The Lost Footage!

Back in March of 2009, I started filming a trailer/promo for Action Essentials to show off the new elements. Fun idea, Red camera, fake guns, so we started shooting as fast as we could but sadly, we didn’t have enough time to finish before the product launch. So it was left behind in the dust.

Now it almost feels vintage but there was a clip that somewhat relevant to the recent Machine Gun tutorial so I decided to release the unfinished scene for whatever it’s worth. (Gun still has orange tip… NICE!)

    November 29th, 2011 @ 7:55 am
@Goher, It was shot on the RED One MX.. I don't think the RED Epic was released back then :)
    November 29th, 2011 @ 8:19 am
@Goher: In the post he says it's a "RED" camera.
    November 29th, 2011 @ 9:44 am

Wait long enough. Something will happen to cause Sam to die.
    December 4th, 2011 @ 11:08 pm
Well. looks good... but a cleaner... do not miss his target in such a small distance... and the bullets, placed on the magazin of your weapon cannot be used in automatic guns without having trouble... you need... FULL METALL JACKET AMMO for cleaning accurate, fast and efficient...
If you need some informations about official cleaning, cleaners, known as officers or specialforce members... call me... it would be great to hear from you. ;)

I always thoughts that guys looked too hip to be a cop. Is he the fashion police?
November 29th, 2011 @ 4:01 am
My favourite part is where he's shooting photos of them a fair distance away with a wide angle lens...
    November 30th, 2011 @ 1:03 pm
Dude! I noticed that as I was watching as well! I paused to see what DSLR he was using, and noticed the wide angle. I was like, "...What??..." Lol

Nice clip. What I don't get is how a guy with a big machine gun always seems to miss his target in the movies. How about a tutorial explaining that? LOL
November 29th, 2011 @ 6:07 am
Any plans on completing the work ?
I want to see the ending too...!
November 29th, 2011 @ 6:13 am

November 29th, 2011 @ 8:15 am
Nice to see how subtle the muzzle flashes are, and how you composited the bullet impacts. Your using the "dust waves" as well at the impacts? Pretty damn good collection, this Action Essentials 2. Cheers!

OMG! I literally searched all over this site after the launch of the product to find the video you said would demonstrate it. I felt like I was the only person who realised that nothing ever came of it.

Please finish it and release it as it looked awesome and would still be a good re-boot for the product, even 2 years on.

November 29th, 2011 @ 5:03 pm
Nice work ...but the music doesn't feet the movie...
November 29th, 2011 @ 5:28 pm
Very cool. Nicely shot — The camera I mean, because the gunman needs to get another job. He missed and he was only across the street?! Gangstahs got bettah aim than that!
November 29th, 2011 @ 5:37 pm
are they spying with a wide angle lens?
November 30th, 2011 @ 12:37 am

November 30th, 2011 @ 9:08 am
Anybody catch the studio name on the building!?!!

"1041 Production Studios"

1041 N Formosa is Goldwyn Studio's "The Lot". (It's UA now.)

1041-Studios is actually on Onteora or someplace.
November 30th, 2011 @ 1:26 pm
Sound Effects! Sound Effects! First thing....If this guy is supposed to be a hitman he better hit the range for some practice time. MP5 that sounds more like a Giat Aa52/anf1. And lastly....where were the spent shells hitting the pavement? Sound Effects! Sound Effects! A lost art.

Fun stuff though!
November 30th, 2011 @ 1:35 pm
Maybe it is a Browning M2hb 50 cal
November 30th, 2011 @ 3:49 pm
Can anyone tell me is this the airsoft gun used in the video? If not, please tell me what kind of gun is it, and generally what kind of guns are being used in the action scenes like this.
November 30th, 2011 @ 4:11 pm
that was COOLLL!!!
November 30th, 2011 @ 4:32 pm
¿Is it me, or is the beggining's tune "Head Like a Hole" from Nine Inch Nails? BTW, awesome video Andrew
November 30th, 2011 @ 5:11 pm
Tokyo Marui Mp5. Airsoft with dual mags and extended flash suppressor. Most movies rent real steel modified to shoot blanks. Seems like it would be cheaper than paying a post effects house to create all the gunfire but I guess it depends on who is doing what and where.
    November 30th, 2011 @ 5:26 pm
Thanks for reply. Anyway, I want to know what kind of guns are being used in, lets say, "homemade" videos, low-budget stuff, if you know what i mean. Not high-budget films. To be more specific, I want to start experimenting with this kind of vfx (gunfight) and i need some gun replicas which i can buy online for example, nothing high-profile.
November 30th, 2011 @ 5:21 pm
Oh yeah, it has a fake Trijocon ACOG scope on it as well. At least I think it is fake. Kind of dumb to put a real ACOG on an airsoft....but you never know.
November 30th, 2011 @ 6:57 pm
What a Goofballs, sam was not suppose to die. Airsoft submachine gun used in the scene.
November 30th, 2011 @ 9:32 pm
For the record, Sam is an excellent shot which is why we asked him to do this with live rounds since we couldn't afford the SFX package. the SFX we're added later once we paid off the layaway. PLus Sam Loya needed "motivation" he's a ballzy actor that insists on authenticity.
December 1st, 2011 @ 1:07 am
That first shot/round is missing a bullet impact(unless he shoots out of the frame, eh)! He's aiming straight forward but the first impact is down on the pavement. The recoil should make the gun go up rather than down, dont you think? :)

I know thats not the point with the video, but anyway! :)

Oh, and the bulletholes on the pillar disappeared :(

I had so much fun scrubbing through each frame. I got to much spare time.
December 1st, 2011 @ 1:17 am
Great one!!!
still, you need to mask the right miror of the car, because we can see the crew (and you in the middle ) by the reflaction.

Great work Mr.Kramer!
John Kramer
December 1st, 2011 @ 7:58 am
For beginers this might look good, but look at the unrealistic smoke and that weapon sound is free sample from the internet, everyone uses it(plus thats not even the right gun sound). Also director sucked for deciding that the shooter miss the target...thats so..lame.And one more tint is getting old and looks fan made so my advice would be change the colors. But Andrew's tutorials are great, only maybe someone else should be responsible for colors and fix the things I've mentioned above.
    December 10th, 2011 @ 3:24 am
Any chance you have some work to show off so that you aren't juts someone talking out of your butt? what's that?... no? oh ....ok ....shut it.

hey andrew?
what is the next tutorial???
andrew fan!
December 1st, 2011 @ 12:26 pm
the soldier seems to be a pro with all that stuff hanging from his clothes but he cant even aim well:D you could simply make two headshots with blood footages of action essentials, that would make sense:D
December 1st, 2011 @ 1:58 pm
as usual perfect honey
December 1st, 2011 @ 3:32 pm
Guys alot of you missing the point here, andrew made the ground hits to show you what you can do with the effect. Got nothing to do with aiming or pretending to shoot a real submachine gun.
we all understand and know the fact that if we were to use a real MP5 we would be in prison andour beloved sam loya wouold be dead.
December 1st, 2011 @ 5:18 pm
Isn't the driver the guy from those Geico commercials?
December 1st, 2011 @ 8:53 pm
Nice scene Andrew. I know this request has nothing to do with After Effects, but I think it would be great if you could do a post on how you shot the scene. Go into all the coverage you shot [including any shots that didn't make it into the final edit]and how you went about planning the sequence. It would be nice to see screen grabs of all the shots you got to shoot the scene.

Great video,

Some Guy

pretty damn good! for a more realism the bullets should hit the wall much more to increase the fact that they just escaped from death (they are lucky)! I've the impression that the holes made by bullet on the wall vanished without trace lol! anyway very good job!
December 7th, 2011 @ 10:39 am

I would have switched the scene to a shock and awe. The guy with the machine gun shoots but on the other side one of the guy takes a hand gun and kills the machine gun guy in one shot. A unexpected twist. Just saying!
December 9th, 2011 @ 8:39 am
