"Custom"was renamed to "Sprite"

I seem to be running into problems with my camera on AE CS6, when I set the stop watch for points of interest and position & move around in z space it is fine but when I move a few frames forward and repeat that action, I get this sort of glitchy image jumping back and forth as I can tell the values on the camera are not changing but it still occurs.

TIP: You can change the emitters position subframe to 10x linear. That'll give you smooth curves. Much simpler than having to keep a high framerate and skipping frames in render.

Cannot seem to get my light stream to be visible when a camera is visible. My version of after effects (cs5)tells me that the camera only works with 3D layers, but when I toggle 3D on the particles layer with the camera on, the light stream also dissappears... what is the solution? Also, I feel like the stream is emmitting or flowing to slow... the solution to that is to raise the amount of particles per second... and the frames per second of the composition?

Wondering... in my version of After Effects (cs5) I'm having difficulty with the camera. When I have the camera visible, the light stream disappears... It states a warning that the camera only works with 3D layers, but if I enable the particles layer's 3D switch, with the camera visible, the stream still is not visible. I too had to use the sprite and texture features rather than the custom particle. What do you know about cs5 particluar... what is the work around to be able to orbit around a visible light stream? Thanks...

So i'm making some similar effects with thinner light streaks and more particles. however i'm seeing a lot of jagged edges when the lines curve. any thoughts on the setting that might be culprit in causing a rough edge and MOIRE in the particle effect on a black background

Why don't you just play around and try different types then? You know, you don't have to do it EXACTLY the way he tells you to do. However, the option "Sprite" is probably there. Try that one. Should do the same.

in cs6 there is no Custom option, you can just select particle type as : TEXTURED OLYGON FILL, then in the Texture panel you just select layer : particle_50. it works.

One thing I found out: I had the problem that I could not see the lightstreak, despite I exactly followed Andrew's tutorial so I found out that you have to change the duration of "particle_50" to the duration of your "Nano_Ad", this works for me and I hope it may also helps somebody of you...

Here's a tip that stumped me for 15 minutes...MAKE SURE YOU CAPITALIZE THE E in Emitter! I had "emitter", and was getting squat in CS5. Also, as others suggest go down to TEXTURE to select your custom layer.

When I try this the hue/saturation adjustment layer does not change the color of the particle streaks.

Adobe CS5, Trapcode particular 2.0

I don't know how I got it to work, but eventually I did. It took me 15 min to get it working, the last thing I did before it started working was I shuffled Color FX layer down to just above the particle_50 layer, which I had as the dead last layer under the BG layer. I turned off all the layers but those two, turned off and on 'colorize', not much effect. Then I put everything back where it was and turned all the layers back on and it started working. Weird and frustrating. Try shuffling your layers around, mess with the Hue/Sat effect as far as turning off and on colorize, maybe you will stumble across it like I did! GL.

Hi Andrew, Love your tuts. So helpful and clear..
With this one, I'm having a small problem. My swirly has the same colour throughout, even on the more opaque areas where your swirly approaches white on these ares. "Colorize" in hue/saturation only seems to work when I have shading ticked in Particular, but then something happens where bits of the swirly get blocked or something.. If you or anyone else could point me in the right direction, I'd be so grateful..

The red X is there because you're using the trial version of particular. To remove the X you have to enter the serial code you get when purchasing particular

I don'w know if you figured it out yet but by changing the frame rate the curves become more smooth. If you increase the speed in the wiggle expression from the initial wiggle(.5,100) to wiggle (2,100) you'll see that the curves become somewhat broken. With this technique the curves become more smooth

wht you have to do is hit the stop watch then move it as if it was anything else.
for example how he shows you how to move the camera in a custom path, its basically the same thing. but when you do the path just dont have it set on the wiggle thing.

You can right click and select "Toggle Fullscreen". Or if the new version of IE, then you can zoom out/in the window itself (Botton Right)...

Evie, you can just hit the F11 key on your keyboard in the web browser, so the top / bottom panels will just hide and you are viewing the web content in full screen of your web browser. The other option is, of course, to set the video on full screen by clicking on it with right mouse button etc.

Need help to finish tutorial! OK I am having trouble with creating the light streaks with the Sprite option. I have chosen the sprite option. Then went to texture and chose the particle_50 comp. Then I used start at birth loop option. I can't see the light streak. If I use streaklet option it doesn't look as good. Please advise why I am not seeing the light streak.

I confirm it is "sprite" that replace "custom",
then choose "particles_50" then "start at birth",
for me it works as well. if it disappear, maybe look at opacity or operations before, cause for me it works.
so it was to confirm that it is at "sprite"

To Chris, the commenter below, about the sprite issue.

Newer versions of Particular don't have the "custom" option, they instead have the "sprite" option. To complete this tutorial select "sprite", then go down to "texture" and expand the menu. There you will see an option called "layer". Simply select your layer from the drop-down menu and everything should work just fine.

Sorry, I'm being a tool. Solved it.

Wasn't on Active Camera View, was on a different view. Meant the Adjustment layer wasn't being previewed. All good now.

For some reason, I'm not able to use the adjustment layer to add the effects such as colour and glow?

I can make the adjustment layer, add the effects, but they have no consequence on the image. I'm using CS4 with particular v2 on a Mac. Any ideas?

i'm using trapcode 2.0. did as told using sprite > texture etc. the effect isn't the same as the light streaks shown in the tutorial, it's more dispersed.. is there any way i can obtain the light streaks by using trapcode 2.0?

Great tutorial, This works with the FREE particular demo from trapcode.
And for those with 2.0 as said before there is no custom option, you'll have to use sprite, then you can select the layer under texture and you can choose for start at birth - stretch

Just rename the light "Emitter" after you get the error. It's case sensitive, so capitalize the "E".

If you want to change the name of the emitter go to the options tab at the top of the Particular effects panel. Type in what ever you want and rename your light(s) layer the same.

Yo, TrapCode's Particular v2 has no "custom" particle type. However, i found out that "textured polygon" works quite well instead of that... you might wanna add a note to others out there

you click the stopwatch and move it around and remember to move through time as well.

Here's one way. Let's say your layer with the stroked path is called "Stroke Layer". Copy the mask shape for the path and paste it into the position parameter of your follower layer. This should create keyframes that cause the follower to trace out the path over a 2-second period. Then just add this expression for position to sync it up with the animation of the "End" parameter of the stroke effect:

This is so irritating,
I did everything Andrew said but you cant see the light at all, you can only see the little two arrows following where the light is but no light. By the way if this helps I have CS4 and when I put the effect on the "Particles" solid and the put the option "light" it says:
"In this mode lights are used as particle emitters. Only lights whose names start with 'Emitter' are used. Creat a light with Layer>New>Light.

To change the name 'Emitter' open Trapcode Particular's Option box."

What do I do?!?!?!?

For many you are a good tutor but for me you are more like a dream come true. Iâ€™ll explain that. Where Iâ€™m from, you cannot learn those special effect or 3d software. Thereâ€™s no school for that. Iâ€™ve been seeking the net like crazy to find tutorial (especially about 3ds max and after effect) then a friend of mine living in the US told me to check you site. i just have one quick question:
i have an imac dual core 2.4ghz running leapord and i have after effects cs3. i made a video with this tutorial that was 1 minute 30 seconds long, and it took 4 HOURS to render!!! thats 2 min 30 secs of render for every second of actual video!

is there any way to make this faster?

I figured it out on my own. I just increased the frame rate to 90 and it looks fine. The other problem I get is that the trail continues to change as time goes on. I want just the beginning of the swirly to have movement within the particle_50 comp and then once it becomes part of the trail, I want it to be static. If that makes any sense. I think it would look more like the Ipod commercial that way. Anyone have any idea how to do that?

Great tutorial, but I did not like how the Particle_50 shape was static the whole time. Instead I made Particle_50 a one second clip where each part of the shape moved a bit. At the end of the second all the parts were at the same spot as the beginning so there would not be a jump once every second. My problem is that the final result looks like this

Just watched a thing called "Bingolotto" (a gaming show here in sweden) and i saw this very effect in there at a couple of points. Seemed like they just downloaded the project file though, since everything looked EXACTLY like it did in the project.

Anyway, great tutorial! Big ups!

To change your comp settings to show fps instead of seconds, click File > Project Settings

or you can Ctrl+Left click on the blue time numbers (?) in your timeline

For the tracing issue, I'd probably trace my object in PS that I want to motion the emitter around then bring the path in into AFX and set it as a motion-path for the emitter to follow. Havn't tried it myself yet, but it should work!

Alot of people are asking how to make it follow a specific shape okay for this my method isnt the best so no critics here its an easy way that doesnt require too much thinking just make postition keyframes and drag the light to the shape you want

It is possible to follow a object. Just right click on your movie, and choose follow movement, or something similiar like that. ( I didn't know really the english name, because I have the german version. Then choose your object, which you want to follow an hit play on Following Tool... hope you'll understand.

Great turoial!! im a total beginner at after effect, but after watching this trailer i kind of get the idear... but if i wan't too use a movie clip and make the light streak follow a point of movement in the clip.. (like in the nano movie) is that possible??

to answer the question, probably just use a motion tracker to track the movement of the object you want this effect on.

An very very nice tutorial like evereytimy by Andrew

. But I`ve got a question... It`s a 3D-room so I want to create a path for the light that looks from one site like an random path an from an other view when you use the Orbit Cam looks like a signature. That`s all no real problem but when I create the path by hand it don`t looks so smooth like when I use the wiggle function. It don`t looks good? So is there any smooth funtion i could use?

Very cool tutorial!

One thing to help.
A other way to solve the problem when you have hard corners in the streaks effect is to recomp it and set the FPS from 25 to 100. So 4x the original FPS. Then enter the first comp and stretch the time back to 25%.
Now you got a nested comp running on 100FPS BUT with the time stretch of 25%. that's it.

Very good the tutorial one! I find that it gives to adapt and to make with that the lights follow specific points using instead of wiggle, the anchor point of the particular one, livening up it as if position was one
