For Andrew:

How did you get intrested in VFX ? Was you looking to make a laser saber or what ? :p

There a are few short film I love like '405themovie' & 'Ryan vs. Dorkman 2'. Have you ever think about making something with the help of the VideoCopilot Team ?

If I offer you the job of your dreams in a Hollywood super production, what would it be ? Film Director ? VFX Director ? Both ?

Who is your favorite film director ?

How did you meet Sam ?

----

For Sam:

You look to be a very funny guy... Have you even think about making a "one man show" ?

Beside of VideoCopilot, where have you perform as actor ?

Who is your favorite actor ?

If I could offer you any role in any film, which one would it be ?

Tell us a short, amusing account of something that has happened to Andrew

Hi.

My question to you is: What advise/training resources would you give to a 13 year old with basically no budget wanting to get into advanced visual effects using Adobe After Effects?

Thanks.

I have some questions, but I guess they're more personal than anything...

1 - What movie genres do you personally like? My guess is epic action films (Indiana Jones...) and Sci-Fi, but I want the master to answer

2 - What actors/actresses do you like?

3 - What movie directors/special effects artists do you like/admire? Sorry for the lot of slashes

4 - What are the specs of your computer -or the one you use for the serious editting?

5 - What are the most interesting effects you've ever made?

6 - What effects have you always wanted to do but never got them quite alright?

7 - What is the one work you've done that you're most proud of?

8 - What is the hardest effect you've ever done?

9 - What would you say are the never-do's for a visual effects artist appart from time-travelling without a good plan first or jumping from the roof of a building (although Jackie Chan keeps doing that...)?

10 - What TV series do you like?

I think that's it. You answer these and I'll be happy Cya

Hey Andrew, I was just wondering if there was an easier way to imort footage into after effects rather than capture and saving using premire and then importing all the footage, cause that takes too long for me.

Thanks for all your help!

Sorry one more question. this one is more technical. I own a Panasonic DVC30 camera that I dont think is being produced anymore but I think is agreat camera for a person who not a skilled camera man but has enough manual control to produce quality standard def footage. Anyway, this camera does not shoot 24p. I was wondering at what point should you deinterlace footage? Should deinterlacing before I start editing the footage or should I be deinterlacing after and should it be prior to doing any effects ?

1.I am not sure if this would be considered a question or a request but, Have you considered developing a video copilot wiki? I see a few questions here that you have answered before. It might be easier for you people to search the wiki for questions that are repeatedly asked.

2. Everyone talks about color correction but I am not really sure what it really means. Is a color correction more about matching the actual color of the objects and environment shot on that day or is color correction more about achieving a particular style or look or is color corretion about enhancing the quality of the end product?

3.You and your team are very talented. You make some very complex effects seem so easy. I like to know what has been your hardest challenge when producing an effects shot, also when have you failed at achieving the shot and why do you think you failed at reaching the objective ?

4.How much risk is involved when you take on a project that you think you can do but really never done before and how do you come up wit ha reasonable charge that gives you enough room to figure out the solution?

Last question ( I have plenty and maybe way to many) How do you approach bidding and how much time do you put into developing your pitch?

Sorry if this was a bit much to read through I guess I have more questions about the business side of things and how you balance business ideas, clients and still stay fresh and creative.
.
Thanks for the quality products, your time, your accessibility, and sense of humor.

If you're going down a river and the wheels fell off your canoe, how many pieces of French Toast would it take to fill a dog house?

When you produce something like Designer Sound FX, do you hire someone to create what you want so you can market a product, or do you do this yourself?

Where do you get your trailer music for your promos?

Hey Andrew,

Curious as to how to do environmental and ray-lighting for scenes that have a digital light source that needs to be seen on a physically-recorded background. Is this possible in after effects or would something like Maya or Lightwave necessary?

Also, you should do a reflection tutorial that combines glass and other movie video that can to be diffused and bent through it

This another very important question:

How can one deal with 'Horrible Habits of Clients' if one decided to start out in this motion graphics field. And what to look out for in terms of Scams?

Not sure what's been said, so here are mine:

1. How did you get involved or get a job (I'm currently in Sixth Form)

Hi Andrew,

1) What do you see as the primary role for Physical Effects (live pyro, atmospherics etc.) now that VFX has advanced so far.

2) What are your guidelines for file-housekeeping, archiving projects etc.

3) What are your guidelines for time management and keeping mentally fresh during work on a project. You've just had a child and yet manage to release awesome products and tutorials without a break! What's your secret?

4) What are your most interesting "We'll fix that in post" stories? Was anything unachievable?

Many thanks,

When you would we able to change or add anything on AfterEffects, what would it be?
You know as for FCP I wish Apple did a change in the timeline where as you could easily move complete tracks to a level lower or higher. I am producing musicvideos and sometimes I am working with 15-20 layers. If accidently I want track 2 placed on track 10 then its not possible....OR I must have skipped something and it IS possible, if so, then anyone can let me know haha

Hey Andrew,
I read somewhere on your site that you are self taught from the age of 16. I can't say I am self taught because I've so much from VCP, but I have done a lot with AE and Photoshop on my own.

What does it take to do all this (VCP, filmmaking, the whole deal)?
You haven't had formal training in AE, but you must of done something?

Oh yeah, I am in high school and am looking for a budget camera. I am torn between the HV20 and the GL2.

Any suggestions within that price range?

Sam,
Great acting and superb job on the skin displacement one!
What is it like acting when you know that effects will be added later?
Do you visualize it in your head, because those facial expressions are perfect.

Thanks a ton VCP,

Hello
I have some questions, i don't know if it has already been asked or not, i didn't read the whole list. How did you get into the business. What age? And what movies or commercials have you worked on? Do you have a reel or anything we can see?
Oh, I assume that you are the man behind Video Copilot.net. Or is there a "silent" guy who doesn't really know wny of this stuff, but is stealing your profits? I hope not, you deserve to get rich from this, you are clearly very talented.

I'm interested in the overall work flow of Video Copilot and Final Image Inc. as a whole. Everyone's role, their duties/responsibilities, a quick look at workstations and equipment, what's next, etc.

I also just had a random thought that might be a great or terrible idea - would it be beneficial to have some sort of "Video Copilot Certification Test" for people to take on their creative skills and/or in AE? There could be different exam levels (beginner, apprentice, master). I know Adobe has certification tests, but this would help us gauge where we're at and it might be beneficial for you to know where we're at as well.... I don't know, it may be more work than it's worth... lol, maybe the idea was more work than it was worth.

Anyways - you guys rock!

Despite the cost of living, have you noticed how popular it remains?

And

Andrew: I second Ben Pohl's question, where do you get the music for your product demos. To me the audio makes the video. The music with the vocals behind it, really gives the product promo a big kick start! Where can we find that type of music with vocals?

Also: take a look at this 30 sec video on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxXHy3wAk3w

and tell me how they did the page turning but yet the primary page stays focused? I really need that effect in an upcoming project.

Thanks for taking the time to teach us and making it an exciting adventure at the same time.

Ok, really.
1. Does Video Copilot have an "office" or do you work from your home(s)?
1b. Will we ever see a tour of where you work?
2. What is the hardest/easiest parts of starting a motion graphics studio, and what is required to do so?
3. Can you hand out some tips on using the Pen tool?
4. Did you know Evolution works great for making t-shirts?
5. Will/When will Katie be the star of your tutorials? She's cuter than Sam. (Grrr! Child labor laws)
6. What is the point of Soundbooth? Can't I do anything I can do in soundbooth in Premiere or AE?
7. Do you have any old equipment I can take off your hands? :O
8. There is a lot of "Never before seen" footage in your reel. Where can we find your "other" works? Such as films, stories, art work etc.? What projects have you worked on?

Hey Andrew, first I would like to say thank you for your amazing tutorials and products. You are allowing me to learn After Effect, which I wouldn't have been able to do with out your help. My question is I would like to know what order your supposed to composite in. Are you supposed to edit together your whole film first, or export individual clips before you edit the film in another app. Thank you very much and keep up the great work!

You may make tutorials, to make intros to web pages and stop using flash. And can use After Effects, for all the animation types, these is my dream

Bearing in mind the size of the videos because is for web.

I think it is an area in which may begin to participate and would be the first, besides they bring much success.

I just got upgraded to CS3 at work and see some new filters, but my question concerns old filters as well.

I remember you saying in a tutorial, when using a filter try and figure out what else you can use it for. How have you gone about figuring that out? Do you see something in a movie and try and replicate it? Also, how do you figure out what a filter can do and how it works? Many times, i know what i m going for, but am not sure where to start filter wise.

Also, have you just lucked out with your actors being friends. How have you grabbed people to do tests with? I think i may have found an actor willing to help out, but many of them tend to be a bit "what's in it for me?" here in LA.

I'm sure it's probably too much to ask and might take up too much space, but is it possible for you guys to incorporate a Gallery into your website? Not so much for your stuff, which would be great to see, but mostly so all of the "Video Copiloteers" could post things they've done incorporating things learned here, at this site. It might be nice. Just a thought.

Also, I'm a supporter of the forums as well. That way, if someone asks a question on how to do something simple, you wouldn't have to waste a lot of time doing a tutorial on something most people already know, we can answer each other's questions.

Hi Guys,
'
maybe it is a stupid question, but when do you apply an effect to a layer and when do you choose to apply it to an adjustment layer.
in wich stage you choose to precompose a layer, or go on with the original.

what is the difference between the lenses in the camera settings.
are there still things left to cover in a tutorial?

stuppid questions maybe, but i wonder why.

Andrew you can produce a short movie (about 30 minutes) with a lot of special effects, put behind the scenes and some tutorials and sell it, I will be the first to buy. By the way I will buy the evolution and the VC special edition DVD very soon.

Jesse, What you did is cool. You asked "Why copy?" I can speak for myself. I can learn a lot by copying something. I try to keep that knowledge in my head for when I'm doing my own new work or client work.
Do you ever think that a lot of the people who use this site don't take away as much as they should. Like you'll make a tutorial that shows how to use an effect and people will post exact copies of what you did, then they come back and start asking how to do something else. This is what I made after I saw the skin displacement tutorial:
http://jessetoulafilms.com/EffectsPages/invisible.html
But all the posts people put up were the exact same circular bugs crawling up, maybe uner a different part of the body, but till the same exact effect.
Do you ever feel like your tutorials are stopping people from being more creative and figuring out how to make their effects on their own? Just a question I still love this site. Also, what do you think about all the people who call you god?

Andrew and Team,

I think Paul Del Vecchio had a question that might be a great place to start to answer many of the questions posted here. Paul asks â?????Why did you start videocopilot.net?â??? You are clearly an After Effects expert but why take the time to share? I hope this is profitable. Clearly you put a ton of work into it. Iâ??????m happy to purchase all your products in trade for the continuous flow of valuable free information. Anyway, I think it you start at the why it might answer questions regarding your background as well as where you hope to take videocopilot.net.

Good luck and thanks for offering this open question forum.

Hi. First a thank you for all your great work, you are obviously a professional, and I appriciate you sharing your secrets with all of us at the low prices you do.

Now, i have read all the post, and only have one question left; Do you find it troubleing that we play around with AE in a world like this? I mean; the dollar is collapsing, our governments are acting like spoiled kids, and famine is a problem for a large part of our planets population, the top 500 people in the world control 99% of the wealth. Am i the only one with moral issues on this playing around with graphical effects while so many people have it worse, i mean, commercials help noone but the seller of the given product(and the artist). I know you have your heart in the right place, it easy to see with the quality and pricing on your products, i just came to think about it when going through the other posts. Please just disregard it if it's too non-AE related. Otherwise, would love a look into the depths of your hearts.

Tutorial request for the future: "Faking the UFO visitation", as we all know we'll be seeing alot of those soon enough

Sorry to be such a hypocrate.

This may be a lame question, but what does your average week look like?

I appreciate your sarcasm, and your obvious JOY for what you do makes your tutorials not only helpful, but also entertaining. However, I know there is a lot of WORK that goes into VideoCopilot.

So, can you give us a rundown of what consumes your time? (i.e. creating tutorials, team meetings, creating FX for films, time with family, managing the website, etc.)

Thanks!

Here's a couple:

When working for a client that has a vision that you know isn't right for what they want, but you have a good solid idea that would probably work better, how do steer them toward your vision?

Are you caught up at all in the JJ Abrams / Cloverfield viral marketing/hype? Although i know your patiently waiting for the new Indy film.

Hows the wife an baby?

When starting out and trying to get noticed, is it ok to have fake commercials for real products in your demo reel?

Are you looking forward to Christmas this year? I know I am, I'll be grabbing some VCP Products and getting a new 40" Samsung HDTV so I view all my work in its HD glory.

For Sam, Is there a new way you would like to meet your demise is any upcoming tutorials?

Thanks for all the hard work Andrew and crew.

1. Are there features of After Effects that you don't like? What would you change?

2. While there are quite a few people who admire those at Videocopilot, is there anyone in the FX world that you look up to?

3. Where and in what form do you see the big developments in digital film making happening in the next few years?

Hi again,

do you remember the hidden James Bond car in Die Another Day.

With displacement map you can hide it and with wave warpe you can animate it.

I tested something but it seem to miss something. Like you say very well : "And now here's the tricky part"

Does that inspire something to you ?

What do you do after the footage is landed on you hard disc drive? I mean organizing the footage, editing and the whole post-production process. Do you edit/cut your movie first and then apply VFX or do you load your footage in AE first and render it out for use in an editing software? Which video editing software do you use or do you edit in AE? How do you work on the audio track of your films? What (in the purpose of audio) do you do before and after editing? Some tips on your workflow would be nice.

Can you show us the place where you record your tutorials? (I don't mean the footage for a tutorial, I mean the place where you spend hours talking to yourself.)

How do you come up with the ideas for the tutorials and how do you figure out how to achieve a specific effect in AE? Do you just play around 'till you get the effect or is there someone or something (books, websites) who tells you what to do?

Have you done short films or feature films and if yes, how can we watch them?

Will you expand your free presets section? (The presets that are available now saved my life.)

Will there ever be a 3ds Max Basic Training section?

I've read that Sam plays guitar. You are playing drums, guitar and keyboard. Can you both play something for your fans?

How old are you and Sam?

Have you or Sam worked on a big project/for a big studio that is internationally known?

How can I use a PlayStation 3 in a render farm?

How is it to be Andrew Kramer?

Not particularly exciting but the ones I understand (only a few despite years of using) are really useful and save me lots of messing around.

I too am interested in the thought process behind finding somewhere to shoot the test footage.

Do you guys get together and go "we could shoot that there", do you do some research, or do you drive around all day until you find a good place to set up?

Personally I like the idea of you driving around, and Sam yelling "Hey Andrew, see that truck? I'd like to have bugs crawling around in my face in front of that truck!"

Also, does Sam ever ask for his motivation?

Good luck answering all the questions.

Hello Andrew,

Long time fan and actually have used a lot of techniques you have shown in your tutorials on some of my videos. Currently I'm working with the University of Iowa's Entrepreneurship program to boost enrollment and awareness. Anyways we have a generic handicam currently and are petitioning for a nice canon xh-a1. Ok onto my question. If you were to be in my position, somebody who has a general understanding of after effects and can usually figure things out on their own, how would you really spice up a video that mostly deals with face to face interviews, basic color corrections and blemish removals are given but as far as text, backgrounds and overall view of the video. I created a mock up tonite after about 100 hours of editting and filming then showed it to one of the professors of the program and he said it needed more but less meaning shorten it down and make it more involved. So I guess that is my question. If people are on camera for 30 seconds (after intense editing) what is a good way to keep the viewer emotionally involved?

BTW keep up the great work, I have no idea where I would be without videocopilot.com .

Thanks for everything!

Hey Guys - love your work.

1. What is the proper (or best) output filetype (and settings) if you shot on DV (24P - DVX100) and are planning some sort of theatrical release?
a) Is something like Red Giant's Instant HD worth using?

2. Is converting to film still a must, or are most theatres moving to digital projection nowadays?

P.S. Someone asked before about how you did the shot in your demo reel of getting struck by a car while driving in your car. PLEASE do a tutorial on this, as this is actually part of a scene I have in mind for a future production. Thanks in advance.

Cool thread Andrew, here goes:

1) How much time a day do you spend working with VC stuff? Meaning, do you pretty much work VideoCopilot as your premiere business, not just the site here, but for other ventures that you use the name for, such as brand name clients. I know you just started you family with your daughter recently born, but wondering if this plays into the dynamic of your work time now or not.

2) What was your first paid gig? Not just something you did for a friend, as we all have done that, but actual hire outside of your personal friendships.

3) Where do you see After Effects going, or where should it go in the next 3, 5, 10 years maybe as far as what it can offer and expand on? Where or what can we expect to need to learn new things in the effects/motion graphics industry in that time frame?

4) What kind of inspiration did you get as a kid to do this kind of stuff? Did you start learning very young, not even care of this stuff, or something along those lines. Where do you get your inspiration now when beginning a project, free or paid gig?

Thanks AK, should be a cool vid to check out.

Okay.

I'm learning: After Effects, Premiere, Encore, Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator,Ultra, OnLocation, SoundBooth, ProAnimator, PlugIns of all sorts, and literally dozens of other programs. Some of these, thanks to your help and a few others, I'm getting decent at using....even better at others.

Now, for the question:
What am I gonna do with this skill? Where is this going? How does one benefit from all this?

Oops, more than one question. Anyway, these are real questions.
Thanks,

Hi andrew!
Look, i know there is the evolution DVD, and probably we would learn how to do that buying this.. but, i saw an tutorial about the "evolution" effect, that uses the "write-on" effect.. i just want to know if there is another way.. how YOU do this??? I know, you can say: buy the DVD. But, i just want to know your way to do.. do you use write on effect???
ok that was my first question, now i have another one, and i think that is more important for all people that come to your site. Can you do a little tutorial about animation? like.. how many frames to use, how to acelerate the moviment and all those things.. im asking it, cause i have just bought the "animators survivor kit" book, and im learning yet.. i love 3D animation, and i know something about maya, but i thing your work is amazing!!! and i would love to learn some more with you! Thanks from Brazil!! (sorry for english)

Hello Andrew and Sam!

I am in the middle of college now for a degree in Communication Sciences; i want to know what is the best approach at starting a career, I've been thinking about maybe starting a corporate video producing company; yet all I have is a Canon Elura 100, I want to take advantage of it at its max so what are your tips for when you just have a camera and want to get into the industry, I know I can't start working for big companies or large clients but maybe you know, make a video for the local elementary school or something?...

So my other question is can we please see some of your work in short films and/or like your early stuff? I'd really like to see some of your short movies since you say your true passion is film making

My third question is I just want to say to Sam Loya he's a great actor! I'm sorry that he didn't get the part for the hunchback

To expand on Kyle Troxell's question. When watching movies or TV shows do you find yourself getting distracted from the show and find yourself asking questions like "how did they do that and how could I do it?" or "hey that looked really cool I'll have to try something like that" and you keep thinking about it so much that you almost have to back and watch it again just so you can see all the stuff you missed?

Hello Andrew and Sam,

Wow, its great to see you guys have started Q&A. Once again it shows you guys care about the community and closed the gaps.

My questions:

For Andrew:

1) I'm in bit of dilemma, I've finished graduating from University in 3D computer animations where my main interest was to go into 'Character animation' but it's not the most easily learn't field. Although, nothing is quite easist but making realistic animation or cartoon animation requires MASSIVE amount of time.

I always looked at After effects a means of motion abstract illustration art. Could I make living out of doing titling or promo work for clients as a full-time thing?

Sorry for the brain twister. hehe! But really do need your advice.

2) What advice would you have for students who wants to break into this industry?

3) What is your method of work-flow, for personal project and client projects.

4) What kind of things should you include on the demo reel (motion GFX reel)?

For Sam:

How many takes before the rap!?

Sam I like your outtake acting in the magic glass window tutorial. I hope you've recoverd from patchy sad life. hehe!

Question: How is Andrew's directing skills? Does he let you perform with freedom?

Technical Question:

I'm interested to know how can somebody archive similar effect used on 'Nightcrawler' in X-men 2 - The Bamf effect. Many thanks!

.

Thank you soo much for your kind help in tutorials. I hope Adobe sends you shed loads of free softwares

Thank you all at Videocopilot.net Keep doing it guys!

Hey Andrew,

1.) Do you feel that VCP is something that will lead to something bigger, or do you want to continue doing VCP (or, third option, grow VCP into something larger?)

2.) When you film a shot, how close to the finished product is the image in your mind? As you've grown in the industry, has the gap gotten smaller?

Thanks! You're the best!

Can you give us a more detailed production chart and time frame for one of your projects?

Take the Action Essentials Promo... did you storyboard? If so... examples? How long did the filming take? Who handled the filming/editing? Lessons learned during the process and/or ways you would have done it differently in the future?

Hey Andrew, I have couple for ya....when you're filming your own projects that you know will need VFX what is your approach to preparing to capture the footage? ...as in , discussions with everyone involved, pre-vis, and when filming how do you know when you have usable footage that be what you need to complete what your project. ...just curious, everyone works a bit different and would be cool to see your views.

Another question,...since you're here helping us out, ..who out there in the film and visual effects world inspires you or you look toward for new ideas? ....from directors, VFX artists, etc.

Appreciate all your hard work....I plan on picking up Evolution but I may have to wait till Jan....my daughter wants some expensive gifts this christmas!! ...brace yourself for when your's is older!!

Enjoy your holidays,
Tony

Hey Andrew (& Sam)!

Just wondering how you guys would rate your JVC HD 200...personally I think it's amazing, but do you know of a better camera than it?

Do you recommend cardioid or super cardioid mics?

When is Riot Gear 2 due? XD

Thanks for any of the answers.

Not sure if this question is too technical... but: When you are working with an AE camera and 3D layers, how do you know which lens is the best choice. Do you primarily choose one preset over the others?

Andrew can we ask more than one question? Or just one question per person? Curious, you can delete this comment if you want.

Have you ever been outside America? If so, where?

Do you have another project coming soon?

What Sam Loya does for living? he looks like a "Back to the future" fan... or "The terminator" fan somehow....
