Menu Design

So I’ve been working on this exciting new project that I’ll be talking about more later but I wanted to share some work I did on this recently. The idea for the menu was to make the table come under a dark spell once a button is pushed. This included adding wind and blowing the pages of the book open.

There were some interesting challenges and I can’t wait to show you all our behind the scenes work. Until then, check out this sample video and see if you can spot any Easter eggs…

An Easter egg is something interesting that is hidden. One, for example, is the Polaroid of Sam from the Demon Face Warp tutorial.

"Sams face on the photo. How much of this was done in After Effects, and how much in 3DS?"

I suspect that Sam's face is real, but I might be wrong you'll have to ask the Sam himself. ;)

February 9th, 2011 @ 2:04 pm
When I think menu, I think DVD, so this is obviously not formatted for that, so what type of menu is this for? An upright 16x9 interactive? Odd sized interactive web content?

Interesting, though. Cool effect. Like the set.
    TheNewMexican
    February 10th, 2011 @ 8:08 am
Ever used Adobe Encore? Normal DVD's can have animated menus. The background animation just keeps looping until one of the buttons is pushed. The button push can set off another animation (wind blow) before routing you to the main movie clip.
    Matt Gerard
    February 10th, 2011 @ 12:34 pm
I do DVD authoring and scripting every day, so I am very in tune with motion menus. I use DVDSP instead of Encore, though. I guess my question wasn't framed properly- The physical pixel size of the menu shown above isn't 4x3 or 16x9 for standard DVD frame size. So, my question is what is the distribution format of the final product? its not DVD, that's for sure. Unless this is just a partial frame movie, or an element used in the overall menu design.
    Paul
    February 10th, 2011 @ 5:21 pm
yea guys Andrew actually has a tutorial for that... i think we should start a saying for Andrew "There's a tutorial for that" kinda like the saying there's a app for that ...tutorial link http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/dvd_authoring/
    Eirik
    February 12th, 2011 @ 4:58 am
Not sure they understood the question Matt :P
    Kai
    February 13th, 2011 @ 7:21 pm
my guess would be that this was made the same size as the starting image for convenience...but you could use this idea in any sized menu
February 9th, 2011 @ 2:12 pm
I love that you put the Holy Grail in there too!
    Steve
    February 13th, 2011 @ 1:29 am
Well, I have a feeling if that is the Holy Grail then it would make sense for that to be the "Easter" egg.

You always, always, always make my day when you post. Very cool video. I love the look and feel of this one. Spotted Sam right away and recognized him from the demon face warp. Looks like Jonathan Edwards in the frame. And I'm probably just over-worked but the back picture on the table for some reason reminds me of the Hindenburg. Thanks for posting this. Let us know more about it as you're able. Hope your week is phenomenal. I used Action Essentials 2 and the Blue Easy setting from film magic pro yesterday to spice up a project and the result was nice. Thanks for teaching me and providing the tools as well - they're worth every penny. Oh, and thanks for the very seriously awesome picture of Sam you sent with my order. It was pinned between two DVD cases and I just found it yesterday. It's great! Thanks! (tell Sam he's got a fan on the east coast).

Easter eggs: 1. Lion Kings face on one of the photos.
2. The cup on the table is half full.
3. The grain on the wood is going the wrong way.
4. Andrews Grandpa portrait on the wall.
5. The obvious Round Egg on the stand.
6. Five photo pictures on the table there should be six.

At the risk of up-setting a load of Max uses, it would be great if the 3D was done in Blender. As it's open source and multi-platform, it is potentially relevant to more people.

Ain't bad either: http://bit.ly/gBd1uK

February 10th, 2011 @ 2:21 am
It is fantastic as always. There is parrot (or some kind of bird) reflecting on the ball. I guess a live one. If I were a bird I would surely fly away or at least move a bit in this storm. This could be one of the Easter eggs. Anyway your work is magic. Thanx.

February 10th, 2011 @ 4:34 am
This looks fantastic. I'm hoping a lot of it is AE effects driven like the pages of the book turning and the candle's flame flickering rather than a lot of 3D work. But as alway your stuff is amazing.
February 10th, 2011 @ 4:45 am
amazing andrew, please tut!
February 10th, 2011 @ 4:53 am
Hey great work Andrew. But i believe at that strong wind you could make the wax of the candle actually fall off, or do some weird stuff :)
Jason
February 10th, 2011 @ 5:25 am

February 10th, 2011 @ 5:32 am

February 10th, 2011 @ 5:52 am
The transition from the sphere to the outside needs more work

it looks great like always, but will the sphere work looks great.. It suddenly everything is blowing away..that's where you should do more work "to make it look from the sphere to the outside " like the spell gets out and everything goes to hell.. lol

also the color change is to strong at once..more gradual maybe..
Brent

It's very nice work!

February 10th, 2011 @ 10:52 am
Nicely done. I can see all of this being done in AE except for the book and flame. I would have green-screened the book and used a blow dryer on the pages for wind. I would have done a composite for the candle flame as well. Good use of color/image tone changes as well as particle fx to further enhance the "wind".
Grack
February 10th, 2011 @ 10:55 am
Not to mention...it looks like animating the pictures flying off the table the way you did, would have been a big pain. It's done very convincingly. ...could this be done in any way with pictures as particles?

I keep waiting with great anticipation for new tutorials that can enhance my video projects in various ways and as much as I love the humor and good will attitude of you Andrew, I feel I need to say the following.

What happened to the diversity? It's been ages since you showed something that could be more than a short gimmick or a DVD menu.

How about some more movie oriented projects and less sci fi?

Don't get me wrong, yall are doing a fantastic job and I mean no disrespect.

February 12th, 2011 @ 11:14 am
Let's guess how this is done:
I think most of the element were done in 3ds max. That include table, pictures, ball, candy and the text. But pictures and the text were rendered separately, and then all the elements were composed in After Effects. And for the page flip...Don't have any idea at all!!
Anyway, you are the best, love Video Copilot!!!!!

February 13th, 2011 @ 4:07 pm
Hi Andrew, once again.. Astounding enough for me to sit up late into the night hunting for similar CGI work in order to understand just HOW you did it...

Much of it seems self explanatory, obviously only to a certain extent.. Like the Globe and it's reflections. The energy similar to the dancing particles from your 'RedSmoke' experiment. The scene from Sam being struck by lightning and much more...

Then there's the book.. Obviously CGI (The pages when it's closed are too perfect for it to be real) yet it manages to spring open and animate in such an organic and realistic fashion that I'm almost CONVINCED you used magic instead of software!

The candle.. CGI base and wax... Real flame? I'm not sure, it really is that perfect that if you say it's CGI I'll probably faint from the adrenaline rush!

Now I know you're going to let us into some secrets, but I doubt we'll ever know the whole story.. Shame for me because the whole scene has aspects in it that I would like to learn.

Once again... Brilliant work, fantastic concept and some great 'touches'

Good work Andrew et all!
Easter Eggs;
*Someone waving a wand around "in the globe" at the start (mid/top left)...maybe a face there too briefly
*After wind, a face appears in globe on lower right side
*An upturned hand also appears briefly in centre of globe

There also seems to be a gold ring in the globe that isn't part of the candle holder..??

of course this could be just my imagination!!!!!!

cheers,Evan (i love a mystery!!)
February 14th, 2011 @ 2:55 am
Hi Andrew,
about easter eggs..

At the final frames you can see on the right side of the table that you jused motion tiles.

And of course what other poeple notice, the candle didnt blow out, what shut be wich that kind of wind.

At the end the effect work out really good,
really nice work. You got my respekt.

February 14th, 2011 @ 8:50 pm
This looks awesomely cool... however, to make it just a bit more realistic... the candle wax looks too fake somehow... The candle holder looks real but looks implanted into scene because the candle flickers are not reflecting off the metal. But that is a highly critical observation... I LOVE it.
Also, not sure where I should ask this but... if you have ever watched Rachael Ray's cooking show... the colors are so real and popping out of the television. Every color is soo saturated-like or something... How do they get that to look that way? Is it their camera or some post work or both? In other words... how can I get the same look... Also their frame rate looks cool. What rate is it?

Hey, you may have read this before but, really nice man...
how did you "simulate" the book pages like that, I mean, you use 3ds max right? are you thinkning about a tutorial on that? a high quality tutorial (like the ones wich you really know how to do) on encore would be of a great value, since its lacking on the web. i really think that this work, should have a full tutorial. Hey Andrew, really nice work, that I'm not even close to could build better, but ... the wind blowing seems a little rough, shouldn't the candle be killed by that, I mean - from a physical, logical perspective?

However, I love your very nice and structured work already after just a couple of tuts, spread more of your message, o wise master of VFX!

March 6th, 2011 @ 10:31 pm
I would recommend a texture for the specular map in the metallic objects. It isn't really that much work, but it helps a lot for the realism. Also one for the glass specularity. The rest looks hyper-realistic, congrats.
