NEW FEATURE REQUEST.

Please add "Advance" Section of individual material to the entire OBJECT Setting and Group Setting, so that I can toggle "Visible to Camera", "AO mode" and other options for all the items inside a single object or a group.

Reason: I have imported my c4d phone model into element 3D. Now I want the phone cover frame, camera module and screen to be ignored from AO or sometimes I want my entire phone model to be "Invisible To AO/Glow", so then how can I do it fast? I have to find each item, click on it, scroll and toggle that option. That's a lot of work. It would be super fast if get those "Advance" material options in Object/Group settings.

I've error with my new GTX 1070... all is good, but when i use the shadow with ray traced, i've a crash... but not on an other pc with the same config, and a GTX 650...
i've disabled all shadow on Element3d to work, and all is good, when i want to render, i must render on the gtx 650 only... why ? need a update... all other cuda render in AE or Mocha is good, cinema4d is good, only Element 3D and only with shadow enable and ray traced option... someone have the same problem ?

Please could you tell me why Element 3D doesn't support Intel Graphics cards? i am sure there is an answer below but to be fair life it too short to be scrolling through loads of messages asking you to look at their videos (which by the way, some are pretty cool)... i look forward to your reply soon happy holidays VCP

Hello I have a problem with ELEMENT 3D, when I do I enable the Raytrace option in AMBIENT OCCLUSION after effects crashes with error (element has encountered an unrecoverable error). I've already ADDED my gpu (980Ti) in the list of supported GPU, but the problem persists. I have tried various versions of after effects and I have updated all of the GPU drivers, I have also tried to use different version of the driver, without success.

Can you help me please?

Hi everybod,
I have a license for Element 3d v2. Since I installed on my new workstation the element 3d plugin, I have never managed to make it work. I can just run the 1.6 version. My only fear is that element 2.2.2 or 2.2.0 are not compatible with my graphics card Nvidia K2200 Quadro.
I wrote the assistance Video Copilot but for now I have not received any suggestion. Plus I installed on my laptotp the same version of Windows 10 and on that laptop element v 2.2.2 works correctly.
If anyone had any suggestions, it would be really appreciated.

Hi Andrew,

Really love this plugin - it's an essential part of our workflow and is something we use more than any other plugin / 3D application.

Just a suggestion for the next version - would it be possible to integrate a timeline into the viewport, so that OBJ animated sequences may be viewed within the element scene setup, instead of having to either offset the objects frames or return to the composition view to preview the animation?

Keep up the amazing work and all the best for NAB later this week.

Hey VC team,
it will be really cool and a very big feature if we get for the next E3D update the possibility to do some respectively offset frame parameter in replicator menu for backed animation, in different axes (y,x,z) linear, radial.. in the style of C4D MoGraph Spline Effect.

Hi, We are looking to buy this how ever my pc has 1xGTX 750TI (primary Card) and 2x GTX Titan X, I have done a test with this and it only seems to use my 750ti and not the 2 titan's, can you tell me if multi GPU support will be added?

The main reason i ask is i only have 2GB ram with the 750TI but 12GB on each titan

I am a bit confused. In order to operate the jet strike, aerial, and metropolitan packs is element v2.2 a requirement or recommended? I'm losing something in translation. I am currently working on a project with a limited budget. Any way i could save some money would be great. Also any help would be greatly appreciated. THank you!

For those taking pops on here at Andrew and VC, I'm willing to bet if an opportunity like this came your way you would all up and leave what you were doing and give 100% even more. As a family man also, I can understand the commit and constraints working in this line of work can cause. Didn't JJ just quote that he didn't want to do the second film partly because he didn't want his family to hate him.

Nothing last forever and I wish them all the best. If anything I'm so thankful for what knowledge I've received from these guys.

If I got a job working on something like this, I would need to give all my energy after all isn't this what we are all working towards in our own ways! He's worked hard, got talent and to be honest, for those people having a moan here, I wouldn't think twice about dedicating my energy somewhere else as opposed to an audience as fickle as some of these comments I'm reading.

Actually Steffen it IS in fact 2.2.1 open up element and in the interface see where it says update near the top right hand corner? click the link....it takes you to the update page dated August 20th. I'd post you a picture but this site wont allow.

I just had an issue with Element and went to attach my system info to the email to support. While in Element getting the system info I noticed there is an update to Version 2.2.1. This was released back on August the 20th Silently it seems..... This silence is becoming old.

Huge fan and thank you for your amazing products.
I'm having trouble rendering some element stuff where element V2 renders jumpy frames or previously used masks that have since been removed.
Cleared caches it still does it?
Extremely unproductive if I have to re-render a 2hour render because of a single frame!

For long render times, it can be worth it render as an image sequence just in case of bad frames.

I think the reason was let slip by Ryan on Film Riot the other week. Seems we've finally lost Andrew to Hollywood Ryan said Andrew had to fit in finishing Intercept around his full time job at Bad Robot. This explains why the tutorials and site updates have been so few and far between, mostly consisting of overviews of the new versions of Element 3d which are coded I presume by the people who get the jobs advertised on the site. Congratulations in order for Andrew in that case and thanks for all the unparalleled help you've given the motion graphics community over the last 15 years or so. Hope you find time to keep the site's quality up. A quick hello would be a good start!

Macs are crap anyway, so going back to a Windows PC is the only option nowadays. Most professionals have gone back to PC long ago due to Apples new policy to screw all professional graphic and design artists.

So, what are you waiting for - sell your overpriced piece of hardware crap and get yourself a nice PC.

I need a help please. If I use replicator shape "Plane" e.g. 200 particle count and turn on "shadows-shadow maping" I cannot set up parallel lights correctly because shadows are out of plane? How can I do it right? Only in ray-traced mode all shadows are displayed correctly.

Have you tried to increase the shadow size?:
Render settings > Shadows > Shadow maps > Parallel light > Shadow size.

Hello Andrew. How have you been!?
I have a question. Can we have a simple "Sticker effect" inside Element 2?.
I mean, a have a scene with a table, and I just want to have plane over the table, with a PNG texture, with alpha channel.

The only thing that seems to working, is when I use the "alpha threshold" option.
But that give me jagged border to my sticker...like a 1 bit alpha. GIF style.
I tried the new "matte alpha" option...but it only cuts hole with the shape of the plane, over my scene.
I even tried using 2 element 3d plugins unified..but with no luck.

So, Am I missing something?
Or is this a limitation of the plugin.

Marcos,

There are many ways to do this, the first I would use would create a 3D NULL on your table with Element. Turn your sticker into a 3D layer and copy and paste the position of the null to your sticker then parent sticker to the null. That way IF you want to move the null, the sticker will follow. You could also past the sticker in its own comp with a texture of the table underneath as another layer, Then use that comp as a texture map for the table.... There is always more than one way to skin a rabbit and I'm sure other fans will give you other ways to achieve the look you need.

Make your table scene then 3D Camera track it and paste a 3d Null to the table track and replace it with your logo, gis, whatever...

The thing is, I tried those.
The first thing I did was having the sticker in the right 3d position "outside" element.
That works...If you dont have stuff above it in the shot... (i have) and if you have any shadow from models from inside element casting on top (also, I have).

Now, Christian, the workaround you mentioned of having the sticker as a texture of the table, is valid. But then again, is not a separated object with an alpha texture on it (witch is what I would like to have).
I ended up using the alpha threshold" with its jagged border.
I wasn't perfect...but it was okish.


Another possible workaround ( I just found out by chance) is having 2 copies of element in 2 different layers.
and in the top one, having just the sticker in a plane, using the matte alpha option.
It will cut a hole in the fist element layer (with smooth alpha borders) and we will see the bottom element layer...and them both will composite ok.

But I wish this could be accomplished with just one element layer.

Why not use a custom shape that has the same shape (minus a few pixels) as the sticker texture and then apply your texture to the extrusion from this shape?

klaus brandenburg, That could help, if you have a well defined shape (let's say, a book).But if you have a spray stain as a sticker (with semi-transparent borders) yo cannot do it.
So my point is not actually find a workaround to this issue...but to know if there something I missed...and you can actually have pngs with alpha channel applied to a plane (and see other 3d-element geometry through it...or if we cannot do that...and we need to wait for the next update.

Some of the suggestions above I wouldn't exactly call them a "workaround". They are all respectable suggestions to the "first" obstacle you came across and asked for help with. Once it was explained the ways you could get the "sticker effect" to stick to the table, you then explained, there were other 3D elements on the table which were obscuring. This wasn?t mentioned before.
Then when another member gave another example of how to overcome the challenge with a custom shape mask and add a custom texture, you then mention the PNG has spray paint transparency?..again, good information to know at the beginning of your reach out as this is a challenge in itself. But I?m sure not impossible to work out.
I?I know you already know, so I want you to understand so you don?t think I?m trying to insult you, there is no such thing as a ?one button fix? for anything. Even the simple task of extruding text, takes a single click to extrude, but you THEN must tell element how many copies you want, add the bevel, a material, lights, mood etc and as simple as that task is?.its not a one button fix. That?s what makes this all fun for some, and allows others to earn a living, so I guess a ?sticker effect? such as you mention is wrapped more around Alpha channel adjustments rather than a single button one click effect.
There are Tutorials to help with transparency in E3D for fire, smoke, particles etc and using another instance of Element to create a world position mask. I?m sure if the good people who visit this site would have known ALL the details to start off with, we could have been more accurate in sending you in the right direction.
In the meantime, I think if you look up the following VC releases, you should find the help you need and adjust it to your needs. Good luck with your project.

Of course I'm taking in consideration every you guys told me.
And maybe "workaround" wasn't the best world to use.

so, bottom line, I think everything you and the other guys says works, and helps.
And please believe me, I don't want a one button fix.

I'm just suggesting that would be nice to have an texture with alpha channel, that you can apply to a plane, just like you have in any 3d software.

But then again, maybe there's a limitation for that.

Would that be possible if you could add a "box" kind of reflection map in the next update ? Spherical and mirror surface are already really usefull but in box kind of geometries both dont work pretty well.I believe lots of people would appreciate it.Best regards Andrew and VCP tem! Love you all!

Parth, Did you use another piece of music that is more well known, OR footage from a well known film along WITH DSFX? This is likely the issue, NOT DSFX. One of Youtubes algorithms detects commercial music or footage to protect the artists and throws up the copyright notice.

Hey Parth, if you are 100% certain that there is no other copyright material on your video you can dispute it. VCP's Pro scores (I know you said designer SFX, but just letting you know it's not uncommon) has been used by many other people, and some have (quite immorally) claimed the copyright as their own.

As Mr.Wayne (nice name!!! :-0 ) said that some people claim others work as their own and get the rights, that is what happened with me.
My video featured me and my friends with some powers and all that, but it still gave me a notice.
Then i found a website where we can paste the link and inform what is wrong (that website is a partner of youtube) and then within 24-48 hours the problem will be resolved. It actually did!!!

Looks quite good. I noticed you used a mask to hide the entrance. Just what I was thinking to do. But watching the tutorial for 2.2 I get the sense that AK did not use a mask. Somehow, he used an alpha matte from within E3D to mask out the entrance. Quite the challenge to figure out! The man definitely has some tricks up his sleeve.

Steven J.-Yes, couldn't figure out how he masked it. The first clue if you look at my composition is that I have the background image above the E3D layer where as AK has it below. So there is definitely some trick he pulled off.

Darren-You are correct..need to adjust the perspective a bit. My main goal in creating the scene was to figure out all the Motion Design 2 parts AK used. Still left a few out that AK used that you don't ever see in the animation.

Just updated AFX to CC2015 and get lot sofg errors when using Element 3D, latest version. Will there be an update soon?

Example error: "After Effects error: effect cannot use ???check out/in parameter??? callback when called with ???unknown??? command.

did you find the solution for the error you got 2 months ago on 3D Element for AE from Videocopilot ??

After effects error: effect cannot use check out/in parameter callback when called with unknow command. ( 25 :: 83 )

Any one having problems viewing a image in the Custom Layer, Texture channel UI.
I can load a png/jpeg and see it. As soon as I load from the custom channel it's blank but does pop in when I come out of scene set up..
I'm using AFX 2015 and have element 3d v2.2

Yes, Jason - having the same exact problem - no preview of the texture in the E3D UI.
Also E3D V2.2 doesn't play nicely with the new 2015 Adobe Media Encoder: error messages but it does render.

Love the plug in. but...
when I load my obj that I created in blender it shows materials but with nothing on it. no texture image, defuse, no color, no normals,.
how do we load that right? or how do I save my file in bleder the righ way so Element will see all materials when I import them?

I expect that this feature won't be included inside Element till at least version 3. Until then I'd recommend just learning a 3D modeling software such as Maya or Cinema 4D.

Hi,

Can e3d be dynamically linked in a premiere composition? I did not have too many issues in CC 2014, but am getting non stop crashes with CC 2015. I did not see anything in the documentation about dynamic linking.

Can anyone confirm?

I wish it was possible to also import 3d camera and lights from c4d, I know that it is possible to import lights,camera,null and solid , but because of the camera setting in aftereffects the focus point is different, I think that importing camera and lights with element 3d really helps.Makes the work flow even better.

Hey i was wandering if you could add a project file option within element 3d UI and so when we get tired of making scene we can save as project file the whole scene and continue later still editable you know it's different from saving group folder as .e3d

Same problem, turns out, the patch is not updating the plug in. Still says version 2.0.7 in "about". Ran patch twice, rebooted, the works. Tried with existing and new AE projects. Mac, AE CC 2014

Hi everybody,
Can anyone send me a link where I can learn to track a face/head and other body parts, then use C4d model to attach to that body part. Even better, if I can attach E3D model to the part. Example, replace head with robot head, or arm with robot arm or big gun.

hi, i tried to track face, but geometry is very hard to fine exact where is head, but others parts of body, i think that is not possible for now, end head, is hard to, because, you should make 3d head exactly like the real head , the best is tracking in others soft end import sequence in element 3d , using the kinect of xbox, or other, it's just an opinion.

hey andrew and everyone else in here..
can you guys recommend a good tutorial for a complex camera movement. i tried everything. it just won't look smooth. i have started from scratch about 20 times by now. played around with pinning the camera to a null object. either the keyframes are heavily visible or or the motion is smooth but the camera is turning in weird ways. tried to correct the bezier curves by hand but it just won't work.
kinda frustrated at this point.. sorry
if anyone has good link or idea it would be much appreciated. thx

Have you guys yet tried to add parallax mapping? Can we expect to see that feature in the future? Along with that, can we expect relief mapping (also known as parallax occlusion mapping or self-shadow mapping)? Both of these are used a great deal in video game render engines, and can be done quite efficiently. They can also be done using the same map, just add an occlusion check-box and self-shadow check-box to the parallax tab (if you make one).

Here's an example of a simple parallax openGL shader (starting on page 16): https://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/tutorials/TyphoonLabs/Chapter_4.pdf

Awesome software.
Would it be possible to include a way to import the animation of a character from C4D when it is rigged. AE kind of does it and I know E3D does include animation, but not if it's rigged. If it's at all already possible, can someone please tell me how or direct me to a tutorial

Hey Michael,

I haven't found another way to do it, but I use the plugin SteadyBAKE to make the files into .C4D sequences (kinda like .OBJ's) and then import them into Element 3D.

There are other plugins that do the same, but you have to pay for those, where as SteadyBAKE is free. I think there is a tutorial on Youtube that shows how to properly use the plugin with C4D.

Is there anyway to create animated 3D objects (inside E3DV2, of course) by adding a native AE mask that has animations on its path propriety and then extruding it?
I know.... E3D has a amazing tool to import OBJ sequence. But, for this I need create my animation 3D object inside a 3D software like 3DS MAX, exporting the sequence OBJ files and then import to E3D. But, I would like to know If is possible make the whole thing inside the AE, by just extruding a animated layer mask.

Sorry my bad english. I'm brazilian and I don't want using google translate for this.

Animated masks are'n supported by Element but works quite nice (since V1) with the propper setup.

It's definitely got a lot to do with how you light the scene and the textures, what Michael already noted. Maybe you just need to up the multi and super sample rate a bit you might have it set on a lower setting, also there is a checkbox that says USE DRAFT TEXTURES, see if that is not accidentally on, and what happens when you bump the sample rate up to lets say 8x.
Other than that yeah, it's a lot to do with modelling, textures, lighting and your camera movements. Like, it's not just the gfx card that makes your scene beautiful

Hi.... thanks for this amazing plugin, but there is few bugs in Element 3d V2.2 and it would be great to fix this

1- Shadow and opacity of any object (shadow not fade with opacity). not working together as it was in AO in V2.0
2- After effects Comp as Custom Texture Maps... not working
3- Matte Alpha material it has matte issue as i want to use it above other objects.

As a suggestion if you can do layers in the material editor, so we can composite materials, this would be WOW.

Sup dudes!

Okay, problem time (well, not a problem, just.. my problem)

When using a group symmetry, the reflections are only useful on the original item, while the instances glitch. So, I've been creating and positioning my geometry within a group folder at 0,0,0 which has symmetry turned on so as to 'see' my final idea take shape. Then once happy, turning the symmetry off, duplicating the group and rotating the folder 180 degrees.

So I guess, my question is, is this currently the only workaround? Or have I missed something?

Any plans to add Alembic Ogawa support?
It's opensource, compact, clean and supported by most 3D-apps nowadays.
FBX is nice and all, but proprietary and comes in all kinds of flavors, is clunky and can be bloated with lots of data E3D will never need to support.

Hey i was wandering if you could add a project file option within element 3d UI and so when we get tired of making scene we can save as project file the whole scene and continue later still editable you know it's different from saving group folder as .e3d

Do you know whether or not a single C4d file runs faster than an OBJ sequence? My GPU can?t handle animations that are too big (understandably), but I don?t know if that is just because it is a sequence and that Element has to buffer 24 models per second.

Jeremiah, I haven't compared speeds between the two formats. In one of Mr. Kramer's tutorials, I think the intro to E3D 1.5, he explains that with an obj sequence, all of the frames are loaded simultaneously into your VRAM. So it follows that too many obj frames in your sequence would cause your graphics card to crash, depending on how much VRAM you have. (more VRAM = more obj frames) I don't know if C4D animations work the same way. The number of polygons and texture size come into play as well.

As of 2.0.7, motion blur works with animated C4d files. Motion blur does not work on obj sequences.

This is very cool update with matte reflection and symmetry feature. However, I still find loading PNG is troublesome in the latest release. I am loading up PNG image on diffuse map and turning on matte alpha, the region i expect to be opaque becomes black and it doesn't go away until i tweak alpha threshold. Alpha threshold gives bad result with rough edges. I am not sure where it went wrong, please point me in right direction.

Remember the alpha feature works for matte shadow only.

I would have rather seen an update with decent alpha channel support then the rest of these updates..

Just out of curiosity, will an animated C4d file be superior to an OBJ sequence when it comes to performance and motion blur as it is only one file and not a bundled group?

Any idea what this means? "Randomized Raytrace samples for multi-pass motion blur"
Sounds like a ray-traced motion blur render of some sort, but I see no options which seem to pertain to this.

Basically you can use fewer samples if motion blur is on. Because the motion blur passes will have randomized samples. So 5 ray trace samples with 6 motion blur samples is like 30 Ray-Trace Samples.

I work with element 3d (and 3ds max) professionally in advertisement and I have to say I'm so greatfull for what you guys are creating. It makes my worklife simpler and more fun. The thoughts behind elements 3d is completely in sync with my workflow and so far, whatever i have been missing in the previous versions, have been implemented in the next. Amazing.

Agreed. It is starting to get a bit complex. I think features get added based on Andrews needs for effects on other projects. I actually tried to follow along with some of the options in the video and could not replicate what he was doing. Hopefully Andrew will go back to doing tutorials on real situation requirements.

People will be able to do incredible things with this plugin but I rarely see anyone doing anything that's not in Andrew's tutorials. I think there's a real need for a series of comprehensive tutorials to handhold people a bit further so they can make the jump themselves into making more original works. Obviously Andrew is too busy to do this and his tutorials are a rare treat these days. I really wish he'd hire someone to make these under his guidance. People would be happy to pay for an advanced course I'm sure. Nothing to stop a third party doing this but maybe no one but Andrew considers themselves accomplished enough to teach the subject as nothing's appeared so far. Anyway I'm sure we'd rather have an official product. It would be another great money earner for Video Copilot

Agreed. It is like a giant swiss army knife. I love all the features but find it hard to sift through the past tutorials to find simple refreshers on key features. I would pay for a comprehensive advanced class or video course/reference.

I'd like to disagree. Yes, there are tons of new features but it got so much easier to do basic stuff and you don't need many of the workarounds required in V1.6. Also the plugin is out since 6 months and that's a lot of time to get your hands dirty on your own.

@Another Darren: You posted nearly exactly the same one month ago. Last time I replied with a link to a quite extensive 5 part tutorial I did about group folders and aux channels. Have you watched those? If yes, you should have quite a better understanding of some of the new features of Element V2.

It would be helpful if we could download the tut video, some of us have metered bandwidth, but really an amazing job.

@Mike: Without knowing where you're stuck it's hard to tell whether your complaints are legit or just lazyness. There is documentation, there are tutorials and inspirations what to get out of V2 and there are a bunch of 3rd party tutorials that should get you on track. I wonder if i.e. Trapcode users bother Peder Norrby the same way for not making enough tutorials himself

A lot of people want a lot of things, and most from differing directions. It's a diverse community here with diverse needs.

I'm not a person of faith, but VCP does have a number of customers that use their products for religious productions. I often don't agree with their views, I think cussing is fine, but I can respect that they don't like it.

Andrew has a talented team of people around him, I'm sure they are processing this. I don't think it helps them if we complain about complaining (like I'm doing ).

I feel confidant that if people have questions, they can get them answered here or on the forums.

Hi Klaus. Somehow I missed you posting that link. Not sure how. I will certainly check the videos out tomorrow and thanks for putting them together.

I've realised one thing that would make the whole learning process simpler. The Element 3d training by VC so far has been piecemeal, to mark each new release. As a result, when I get stuck I'm constantly having to wrack my brain, or if I'm lucky the notes I made, to find in which video and where in it, it was explained. Just a simple all-in-one-place logical runthrough would be a big help and confidence builder.

i found it easy to treat E3D as tool at my disposal for case by case project, instead of getting lost in it, use it for specific project, each will come with its issues and use E3D to find a specific solution. it`s like a dictionary, you can sit around and read it, but when you come across a word you know how to look it up in the book.

I tested on a recent project where pieces of a model that were from MAX (as obj) and .c4d from cinema..
No problems on my end. All super cool.

hmm maybe is 3rd modelso for destruction and explosions something like corners of destroyed buildings ? or even better animate obj sequence of explosions so you can stop the time and camera can go through and around explosion.

Really loving the group symmetry option, and I am currently working on a project where I'll sure be able to use the dynamic group folder reflections. You guys just saved me a ton of time, and I can't thank you enough!

Amazing update! And so glad it works with AE CC 2015! Great job! Well done guys!!

It's a great tool for really fast turnaround high quality stuff. If anyone has a sec check this example below of something we had to do in 2 days for a TV pilot. The drone model was based on a CAD drawing we cleaned up in C4D and then rigged and animated entirely within Element 3D V2. Everything else was all done in Element too. Certainly couldn't of done it in a different 3D package or using AE & C4D's Cineware in such a short space of time.

You can turn off object visibility, but leave cast shadows on. Around 21 minutes in the video above Andrew talks about it.

Is it anny chance for next patch to have option in UV Mapping next to UV Repeat to lock scale ?
Example i would adjust x and than need to input same number from x to y. It is more easy to see material on the fly than first input x than copy that number to y. It would be great if is possible to constrain proportions option which controls whether the width and height are linked to scale together, maybe something like lock switch next to it ?

do you mean in object view? what you can do now is hiding multiple meshes and then alt-click on the visibility checkbox to invert your selection. pretty handy new feature!

Hey Andrew! I was able to recreate the Avengers title sequence ENTIRELY in After Effects! While this isn't a replacement for C4D but it is awesome if you want to animate a small thing!
