Didn't work...You only include the smoke and nothing else in the project. I have a huge white background on my smoke that covers up everything when I try to duplicate it.

So, the newer version of Particular doesn't have "Rotation" by itself. It's broken up between x,y,z. So the expression "random(0,360)" doesn't work the same way now. Any thoughts on how to get the same effect? Everything else seemed to work. Thanks!

Concise, complete, useful, interesting and hilarious. THANK YOU for taking the time to put together so much free quality content. I found you through the recommendation of Corey Barker over at KelbyOne (at the end of his Intro to Ae class). I was hoping the team would release more content for Ae but with your site, it looks like I won't need to bother bugging them for it ^_^ It seems my skills in Photoshop will transition very smoothly to Ae and man am I ever glad for that. Great stuff, looking to make a fog layer for the background of my film, haven't really found anything out there to help.

This might sound silly but im just a beginner I'm currently running cc on adobe after effect . Hit F4 to Toggle Switches in the Timeline. Or instead, hit the Toggle Switches button at the bottom of the Timeline. On the layer you want, hit the drop down in the TrkMat column. There you can find you Luma inverted Matte.

HEllo, I recently purchased the new Optical Flares Bundle and was watching your 'smoke screen' tutorial. I work with After Effects CS5 and can't seem to locate the 'Alpha Inverted' selection to make the initial cloud photograph transparent. My cloud is WHITE and the backround for the picture is BLACK, the opposite of what you used in the tutorial...how can I make my cloud transparent...???

try usin the 'Luma Matte' instead of the 'Luma Inverted Matte' used by Andrew in the tutorial. I have white clouds and black background too, and 'Luma Matte' seems to work to make the background transparent.

lol.. he got it from google bro.. or a buddy but its on Google. Type in "Smoke Element". Its the first one. Has same measurements, specifications everything.

Yeah, I downloaded the project files but it's a jpg. The one in Google Image search is jpg. When I try to do the matte for the smoke here it doesn't work and the colorama effect just adds the color as a ring around the smoke.

Hey guys, I have the same problem is Ian and I don't feel like this question was answered. I downloaded the .jpg from this site, but as we all know, a jpg file does not have an alpha channel. So either everyone else used a different cloud image with no background (aka, using a PNG or TIFF) or they are all experiencing the same problem. Does anyone know where I can find this image without a background OR perhaps I'm doing something wrong? Thanks.

@ Alex,

You're not doing anything wrong, that's just your transparency setting, there's a little checkered box at the bottom of the comp window, click that and it will change the way it displays transparency in a layer, either in black or checkered squares

nice mate( yes I'm from australia) I like the pace you go at, it doesn't make me feel like an idiot, if somthing goes too fast you can always rewind you know what I mean, also the occassional funny comment keeps you focused, keep doin that man, makes it entertaining as well as informative, far too many nerds on the internet, they bore the shit out of me and often make me sit though half an hour of what I already know, nice work I like your work flow especially, easy to followat least for an experienced user!

hey Andrew I really love this tutorial,
I wish to use this in my little ucoming movie as a title.
But the only thing stopping me is that I can't find a smoke brush that looks anything like a cloud.

Greatest tutorials i've ever seen. Andrew, im waiting for some tricky one. Like, make a 3D map in MAX (a box on a flat eq) and use it in AE. For example, want to see some particules bounced on the box and drop on the flat randomly. A real 3D in AE

Hey Rey, regarding smokey text;
maybe try using a blocky font in white and track/luma matte it to see through to the smoke Andrew demonstrated creating in this tutorial.
Could slightly rotate a copy of the smoke in 3D and bring it up through the text layer ( forward on z axis) to smother the letters, increasing opacity of rising smoke and increasing blur on text. Have not tried it though ;-]

I have a problem Andrew, maybe you can send me a email or something regarding the resolve of it
In After Effects, after I set every layer 3D and Create a New camera ,, 50 mm preset uaually) when i click on that image that is suppose to give me the ,,Orbit Camera Tool'' and,, Track Z'' etc...it doesn't pop up anything..i just click on it and nothing happens
I also have another problem with the camera when parenting to a Null Object, when I click on the Null and move it along, it doesn't give me immmediate results ...like how i'm draging it....it just tells me that i'm draging it..when i'm finished draging it..it puts it in the place where I drag it...so i can't really see where i drag it. I hope you understand...I think i'll make a youtube video with my problem since no one seems to help me on it.
My computer is high-end...Q6600 Processor...good motherboard.GPu..etc...but some things just won't work right

Hey Sir Andrew, great tutorial huh. Anyway I'm just a beginner in Adobe After Effects. I have a question for you anyway. What's the difference in using After Effects CS3 and After Effects 7. In your Basic training you are using CS3, but most of your tutorial you are using AE7. Does it make difference in memory usage, like previewing in AE7 faster than in CS3, or AE7 is stable than CS3?

And also why is it hard to do previews on AE compared to video editing programs like pinnacle studio, where you can easily preview your work in realtime from beginning to end. It's hard to preview a composition with more than 1minute length in AE. Ows, maybe this question can be answered by Adobe, but I would like to hear your opinion bout that also.

Not sure if you read these, but why do you have to post these tutorials? They are amazing and its giving me a hard time to stand out from the rest of the AE User field.

In my newest video (I haven't released yet) I have a smokey foreground. And well, I gotta scratch that now because the people reviewing it will just call me a "AndrewKramer" wannabe.

Aargh, why do you have to be soo amazing... :-\

Oh well, good tutorials nonetheless.

hey, m still in highschool and i am so grateful to your tutorials. they have been great to work from and itsa great becaouse we arnt doin anything in after effects for a few more years, ma running a trial and itll run out soon so im tryin to do as many of your tutorials as possible. m saving for full version, but yeh, 1000 bucks is pretty steep for someone without a job, so yeh, thanks.

AK, thanks so much for highlighting the Turbulent Displace effect. I've used it many times in the past to create similar motion out of a still cloud clip. Pretty amazing to see how much organic movement you can get from one smaller single frame element. Kudos, bro!

Hey Andrew,

I am a huge fan, to start off. I have a question regarding your tutorial as i was watching it. You know how some people use stock footage as a luma matte, for example, an ink drop. can you create a an evolving clouds, as you did in this tutorial, as a luma matte for a "revealing mask" effect? i hope this question wasn't too confusing.

Adobe just launched http://tv.adobe.com/ and I can't believe that they didn't license some of your content for use on their site. You can use free photoshop cloud brushes to create the smoke later. Check out Deviant Art for some freebies. You could also find a picture with clouds and borrow one of the elements.
