The same is happening for "hot stuff." It's almost as if the track matte isn't applying (yet it works for the blur).

Could someone assist me with the turbulence? It appears to affect the entirety of the logo I am trying to dissolve despite the fact I have the texture comp on top, luma inverted applied to the turbulence. No matter how I move the texture comp, nothing changes.

Hi, tutorial is awesome but I am stuck on the displacement map. The transform doesn't affect displacement position. I am not sure why... I did the stage step by step few times. Still doesn't work. I use CS6.

At 29:28 where i'd want to deal with the black background, when i set it to "screen" then the rest of the image is transparent...
How do i fix this?

This was so helpful! Thank you so much for posting these. I only had one issue. My video source wasn't lining up with my disintegrate and was also bigger. This was all in the Disintegrate 2 comp. Any ideas?

Really hope someone can help me, I'm to the point in the tutorial where I'm using the adjustment layer and linking it to the video input via displacement map, but its cutting my actor in half at the waist. This is too complicated. I could hardly follow you up to 15 minutes into the tutorial, and then I gave up because the steps simply had different results in my video than in your tutorial. This is probably a tutorial for people who have worked with After Effects for years.

I've been using after effects for a few weeks. This tutorial is very easy for me to follow and I ended up with really good results (no, not perfect, but still pretty good)
You just need to pause the video after each step and take your time to get it how YOU think it should look instead of just using all the same values as the tutorial.

Awesome tutorials! I just was wondering if you could apply the disintegration fx to a cc film burn. For example, a piece of paper burning from the cc burn film transition effect (mainly the random seed points that spawn), so that it would look like the paper is burning realistically instead of left to right.

great Tut. the only "problem" I encounter is when I, instead of granate, use text or some PSD file. Then the "Hot Stuff" layer doesnt work. Any idea how to fix this?

Overall great tutorial. Next time could you make sure the files are the same and all intact in the project zip file? The background isn't included and the video of same is a different size and resolution, so there was a lot of time spent making things match.

Hi there.. I'm busy making backgrounds Theatre production we're holding. I need to slow this transition down to about 15seconds so that it can fit with the scene. Basically someone pushes heaven off the stage and it all turns to hell. When I slow it down by extending the time of my comps it doesn't have the same effect.
Does anyone have any suggestions? It needs to take longer and still look real. its a tough one for me..

I am frustrated. I followed the video to the smallest detail, every setting, every expression, every title change, even every example process that he later deleted as a joke. Everything. Yet, once I get to the creation of the second disintegrate comp, *nothing* is even close to what he is doing now.

Any one know what I am doing wrong? At around 20:00 when he is doing the Hot Stuff part and he makes the changes to the original comp... when he goes back to the disintegrate comp... I am loosing the grenade image. Instead of the image being disintegrated, I am getting the effect of only seeing through the white part.
Any help would be great.

Well ummm, I'm not much of an adobe user but this is for a school project and it would be really helpful if you could help me. You know the color adjustment layer and when you do all the curves thing, Well it doesn't only happen to my tail it also happens to my whole picture. Yeah the whole is gold when i press play and i really have no idea what to do.

Try combining the effects you (I) 've learned with a bunch of tutorials for one movie, example: Do the demon face warp thing and the main character goes like "OMG ZOMBIES" and he shoots these zombies (gun blowback and muzzle flash to make the shots), they regen (there's a tutorial for that).. and i don't know, he casts holy water against them, and they..glow? And disintegrate.. That'd be cool

I have used this displacement technique so many times, but for some reason, this time it isn't working. The expression on the position for the transform effect isn't keeping the layer from moving entirely with the displacement.

Maybe someone alreaedy covered this, but I can't read older posts on this site. I was hoping to use this effect where the TEXT burns off but I guess because the text is WHITE it doesn't seem to grab the "HOT STUFF" layer so well. It just takes on a smokey/whispy kind of look. I don't get the "fiery burn" happening across the text as it wipes away. Got any pointers?

Excellent tutorial, I was searching for something like this so that I could create an effect of a vampire burning. Unfortunately, I couldn't film against a green screen so I had to just mask around my actor and then place footage of the background behind him.

Great tutorial everything came out looking great up until the step around 32 min when you take the disintegration comp and the video source comp. Some reason for me all the fire and such disappears and it becomes just a transition it looks really bad and it happens when I put the bg in. Other then that up until that point it is usable and I have another way to add the background. It just sucks I cannot figure out how to add all the cool stuff at the end because it somehow messes up. I think I messed up somewhere I cannot figure out where and when I get some free time I am going to try and redo it all

The part at 3:28 where you say "so... we'll animate from 0 to 100... by setting the stopwatch there..." makes no sense to me. You say that, but your cursor is on 150, you set the stopwatch, and suddenly two keyframes magically appear... not from 0 to 100, but from 100 to 150... =/

Great tut, difficult but great, slainte mo chara!!
On completion of this I done a RAM preview, all appeared fine.
However, when I exported my comp, black rectangles appear in place of the particles i created. I tried altering the transfer modes, no joy, strange one, not sure if it's particle world of what, still should have worked!!
I've changed the particles & used trapcode particular instead & it works fine now. Anyone have the same problem with particle world.

I am not quite sure how you got the color of the fire. Mine seems to be all one color and I do not have the white hot spot.

around 8:00 mark I get lost I know expressions that is not the issue. The issue is when I move max vertical displacement or max horizontal displacement It does not dissolve up like yours it either moves left or right or dissolves left or right it does not stair case dissolve. It is always even. not staggered.

hey i am having trouble durring the turbulence part. i think i narrowed it down to the linear wipe because the image i am disintegrating is visible in the black part when in ur comp it is vis versa. how do i change this please help.

I am doing this tutorial and there seems to be project files missing. The Background file is all together missing and the Sam Loya file is only 105 frames instead of the full 240 of the project.

You are doing something with the texture comps you are not mentioning... every time I add the blur and turbulence to the origin in screws up the displacement, instead of burning away like it is shown it does this weird slither away

Hey Andrew, when you click in Position in transform, at de Displacement, it appears on the comp a place to write "calue+...", but when i hit the stopwatch of position, it does not appear anything to writ that code, Thanks for the help you give me in every tutorial.

It`s important to khow that the tip with CC Transform (when its correct DisplacementMap) will not work if your composition uses any of none-square pixel aspect ratios.

Brilliant tut and got it all working, forwards and reverse...my problem is that adding the displacement layers is causing the footage to blur slightly (working with PAL SD footage) and so when I reimport into Avid there's a noticeable shift in the quality of the disappearing layer compared with the original footage.....I can get around it by adding a linear wipe to the Displace layer as an adjustment track matte, but was wondering if there's a way to keep the quality of the original footage once it's had the effect applied?

I had to paste the displacement expression in the ANCHOR POINT of the transform effect. Not the POSITION. Not sure if I'm the only one with this problem.

One of the best tutorials, thanks man great job keep up the good work, your products are also great.
BTW, mystic7, there are a couple of things you didn't think of: did you put the BG at the BOTTOM of the timeline under everything and then set disintegrate (wow its so hard to spell this word) comp to screen? Also, the BG didn't appear in disintegrate because you put a black solid as the background to avoid transparency freaking out.

This is the coolest tutorial of them all. It is so complex with all the layering, adjustments, and precompositing, that I have not been able to get it totally right. Make cause I'm on CS5, or have some different defaults. Would love to be able to study the finish project and see how each part makes it tick. Please consider adding the .aep file to the project download. Thanks.

I've gotten through a few tutorials now, but never am I able to get all the way through without something not working the way it does in your tutorial, which is very frustrating. In this case it's adding the background (yes, I know, your BG is missing, I found another to use). When I add it, the flames do not appear when scrubbing through the timeline, and if I add the background directly to the video source comp, it doesn't appear in the main comp (Disintegrate).
There are some incompatibilities between CS4 and CS5. Perhaps it's time to upgrade and do some CS5 tutorials! Other than that, what a resource!

Hey, first of all i want to thank you for all the tutorials. I was trying to do this effect but when I change the Track Matte to Luma Matte the only part showing through is the gray area where the black and white meet in the linear wipe transition. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks

Love your tuts. Having issues getting the Displacement to work in CS4, on a mac. Put the layers in the correct order and applied the displacement map, chose layer 4. Displace as my map layer. Added the Transform effect, wrote the position code...move to top of Displacement Map like instructed. But when I tweak the vertical displacement setting like you do, my image still moves up. Odd.

Obviously, like everyone, I love the utorials, as well as everything else you do.
However, I am having trouble with this one. It works fine with any image, but I cannot seen to get it to work on text, or anything white.
That is, the "Hot stuff" layer in particular. Is there any way to get the same burning effect on something without colour in it?

very nice tutorial - very useful. I tried it on old vampire footage, but the problem is that I can't use the keying correctly though previous Day to Night Conversion. Imagine its all blue colored and I want only the actor to be disintegrated - is there a chance to get the same effect by using masks? Thanks for an answer.

As usual, Andrew, this was an excellent tutorial. However, your viewers should note that the disintegration technique only works for computer graphics. I tried disintegrating my boss and it didn't work; he's still alive. Bummer.

Also I bought the 500 sound effects you have and just got it today. but very disappointed because there is no sound effects like the ones you use on your movies! why? like the FLY.WAV for the zoom out of earth? where is that? and the for the suicide head shot training where is the gun and other sound effects you use for many trainings?
Did hear each and every one but nothing found nothing i have purchased now the bullet DVD lets see how this one is.

Awesome tutorial! I had one problem tho.. My animation was really short/quick. I think it's because you have your timeline set to frame and mine is set to seconds (or the other way around), so I made it too short.. How can I change that setting ?

well..that means u can have a matte of Sam..i think if the Effect is used on a normal layer with an animating circular mask...and a track matte of sam...i think Sam can be placed at the end of stake!!!:p

Great job, this is the longest one I have watched ever. This affect is similar to the one in the new GI Joe movie coming out when they "burn" the Eiffel Tower. But its some supper corrosion where it green and awesome. nice ending too

I've been messing around with this trying to figure out why you can't add some effects to the "Hot Stuff" adjustment layer, mainly Curves obviously, and so far I don't know WHY it's coming up with the error, however when you deselect/turn off the "Displacement" adjustment layer, you are able to add and manipulate the Curves effect to the "Hot Stuff" adjustment layer.
However, unfortunately, once you turn the "Displacement" adjustment layer back on, you get said error.

I would just like to comment how much I appreciate what you do. One day I want to work special effects for movies and I think you are helping me get there. I've been a video editor for many years (Avid and FCP - amongst others) but until recently hadn't played with After Effects. this tutorial is great, I have one problem, though. Whenever I use the "Displacement Map" effect, it moves the whole image around and doesn't make part of it "fly away" the way it does for you. Is that a settings problem or am I just too bad to follow what you're doing after watching it for like 10 times?

I love the look but got lost somewhere and it didn't work for me. I was trying without the grenade and trying on some Text and just couldn't get it to work. Oh well... Lots of steps to get right and the player wouldn't let me DL the video like I could previously so I had to start all over everytime I missed a step which was the biggest problem.

Just wanna say i dont do this for work, but I LOVE THIS!!!! you really made the tutorials i can only dream of, its all i wanted to know!!! i think the guy who made the comment about the burning from the inside out by using a radial wipe means by using an iris wipe. radial wipe isn't circular.

It is nice but really it is kinda look fake cuz human tissues doesn't burn like paper. u needed to add some real elements inorder to make appear more realistic. overall for free it is beyond good.

Booooring... It's like the very first After Effects tutorial I went through -- back when it was owned by CoSA. It's so obvious -- just nest 35 discrete particle effects and animated elements inside five precomposed compositions and wire them up with the pick whip and a handful of expressions, duh...

I remembered where I have seen some cool disintegration animation - from "The Chronicles of Riddick" at about the end of the movie where the blond necro walks into the fire storm (or something like that) and he dies pretty cool

Its awsome to see your tutorials. I have never had a better teacher, and holy crap where do YOU learn everything, you must be an genius :0). You have helped me out a lot, and i have already made an commercial for my churchm Salvation Army Halmstad Sweden for our conference, i based it on some of the info in the fracture design tutorial. If any one want to check it out look for our group on face book Salvation army halmstad. I just the clinch and the added folders that split up and in the end the whole video footage explodes, all thanks to Andrew Kramer :0)

You know, when energy wipe, soul removal and the healer tutorials were relatively new, and "great" I felt this site had lost it's peak.
However, with the fragment, the ring, the HUD and this, you're turning the "low" right back for me.
Excellent tutorial. There's some stuff I'd change to make it look a bit more crisp, but the point is I now know techniques to do this effect, so the crispness is for me to tweak. This tutorial is really kick-ass.
If you keep the quality up like this, this site will start needing ads. You know, not NEED them, but you'll get a lot more hits with tutorials like this.

I think I have found a gold mine, here on this site you maybe learn more than on a video-editing school. Because of Andrew Kramer I’am getting use with AE and a little bit with 3D Max. First I’am going to make all tutorials 5 times and than it must be possible to create something by your own. Sometimes I think: 'why does someone ask money for this ridiculous thing' but order a product on this site is really worth it! and I’am really going to de that.

This might sound really dumb, and it probably is but how do I change my standard anchor point position? In your tutorials the anchor point is always centered (for examle: at your text layers), but when I add a text layer, the anchor is all to the left. And repositioning isn't a solution because if I change the lettertype or type something different, the anchor point isn't centered anymore.
And thanks tutorial, your tutorials help me allot.

Excellent stuff! Just what I was looking for.
One suggestion: I'd really love to BUY a dvd of this tutorial and some of the other more recent ones... like getting hit by a car, so I could follow along easily while trying this out on my own work.

Wow, the tutorial is very long and complicated but well worth the "wade through". There are so many gems that one can pull out of this one tutorial it's really amazing.
When I watched the video before the tutorial was released I was certain that you had used shatter (for part of the effect). Nope.

I don't understand why you deleted the effects from "Hot Stuff" only to add them back. Why not just change the blur to a small amount, then change the turbulence? Did I miss something somewhere?

I guess it’s not a secret and for Andrew itself that people do that (like with other selling projects so even people who involved in graphic industry couldn’t notice it, cause they just not as famous as Andrew’s files). But what is pissing me of, that some of them lazy enough to not changing a little thing in projects files except the logo or title.

Another amazing tutorial, thanks. So much in this one. I feel the need for a tutorial on pre-composing still not clear on all the ins and outs of using it.
Got to feel sorry for poor old Sam though, he's been turned into a demon, had worms crawling under his skin, run over by a truck and now been burnt to cinders!

There was so much here. I do not say that as a complaint, but as an observation. There were layers on layers, and I am not meaning to play on words there.
I appreciate your two attemps early on to keep people following and not starting to fade. You probably could have used another one of those around the 30-35 minute area.

I appreciate your two attemps early on to keep people following and not starting to fade. You probably could have used another one of those around the 30-35 minute area.

Good Lord... very inspiring indeed. Excellent tutorial which not only shows what's possible in AE (via Andrew) but reminds me on how much work I gotta do to catch up to speed since I've been at this only a few weeks. Though I've been producing films and video games successfully, learning AE has been an absolute blast. It's fun to get up before the alarm clock goes off and continue the education with Video Copilot at my side. Appropriate name indeed. Thank you Andrew and Co.

"WHY COPY AND MAKE MONEY ON IT". I was at opening day Phillies Game last week. The production company that does the Jumbo tron graphics has some of your stuff on there unless you were part of it. My question to you is? Whats your opinion about others stealing your stuff and making money on it? I own a small 3d/Motion Graphics/Graphic Design production company. I know I wouldn't be to happy if others are taking your project files to make money on it. thanks again for an awesome site and info.

Hey Andrew, did you see the movie "Knowing" yet? There is a scene about 35 minutes into the movie where a jumbo jet crashes. The shot itself lasted about 2 mintues and the special effects are AMAZING. Thought you might like a heads up in case you haven't seen it yet! Great job on the tutorials bro. God bless!
