Why when I put my cracks over the the title in the Title Holder the cracks only show up within the title itself and do not extend past the letters. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? I used tiff and png files for the cracks created in Photoshop. Thanks,

Great tutorial! But as it would be to do the reverse? That is, that the title instead of low relief is high relief, what is falling wall to reveal the embossed lettering.

I'm really confused!
When I created the shatter pre-comp and placed it on top of the text pre-comp, it looked exactly how it should look like, the concrete shattered down and the text was revealed. I don't know why Andrew had to go through all that stuff afterwards...

I get an error when I try to render it, the error says:

This is the kind of stuff I've been wanting to learn. Now...which packs do I need to buy for all of this? I only have the Adobe products. All of them. I don't have any 3D software like 3DMax or any of those.

for those wondering about the sound fx, if you just listen closely, i think he used a mixed of rain fall and ice cracking. does that help you? it's just what i thought.

Pretty cool effect, not cheap at all
Adjusting all the falling dust opacities at once was a terrible idea, though. Doing them separately and letting them last just for a few frames renders for a much better result and it only takes a couple of minutes.
Using a "rough" font works great too, since the inherent alpha adds perfectly to the whole crumbling effect.

I am totally an neophyte when it comes to AE. In fact, I stumbled upon it by accident, if you can believe it. I have a question: I noticed that when you started with creating a new composition, you had already elements in your Project tab(FOOTAGE) with the necessary still pix, etc. Where do I get those elements?

Gday from Oz Andrew and everyone, fantastic effect and good tut, but I have 2 questions 1 is that at 11.23 we jump into final comp ,but make it at 11.30 how is this happening?, also dropping cracks onto title doesnt work for me I am using CS4 could this be the reason? Hey, I have a quick question. Whenever I finish editing a video and render it out, my computer really fails at playing it back. I've tried to watch it in Media Player and Quicktime but for both it lags and jumps around. I was hoping someone could help me with this. I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop with an i5 core and ATI Radeon Premium Grphics. It's also a full HD screen so I don't see the problem.

I was wondering what I need to do to my image to make it "transparent" like the cracked image in this tutorial.
When AK puts in his cracked image it just goes in no problem, but when I try to put in my image it doesn't overlay like in the tutorial.

Just watched the Coriolanus Trailer on YouTube and was wondering if Andrew did that and gave us a how-to or if someone got off easy in the title CG dept.
I rip-off AK's tutorials every now and again but at least i try and tweak it a bit
I even saw a game trailer on Steam that replicated the Ancient Titles tutorial exactly! I vote that there should be a page for sightings Video Copilot inspired videos so we can give credit where credit is due.

When adding the shatter fx. I want to change the position of the rocks, instead of falling down i want it coming out toward the camera or from the front view ( like coming at you). How do i go about that. thanks

It's funny though, how much producers seem to have used especially this Tutorial in the last two months for their own projects and just put other content in to be crumbled, but leaving the whole effect just as it is.

How would i use this effect in duplicate within a project. Example, I want to have 3 lines of text and so i want to duplicate the final comp 3 times so that i can reuse it.. unfortunately when i try, and i change the title, it changes in all 3 lines of text. i have tried everything i can think of short of remaking the entire effect from scratch for the second and third layers. any thoughts and ideas. I know this should be an easy fix, i just cant figure it

I have been going over this tutorial for hours I mean like 5 hours now The PROBLEM im having I when i make the shatter pre comp then try to get thr Title holder into it I dont see the word cumble come up. notice that when I make the adjustment layer in the comp preview there a folder. I dont see one in yours

Love this tutorial but I seem to be hitting a snag.
At 14:21 in the instruction when I run the animation in my Final Comp, I see the pieces fall out of my logo, but the cut out wall does not appear? The wall looks just the same.

The shatter activate and title reveal are completely pointless. Instead in the shatter effect set the render mode to "All". Way easier. Other that that, this is an awesome tutorial as usual.

If you want to create quick dust effect without using paricles, duplicate the "shatter" layer, add a FAST BLUR (blurriness amount of about 20), lighten it with Curves, and put it between the original "shatter" layer and shatter blur (the one used for the shadows) layer. enjoy.

i'm just glad that my suggestions had an impact on the final tutorial. great work andrew, i really learned a lot from you and i still appreciate your work (also the optical flares, riot gear, evolution and of course, action essentials, which btw seem awesome products).
keep up the good work (and please take a look at nuke from the foundry, you'll be amazed by how much more procedural compositing gets using note-based and real 3d environments - of course, motion graphics would be a pain in the as$, ae still rocks that world and will always do, yet...)

Hey thanks allot Andrew but u really make me feel so powerless and sad cuz man u do somethings that if i didn't look 20 times to that settings and the other crazy stuff u do with built-in plug-ins and it come out amazing and really great stuff... then i feel i don't want to go on anymore

Great tutorial, but please can someone help i have done it all and I have tried to render but it keeps coming up with This error >> "After Effects error:$$$/AE/Effect/Name/Shatter=Shatter: Insufficient free memory (unable to allocate 11198616 bytes) (4)" SOMEONE HELP PLEASE

Thanks for the tutorial. One of the difficult things that i find when making effects is the audio part. how do you sync it so perfectly that when the the concrete hits the ground it also sounds like that. and where can i find the audio you used for this effect.

I think you did very well by giving an alternative for the smoke and dust, instead of saying, just buy the action essentials collection, there is no other way to do this, that was good of you!

As corny as your jokes are, you missed the chance to send it to the next level. "Unrealized" Dreams crumbling would have put it over the top, "Unrealized" being the typeface, of course.
Other than the chance to join the elite comedians and failing, I thought the tutorial was pretty genius.
