Here is a fun experiment I created to simulate cool LCD Pixel effects using built-in plug-ins only! It uses the Camera Lens Blur effect along with a depth map to create realistic DOF.

Can I use this Pixel Screen experiment as an intro/outro for my youtube channel?
When I applied CC Ball Action onto an adjustment layer and put it above the pre-comp that holds everything(text, bg etc.) and turn this layer into 3D I saw DOF is working as usual with CC Ball Action as well. So do not need to use Camera Lens Blur FX. Hope someones finds this useful.

Can anyone help me figure out what I'm missing in looking at how this awesome project works?
There's a solid layer as the last layer in each the precomps that seems to be just a colored solid -- but turning it off blurs everything.
For instance, in the Video Copilot precomp (VC) turning off layer 10 blurs everything. Subsequently turning off the adjustment layer (which has a fast blur on it) brings everything back.
I'm just trying to figure out the voodoo that's connecting the adjustment layer to layer 10 -- what's that dark blue solid layer adding that sharpens everything up again?
Eternal gratitude to anyone who can clear it up for me. I'm enchanted with this project. Thanks!

I also have CS5, and was wandering as I build a similar effect based off of this example what is in the CC layer that I see on the project video? Cannot explore this project as it seems many cannot due to it being in CS6. I plan to upgrade first of the year, but was wandering if I could get an answer to the CC layer from someone .. Thanks in advance..

Simple yet stunningly beautiful. Maybe release a quick tutorial? I went through the project file and figured most things out but there are still some things I can't wrap my head around. Please consider doing a tutorial! :)

Hi,andrew
I have used another method to get the pixel screen.
I have used grid to get that pixelated screen i have just lower down the size bix really small and the set border to thin and the alpha matte with per comp of screen
And another thing i dose is i have added an additional layer of grey pixel to the composition and blend it something like add and then what i saw is it look more realistic as in real the pixel showing black color are look grey in camera and you could just try that may be my boring Advice would work great
By the way i just saw your keynote as an kid it has inspired me alot and the results you can see.

Great Work!
But I would be very grateful if someone would post the file for CS5. I have problems with the optic of the pixel effect. Or is the CC BALL Action effect is working slightly different in CS6?

Quick tip, Andrew:
Instead of a precomped Ramp Effect. Use a Solid with gradient fill (no need to pre-comp). It updates in realtime while you edit the gradient and you have more control over the falloff. Also works with compound blur. It's a lifesaver when trying to composite into a scene with DOF.

Awesome project and idea once again! I'm downloading the project now. One thing, you could just precompose all of the text with the "ball" effect on it and then make that precomp a 3d layer. Then DOF would work. Make it a 4K comp so you can zoom in close without losing detail.

Hi Andrew, very inspirational work. I'd like to find out from you, do you experiment with effects randomly (cc ball action) to create new concepts or are these effects programmed by adobe to be natively used in such concepts. It fascinates me how you are able to use an effect to create a totally new idea all together. Also, would it be possible to for example create this same concept with another effect altogether. Your reply will be very appreciated. Cheers.

Thanks for sharing these project files.
Its super helpful to be able to nose through and reverse engineer your workflow and learn from it. Thanks man. Pure gold.
Question: In the main comps your DOF Mask layers are set to Multiply and have an Inverse & Curves effects added and turned on.
As far as I can tell these don't effect the overall end result as the layer is just a map and turned off (I messed with all the settings in the layer and changed its Transfer mode but saw no change) I'm interested to know if its doing something I cant work out or just ignore it and these aren't the droids I'm looking for.
Cheers dude, I'm a geek for details. Keep up the good work Sir :)

A cool way to make the DOF procedural is to "link" the ramp points to the camera with the toComp expression, by adding 2 nulls in the master comp and then linking each ramp point to its corresponding null. Then set up the nulls on the same plane and there you go

Camera lens blur is to complex "filter effect" i think. For this simple DoF, the easiest way is just to use your ramp layer and motion blur on adjustment layer. Much simpler, but still looking good :) .

Great use of the ramp as a depth also!
