Andrew, This is a great tutorial. I've been using AE for 12 years and this is the first time I've been exposed to motion tracking. I'm doing well with motion tracking but when I try to use the "pick whip" to track the mask, I get lost. Something about when you dbbl clicked precompface, another timeline appeared. I'm using CS4. I've been stuck on this for days. I've tried everything I can think of. While this is being moderated, do the moderators know the answer?

Hey Andrew,

First and foremost you are an excellent mentor and teacher of visual effects. Do you have plans to reshoot your tutorials being that most of us should be on CS6 and there are some new and different things that should be updated. For example you no longer need to hit ALT and double-click..now you just double click...thanks for all of your help!

Great tutorial but it just skips over tracking scale. In my video I have my actor moving toward the camera making the scream. As such, scale is enlarged as the actor moves forward. Does anyone know how to fix this and make the liquify and color correction effects "stick" to the face and enlarge in scale with this forward movement? It would be no fun to just COPY what Andrew has already done here, so we're trying to be creative. Ive tried pick whipping scale to scale (didnt work), scale to scale with expression *-1 (also didnt work) - Im sure someone wants to also be creative and try this (its being used in the movie Paranormal Activity 4) So lets get our heads together and figure this out so its not some industry secret.

You were actually pretty close with making the scale -1. In a sense that should work, but when the scale is 50, that will give you -150 for the counter scale, when what would actually counter it is 200. Try this:

(100/pick-whip scale)*100

So 100 divided by 50 is 2, and 2 times 100 is 200.

If you have some problem to stabilize , make your stabalized layer a 3d layer, and add a camera to the comp and parent it to the stabalized layer

Hello Andrew,

I have a shot that i stabilized with position, rotation AND scale. I've parented the position to the Anchor point, the rotation to the rotation *-1 and the anchor point to the position. All is left now is the scale. How would I go about that?

When reversing the tracking, pick whipping the values as shown, nothing seems to happen and they stay at 0. The text is red. Any ideas?

Andrew or someone HELP! After effects cs5.5 has the new warp stabilizer that automatically stabilize's the footage for you. This throws off the whole stabilize motion step in the tutorial. And simply ''tracking motion'' doesn't work. I cant get the distortion to stick in cs5.5. HELP!

Thanks for the reply Marc and i'll have to try your suggestion to see what results that yields. However, after some fiddling around i was able to figure this out on my own after all. So to all the new cs5.5 users having the same issue i had, listen up. Do a simple track on your subjects face. Make sure you track the position AND rotation. Apply the tracking data to a null object. Create an adjustment layer and apply your distortion effect. NOW, alt click on the adjustment layers position and pick whip it to your null objects position. This will write in an expression for you. Finally, on your adjustment layer, under your liquify effect, pick whip the ''distortion mesh offset'' to your null objects position as well. Thats it, no complicated precomposing or tracking and reverse tracking. I too had this same problem in cs5.5 but I found a solution: In the motion tracker settings there's a drop down menu called, "Tack Type". Click this and select, "Stabilize". It worked for me! I hope it works for you!

Fun to watch but one little question:
What is the difference between stabelising motion and the reverse stabelysing or just tracking the motion of his face...

If this sounds stupid i'm sorry :p I think I don't really know the difference between the two ;)

i have the same problem... i tried many times with my own footage and with the footage from the project files. and it just doesnt work for me. it doesnt stay on the face like in the tutorial and the footage is still all shaky, it doesnt stabalize like in the tutorial. >=@

Hi,

Is there a way to do the liquify-effect on an adjusment layer (or preferably serveral adjustment layers) and parrent those to a (or again several) null? (for one or another reason the mesh doesn't move when on an adjustment layer which is parented to a null)

I have a question. Please help.

When I change the opacity or any effect it only shows the result after I drop the mouse, at the point. It doesn't show the effect while I'm cycling trough.. to make myself an ideea. Also with the video, when i slide trough, to see what i get as result. It doesn't show me the video. While i drag the timeline. I hope someone understands what I mean.. please help.

Hello! The answer to your problem is that you don't have your live update button on. The Live update is right next to the "Draft 3d button on your timeline. It is located right above your files in the timeline. Hope I helped.

I always try to make your tutorials on my videos, so i can get better the idea experimenting with my own scales and resolutions...

But in my video, my "Demon" (In my video it`s a zombie, actually) moves from side to side, slowly, but he moves...

And when he moves the texture of the zombie`s face looks just weird...
