Does not quite work out for the roto purist (like me)
Problems occur with roto using saber plug in when you try to use subtraction masks .. saber plug in does not care if it is an add mask or subtract.. because is a mask the effect gets applied to both roto saber and subtract masks. If I disable masks using the plug in all masks are disabled including my roto. I tried to create a work around by precompossing the saber roto and do subtracts on precompose .. does not quite work out right due to light fall. Guess when doing sabers I will have to stick to traditional way.

I have a mistake when i make it work on text layer, After effects crash but on a solid it's good. I'm on windows 10. It's my computer or something else ?

Hi there! For some reasons the plugin won't install and tells me that I'm authorized to use it or whatever. It's a win.exe file. I have after effects cc 2015 on windows 7 64 if anyone can help? Thanks

Does anyone know how to export from premiere and get a really high bpc? I output from after effects in 16bpc, but when I export from premiere in the youtube 2160 4K preset, my optical flares glow becomes ramped down and I just want it to look the way it did in after effects. Does 4K have anything to do with this, would remaking my comp 1920x1080 help, or is there a way to fix this issue and still export at 4K res?

I just happened to go use the original plugin only to find it doesn't work with later versions. This is a much improved version too. Many thanks for all your hard work
