We finally made it out to film some great new footage. Unfortunately Sam had some trouble with his Razor earlier in the day. I told him nobody would notice. If only he had regenerative abilities...

Eddie,
Don't know how far you intend to upgrade, but there are older, much cheaper but still very good Canon XL1s' out there.
I found one on craigslist last night that was $1,200 and it had a bunch of goodies with it to boot.
If by "somthing better" you mean BETTER-better, then look at the Canon XHA1.
It's as good as the XLH1 but just doesn't have a bayonet mount lens.
Whatever you look at it should at least:
Be a 3 chip camera.
Have an audio IN jack.
Allow you manual control.
Be MiniDV.
And stay away from the ones that record directly do a little DVD.

I just used some knowledge and tricks from VideoCopilot to create a regeneration effect, I found myself to be so original "Yeah! i didnt just copy Kramer effect like all the others, i did something new and nobody will accuse me of ripping of VideoCopilot"
Damn, and it look better than what i've come up with.

oh yah Sandra,
With premiere CS2/CS3, they do have solved the problem with their
program called "adobe dynamic link"
You can directly import AE Composition file into premiere, which helps
ppl making their lives alot easier. I tested it, its working pretty good
but then it only works smooth if you have a nice computer. I dont prefer
using that method cuz my computer is around average kind. It takes a lonnng time for me to import large composition into premiere, plus when you view the AE comp video in the premiere timeline, its very laggy, which creates more difficulties for editting.
As for output compression...I think Andrew has a very good tutorial that explains all the core issues in it, you can browse thru the site. I forgot which one it is.
Basically, when you outputing ur film, 1st thing you may want to consider is how large is ur hard drive is? and what it is ur film for? If you dont mind having a very large file size in ur hard drive, I'd say output ur film into image sequence. TGA is definitly a nice choice. But if you dont have that much space in ur hard drive, I'd suggest you go with Quicktime "Animation". It turns out pretty much the same as it will with TGA. At least with human eyes, you cant really tell the differentce.
just my opinion

thank you so much for ur replay ..
i dunno about the copy/paste from finalcut to after effects .. i don't think it'll work but i'll try it anyways
but i have to ask .. the film is in HD format now if i rendered it with the "Animation" compressor won't it affect the quality ..?! or put it this way how bad it will be ?
since i mainly work between 3Ds Max and AE .. i alwyes either export in TGA sequance or in Quicktime MPEG-4 (for demos) ... this is my first time to work in live action movie ..
so i ask .. since TGA is probably the best image format for preserving Quality .. do u think it's a good idea to export a live action film into TGA sequence and then import in into AE ??!!
and about work between AE and premiere they solved this problem in the new CS3 .. i havn't tried it yet but from the reviews i read they are supposed to work together very smoothly now ..

thats a very nice question, I too, had same prob be4 with premiere.
after experiment many methods, I came up with 2 solutions:
1. After editing ur clips, export the whole sequence out in lossless format, for example, QuickTime "Animation". And then import it into AE to effects, then render it out again with "Animation" Compressor. With this method, you will need to render ur movie twice. But Quality of ur video still remains decent.
2. After i done editing my footage in premiere, I can simply copy all the clips and position data in the timeline and then paste into After Effects (only use this method if you didnt use any "premiere only" features to edit ur clips, or else, some of the effects you applied early in premiere may NOT be able to transfered to AE ). And then you can apply ur effects in AE. With this method, you will only need to render ur footage out in once. Not too sure if this will work with Final Cut too, but you can give it try.
The Last method i would use is, like many ppl will do----edit the part that you want to apply effects in AE, output it with QuickTime "Animation" compressor and then import it back to Final Cut.
so there, hope its helpful
if anyone has better suggestions, please shoot it

Looks like a cool little effect. I like the way the damage seems to have some depth, it doesn't look as though it is just an image composited on top. Is it an image? Or is it something more compelx with bevelling or similar? Clearly its a good sign that I can't tell how it was done!

Hi Andrew, I normally use proshow gold to show of photographs to clients, i saw the slideshow tut that you created very good. Is there a possibility if you could a tut for fly out slides using 3d space in the near future. The reason why, I need to show prospective clients something unique and different, and edgy.

SANDRA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i hope i can help you.
your best bet is to use the footage that you are going to import into FC. then in AE use the sequence length marker things to only work with the shot you want. then add all the effects you want.
then use the render queue to export the video as quicktime. if you watch the AE basic training located under tutorials for this website, there is a whole tutorial on how to use the render queue and not loose any quality.
i hope this helped

Andrew please take all the time you need; it's definitely worth the wait. In the meantime I think I'll re-watch one of the 59 amazing tutorials you've already given us. I'm really looking forward to #60. Thanks a lot!
Upload? FYI, I don't have a stockpile of tutorials waiting to be uploaded. Once I finish my research on the subject I will record the tutorial and then upload it.
When I post screen shots etc, it is the idea that I'm working on, not necessarily the tutorial. I hope this clears up any confusion.

OMG, I've always wanted to do this regenerative effect since I saw Interview With the Vampire and such, also on X-men, is this going to be tutorial number 60?
Can you please also teach us the part where Sam gets hurt/cut in the face? (not that I want him hurt). And maybe you can add a little blood coming out of his skin and the blood stayed after he's healed (now I sounded too obsessed), just a suggestion.....
thanks man really..

i think that you need to make a tutorial that teach how to make a shockwave,i'll give you example,in Transformers on the begining there is a robot that explodes the army base, and there is a nice shockwave.
It's will be awesome if someday you will make a shockwave tutroial

Hey Andrew - just wondering if the number of views for tutorials reflects the number of times the actual number of times it has been viewed (as in how many times people have clicked "Watch") or the number of times the page has been visited. Fro instance, I may go to that page 3 or 4 times (for whatever reason) but only actually watch it once. Hope that makes sense. Thanks.
Oh yeah, have you checked out FXhome Visionlab? It's really cheap and not the greatest to work with, but it has some pre-made particles and effects that are actually pretty cool. For instance, I noticed the gun trail for the DVD your working on. They have pre-made trails that actually look pretty good. Check it out. I pretty much export out the effect as a file and then use it in AE CS3 because it is a crappy program to work in.

I just want to say Thank you , to you and your entire crew
You dont know how much you are doing for us, God bless you and your family, your friends and company who all contribute to the work, all the guys that star in the tut's and stuff
Andrew you should see what some kids are doing with the stuff you teach and sell
I know , you yourself is also learning and you are getting better because you teach. I started out computer programming in Basic,Pascal etc in Dos all the while trying to become a programmer during that time I realise my GUI's were very good , but it wasnt' until recently that i realise that it's motion graphics and design that i should be doing
And now because of you I'm getting somewhere and I'm getting there fast , I'm working on website and I will post you the url for you to see some of the work with your help and other people esp videocopilot I've been able to do. Ok now it's just getting long so I'll end here. it's almost 5 in the morning here in London and I'm still glued to VCP
