Matte Painting Challenge: Alien Landscape

I had this crazy idea to see if people on Video Copilot wanted help create some stuff for an new tutorial about an alien planet that may or may not resemble the one from the upcoming Prometheus film.

Basically we filmed a short scene where Sam is running from some destruction followed by really bad things and one of the shots we need is the one above. As scary as the palm trees look, I was hoping to replace with some mountains and dark sky and something inspired by the Prometheus film to help complete the world.

Now, if I had a little bit of help doing the background I could start working on the other stuff and we'll just make it a lot better! Plus it would be fun to bring the community together participate in the tutorials, right? Of course your name in the credit and we will even feature some of the best ones on the site for all to see. Plus if you help, I might be able to get this thing done sometime this year!

Directions/Suggestions:

- Replace everything above the horizon like sky and mountains of a desolate planet.
- Design at HD or larger
- I'd like to keep the blue tones for the foreground
- Post a link to your work when you are finished.
- Have fun and be creative!!

The deadline is JUNE 15th!!

Positing your work:

-Post a link as a comment here (Be sure to use a real Email in the input box)
-Post to our Forum here: Forum Challenge

Here is a glimpse at some of our upcoming tutorials. First creating a nature scene using a few plant images surrounding a procedural rocky title. Watch Sample Video.

Then Sam Loya is running from a train that is repeated into the distance during a camera pan.

Be ready, both tutorials coming out this week -- lots of new tips!

Recent Work: Fringe Fight the Future

So much has been going on lately! Returned from a fun and exciting show at NAB 2012, the new After Effects CS6 has been announced and I've also finished some new title work.

This new title sequence is certainly inspired by the original one I created over 4 years ago and was meant to feature the alternate future represented in the episode.

I've added some breakdowns for the work that was involved in the title as well! Plus there may be something interesting in the last credit...

Since I'm talking about intros, I also had the opportunity to create the opening title for the CBS show Person of Interest too. Watch That here.

New Tutorial: Mid-Air Emergency!

In this new tutorial we'll composite the interior of an airplane as the wing bursts into flames. We'll cover green screen keying, 3D tracking with Camera Tracker, particles and compositing live action elements. I've also included a dropping Oxygen mask in the project file for people that want to add an extra layer!
