NEW TUTORIAL: 3D Crater Part 03

In this tutorial we will be using After Effects to composite 3D and 2D elements. We'll also be adding some grunge and smoke to our final composite.

Note: Project file will be coming soon

Andrew: I've been slammed at work the last 3 months and have missed a lot of the VC tuts and blog. Finally I'm back to viewing VC daily once again! Thanks for taking the time to share your vast knowledge of FX software! Your latest tuts are awesome!

Hey, I know you probably have already mentioned it, but who won the T-Shirt contest, and did you ever have any printed.

Great.
since all those 3d tutorials I started a little with 3d software too. watch my first real 3d modell here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcwbpmvhV8g
it's quite good for a first time :p I used 3d studio max for the modelling and animation, and after effects for the colorcorrections. I'm not a pro yet, but thanks Andrew, for the chance you're giving us.

Long time fan, im sure a lot of ur leachers would be fascinated to know how you actually film/capture those ink/smoke/fairy floss FX; I assume u have a sweet keyable setup, but we only see ur street and screen capture stuff, plus a tangent of humour up my alley, cept 4 the alien, ahem... mabe post some quick 3rd person footy of how it's how. Andrew ur a legend and thank you for helping me through university. Gime a bell if u need a floor sweeper

Hey Andrew (or anyone)

In one of these tuts, you used a Matte Shadow material on a plane to cast shadows from objects on to it (and appear to cast shadows on the background image). I find that only works with Scanline Renderer. Is there a similar method or material with Mental Ray? Thanks.

Time Freeze (Time Stop) Effect in Heroes Explained by Anthony Ocampo. (Filipino VFX Artist)

http://heroeswiki.com/Inside_Heroes#Visual_Effects

Boujou can be used as the tracking program. 3DS Max, Maya, C4D, etc. can be the 3D package. Green Rigs to hold actors, etc. See for yourself.

Andrew, wanna give it a go?!

Well, that's what you get for breaking the stingy and narrow-minded sketches of knowledge sharing... and instead of 3 minute long tutorials on how to draw a line in AE... he takes enough time of his tight agenda to teach us sophisticated techniques which normally would only be available for few at speciali$$$ed institutes and such places. Yeah, alright... I'm sure that for more than one he must be the "Val Valentino" of AFX... but who cares ? Apples are all the same.. it's how you make the pie what counts. Great job Mr. AK. and 1000 thanks.

I am very happy that I watched this tutorial as I learned about the 1.11. This has screwed me up in the past when I tried to add tracking data to my live action footage. Now I know why!
Thank you Andrew Kramer for all of your efforts to educate us and keep up interested in Video Effects.
Thank you everyone who has and continues to support Andrew. Without your interest in what he does, there would likely be no motivation to create new tutorials.
By the way, for all of you guys who ONLY watch the free tutorials, you are missing out. With "The Bullet" for instance, there are several tutorials that are much more concise and explained. He also is nice enough to create in depth tutorials for 3DStudio Max, After Effects, I think Blender and Maya as well. Project files included and example saves.
I am just putting this out there for those of you are expecting more of the same type tutorials as the free ones.
I thank you Andrew, I have learned so much from you and many of those who are associated with CC as well. Thanks!

1.11 = 10/9 is the inverse of 0.9 = 9/10

I learned so much from Andrew's tutorials. I accidentally made a time freeze using Boujou and Cinema 4D 9.6 and After Effects.

Thanks again, Andrew!

Ok,

but how to calculate the value for the cameraexpression inside AE? Is it always the value 1.11, or is there a formula for calculating the numbers for different Videoformats?
It doesn't mess it up exactly, there are just different ways of dealing with PAR. Depending if you are preparing for 3d rendering or for AE. It IS an in-depth concept that needs to be designed for your workflow, but it can be done.
illd
Kramer could beat Jay Leno with his jokes .

But a really bad joke is that boujou messes up the PAR!
Such an expensive Software and its interpreting the PAR wrong, cant believe it...

Last line should read "This stuff is time and energy you will never be able to get back."

Doubt you will post this so consider it feedback from someone that is not a teeny bopper and has cash to spend for your products however I have most of them 'cept for a couple or three...

Is the next tutorial going to also be about rocks?

Thanks for the tutorial but am I alone in thinking I would rather see tutorials showing techniques used to make commercials on TV. That is where the money is, not making my own little hole in the ground.

Some of the graphics I see on television are much more impressive than this and can be applied to many more ideas and areas of graphic display than a smoking hole.

To me, Video Copilot is regressing in spite of Mr. Kramer's effort. This is stuff is time and energy you will never be able to get back. What a shame!
