Action Essentials HD: Coming Soon
March 9th, 2009

It has been a dangerous couple of months filming explosions and all sorts of action stock footage for the new Action Essentials 2 library. A release date will be set soon.

This collection is just FREAKING ridiculous! That's all there is to say for now.

UPDATE: To answer a few general questions...

  • Over 90% of elements are live action shots, like explosions and blood etc.
  • 100% NEW Footage and Tutorials; NOT an upgrade or anything like that.
  • Yes there is some high speed stuff; I'll explain more later.
  • The Box is 3D rendered and just meant to be cool.
  • No cameramen died.

You have no idea how excited I am right now, Kramer!

Currently scripting a half-hour zombie film, (complete with guns, gore, death and awesome) so I cannot wait for AEHD, it, in conjunction with "real" effects courtesy of indymogul's tutorials, will help propel my piece from "Average yet entertaining" to "Bloody Smashing".

Wow. I'm sooooooo excited. Can i just say something Andrew. Theres one thing i love more then the products you have.
Its the fact that over the years we have seen your progression through motion graphics. Its that, that inspires me most. You know when you start out and you great stuff you think is great and then you progress and look back and see how amateur it all looks compared to where you are now.

If you could make the flashes last more than 1 or 2 frames, it will be much better in a slow-motion scene.

Most of the muzzle Flashes from AME 1 were real they are just so fast you only see them for one frame. We did some double and triple-time stuff with this new product but muzzle flashes should only be 1 or 2 frames or they look odd. As far as randomizing, we include several shots from the same weapon to alternate as needed.

This time around we have a budget and over 90 percent Live Action footage.

I have to admit (don't take this the wrong way), the first Action Movie Essentials was a bit lacky, most of the rendered footages were mediocre.
The muzzle flashes for example, they were just still frames.

It would've made a lot more sense to animate them slowly across time and then use some kind of expression to display a random frame from that animation for every frame in the main comp.
then animate a visibility checkbox on and off to create bursts.

But of course, if the flashes were live footage my point is moot.

oh Andrew,

are these elements going to have variety when it comes to angles and perspectives?

I bought your first Action Essentials pack and it was great, and I use elements that I have bought from other providers. The only problem I have with them is the variety on which these elements are orientated to the camera, sometimes the explosions are angled on a flat trajectory, and head on, when the shots we film for our projects have to be rigidly planned to be shot to the elements we download.

Now I know that this suggestion is way out there, and that such attempts to conform to numerous possibilities and variations that make up anybody's shots would be a long and costly to you and your team that is putting all of this together. I just want to perhaps suggest, or throw out the idea of how you could maybe expand this package the video copilot team is putting together for your fans

Can't wait! I'll have start setting aside sheckles for this one. I've gone through all of the DVDs so far, and they're all awesome. Yep. Even the clouds.

(I actually do more still shot sky replacements than anything else at work, so the clouds really are cool)

2. And then, when the graphics kick in, the news pictures are distorted and tilted, before complete dissolve into the graphics.

I only want to debunk a myth: the explosions on Action Movie Essentials were not made filming real things blowing up, but instead they were made in 3D Studio Max and Afterburn.

Hey, i saw a PS tutorial the other day for making explosions of clouds pics. Haven't tried it yet, but i'd think a timelapse of some stormy clouds, can make for a fine representation of C4 blowing with Colorama?.

I understand about the danger. I once (way back in the day) hired a SFX company to blow up a tv. My model was behind a 3/4" piece of foam-core with a hole cut so she could reach through and press a remote control. The SFX guys said the air cannon, squibs and candy glass were perfectly safe. Luckily nobody was hurt. The chards went through everything. After the smoke cleared the SFX crew chief asked me if I wanted a second take. All I can say now is thank God for AE. I'll be buying this on day one.

Little slim on the details but I am glad to hear this is in the pipes. Hope you can give a rough date on when this is coming out so I can put some cash aside or budget it in for my workplace.

I really hope this means there is a Riot Gear 2 coming out. I think it was discussed sometime ago. I used Riot Gear the most out of any AK DVD I've ordered. Though Evolution is right up there with it. Evolution had better tutorials benefits.
