Ideas for RIOT GEAR 2

We are currently working on a new version of Riot Gear, our popular organic stock footage collection. The release is planned for the end of this year or early next year.

What I need from you are unique ideas for FX elements we should include. We have already added over 6 new categories and have several more in production. I'm listening...

How about a swarm of bats? Have them flying toward the camera and flying from one side to the other. Someone mentioed ice, yeah, that's a "cool" idea as well!

I thought i would just go through the old blog entries and found this. It would be really cool to have another riot gear product. I think you should definatly have some ice effects, maybe some fire effects aswell as stuff with a mechanical feel (not sure how to describe what i mean) still loving the first one tho and cant wait to get ae2 in september. Thanks for inspiring me Andrew.

If possible. what about some tv noise preset that lets you use your own video and control the noise progressively...

like start out clean and slowly "noise out", but still being able to use your own video...

just thought that'd be cool...

I would love to see any of these:

-Chemical reactions done in petri dishes, like they used for The Fountain effects.
-Dust / Flour filmed in high-speed in front of a black background, falling, spilling, drifting in the wind, etc...
-cream mixing with coffee
-spiral vortices formed by dripping ink into a bowl of cream after stirring it rapidly.
-milk / cream being dropped into water, and directionally lit to form clouds
-cornstarch mixtures dropped into water
-shear-thickening fluid put over a subwoofer speaker emitting a constant tone. (This does some very strange stuff, and its behavior changes based on the pitch of the tone)
-ferro-fluids being manipulated by magnetic fields. Might be interesting to mix this with cream or a cornstarch mixture and see what happens
-any sort of electric sparks, lightning, etc. filmed w/ a high-speed camera

I also like the idea posted above of doing a 180 and going sleek / mechanical / robotic, rather than organic.

Hey Andrew,

I am not sure if this would fit the "Riot Gear 2"

But would you start thinking on the name like "CYBER FX" or "Cyber Journeys"

Please, consider this footage for a new series.

I think most off the FX requested have been done a million times by various others. It also seems like most of the stuff gets to us after it was a trend for some time before. Not bashing but I think it would be nice to get a collection of elements that haven't been used 100 times already to the point where people are like "Oh it's the light trails again, or the growing vines or what ever." Sorry if I sound sour. I really love every thing you guys are doing. I'm just looking for new thing to keep the scene fresh!

Some suggestions would be Smoke FX not so much misty fogs but more like streamy whispy smoke like off of a cigerette sitting still. Watching cigerette smoke swirl around I think is something incredablly hard to reproduce. Not sure how this guy did this effect. But it's been baffling me for some time. It may take some rewinding and playing back in slow motion, but the smoke that radiates of this bulb it nuts.

In the still you can see it made up from doodle of letters and trees and such. WOW.

Sorry Drew What every you come up with I'm sure we'll all love it.

Is it possible to make something like this with 3rd party plugins in AE?

First off: Riot Gear rulezzzzz.
Back to business.
How about some robotic and/or industrial looks.
To give an pointer: When I think about industrial stuff, refinery's come to mind, the long pipelines. Also robots assembling cars, with sparks flying around. Small parts unrecognizable parts being assembled into one huge recognizable piece.

Andrew...Your work deserves to be in Hollywood. I bought all your products. I really liked your Riot Gear I. My recommendation for the second release will be to have a section for the romantic genre. I would personally like to see a section for wedding films (Including cheesy effects and textures). I promised my friend to edit her wedding film but can't find decent effects as i'd like it to stand out from the rest! You can help me out. Take your time but please release quality. Expecting this to be twice as boom as the first Riot Gear . Peace OUT!

- How about some high tech transitions and lower thirds.
- blowing sand revealing chiseled text.
- tire tracks.
- various doors-grungy or medical style- morgue.. opening to reveal text...
- crawling insects across the screen.
- eyes and eyeballs.
- scalable photo frames that are created in after effects rather than photoshop they are built around the imported footage or picture.
- pre-built filmstrip effects for ae.

Tribal tattoo images much like the one you use to have in your green video copilot banner. They seem to be popular nowadays.

I dont believe that was mentioned in the requests i had read. however apparently lots of people like ice.. Possibly a tutorial on how to make a nice icy effect in the future? ^^

It'd be great to have a section where we could see what people are doing with Riot Gear. Might be good for sparking everyone's creativity. Even if it were just like YouTube links or something, I think it'd be pretty sweet.

How about a complete 180 from the last one. Super slick, ultra tech elements. Interface vector elements, generic animated 'console' type animations, clean/simple/useful textures. Think Chris Cunningham style work on the Bjork video 'All is full of love' mixed with the elegance of Syd Mead's (Tron, Blade Runner etc.) ultra sleek design style. Would be super useful for web & kiosk design also. Thanks.

Some dust effects, growing plants, textured walls, film burns and flashes, glass breaking to make the camera lens look like its breaking and whatever else is on here. this next riot gear is going to be amazing!
You know what would be awesome is something like what I read someone else post earlier.

Weather mattes, like rain, snow, hail.......

I like to do the Sin City Rain look, but it doesn't always look as good, obviously comparing their equipment to my MacBook Pro.

Also, miscellaneous rays of lite would simplify things a little bit too.

Maybe some sweet generated backgrounds might top it off a bit.

Whatever you put on there, I'm sure it will rock!

Hola Andrew.

In reading through this entire list I think pretty much every conceivable option has been thrown down for your consideration. I'm a riot gear user in my day to day work and can tell you that beyond giving a shopping list that Artbeats or any other stock library will have, the thing I would look most forward to in a RG2 collection would be the ability to create the organic elements in the computer as opposed to pre-existing ones. For example, there must be a hundred requests for Ice above but I know of no stock ice footage pre-keyed or matted that will give the reflections/refractions of light reacting to that element that I am sure they are envisioning beyond creating it in a 3D program (PLEASE USE 3DSMAX IF YOU DO THIS) and using the post production tools to composite it over the footage being used. I know the textures for Ice are very important in getting realistic looking results so those would be the elements included with each different category in an RG 2.

So if Riot Gear one was a stock of pre-composited elements for use in different creations, Riot Gear 2 would be great as something which teaches the creation of various organic items for creation in the different circumstances needed such as Ice, Water, Flame, Vapors and Gases, liquids of varying flavors and densities, and the textures required for these.

I can tell you that what makes your products and tutorials even more valuable beyond just what they provide in terms of immediate elements for use, is the ideas they spark for composing further creations from there as a result of what you teach us.

Thanks for everything.

Hi Andrew,
No big ideas here, but I encountered a mist (fog) problem.
I am working on a guided nature docu I shot in very misty conditions, a very sweet white kind of floating fog, somewhat mystical.
Of course I missed some scenes and had to film them in bright sunlight with a nice blue and cloudy sky.
I saw your tut with the baseball sky, but I cann't find the right and natural mist effect to match the original misty scenes. And the fractal noise fog effect doesn't work either.
Maybe something is this direction? Greetz.

hi every one and hi to the king of the jungle sir andrew .here are some detailed ideas .now some of them been done but we want to have them and you can make it happen.
First- breaking the camera lense you can see it in the video game called HAZE .
2- make prekeyed slashes you get hit by a knife or a sword you get slashed -deep bloody ones.
3- john woo style .flying pigeons white ones for slowmo shots .
4- we want steam .hot blowing steam.
5-you take a side footage for an AK47 been fired or any caliber you see the shell ejecting in slowmo or fast with smoke
6-now this one is difficult .in Xmen3 when rogue her face changed to dark you know that scene something like that.

Hey Andrew

Maybe some broken or shattering glass, ice, filmFX, more running (dripping) paint instead of .jpgs as in RG1.

I'm sure it will be awesome as usual. Can't wait!!
Hello,

Film burn, scratchs, and flash frames etc for film simulation works and old movie effects. Count down clocks, all the cinematic elements like the 8mm SD clip on the old movie tutorial.

Maybe for Riot Gear 2, a collection of elements for big movie title designs, more bleeds into different fabrics, or even a new dvd collection of various types of Hollywood style title design sequences, horror film style, dripping elements, Big Action Packed titles like the 3d titles in the Designer sfx demo.

01.26 more titles like these, as it ssimilar to the red tutorial on the Riot Gear. "Number 23" movie trailer text effects

I definitly agree with Alexey Pekarin.

- Video of separate trees,
- bushes,
- waterfalls
- grass
- other nature and mechanical prematted elements.

That stuff can really great cool stuff ! You'll probably find a good solution to create this kind of things Andrew, if you find the idea a good one.
And of course, some explosions and fire n stuff like that is not bad either.

hey... i brought your riot gear a while ago... its an amazing collection, i'm currently using it in a music video im doing... will send you a link when its completed. the only downside was the size of the HD footage,720p... which limmited its use. however i did work around it by auto tracing it that way i could scale it as far as i desired.
please could you shoot in true HD 1920x1480... or at least somewhere near... also how about adding multiple layered vector images that we can animate in AE, i have noticed a lot of that stuff around latley... and as far as tutorials go how about creating a Flash website using the new AE and Encore CS3 flash output...

thanks.. your a big help...

I just loved M20's typo. "Serious Composting 2" lol. My garden could do with it too!

Having made the joke though, it is a good idea. I also think an offline copy of the existing 40 tutorials as a DVD would be a handy product to have as well. Another worthwhile tutorial writer has recently done this with his 'back catalogue' and I find it a good addition to my library. have a think Andrew.

Also, a lot of the ideas I'm seeing here do seem to overlap the range of material in Action Movie Essentials so give thought to AME2 as well as RG2.

I liked the 'Pleasant Gear' idea too.

Here is the idea which might not be good for RIOT GEAR 2, but very good for a separate product or series of products:

prematted video elements for video matte painting/environment creation.

- bushes,
- waterfalls
- grass
- other nature and mechanical prematted elements.

IF you like it, make it and it's popular - you can send me a copy

First of all - Thank you Andrew for your great work you're an inspiration to us all.

Disclaimer (don't know if anyone already mentioned it)

I would like to see some effects similar to Darren Aronofsky's movie "the fountain".

Wich in this case, the special effects was shot using micro-photography of chemical reactions on tiny petri dishes. And it looks fantastic.

Hey Andrew, love the website and blog !

Some cool ideas, first, it is NEEDED, the 4 elements :

Air
Water
Earth
And Fire

For the air, it would be cool to have more fog, smoke and clouds.

For the water, I found after effects plugins but, they don't work very well, it would be really great to have like, water splashes, water leaking effects, droping.

For the earth, dirt would be cool, like dirt droping, dirt explosions, dirt clouds, dirt fog, and dirt debris falling.

And for the fire, well, many possibilities, various fires, different sizes, different forms.

Then, some other things that would be great, would be like, the painting drops from the RIOT GEAR 1, but this time, they would splash on the wall, and like, drip slowly down...That would be good for blood or other stuff.

BTW, loved the Designer sound fx, it is your best product !

More of the same would be great. Water is always good, molecular level stuff, energy fields, freezing effects, dust and dirt particles that are able to slow down and speed up...veins would be good too for transformation type effects like changing into creatures or being poisoned. No matter what I'm getting it but any of those would be nice.

a pint of Guinness.

i agree with Jeff. if you build it, i'll buy it.

maybe something with pre-made particle effects? flowing generic backgrounds that might be used in corporate (gag) videos.

i'd like to request a tutorial on something basic that i've just never picked up: exporting movie files as prematted and pre-keyed. i've got several elements of my own, and would like to know how to re-export them so that i can use them as easily as i do clips from action movie essentials. guaranteed this is some basic channel setting, but could make for a useful and fast tutorial or something,

*Pre-keyed fire
*Anything with shattering glass
*Force field(You know.. the classic one^^)
*Interview with Sam Loyah describing how he feel being used
*Blood coming down on the lens.(Like in the James Bon intro)
*"Neo-like" bending down while the bullets fly over him(without the bullets, just the "streching")

Thanks!
That really cool looking "exposure light flash" of yellowish and reddish colors that is produced by 16 mm film cameras would be awesome to be able to just drop over video footage... And maybe some actual keyed footage of ink being thrown through the air so we could composite it in for some 300 like blood...
Jeff (NoodleMaps)

I'm all for the Ice and Fire effects. Honestly though, if you make it, I'll buy it. Simple as that. So... Kind of like that Field of Dreams film. If Andrew builds it...
Riot Gear the first was sort of an all purpose pieces of the puzzle thing. So I think you should just give us different pieces of a puzzle. Explosions and shatter effects would be a good way to go. Like in the first riot gear you give us a whole bunch of grungy textures that we can mess with until we have something completely original to ourselves. I think that is a good way to go with the 2nd. Maybe some ripple type explosion effects where each one varies just like the ink drops did.

Otherwise if you do too many things like someone else already pointed out, some of the things might be better suited for Action Movie Essentials or a different DVD in general.

I agree with the suggestion for other genres of textures, perhaps in addition to grungy textures you could have, shiny and/or smooth, metallic, plastic, porcelain etc etc, perhaps splitting them into "organic" and "man-made" textures or something like that. These added types of textures would compliment the elements people seem to be suggesting, such as the ice and glass effects many have suggested would go well with metallic or shiny and smooth textures. Also more grungy textures too, they are dead useful, perhaps some corrugated iron or something? Perhaps you could also get ideas for extra elements by looking through your other products like Designer Sound FX and creating elements that match those abstract sounds.

Cheers,

Hedley

Most of the people here are going for elemental effects, or textures, a broken lens effect, and some slow mo' different calibur bullets to be shot out of guns. (though maybe that'd be best for action essentials 2) and also a kind of acid burn tape screw up effect, like in fight club or Grindhouse: planet terror. Though for the broken glass you could probably just buy a bunch of thin glass pieces & a high quality camera with a white background, break the glass, tape the sides back into position. Put them up to the camera so you can't see the tape and take a picture on the white background.

Personally i'd like to see some kind of sparks effects & flying elemental bits, like flying acid into the skin, and some kind of overlay to put under the "film" layer + a reveal that could get an organic flesh look with the burning skin. I'd also like to get some sort of digital snow or rain effect, or possible a heat wave look.

I also thought that the "soundwave" effect posted up earlier could be cool, maybe we could some similar things from it, like when theres an explosion and theres a cheesy sort of shockwave transparent which we can see, or maybe the death star blowing up look.

I'd also like a sort of "MIB" dust wave look, or kind of one of those "walls of sand" that we hear about from the desert, just some kind of way to get people to be engulfed in dust. A way to do a nuculear explosion could be cool too, just having the screen going white seems a bit lazy. Title effects are allways welcome, with things like electricity or electric mist going round a title, sort of like in the trailer for the game of "starcraft 2". I know you can allways do some electricity in premier, but it's not the same. Silly rotating metal Title effects are cool too, like in southpark or celebrity deathmatch, or any low budget metallic title looks.

some sort of dripping blood effects could be nice too. Also some tutorial ideas (i know i'm not supposed to submit them here, but you've got 380 in that section anyway) some matrix bullet time effects, some cheesy energy ball fractals for street fighter kind of stuff. But what i'd also love is a kind of predator style cloak look, as well as how to get some really GOOD looking thermal vision or night vision looks (since night shot on camera's isn't the best effect or way to do it).

I would suggest some track mattes and some tutorials on how to effectively integrate them into motion graphics/film projects.

You can have some of those ipod characters dancing around like in the James Bond movies! ...and then maybe they can morph into flames, ink, animals, solid objects, transitions or whatever.

I suck bad at texture creation, so you can definitely include some nice sci-fi textures; I'll buy those as an individual collection!

What textures would I'd like to see:

alien skins & eyes, ceiling & wall textures, corridors, ducts, leather seat materials, boot materials, armor, weapons, vents, grates, rust, metals, numbers, control panels, circuitry, hoses, floors, cloth, damage, satellite textures, pipe textures, hatches, doors, flares, girders, handles, containers, hulls (lots of these), logos, human faces & skins, basic materials, symbols, dirt maps, and tiles.

You can create different varieties of these textures by making clean and dirtied up vrs. Also, include alpha, bump and spec maps.

Hi Andrew: Your products and tutorials are wonderful! Can't wait for Riot Gear 2...

How about adding some grungy film effects? Like film frame burns, leaders, countdowns, flares, scratches, etc. A section or collection like that would be great!

I just hope that it comes out in a few months. Your stuff is so good it's hard to wait.

AND PEOPLE, you can't ask a magician on how he does his tricks. Some things are Andrew's secrets, as long as he shares the final product at a great price is all that matters.

How about lots of timelapse footage. Like generic day to night interstate footage, or people in a generic downtown shot.

Dust effects like the title for the movie Blow.
Dust that could be added to a road or made to look like a ghost.
Glass cracks, breaks and shatters.
And various weather effects would be great (eg: to add to windows to make it look like it is really raining or snowing out).

Y'know, it's hard stuff to get your products from Venezuela, so I think I just can't get them

Although, for you people who WILL buy it, what about some 300-style blood? Maybe some lava lamp effects? Lava explosions, lava pouring? Some sweat drops flying? Cool TV noise, and hologram noise? Man, even that microscope amoeba idea is cool.

Hopefully I'll be able to get this products in the future, though... And I know anything Master Kramer comes up with will be awesome. Won't it?

1) The broken the camera lens idea sounds good.

2) 3d elements would be a nice addition (not sure how this could be done though).

3) Cloud replacements shots, where the camera is moving along using a dolly rather than just hand held.

4) Acid buring into or through text would be nice.

5) Sand, snow and rain tutorials... with the camera looking down through at the ground. (i think you do a rain effect in one of your promos).

6) a realistic film burn effect. that would be ace!

Can't wait till this comes out!
Craig.

stock footage of waterfalls, electricity, wind, for the still pictures of some really futuristic looking stuff. Have some lighting effects kinda like a ball of light or something.
yea all the elements are really cool. You know sortta like pokemon. Fire, Ice, snow, rock, pyskick, electric, grass, water.

and just a personal opinion. You should have like a tornado of dust but make it look really cool and futurisctic.

Hi Andrew!
It would be really cool to add some energy fields like in Dragon Ball Z or Sonic booms or power booms ( like in Smallville when Clark hit someone with a lot of power around his arm appears power boom).
Thx!

i second (or third or fourth) what's been said so far:

-cracked glass
-water (why not?)
-fire (cause you've already got water)
-acid/film burn type stuff
-sparkle-type stuff could be useful. maybe a new product: pleasant gear?

i'm waiting on my designer bundle. just ordered it & am excited to break it in. i'll probably have something more insightful after i've given RG1 a full once-over.

great stuff. keep it coming.

What about one tiger, robot, or something else, pull out a computer screen. Or flowers growing to out a screen. Maybe broken the computer screen glass.
Like this: http://otvali.ru/photos/fotoshopnye_kreativy_foto:20881.html

Rainbow effects in a motion.

Water effects (metioned) will be great.
Or water drops in a surface, or glass window. Tear in faces.

Acid (metioned) corrosion is very interesting also.

I love streaks ( not problem if is a organical "streak"?) too, maybe back and front a character, like as spiral.

And thanks, Andrew, you teach me very much with yours tuts.

Hmm..

Fire effects,
Water effects,
Ice,
maybe animated starfield effects?
maybe even some animated characters walking on green screen for keying?
Definatley some glass effects,
broken camera lens? Like the lens braking, the lens broken, and different variations?
ready to key effects? like comets, falling stars, buildings, explosions.
maybe some particles?

That's all I gots.
Hey Andrew,

I wouldn't mind seeing "people in action" for keying. Sports, etc...

Also, You might want to do a compilation of those wonderful music scores you use in your promos (WHICH YOU HAVEN'T ANSWERED MY TWO INQUIRIES AS TWO WHERE YOU GET THEM!!!!)

I really like the idea of Alan of MICROSCOPE effects, like a virus organic looking spreading. I think this can be seen in resident evil but am not sure.

3d stuff integrated in AE would be aweome.

PS:I was wondering, the effects seen in matrix, are they all 3d or can some be done in AE. I was thinking of the fast spining camera around the actor or when he lands on the ground and all those pieces shatter around him.

Some electrical and liquid effects would be awesome.
Using them together could make some very interesting tittles.

And like most people already said, ICE.
And that could also be used with water to make a good combo.

I find myself looking at this website more and more in anticipation of a new tutorial. Fantastic site guys and credit to Andrew: Dogs bits mate.

I wouldnt mind a few water effects myself. Now if we are also talking tutorials: How about pouring water into an invisible glass!

I have only just bought RG1 and thats only because i have only just seen this website, I WILL be buying the 2nd one and the rest when you make them. To be honest Andrew, anything you do will be great. But seeing as your asking:

Weather efects, lens effects, music effects (Keyed audio bars to music), Ice cubes (Mentioned) and yes i agree with someone above about less dirty full on effects more for the wedding people as we could use that too.

Sign me up Andrew, You the man...

anything with a nice motion, so you could have like,

here's my list.

* Water/liquid effects.
* Glass cracking (spiderweb types as well as straight) along with tutorials on how to make the crack appear realistically (I'm thinking of Jurassic Park 2 here. the scene with the T-Rexes pushing the trailer over the cliff and the windscreen slowly cracking wih the pressure on it.
* Suitable sound FX for the above.
* plate glass shatter (in slo-mo)
* Lightning (with thunder bursts)
* Acids and burns
* Animated spatters i.e. blood/paint dripping down walls
* pre-keyed 'real' fire.
* rain, hail and snow

more later if I think of anything..

oki, i go :
- water/rain effects (like heavy rain on a windows or falling on the ground)
- dust/sand effects (like some wind in the desert or on a dusty road)
- glass impact (like a shot on a bulletproof windows, or exploding windows)
- some interesting fracal noise like the one on Riot Gear 1.
- realistic blood effect like blood dripping on a wall, splattering on the camera or pouring from a head cut !
- Some fire effects like how to burn a logo or explosions
Gary
-liquid effects

-storm effects

-text effects (like text getting forged by lightning)

Even if you dont consider those ideas, i think it would be great if the stuff you made in RG2 could be used in random footage and not just title openings and promos (which by the way is great)

I always thought trailers were better then movies and stuff, but if we could have discreet effects that would also be great.

PS: florian, he is now shooting with the JVC HD 200 --> dont mess with that

Cant wait

-bloodstreams, organic, in tubes or covering the whole pictures is nice. you need to dig deep in biochemistry if you wanne make it real

-some shatter effects, also the one that breaks camera lenses as mentioned before (for example, that a person can smash/kick agains it and the lens cracks and shatters away. or that a glas plate slowey cracks/burst)

-lightstreams (like in your tutorial), lightingburst.

-shockwaves!! in air, in water.

Good luck

Bart

Can't wait .

Here's what I think would be nice in a package like riot gear:
- Water effects(drops, maybe waves or someting)
- growing stuff(like plants, flowers, the kind of things that you see growing on walls in videoclips)
- Maybe some insects(like flies, butterflies, spiders, or ladybugs)
- I don't know if it's the right sort for this kind of package, but some film shots from just some buildings(taken from a car, or if possible from above or something. When I try to bring cgi stuff in my footage it will never work because my DV camera isn't really trackable 'cause of the bad quality image. Since you're shooting with a XL2(right?), I thought that might help some people out.

Well, good luck with it, and I can't wait 'till it comes out .
Oh and by the way, how do you get the footage? the textures and inkdrops and stuff, do you film an photograph that yourself?

Florian
Hi Andrew, I think like some reel good explosions. That you can use if you are exploding a wall, you can aply the shatter effect and stuff, if you know what i mean!?

Thanks

By the way, looking forward to the release, gonna save up some money

As previously mentioned, Cracked lens effects, as if something has broken the camera lens,
Water droplets on the camera lens, to achive the effect of fake rain,

Looking forward to the beggining of next year!

Will,
- water drops sound good, but they should be recorded with a high-speed camera...

- have you heard about the methacel effects they did on Star Wars Episode III ?

- fire at high speed...

- maybe debris & ashes flowing around... very slow - or dust particles in water, backlit...
