Hey, on this explosion tutorial the project file doesn't include a rotoscope, could I get a luma matte for it? I just switched to MacBook Pro 13 and cannot use a mouse on it yet, so rotoscoping would take forever. From Marcus

Hi,

Any advise will be highly appreciated. I followed the tutorial, but received this kinda scattered look of the blast in the end. What can be wrong?

constructive critics: poor vfx interaction with the physical world of the footage.

1. the blast so powerfull throws a lot of energy by the blast wave. So the near by carts should look affected by it. actually a lot affected) lifted in the air\off the railroad track

2.after the blast Sam most likely would not finish his run. The blast wave would blow him back away rapidly

3.(subjectively) too much of a debris and chunks of cart

other than that - awesome work, i am a big fan of what u do

I felt it a duty to help all of us who had issues getting the same look as Andrew. What I discovered was the lighting. The lighting was not covering the smoke properly, so all of our videos was looking cloudy, white and washed out. So I went back to the lighting settings and started to change the rotation etc and then the clouds started to appear shadows etc.

Hi Andrew, first thanks for this awesome tutorial, and I have something to ask you, I followed the steps extremely close to you and at the end, the result looks so ugly, like that: http://gyazo.com/1be3e1c86a4645b916e54f98e1c05959
I'm sorry to asking you that, but could you give us the project files of the one that you made please, that would be really helpfull for me.
Thanks Andrew,

judging from the picture, Its your spacing and probably lighting and options with in the lighting, but def your spacing. Set the number to around 1 or 2.
Carson
Make sure your spacing is at 1 and if your using vray renderer change min subdivison to 75 and render to time max to 1 min.

Hi, I've done this tutorial multiple times and I've done similar tutorials like this one. I am very familiar with Fume FX at this point but it seems like no matter how close I follow the tut, my result looks different. I must have a bizarre preset or something is wrong with my copy. Could you provide me with the tut fume fx file? I know it's a lot to ask but it would be SO helpful in diagnosing the issue. Thanks much!!

Ok this makes no sense to me. Why would you create element 3d to work with Cinema 4d but use 3ds max in your tutorials? You had a great opportunity to show off your plug in but instead you kind of showed you don't need it. Or did I miss something here?
Tyler
Element works with 3ds max also or pretty much anything that will export an .obj. This shot was only a camera pan which doesn't have any perspective change, therefore by using Mocha to do the tracking and compositing with rendered elements it is easy to compose this shot. He could of used Element 3d but it wasn't necessary for this specific shot. In no way was he showing you don't need it; as the nature of Element 3D to begin with was to create duplicate many objects easily to make cool and unique effects. Maybe you should watch some of the other tutorials before you go throwing accusations at a free tutorial with many many good compositing tips and ideas.

I have followed the tutorial to the letter but when I do a final render shot it doesn't look anywhere near as good as the final shots Andrew rendered. Would anyone know if he is using Vray, Mental ray, or Scanline for the final render in max. And is there additional adjustments to get the image to look as good? The test renders look the same as in the tutorial. So its that final render I need help with. -Cyrus

Here is a brief explanations of the steps:

1. Track plane in Mocha.
2. Go to first frame, click 'Align to Surface'.
3. Export to 'Corner Pin Only, RG Warp'.
4. AE -> Create new solid, name it 'Corner Pin Track'.
5. Go to first frame, paste tracking data to the new solid.
6. Create new Null Object.
7. Drag Ccorner Pin to Null preset onto the null object.
8. With the null layer active, go up to Effect Controls, Track Layer Pin. Pull down menu, set to 'Corner Pin Track'.
9. Shut off Corner Pin Track layer to hide the new solid.
10. Null Obj should move with the track now. Position it where inserted object will go.
11. Maybe unequal the Scale expression in the Null layer.
12. Bring in the insert. Parent it to the Null Object.

In light of the current situation of the VFX industry, I can only say that this tutorial fully illustrates what VFX artists have to go through to get a certain shot right.

VFX artists are the cinematographers of the new age, where we need to research real life elements, choose camera angles, recolor and relight the scene, put elements (props) to make a scene realistic. What happens behind the scenes where we do rotoscopy, BG preps, color/noise matching and such are often not seen and not appreciated by others.

Think you kinda forgot one thing. You should have brighten up the side of the original train tube when it all exploded, since the explosions are all lighten up, they should have smashed some light on the train tubes as well.

please make the fire and tank destruction in cinema 4d that's how we the cinema 4d users can easily follow your fantastic tutorials

Nicolai
Cinema 4D is for graphical 3d design. Text and stuff. You don't have the great photorealistic renders in C4D.

3DS Max is for advanced editing with visual effects with good rendering.
kago
Yes. It will be good to have to once not try to look for another software or fail many times with the software you use when you can get help. but if there isn't enough help, just see if you can improvise. That is how I learnt C4D. There were not enough tuts when i started. I would be lucky if a tut I needed was featured on a book. back then I had no internet connection. Just paying people with internet to get free tuts for me.

But please Andrew, sometimes remember us.
Bob
Problem is that there is not a single high end tutorial about explosion by C4D in web....this is a shame
kago
At Nicolai.
C4D just like Max is just a tool. What matters is the artist. Have you seen technical breakdowns of an upcoming movie called The last Cause? Plus in Max they use Mental Ray and V-ray like in this tut. V-ray and Mental ray are also available for C4D. I plan on erasing the myth of my tool of choice. C4D.

Why didn't you render the explosion with the tanker destruction? Then the fire would interact with the tanker and give a more natural explosion. It's going to be harder but it's worth it.
james mcbride
here's an idea: Why don't You do it....
Mackenzie Criswell
Correct me if I'm wrong Andrew
But if you were to render out explosions and the tanker destruction in the same comp you would not have near the compositing power. For example we all know that FumeFX renders, more times than not look like shit. So they have to have quite a few color correction fx and other fx applied to them to make them look good. Now if you tried to color correct the explosion you would also have to color correct the tanker which would ruin the shot.
If you wanted more depth to the tanker explosion you could just put some lights on the ground and have them burst a little bit of light when the tanker hits the ground that way you could have some interesting light reactions in your 3d scene, but still have the full compositing power once inside of after effects.
Carlos De La Cruz

Cool FX but not to be critical...which I truly mean because I know I couldnt do this kind of FX HOWEVER, I would think for more realism the shock wave of that size of an explosion would have moved the railcars in front of that exploding tanker car....just sayin....fantastic job though
david
look man, I also don't mean to be critical and i think we all appreciate the honesty but since you cant really make such effect i think its safe to assume your are green in the world of efx and if so, i feel you are not qualified to make any such opinion on a professional who takes a large amount of time to put these tutorials together so that we can learn without having to pull out the credit card out our wallet. Andrew is not going to teach us every single detail, you must be new to the site because you would have already known this. you would also know that there is no room for criticism here, it does not exists.
kago

This tut took a long time to come. imagine if Andrew had animated everything here. It would still be in the making.

I seldom blindly follow the the tutorials. This is becoming more and more the norm as I find myself getting more and more comfortable with AE. I recently upgraded my workstation in a big way so I have a lot more freedom than before.

I think, sadly, Sam must die in this tutorial. I'm not sure how i'm going to do it yet though. Definitely a z-pass thing and some cloning, possibly a quick poser thing blowing at the camera.

this is going to be awesome. I'm 8 minutes into the tutorial and it's fun and you have to think for yourself; like the train extension. Pretty basic thing--if you came from photoshop. Andrews tutorials are by far the best i've ever encountered because so many instructors just tell you what to do and that's that. Andrew explains what's going on, along with the theory of what's going on.

EXTREMELY cool, but how would you have handled putting the reflection of the explosion(s) onto the side of the train cars. They were reflective enough to deserve a little lighting treatment from the brightness of the KABOOM! I know how I would do it, but you always seem to pull out these tricks that look so damn good and are so easy to do!

Hey Andrew, great stuff. Just one thing I do when using fume FX, is i go out and render the fire and smoke elements differently. That way, you can composite them on add or screen, getting rid of the edges, and blending them much nicer. The smoke then gets underlayed, and boom your set to go

Since you have Sam roto and whole shot tracked you might want to add additional light caused by explosion. For example on Sam's face and pars of his clothing. Maybe on ground. What You would definitely want to add is explosion in reflection on rest of the train because it is huge reflective surface and it should be affected by explosion somehow.

I loved learning more about Mocha. Even though I don't have 3dsMax or FumeFX or Rayfire. I still love watching you work, Andrew. I always learn something new. I appreciate the time you take for explaining the "whys" behind things. Thanks again.

I've been following your tutorials since the blemish removal one way back in the day. which i want to say was back in 7th grade. If it wasn't for your tutorials i would have never gotten so far with film. I'm now in my second year of film school in LA and i only have your teachings to thank.
-Thank you for all your hard work you do to help people like us.
