Clean Lighting with Element 3D V2

Here are a few experiments created in Element 3D V2 with simple lighting and Ambient Occlusion. In these examples I’m using the Ray Traced AO which is a bit slower but creates very nice results.

The other important setting I like to use is called “Lighting Influence” under the Physical Environment. This setting helps blend the shadow darkness with the environment (IBL), to create a nice Global Illumination look. You can also tint the Environment color to change the overall look and mood.

Some other Tips I Use:

  • Use one or two lights (too many lights can look busy)
  • Turn roughness of material down so that it has a matte white surface
  • For Ray Trace AO, turn the spread down to .85 to create more contrast
  • Turn down the adaptive blur blending to make AO tighter. (Blur Blend)
  • Switch between preview mode and final render to speed up Ray Trace performance while you work.

But then again, maybe I’m just trying to promote some of the awesome models inside the Motion Design 2 model pack!

Hi! i am wondering if element 3d can manage big 3d scene like stadium with baked animations in it and if it easy to change texture that are already in the obj file.
In fact the idea is making a big scene inside 3dsmax or any other 3d programs that may or may not contain animated sequences and bring everything inside element 3d in order to avoid mental ray or any other rendering engines which are time consumming in terms or rendering and do all the magic (or at least part of)inside element 3d like lights, reflections, changing textures and so on .

Just completed a 3:38 video for NBCNews online, which made extensive use of E3D V2. A twelve-month look-back on politics, each month was created as its own movie, then comped together as a whole. Within each month, only One Group on One Instance of Element V2 was used and, remarkably, each single group held as many as 40 major elements - most custom-built - are utilized. Aux Animation was heavily exploited in each of the 12 comps, as was Deform, Ray-Traced Shadows, and Physical Shaders. Due to a dearth of tutorials at this pint, I had to John-Wayne a lot of these features and as a result, there are a few minor flaws in the production I would not usually allow to go through, but overall, I think the result re3ally underscores the power of E32 version @. Bravo AK & Crew! Here's a link to the video on my YouTube page (the NBCNews online codec is awful). NBC has been known to auto-block the videos I do for them when I post them here, so apologies if it's gone. (you can always view it - albeit beat up - on NBCNews.com. Thanks for watching!

I'm not sure if this the appropriate place for this question but someone please help me. I have created a metro city with text in element 3d. I want to place keyed footage of a person on top of a building as the camera passes by them. What is happening is when I move the camera thru space the keyed greenscreen footage of the person on the buiulding moves as well. (PC, CS6, AE, E3D)
    donnell
hi, Jeurray. this is what works for me. After setting up your metro city, and you do all your camera zoom going past the building etc..you need to render out that comp. After rendering, bring that file you just rendered back into AE, then use the 3d tracker that comes with AE or if you have mocha bundled with AE use that as well. Select the top of the building or the place where you want to put your green screen person, and track that area. DEPENDS on which tracker type you use, you can create a null and paste the tracker info to the null. Then parent the null to your green screen. For the 3D tracker right click on the points where you want to put your green screen person and click create null, then parent your footage to that null. hope this helps ..If anyone know a better or faster way please chime in as well. good luck my friend

Real quick throwdown-
http://youtu.be/jBDIMaKJZkU

Having trouble 'connecting' text and plane elements to be flush. It seems like there is a space, even though in the UI I have them intersected purposely- when I put a spot light on them. I upped the AO but too much causes shadowing all the way around each extrusion? Hmm?

Rendered real quick in 8bit- and I'm running a 'minimal' card. Loving the plug-in guys thanks!!

Hey Guys i hope someone can help me.I want to bring a 3D model into real life footage,a parking car on a street, and take advantage of the new shadow function.Like shown in AK's Element V2 first look video with this big chopper. But i don't know how.I have tried taking a plane i see the shadow on it.But when i make it invisible to the camera so that it doesn't disturb the scene the shadows dissapear.I hope someone has an idea.

Thanks
He uses a similar idea in the 3D light casting tutorial (tutorial #93). He makes a 3d plane with a gray solid and orients the camera to line the solid up with the ground, and then has a point light illuminate a part of it. Then he uses the transfer mode "Classic Color Dodge" to have only the light show and not the plane. With a shadow, you could make the plane/solid white so that you can use Multiply (the opposite of screen) to hide the white, causing the black and grey shadows to overlay onto your scene. Hope this works for you.

Hi Andrew,
Forgive me for the confusion, but is Element 3D V2 a plugin that enhances 3d models that you have imported or can you create 3D models within AF without the use of 3D Max, Blender or any of the other 3D programs available. Thanks.
    Zack G.
    Hi TJ,
You can't create 3D objects, but you can extrude text and shape layers, manipulate them, and import 3d .obj's The UI is extremely responsive and you can get instant looks with lighting presets, BG's surface textures and so forth. It's invaluable .... :)
    darin
it is a 3D particle array plugin. models are imported, not created in the plugin. there are a few primitives, and you can scale them and deform them... but there is not the ability to model polygons. in V2, the bend deformer gives you a great deal more control in object design.
example of the benefits of Element:
i have a scene with a single building. it is comped into video footage. it explodes. shattered pieces of the building fall to the ground. if i were to render all of this in C4D on my current machine... it'll take me about 30-40 hours (because of shadows and high quality ambient occlusion). in Element, it takes about 10-15 minutes.

I am a bit slow - but when I add an object or extrude text and add a plane in Element and bring them over to After effect.... I can only see the object - the plane (floor) is gone... So how can I get them all together from Element to After Effect?
    sean
I'm just guessing, but I think you have a "Z" issue. Check your 3D locations of your other elements, solo them and change your camera views to locate them. You can also parent the locations to Nulls or other objects so thay all exist in the same 3D Space. Hope this helps
    Tyler
The default position of the plane is centered and lying flat with the surface facing up. At the angle you are staring at the non visible sliver of an egde. You will have to add and move your camera around or adjust the position/rotation of the plane in order to see it - keeping in mind that only one side is visible until you enable "draw backfaces."
    Kevin
Try turning on Draw Backfaces on the plane material.

    One more shot :)
If you say you're just starting with element, your problem could be even more basic than that. You might have the number of particles for the group set to "1" (Find it under "Group 1" -> "Particle Replicator" -> "1. Particle Count"). It's a default value. But as you're trying to display two objects, you should set that to "2" or more. Hope that helped.

    Koz
Neither am I..although I am using a little secret trick to get rid of 75% of any rogue aliasing :)
I to have some problems with Ray-traced AO on animated fast moving stuff,(like a car for example) and i have a good build with a GTX titan 12 cores cpu and loads of ram, and all the projects run lightning fast, so this is not hardware limitation related, but clearly sometimes the RTAO fails to calculate properly on movings surfaces and you will get flikering on the entire on the surface of objects.

another issue i ran into is wen i make animation keyframes on C4d and bring them inside element (ex: car rig dinamics baked to keyframes and then import the .c4d file) some times element fails to interpret some keyframes correctly (ex: weels some times spin correctly and some times they dont) im talking about a static keyframe behaving diferently each time i ram preview.

    did anywone experience this before?

In case YOU didnt know this, I fly the VC flag higher than anyone even to the point two years ago the University I worked for purchased the whole set of their products at my recommendation, even though I already owned it all. There isnt a product I havent purchased since I started following them in 2009. THAT said..if you were around when E3D first came out you will know the amount of tutorial videos that followed and the speed in which they came out. With version 2since the release almost two weeks ago, we have had still shots.

Im NOT saying they arent busy I KNOW they are busy. However they just released a massive piece of software to the world and bug fixes or not..Its time for them to show us the way they feel the software should be used, and show us what it can really do.

But thanks for the comment :0) In case YOU didnt know this, I fly the VC flag higher than anyone even to the point two years ago the University I worked for purchased the whole set of their products at my recommendation, even though I already owned it all. I have never posted in the comments, but I read a lot of them and use the video co-pilot software and tutorials often. I am very saddened by the entitlement of people now days. I have been working professionally as an avid editor and motion graphics artist in the television industry for over 25 years now. In my time buying software over the years, the only thing I would ever hope for would be some kind of documentation on how the software works (which is provided). No one gave me a tutorial when I bought my car, my house, my computer, my stove, my refrigerator... Sometimes in life people should learn to do things on their own. As the saying goes, "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". I never went to college, but my desire to learn is greater than many people I know who did. With all things in life, jump in and figure things out, nothing bad will ever happen if you fail. If you are such a big supporter of VC you would know what Andrew preaches in almost all his videos, "experiment" see what kind of cool things you can come up with. Do you think Andrew got a tutorial on every feature inside after effects, no of course not. He spent time experimenting with the different effects to see how they could be used in "non-standard" ways. The fact that many tutorials were available for E3D v1 has no bearing on the what should or should not be online for V2. People really need to get over it. A lot of what I hear on these comments are people saying things like, it's been (X) time since you posted any tutorials, or I love (X) model pack but when are you going to create (Y) pack. Then my favorite ones, "That was a great tutorial, but could you post one on how you did (X)? I understand griping about things that you paid for that may have an issue, but all the tutorials on this site are free, and very good. I'm done with my tirade, sorry.

I have also bought the upgrade collection including the models V2, the backlights and Pro Shaders 2. But I think there not enough ORGANIC Physicals Shaders in this last pack (not at all actually). And I screw up doing some organic phy-sha (sub scattering and so one).

I experiment a lot, and it's very impressive. But please Andrew, we need more and more E3Dv2 tuts examples.
Ideally, you should do several littles tuts (2-3 mn) on each new features of E3D (noise deformation, AO, casting shadows, phys-shad, ...).

I know you deserved long vacation ;)
So have nice holidays, all the team !
And come back with a lot of tuts please.
