For people still using this magnificent plugin in 2020:
1) Switch to "Legacy ExtendScript\" (see other comments)
2) Create a Camera called "Sure Target Camera" if the camera is not generated automatically.
3) Create a Null objet and apply SURE TARGET to it.
The camera has to be created BEFORE the effect is applied.

I have AE 2020 and all I had to do was go to File/Project settings/expressions and on dropdown menu change Javascript to Legacy ExtendScript.
Be sure to be in 8 bpc or 16 bpc.
For some reason it have problem working in 32 bpc.

AE2020, it worked for me.
1. File/Project settings/expressions/LegacyExtendScript
2. Create a camera first.
3. Create a Null, make it 3D
4. Apply the SureTarget.Unparent the camera and reposition it.
5. Set the targets, the auto rotate and the timeline settings
6. Refresh expressions.
7. think positive
8. Parent the camera.
9. It works!
10. Not always....

I wish changing the JavaScript settings worked for me. Every time I load up sure target then create a new solid, AE 2020 crashes.

Can't get it working on AE 2020 either, ten years old, that is blowing me away. I get why it wouldn't work but dammit I wish it did, always loved Sure Target!

Here is the fix for the issue with AE 2019:
From Don on 02/11/2019:
I found a fix for CC 2019! Go to File/Project Settings/Expressions; In the drop down box select Legacy ExtendScript. Presto this solved my problem with a text going invisible and Sure Target not following targets.

Opening an older version of after effects (CC17) and applying Sure Target there, saving the file and importing it in CC19 helped in my case to have the plugin running.
Would be nice though to have an update, Sure Target really is crazy helpful at some projects. And I couldn't find any good alternatives so far.

I'm quoting someone who has answered this question somewhere else, as this worked for me:
"The plugin is not certified for CC 2017 but it seems to work (at least on Mac, I cannot test in Windows). The only way to make it work is to apply the effect to a null object after have added a camera to the comp. Save your after effects file and close. Reopen your project and the plugin works. I know this is not a normal procedure but Videocopilot has not updated the plugin some time ago."
So basically, do all your work, safe, exit, reopen. It's not very handy, so maybe refrain from using the tool in future

Win10 - AE CC 2018 - Sure Target 2.0.11
The only problem I had was the initial position of the Sure Target Camera, I solved Zeroing the X and Y coordinates.
Hope this help others while this bug is being fixed.

It doesn't behave as expected in AE-CC 2018.
Sure target camera doesn't align to targets, "auto rotate" doesn't work either.
It's a great plugin, I hope you're going to fix it.

After Effects CC 2018 wont work unless you build and restart AE. Will also break when working with Optical Flares. Anyone know if this plug in is still supported, or what version of AE it still works in without major bugs?

If I don't save the file and reopen aftereffects there are problems with viewing text (mac).
I also had problems with the scripts in the spanish version due to the accents of words like "rotation" that in spanish is "rotación"

I too would like to use Sure Target again and would pay for the pleasure. Short of that, I would love to have an official statement from Video Copilot explaining workarounds or limitations, so it's not just rumors out there.
The biggest problem with the most popular workaround (shutting down, opening up again) is that if you adjust one other item, the whole thing breaks again. Thanks.

maybe iam doing something wrong,...but can i use it as a "fly-by" tool.
I mean,....now it pause once it hit's the target, but I wanna make it more smooth going to the next object...without the pause.

Hi, on CC 2015,
you probably need to change the anchor point of the null from 0,0,0 to the center of the comp (exemple for an HD comp 960,540,0)

It didn't work for me in CC 2015. I ended up copying a comp from an old job where it worked and then it worked in CC2015.

Restarting AE CC works fine, but if you have 3D stroke in your scene the Sure target Cam takes ages to refresh any changes made to the stroke in AE CC15. Had to revert to version 1.5

When you have set up everything and linked all in Sure Target, save the project and shut down AE. When you next open all will be working perfectly.

So I was tinkering around with Sure Target and AE 2015 and I seem to have stumbled on a workaround. Setup your comp with ST and then save and close AE fully. When I re-launch ST seems to work as expected in the saved file. My guess is that something in the part of the plug-in that originally sets the ST expressions causes an error in AE. Maybe if one of the VC guys see this it will help them track down the issue.
Let me know if this works for you guys as well.
Also ST 1.0 seems to function fine in AE 2015 for anyone that it seems useful to still.

Ouch! Just discovered that SureTarget doesn't work with CC 2015. Please log this as another official request for a fix. You can't believe how useful this plugin has been for me. I've been pulling my hair out for 45 minutes until it dawned on me that there might be a problem with the latest Adobe release.
I'm sure you absolutely hate the idea of cracking this open to figure out what is wrong and fixing it, but it would certainly be a tremondous help to all of us who rely on it for our day-to-day After Effects compositions.

Bummer - such a useful tool. Here's hoping Mr. K and all at VC will come up with the goods. That said, I'm finding AE CC 2015 so buggy, I'm pretty much just using 2014 anyway!

geez stop braggging about this plugin, its not that intuitive. Also, for a product name "Sure Target" - the camera definitely MISSES THE TARGET. You should explain why in your video (this is noted by others on the internet who had problems with this function)Further, you dont mention if the targeting mechanism works with graphics...
Auto rotate is confusing for sure, this should be made more clear. IF the camera is staying perpendicular to the plane of the film gate, than the action shown by the demo of this plugin cannot fairly be called a rotate, but is factually a tracking motion....

Why is it that every time i add a text layer and turn it into a 3D object, it places it somewhere else and i have to go looking for it. Is there a way so it won't do that?

I think my Adobe After Effects does not register .aex files, I have tried using both versions of the preset and I have Windows 7 64bit AEcs6, but it will not register the .aex file, it does register .ffx sure target 1 so please tell me what to do please! I need to use this!

I am using Windows 7 64bit and Adobe After Effects CS6, i have copied the 64bit sure target 2 file to the preset folder but it still will not register in the program, and even when I tried the other Windows file it still did not work. How can I get it to work?

Quick question: When trying to use the "execute" feature for auto populate, I can't get it happenin'. Im following the directions but when I control+click my layers I get a pop up menu from AE instead of them being selected for Sure Target.
This a settings issue or user error on my part (on a Mac)?

How can i work with 500 layers...I added sure target for the 1st 100 layers but how do i make the reamining 400 the part of the same thing..because my typography reveals an image so all words should be in one camera

Unreal plugin. I am hoping to make this work with 3D text from Element 3D. Is this possible and what is the work flow. So far targets will not auto rotate as Element 3D is working in another world coordinate system. So it appeers. I'm ready to use both (hopefully) on a project this weekend. Thanks.

It took me some time to build up steam... like a long time. I start bouncing around in intermediate lessons and beginner tutorials. I admit Andrew pissed me of to the point were i wanted to rip him one. but i must say diligence pays off, Andrew you are AFTER EFFECTS.

Is Sure Target 2 compatible with AE CS5?
Because it is not working on my system. I'm on a Mac and I've installed it in the Plug Ins folder, but no Video Copilot nor Sure Target heading appears in the Effects & Presets window.

Andrew, great tutorial on Sure Target ... keep having to come back to it as I forget various aspects but being a teacher ... have to say, it is Drop & Cover ... not sure where you got the "roll" but you are forgiven as you probably aren't on the West Coast. Again, great tutorials and keep them coming.

I´ve just download this plug-in, it really seems to be really useful, I was looking yesterday at the tutorial and today I was put it on practice for the first time. But I had a problem.

How do you set time to each target? I'm working with sure target, and the targets are videos, so i want each video to stay on screen until it finish and then move to the next target.

easy: when you are at you first target, keyframe it then go to the end of that target and keyframe it with the same number as the first time.
it will look like this:
1...........1;;;;;2...........2;;;;;;3.......3
with the ...'s as the time the video plays and ;;; for the movement between 2 videos

I cannot get the auto execute to work correctly on my mac. I make sure that sure target is selected, I have tried both command click and control click and I always get an error when I hit execute. The control button on a mac will not let me select multiple layers, that is why I tried the command button.

One problem I am having is that when I use Sure Target 2, my screen flashes. Anytime I click around or change values, my screen flashes real quick. Everything works, but I can see this getting real bad for my eyes.

It would be great if there was a way to delay the camera from following the POI, as if the camera is looking towards the direction the target is moving. Currently the target and the camera move in sync.
I was able to accomplish this by putting an expression on the null layer's x and y rotations, but it would be great if there was some sort of "follow delay".

Great tool! Thank you! However, in CS5 Mac I'm having a few glitches. When the plugin is first applied I get an error message, saying that the plugin can't be found and the expressions will be disabled. This is simply fixed by switching the expressions back on and then it works fine.
The other glitch is in rendering if OpenGL is enabled - it just doesn't like it and often crashes. This is the only plugin I use that seems to have this problem on a regular basis, though it does sometimes also occur with the Foundry's Camera Tracker.

Great plug in & great tutorial! I'm suddenly having an issue though. Every time I attempt to move the position of the null object, the X position automatically goes to 0.00 the first few times I try. Not only that, but it will also jump to 0.00 randomly for 1 frame without a keyframe or anything! Ghosts!

Last time I checked stop drop & roll was for fires, I'd hate to be rolling in a collapsing building. ARGH.. Why can't I get darker particles on light scenes like you. As soon as I set mine dark in CC or particular, they vanish completely!

I downloaded the Sure Target 2 file but its extension is .plugin and i put it under my plugins but when I try to access it, it wont show up. I also put it under the Video Copilot presets but the problem is it has to be an .ffx to be a preset. Please help Btw, this is an awesome plugin and I really want to have it! Thanks!

Paste Sure Target 2.0 into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS3\Support Files\Required and it will show up under Effects.

Just installed Sure Target 2.0. But I'm getting lots of crashes when I try to preview my animations. I'm running windows 7 (64bit) with CS5. Is there an update on the way. Never had a problem with any of your other products. We love twitch and flares at my job!!! Please look into Sure Target. ThanX!!!!

If you are having problems installing the plugin in windows 7 x64 try this... copy the 32 bit windows plugin instead. It worked for me.

Just found a problem. If you do not have enough memory available to create the baked camera, the plugin will show you an error, and it will not let you exit. The error will repeat until you free up memory (RAM, I presume).

Just a workflow tip to those interested: On my mac the "u" key doesn't work as explained on the Sure Target layer. The expressions still show up, but if you hit "u" and then "shift-ee" you'll be left with just the keyframe layers.

Hi Mr. Kramer,
I just wanted to let you know that the SureTarget plugin feature "auto rotate" does NOT work if you change the orientation of a layer. It only works if you change the x, y, or z rotation of the layer. Just something to think about for an update. You're the man!

Hi Andrew - I am using ST 2 - have found that when Baking Camera I cannot do more than 30 secs selection with out AE CS4 crash. I have 8Gigs Ram working on MAC BP 3.06 Core 2 Duo. I am having to split the time line up into 30 second batches. Have you had these issues?

I have a problem. SureTarget doesn't automatically aim to the text targets. And if I try to aim it, the camera always follows and so I can't make the camera aim perfectly. Please HELP!!!

hey, so i had a big problem when using this yesterday to when doing a tvc, after i set up the 10 targets i wanted and key framed when each would be shown, i would then go back and make adjustment like re-frame with dolly or and wiggle or anything and all data would be lost? the targets are still in the target destination drop down but when i scrub through the timeline, no animation :/ is this just an old problem thats been fixed?

On minute 08:45 - spreading the keyframes by selecting them, then ALT click the last keyframe and move it left or right... it's almost two seconds faster!

I notice only a limit doing a recent project.
The position values of the "Driver Null" can't reach value over 10000.
In the previous version there wasn't those limitation.
But this remain a fantastic plugin!

Too add to your tutorial when using the print PDF from, to add a bit more depth and variety to your work, I have a suggestion for people to open PDF in illistrator and distribute some or all of the compound groups to different layers then export as PSD, which you can then import to AE, opening up a lot more options having different elements to play with and put ino 3d space instead of one big picture.

hey Rogier Righart well it depends cuz like if you want to go back to your first title dont type the number of the target you desire you must put the number after the title that is showing..Ex:Target one then target 2 then 3 after the camara whent trough al of dose if I put 1 is going to show 3 N 2 but if I put a keyframe at the desire spot and type 4 it will go to the 1st title with out showing the other two targets I hope I help you bro if not the check out the other suretarget tut from andrew he explains how to what your trying to do

Hi Andrew, Great Story - would have been quicker to call your wife's phone to find it but anyway - great tutorial. I've just spent two days doing a 3D camera animation with video windows and text the "old" manual AE way. I should have got your plugin which I'm sure would have saved me a lot of time. Oh well - I'll get it now ready for the next one. Thanks.

Loving your work....and i realy digg this sure target preset....i realy want to get full controle of camera movements in AE.
now that i am using your sure target preset....i have a quiestion.
lets say i have 4 targets...and now i want to move from target 4 to taget 1....i have a problem because the preset is counting back so the camera also passes target 3 and 2....but i want the camera go straight from target 4 to target 1....not seeing targets 2 and 3.....is it possible to do what i want??...if so how?

The download for mac isnt working for me, when I download it, it saves as SureTarget.plugin, which I cant view or install into After Effects. Im running After Effects CS4 on Apple Snow Leopard. Thanks

A really nice Plug in! Works fantastic.
I found it a little bit hard to animaze Grafics (psd) I did it over null-objects but they dont rotate with the null-object.
So I think I should link the rotation of the null to the psd?
I´ll give it a try.

Hi Andrew,
great work, but I discovered an error in SF2.0. Every time when I turn on 'Depth of Field' my AE crashes. AE then lets me safe the file before it closes. When I reload the saved file 'Depth of Field' is already on and I have no problem anymore. No big thing, but If you could fix this I wouldn't have to reload everything...

Andrew I love your work. I use alot of your tutorials for church events. Also, Im not sure what program you use for your screen capture, but i found one online. Last but not least.. I think you should make some really crazy advanced motion graphics. I love the more "high-tech" stuff!

So I'm doing the tutorial and everything appears to be working...with one exception. When the Sure Target plugin takes my targets, it's snapping to the lower left of the text instead of the center. This makes all my titles start at the center of the screen and read off to the right. For longer titles it looks really awkward. What am I doing wrong?

Great tool!! Thanks for all the tutorials! This text animation thing is actually the first thing i ever did in AE, so I really want to learn more about it... I did spot one quite big problem with this plug-in though. When I select "depth of field", the program crushes

I'll share the story about how I found Video Copilot.
I recently saw this video on Vimeo, which, as a 3DMax and video artist, and an appreciator of photography and architecture, blew my mind. And I have seen a lot.

I have used Adobe products for 15 years and Premiere for almost as many, but the one I haven't is After Effects and I've been increasingly curious about it lately. But then I saw a link a "basic set" of AE tutorials. That link led to Video Copilot. Yay.

i was one of the first to report this Depth of Field issue, so I want to be the first to say that after rebooting the computer yesterday I can't reproduce the crash. i was one of the first to report this Depth of Field issue, so I want to be the first to say that after rebooting the computer yesterday I can't reproduce the crash. I am pretty sure "Stop Drop and Roll" will be the next Dirty-South Club-Banger. Maybe you should contact Lil John and suggest "stop drop and roll" as a successor to "get low"

Great tutorial and even bigger plugin.
But there is a problem.
I am using windows xp 64 bit and adobe cs4 suite.
The plugin is working fine but when I enable depth of field option in the plugin after effect crashes.

everything works great except for Depth of Field. Cant turn it on and CS3 shuts down whenever I try. I don't think I'm supposed to do anything special am I?

You can't put the turkey in the microwave!!!!! You have to bake it!!! Do not boil it in water because then you can burn your house down. Then the firemen will have to come and why do you want to bother the firefighters? They could be sitting at home playing World of Warcraft? Who even plays that game anyway? It's not like life... You don't pay 14.95 to live life!!! back from where I'm from we learned to fight and not play games because Walmart was taking over the grocery industry. They make billions of dollars and they don't even tell you to not put a turkey in the microwave....

You might want to rethink that finding of your wife's phone next time and let her hang for awhile longer (lol). Just downloaded and "kicked" the tires on Sure Target 2 - very cool. I combined the plug in with some text layers and then animated the text layers on top for a very complex animation that took only minutes to set up. My clients will think I was up all night! Thanks for the freebie and I'll be waiting for Optical Flares to show my love.

AMAZING! This has saved me countless hours of time in work! I also like that you've added the idea of using a null as a position, which really worked well for me even when using Sure Target 1.5. Thanks again Andrew, truly spectacular.

Okay, I'm only in the first part of the tutorial, but I need to comment on 2 things.
1) You could have used another phone to call your wife's cell phone. Then just follow the ringing. <grin>
2) Movie version of you played by Tom Cruise. Don't know if you saw my comment on your actionsafe and titlesafe stuff. Tom Cruise is in a new movie called KNIGHT and DAY and if you watch the trailer from IMDB's homepage and watch from 40 seconds to 50 seconds in, what he says sounds just like something you'd say. It's your humor all the way. So then here you are talking about Tom Cruise playing you in a movie, and well, that just sort of Precognitive don't you think?!?!? Well I do.
Anyway, thanks for sharing not only your knowledge with us, but also your wacky stories. Looking forward to lots more in 2010.
