Our new mystery Plug-in is not quiteready to launch! But almost there!I know, I know...

Once I began working on the tutorial, I realized it neededa few new functions. Even though we are releasing a new free plug-in, it still hasto be good!

I guess I have a bit of a reputation for going over my self-imposed deadlines and it's true. I tend to get comfortable with toolsand begin to see ways to make it better and ittakes time. I tend to push the limits a bit, and I just hope that people appreciate thatwe are releasing things when they are readyand not just because. Obviously we want to be punctual with our releases but if an extra 12-24 hours will make a significant difference, we would rather be known for quality tools than 'crappy tools that come out on time.'

Although I'm getting better at managing my expectations and time it takes to execute...I also love a challenge. Not a good combination.

Right now, we need to do some finaltesting. Then I can finish recording the tutorial. Should be a fun little plug-in once we get it up!

UPDATE 2: Still jamming!! There are no more ends to the candle!! Our programming team is working out some final stuff. I started making a promo video... It's kind of crazy. Not sure how cool the plug-in will be but this promois pretty wild. We are close but there is some insaneamount of work going on right now.

I don't mean to drag it out. I can't help myself...

On another note, what music should I be listening to? I've blown through all my music. There's nothing left!!

Hey Andrew! I just started to being interested into vfx nad playing with Adobe AE and your site helped and inspired me a lot.
I just can seak for myself but no music had such an inspirational impact on me in my entire life like techno music and its related genres like techhuse or deephouse.

I think that you made us wait way too long for an update and this plug-in should be more then free, it should have a custard filling with colored sprinkles on it.
But really, its free and I appreciate you and your staff for taking the time to make awesome stuff for the motion graphics/effects community.

No comment... clearly if you were in that page you must have been wanting that plug-in as well. What counts is not how difficult it is to make a video but how beautiful the video looks at the end. So if a plugin can help me, I'll definitely enjoy.
Why don't you make a video with MSDOS/Terminal while you're at it as anyway After Effects is just a big "plugin" for your computer?!?

Hi Andrew. not sure if you'll read this but I'm just going to say it. Videocopilot used to be this amazing thriving blog and community, you were frequently uploading free tutorials and projects while producing top of the line software and resources for fair prices and EVERYONE loved it! I wouldn't and couldn't have gotten into VFX without your help and I am so grateful for your help, I really am. And the best part was that you really engaged with your community, I remember in a video you said you once re did an entire tutorial just because someone wanted to see it done with a different color. You were a great LEADER to everyone who came here. And with the respect and reputation that got you were able to go off and do other things, work on high end films and that was GREAT! An amazing success story. And for some of it (such as Star Trek) you kept your community going and even used these opportunities to make more tutorials and explain the techniques you used and that was AMAZING TOO! You gave a behind the scenes look at making the real VFX we saw in cinemas. Then with the brilliant opportunity you had on star wars, and understandably that was a massive undertaking but (at least in my opinion) you made a mistake with letting this blog go quiet for LITERALLY 8 months. I mean I know you were busy but no ones that busy that in eight months you couldn't write a paragraph, or even a sentence, on this site to say you were going away for a while to work on something great, and whether you'd be back or when you'd be back. I know people found out what you were doing eventually, but better to hear it from YOU on YOUR SITE to YOUR COMMUNITY. Eight months is a long time to drop everything, especially things you had committed to to your community (such as intercept), I'm not saying you weren't allowed to go away, but you should have tried to explain. Because the big argument I keep seeing here over and over again is that all the (rightfully) curious people keep asking for information, insight into what's going on or how long delays go for and other people keep arguing with them that a community founded on free resources doesn't deserve anything. And to ask for anything would just be ungrateful. Now I get that, but here's the thing. Some of these people have been checking back every few minutes for almost two weeks! Me included. Of course things are getting out of hand! If a restaurant closes hundreds of people don't check back every few days for 8 months just to see if there's a note in the window, but you EARNED that loyalty with consistency and quality. If you are going to be this great leader to all these people then there is some responsibility. Free plugins or not, you have to earn your community, and you can't take it for granted for long before people will start to leave. And now I see that you deleted all the comments and the comment functionality from your last blog post, once again with NO explanation. That was a mistake. It hasn't solved any problems. You've just moved all those people down here to the next post or off your site entirely. So once again people have come to you seeking answers and been ignored. I get that probably it was because of the people nagging to know why you keep missing these deadlines arguing with the people who think that's out of line and that they should stop their whining and blindly wait, but YOU weren't engaging them, not answering peoples questions and not trying to mediate AT ALL. All I can see is a pretty much daily message that the plugin is coming tomorrow and it's gonna be great, so of course people are confused and frustrated (me included). You were set apart from the rest of the competition because you were leagues ahead in engagement and generosity, and you can still see that now with hundreds of people have been desperately seeking word from you as to whats going on. I even saw a comment jokingly saying that you're away in hiding and the people managing the blog are just stalling and imitating you and as silly as that sounds there's not that much proof that this even is Andrew Kramer. You still haven't been in a video, people still haven't heard your voice, just a few family photos and the promise of a mysterious AMAZING new plugin that does who knows what and has no name and apparently came out on the 22nd and then the 29th and now who knows when. All I'm trying to say in the most fair and unbiased way is that to keep deserving this amazing massive community, you don't need to give out free stuff, all you need to do is be there for them when they come to you. Answer their questions, and be real, be honest. And definitely don't try to shut them out by cutting off their voice.

And can I just add that I have no problem with you teasing a plugin without saying what it is. It's a surprise and people, including me, LOVE that. It's exciting! But if it gets delayed almost two weeks I think its time to drop just a little bit of the mystique and give people some insight into what it is they're so desperately waiting for. That's all

The only reason the comments on the latest blog was removed was because of the premiere pro timeline pix Andrew posted. People with their predatory eyes kind of got an idea what the plugin was and he quickly removed the pix then the comment section to keep the mystery going...

its mind boggling how much i see vcp stuff being used lately, most notably in dark matter tv series the bug gun uses a shockwave, a few elements were also seen on some nhra finals last week and countless commercials

When coding, especially python scripts for nuke and etc.. What Gerry said makes sense. That's why I listen to ambient/minimal electronic music while I work. It increases concentration, relaxes me, and mitigates some of the isolation that comes with sitting in front of a machine all day. Some of my favorites are: Mountains, Loscil, Tape, Julianna Barwick, Max Richter, Bing & Ruth.

For creativity and innovation try this method.
Put some earplugs and close your eyes. Breath slowly trying to see what you would like to be done and how. Imagine every detail example opening file , setting project , creating new layer etc.. what ever images come dont force them then slowly shift to question how to do ( whatever you are trying to do
Did ever happen that you have some problem and you are stuck than in morning you remember solution it just pop up? This is same only no wasting time for sleep.

1) The "RENDER INSTANTLY" plugin.
(The nuclear button that lets you render instantly because of incessant client emails asking when it's going to be done).

2) The "MAKE MY CRAPPY IDEA BETTER" plugin.
(Automatically transforms your crappy graphics into eye popping amazing unbelievable work, as if you actually spent time on it).

3) The "AUTO PILOT" plugin.
(Let's you drag and drop on your comp and the mouse takes over and finishes your work for you).

4) The "INSTANT IDEA GENERATOR" plugin.
(Not like the highly useless one currently shipping with AE. But an actual plugin that lets you input parameters such as: youtube links, vimeo links, Pictures etc, and automatically generates bad ass graphics based on your input using highly complex algorithms, while you do more important things like surf the intra-webs obviously searching for more funny cat videos or screaming goats).

Oh Andrew, when will you ever learn? Again you were falling for a "too early to announce but did it" situation. I can fully understand that because you are a communicative enthusiast and love what you do. Everbody here knows that you are sort of guru in your area!

Next time maybe you'll wait until everything REALLY IS already in place before you announce anything!

Andrew, as a developer myself, take all the time you need. Especially when you are making this plugin available for no cost. No one is entitled to demand other wise. A late fully-functioning product is better than a partially working and buggy, on-time product. Love your work, keep it up! Congrats on the new addition to the family, there's nothing like being a father.

It has to be something to with darkness in some way. His instagram post had the simple caption "Shade." while the title of this post is "All Nighter" not only referencing the hard work, but the night side of the planet.

Night... shade... darkness. All fits.

I think you may be right. Also, look at the color difference of the land in the shade, it's lit up in a different color. could be composited, but maybe it's a part of the plugin.

For anyone that is complaining about having to wait for some content and free tools and is questioning how hard it is to make a blog post or questioning Andrew's drive and passion...go and watch his keynote at AE World.

If you don't shed a tear in reaction to his closing words, then you will never understand why this site and company is something so special.

Just be patient, chill out, do some work while you wait. I am just as eager and excited as all you but I wouldn't for a second question why Andrew hasn't released this new plug-in yet or why there is a TINY bit of radio silence.

It will come, be grateful that he wants to give it away for free.

People need to stop making excuses for him for not communicating when he clearly said he would. It takes 30 seconds to send out a tweet. If he told JJ Abrams he would have something done by a certain time he would certainly update him if it were late. Everyone appreciates Andrew's hard work. He is amazing. That is no excuse to not to update the community that supports him. Yes it is free but most of us have also purchased every item he has sold to support him.

Jason, come on dude. Surely you understand the difference between working for a client/on a job, and donating your time to build something for free for your community... Far more people with a following do far less for their people. As a filmmaker, and as excited as I am about all the exciting products Andrew and his team has made over the years, I'm far more inspired to see the dude reach such heights- it gives all of us something to strive for, and it's evidence hard work pays off. So, politely, Andrew if you're reading this, keep making those monumental moves. Don't worry about your following, nobody's going anywhere- your site and product is so incredibly essential to so many we're all hooked for life. Personally I'm rooting for you to continue to get more incredible work in the field, that's the stuff I get really excited about.

He runs this site (tutorials AND makes products), worked on Star Wars, has his own short film to finish and his married with 4 kids (One of them newborn) and is now making this plug-in to give to us for free.

I want beyond curious about this plug-in too, but the guy deserves some slack.

Better it be amazing, than mediocre and on-time.

The fact that it takes more time doesn't bother me at all. It is a really great philosophy to bring out a product when it's ready and a lot of companies in software development and especially video games should definitely do the same. Take your time Andrew, we'll be here patiently waiting!

Scheduling and Time Mgmt. are some of the hardest things to get down for me as well. I always feel a great sense of accomplishment when I can say something will take ______ amount of time, and then it takes that long, and everything runs according to schedule. (of course I almost always have to increase the amount of time I think it will take by about 30% in order to achieve that).

I owe you a large part of my career as many others do as well, just do what you gotta do, we all appreciate quality over quantity.

Obviously I have to be grateful for any free products released and all the awesome tutorials that come out.. But why announce something for the day of when you know it isn't ready yet? Why not just announce it once it is ready to launch?

Yes this plugin is free, but all these deadlines not being met says a lot about the company in general which does offer paid products and services. So regardless of whether it is a free plugin or a premium one, you're hurting your own credibility by never being able to stick to your word. The simple solution: hold off on the excitement of sharing news of something until it is actually ready to go!

Andrew is a VFX Legend. Very less people like to share their knowledge with others. But I never saw anyone like Andrew, who freely shares Knowledge with others. Not only shares, he created different plugins for free. Many people have benefited from Andrew in their education and careers. This is the only website I open every day for last 8 years.

In addition, the software and products created by VideoCopilot are really good and cheap as compared to other companies. All the products are great and amazing. I love VicdeoCoPilot.net. Andrew! you are truly a legend.

I've never refreshed a page so many times before.

That said, there is not even a tiny bit of frustration. Just excitement. As I am absolutely grateful for everything that Andrew has done. I literally learned AE and started my career as an artist because of him.

Maybe it's a Planet Builder for Element! Put in a few parameters, number of moons, etc, and you get a planet you can fly around. They probably needed that on Force Awakens.

I know his plugin! This is a 3d planet generator. You can add testures (oceans, land), add an atmosphere, add rings (like Saturn), add aurora, add craters, etc ... We can therefore create the Earth, Jupiter, Mars in 5 minutes.

Andrew, I've just found an anomaly in AE. And the guys at AE are stumpt. This is so crazy NO ONE has come up with a fix. I asked them "What would Andrew Kramer do"?
There seems to be no way to define which frame, AE selects to use as the cover thumbnail to an AE project! Can you build a fix? You know in your spare time

hoping this is more than just a glow plugin.. although a glow plugin would be fine, im hoping it would be more of a lighting plugin.. you dont really have that much control over the standard AE lights and you had to juice everything out of it to produce a good result especially for Element.. really excited for this

Ahh Mr Kramer, your just a perfectionist like the rest of us. We totally appreciate the time and the effort you put into your releases so if its going to take a little bit more time for you to feel happy with it then that is perfect. As you said you do not want to release any old 'crappy plugin'. The fact you want to make sure it is just right shows your level of commitment to Video Copilot and its members. We also appreciate you have the new arrival of your baby so your main priorities are family (i'm in the same position myself with the new arrival of my daughter).

So take your time buddy, when you are truly happy with the plugin/tutorial we will be waiting here gleefully waiting to check it out.. Take care

Glow, Inverse square falloff? If so, glad I didn't pay the 50 bucks at AEScripts and just kept duplicating layers... if not, then I'll buy it sometime this week. Anyway, take your time, it's free, but for one second I thought you ment February 2022

You can also make IS falloff in one layer. Just use this chain: "Fast blur -> CC Composite -> Fast Blur ->...etc.".

Mike, so I just tried this, but it doesn't seem to give me the same results as duplicating the layers, I do a fast blur, 10px, then cc composite set to ad and duplicate the two, doubling the fast blur each time... what am I missing?

Had to uncheck rgb only box, but still, even in 32bpc, doesn't give me the exact same result. The duplicate layer method still gives a nicer glow / falloff. Thanks though.

That happens because you "overblur" each previous state of you layer. To prevent this you have to go backwards:

"Blur 128 ->CC Composite (Add) -> Blur 64 ->....->Blur 1 -> CC Composite (optional)"
This will end all stacks with a crisp copy of the original layer.

Also, if you have any masks on the layer, you have to make pre-comp before use CC composite on it.

The same was with Element 3D as i remember Just make sure that everything works fine. Anyway You could reveal a little bit of what we could expect from the new plugin? Is it similar to E3D?

That picture looks absolutely amazing, Hollywood level good. It always blows me away the things your products allow people to achieve in AE. Assuming that pic is related to the plugin, my money's on either some kind of advanced glow effects, or starfield generation. Leaning towards glow effects judging by the lightsaber pic earlier. Can't wait either way!
