Applying a Motion Tile on Stars layer is usefull too.

In the most recent version of After effects the expressions that are input for the rotation bring up expression errors. The effect still works but will this be a problem?

Minor detail is forgotten: When you turn around the planet the shadow stays on the same position, that's incorrect. Shadow needs to move the opposite direction. How to solve this?

The only problem here I am having is when I rotate the camera too much I lose the stars in the background. How can I repeat this background in 3D space so it's always there?
A.J. Flores

The easy way. I'd do a box (6 layers) around.

For those using CS6 and having problems using the expressions here... scratch them. INSTEAD, right click the position of the camera to SEPARATE THE VALUES and then ALT CLICK the X, Y, Z of EARTH and PICK WHIP X to CAMERA's X, Y to CAMERA Y, etc. Worked for me this way.

value + lookAt(thisComp.activeCamera.toWorld([0,0,0]),position)[0]

The expression doesn't seem to work properly with my CS6 copy of adobe, it gives me a warning when I punch it in. Is there an updated version of this expression?

Maybe your camera is not the same lenght as your comp? I had problems until I figured out it was because of that.

Good tutorial. Tried it with a camera parented to a null--didn't work. So here's a better expression to account for the null and also so the sphere can have it's own rotation as well.

As per Dan Ebberts on CreativeCow:

value + lookAt(thisComp.activeCamera.toWorld([0,0,0]),position)[0]

I tried with the new expression but my rotation still does not seem to respond. Any thoughts on why this might happen?

hey great work this is my first post but will not be my last, So i have found a couple problems with this expression trick. First; the expression takes over the rotation of the sphere so the earths natural rotation is sacrificed, and second; as the camera angle changes the light source changes, is there an expression that i can write to keep the illumination on the earth the same in relative space while moving the camera, it just looks a little weird if you add some camera shake because the light would normally be coming from the sun but in this case it moves with the camera

Andrew, You have just showed me the ability I've been dreaming of. Since I'm making a Halo 3 machinima I wanted to incorporate space shots of some of the planets. I though such possibilities to make them look real was only possible in CGI, but this has just showed me how. I've watched both tutorials and I love you for them, if I could afford your expansion packs i so would but im only sixteen with no job...

So again thank you so so so much I will link you the vid with it when its up on youtube

ANDREW IS THERE A WAY OF KEYFRAMMING THE ORBIT TOOL. BECAUSE I WANT TO CREATE AN ANIMATION LOOKING LIKE THE CAMERA IS FLYING A FEW DEGREES AROUND THE EARTH INSTEAD OF THE OBJECTS MOVING. NOW ITS A 3D SHAPE CAN THIS BE DONE? AND CAN THE SUN BEHIND BE DONE TOO?

love the tutorials Andrew and good luck with the Killer Bitch movie, i might be editing the trailer so might see you soon.

Hi , Andrew , thanks for this very interesting tutorial, i learn very much with your works here, both in post production techniques and in humoristic techniques .
I have a problem in one of my projects in which i use a fake 3d planet. i use a particular stroke making an impact on the earth, but my camera is moving aroud. So, the impact spot is moving and creating an ugly stuff. Would you have any idea to correct or avoid this? Do you recommend me to use a 3d software?
i send you the link to this work : www.julienstecken.com/dassault.mov

But, its a problem there, when the camera rotate around the planet, the cc sphere's lights rotate with the camera.
It's no visual diference rotate around the planet / the planet rotate on its own axis.

how do I if I want to rich the dark side of the earth without animating the cc sphere's light?

REALY SORRY ABOUT MY BAD BAD ENGLISH.

how did you get the camera to rotate around the Planet
joeymaceda
Actually, when your done with everything, you can add another effect to make it more 3d. Effect>Distort>Spherize. Then the center point should be in the dead middle of the earth then increase the radius until it looks more real.

Nice tutorial, one more thing though;

Maybe add value behind the script so you can rotate the world when your camera isn't rotating.

lookAt(thisComp.activeCamera.position,position)[0] value

And is there a way to get the light scripted?? So when you go around the world the "sun" keeps lighting the same part of the world when flying around it with a cam?

Because keyframing the light is kind of hard, its not like a simple 360 on the y-ax, its rotating on the z-ax... So someone knows something for this??

Tnx

Not that this was not a great follow up to the "Blue Planet" tutorial cuz it was! I love how you helped us 'space heads' by taking it up a notch! My thing is, why not up it one mo' time? How about showing us how to have a 3D solar system to fly tru too? We don't have to have anymore than 1 more planet. The thing is how to make star-space move around the planets the right way. If anybody feels me on this make some noise by asking for "3D Solar System". Think about it Andrew. I tried to do it on my own but since this is my first month with AE, God still has me beat on the creation thing...

Hey, does anyone know how to aply the same effect to a full 360 FILMED rotation of an object. So I get it to always face camera, but I want the time remapping to react to the rotation of the camera so that it always show the specific frame according to the rotation of the camera.... I don?t know if that makes any sense to you guys, but I guess there must be someone out there who might know the answer to this one...
