So I just watched Venom and there was a scene when Brock's face warped partly with venom features. Although it has been many years since this tutorial, this was the first thing I thought of when I saw that scene. Obviously there's a bit more that goes into that transformation, but I thought the process must be quite similar. I even went to see if you had any part in that movie but you weren't listed.

I just removed a stunt prop from a handheld shot by doing the "stabilize-destabilize" method. Thanks also to Sir Render for simplifying the scale situation–worked like a charm. THANKS Andrew Kramer for this time-and-again useful tutorial!

Anchor Point, Position & Rotation points aren't in Stabilize Motion in AE CC 2014?
So, here are the anchor points that get created when you stabilize:
- Feature Center
- Confidence
- Attach Point
It doesn't really make sense to Pick Whip to any of these?

I've successfully used AK's awesome technique multiple times in my project, however only on shots with no camera movement (only subject movement). Now, I want to do it on a shot that has both camera and subject movement. Tis not going so well. thoughts?

A Newbie facing some problems here.
The Stabilize tracking - Reverse Tracking ain't working when the footage is scaled and positioned. However is working well when the footage is not.
Tried Pre-composing the footage, but then Pick-Whipping for Reverse Tracking gives some errors in the Scripts, saying the given layer cannot be found.
My footage had to be scaled and positioned. And Pre-Composing the Stabilized and Reverse-Tracked Footage crops much of the shot.
I sure can make another shot..doing nothing but practicing. But then Solving this would be much more helpful to my curiosity.
Hope someone can guide me...

Andrew, This is a great tutorial. I've been using AE for 12 years and this is the first time I've been exposed to motion tracking. I'm doing well with motion tracking but when I try to use the "pick whip" to track the mask, I get lost. Something about when you dbbl clicked precompface, another timeline appeared. I'm using CS4. I've been stuck on this for days. I've tried everything I can think of. While this is being moderated, do the moderators know the answer?

First and foremost you are an excellent mentor and teacher of visual effects. Do you have plans to reshoot your tutorials being that most of us should be on CS6 and there are some new and different things that should be updated. For example you no longer need to hit ALT and double-click..now you just double click...thanks for all of your help!

Great tutorial but it just skips over tracking scale. In my video I have my actor moving toward the camera making the scream. As such, scale is enlarged as the actor moves forward. Does anyone know how to fix this and make the liquify and color correction effects "stick" to the face and enlarge in scale with this forward movement? It would be no fun to just COPY what Andrew has already done here, so we're trying to be creative. Ive tried pick whipping scale to scale (didnt work), scale to scale with expression *-1 (also didnt work) - Im sure someone wants to also be creative and try this (its being used in the movie Paranormal Activity 4) So lets get our heads together and figure this out so its not some industry secret.

If you have some problem to stabilize , make your stabalized layer a 3d layer, and add a camera to the comp and parent it to the stabalized layer

Hello Andrew,
I have a shot that i stabilized with position, rotation AND scale. I've parented the position to the Anchor point, the rotation to the rotation *-1 and the anchor point to the position. All is left now is the scale. How would I go about that?

When reversing the tracking, pick whipping the values as shown, nothing seems to happen and they stay at 0. The text is red. Any ideas?

Andrew or someone HELP! After effects cs5.5 has the new warp stabilizer that automatically stabilize's the footage for you. This throws off the whole stabilize motion step in the tutorial. And simply ''tracking motion'' doesn't work. I cant get the distortion to stick in cs5.5. HELP!

I have a question. Please help.
When I change the opacity or any effect it only shows the result after I drop the mouse, at the point. It doesn't show the effect while I'm cycling trough.. to make myself an ideea. Also with the video, when i slide trough, to see what i get as result. It doesn't show me the video. While i drag the timeline. I hope someone understands what I mean.. please help.

I just tackled this tutorial, but only after spending aaaa lot of time figuring out what was going wrong.. I kept getting black borders all over the place, until!
I went in and changed the Composition Settings to a higher resolution..
"Allowing the footage to move around" didn't really explain it enough for me, a noob, to understand..
So if you just can't get rid of those borders, change the composition setting to a greater number

Everything goes okay until i do the "tricky bit". When I link the anchor point etc to the opposites on the stabilized footage, the footage, does not return to it's "original state" as it says it will in the video. I downloaded the project files to follow along to and they are different sizes etc to the ones in the video so I had to apply my own adjustments to give the rotating footage "space to move around" please help. thanks

Same problem i am trying for 3 days (20 times i think) i cant get it to work, the liquefy effect it doesn't follow my tracking data, i am doing something wrong but have no clue. I use ae cs5 . if someone knows were is the problem please leave a comment. Thanks alot.

I've been at it for hours. I'm so lost. I'm on adobe AE CS5, and after linking the tabs the image still moves everywhere. And when distorting the image it doesn't even follow the tracking. :/ Im going to keep on trying, but I can't go at this forever. I'm running in circles here.

so im team lead of a game project using multiple softwares (adobe flash cs5, adobe photoshop cs5, adobe after effects cs4, 3dmax 9 and a few other softwares) the game is a dragon age origins type game, it will be rather extensive with over 50 location, i have an ad (not preview) on youtubbe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ1EC6WhkHY built using products off here, and after effects. but the game graphics are all computor generated and i want a human face to transform to a demonic face, wud htis method work for it

Well, I figured how to do what I was stuck with - You have to choose "Open new composition" or something, that little checkbox that pops up when you choose "pre-compose".
Anyway, Daakoo, you have to make it centered, for instance on the nose - This is how you do it:
You look at the "toolbar"-thing were you see what tools you can distort with.
Beneath that you should see a tab saying "Distortion Mesh Offs". What I do is, I press the "bullseye"-marker, which then lets you choose where to center the effect, and it should then follow the movements of the tracking-data. I think.
The one bad thing is, if you have started distorting and stuff BEFORE you place the "bullseye"-marker, the distortion will be reset.

i hav a similar problem as djani has..
on top of that the liquify effect doesnt just remain where i want it to be..its all over the place.
im using cs4 too...i do the same steps as you but your distortion effects are so neat and remain at the right place...

Hello! This does NOT work for me!
When I hit "Precompose", the tracking motion data is GONE, and when I hit ALT Doubleclick on the Precomposed file, I don't see a NEW file at all - Just a preview of the file, so where the hell am I going wrong?!
I need freaking help, gotta do this.

Hello, one question - why you didn't it by "track motion"??? - to make tracking points and assign to null object and then you can assign anything (deformation, skin, glasses, ...) to the null object(?) Is it possible??? I think it is much more easyer, then to make this points by "stabilize motion" and reverse it back... ? Isn't it? I don't speak english wery well, so I am not shure if you speak about this possibility somewhere in your tutorial ... ? Thank you for your reply

I have taken many of these tuts and they were all very helpful. This one was so much fun for me and some of my friends which I had invited over in order to "demonize" them. Hey there! Tutorials look great. Trying this one (my first attempt at any). I'm fine until it comes to the liquify part which does not seem to want to track! Hi I'm trying to get this to work, and I really want it to work, cause i imagine I can use it for a thousand different projects...
My problem is "I think" the object that needs to be tracked. I have an elevator door, where I stand in the elevator and the doors will slide open to the right. I want to put a logo on the door, so it will slide to the right as well.. Also a second thing is I need a mask or something, cause the doors slide into the wall, thereby dissappearing...
I have done all the things the tutorial says, but the trackpoints are getting no good result. No Eyes in my footage or something, so will this even work with a shine elevator door? I have a scratch where I put my trackpoints, but it doesn't stick well...

Except…mine includes scale tracking as well... And...I've tried everything but that part won't work at all.

Awesome tutorial this stabilizing/destabilizing is amazing! I had a question though. Is there a way to make it work for scaling? I tried adding the "*-1" to the end of the scale pick whip and the whole video was screwed up. Deleting the scale from each was the only way to get the normal results you have. If there is so way around making scale work that would be great. Thanks

hi, amazing tutorial as always i only have one problem and if you could help that would be awsome, basically when I go to window- there is no option for tracking control however in the begining you metioned something about going to workspace motion tracking which i can select yet doesn't do the same thing, so can you please help by telling me another way i can find the tracking controls that would be great because as you say it's a VERY usful technique

My small brain did not understand that: Why reverse stabilizing? Why not just regular motion tracking, applaying data to null object and parenting the adjustment layer which we applied liquify? Why why why? I know you have an excellent reason.

Tracked it,precomped it, applied pickwip to the precomp = error out
Could be AE bug on my end, any comments welcome will finish comp in NUKE and mocha, but would love to figure out issue

This is pretty cool, the only problem I'm having is animating the mask, I linked it to PreComp, but When I try to adjust it I get the Mask Path option instead of Mask Shape and it won't let me adjust the points. Does anyone know if there is a setting I need to change or something?

Hey,problem...everything on mine worked except after u pick whip or whatever it's called all the position, rotation *-1 and anchor point it is not centered on the project and is partially hidden in the top left corner. I followed everything pretty close so any idea of why this happened?

i have been trying to make an effect on the video clip by means of AVID COMPOSER at first, but , after several trials, i realized that that tool is not optimal for the professional effect, cause, the effect resolutions or effects were confined as i thought, therefore, i decided to choose more advanced tool called 'AFTER EFFECT CS'. though i am novice now, i want to get advanced more than now with the help of this explanation that you provide me with. thanks.frankly speaking, your explanation is complicated . but it challenged me to get improved more than ever.

Wow, I'm confused. Once I get past the re-sizing the "PreCompFace" layer, everything goes to hell. I follow all the steps exactly with the Parent Rotation, Position, and Anchor, but then it leaves me with my video up in the left hand corner of the black comp screen. I've done it about 14 times and it never goes past that point, am I missing something? I have AE-CS4. I also shot my footage on a tripod so other than my actor moving, the shot is already stable. Does that screw it all up? Please help.

Everytime i do motion tracking, i mimic the exact way you do it and the motion tracking never works, it always goes of in random directions.... and i never once have gotten a good motion track

Hey andrew, awesome tutorial by the way, hey i have a problem, in the beggining after stabilizing the video when i precompose, AE doesnt let me uncheck "leave all atributes", is this relevant, anyhow, the tracing doesnt show up on the precomposed video, thanx, keep up the good tutorials!!!

I had a bunch of problems with this tutorial, the tracking was always off, there was no rotation in my shot so the data was different, couldn't wip the right values, it gave me a black border and a bunch of stuff
not to mention the distortion woudn't stay on.

Ok so I get the reverse tracking, and this is an amazing tutorial for sure, But I have a question for you. You Stabilize for rotation and position, well what if you want to track for scale as well. for instance my shot has a charicter begining as a long shot then as the shot progresses he walks past camera hes always square to the camera. under stabilize motion would u track scale as well , if so what would be the expression to reverse the scale? Would you have to pickwip the precomps scale to the comps scale? just curious thx

the tracking for the warp and paint tool is good as long as the subject doesn't turn his head left or right, then the mesh will start moving out of place and then manual keying of the mesh percentage and positions will be needed. the same goes for the texture applied to the skin.

i'm learning the face wrap now.but the project seems differnt from tutorial's besides my AE cs3 can't find the samfootage.mov does AE3 Support MOV?.I really really wanna learn it.could you upload again.

thanks a LOT for this tutorial. It taught me exactly what I needed to know for a school project. Also I find it inspiring to see how much you can really do from the comfort of your own seat without having to own a hollywood studio with heaps of expensive equipment. I'm using after effects cs3 and when I open the project file and go to final comp, I get a huge black rectangle instead of sam's head. Does this work in after effects cs3?

hi i have some problems with the tutorial all the trackin stuff is okay but when i make the precomp to relink the stab all the data and keyframes are on the precomp but not on the original (thats when i do alt click on the precomp) so i'm blocked whit it cause i cant make desapear all the black create by the Stab and as well as the liquify doesnt move with the tacked footage. I have AF cs3 Mac G5. Anyone know whats wrong?

Unofortunately im experiencing some problems regarding the PreCompose window: i follow the steps u do on this tutorial but when it gets to precompose the footage in the precompose window it doesnt deselect "leave all attribute in blankcomp" when i click on "move all the attributes into the new composition" but both of the two options remain selected and there's no way to remove the selection from the first choice anyone has any idea on how to solve this little issue?

Andrew, I'm quite impressed by this tutorial and the manner in which you present all of your tutorials. Ahum, I do have a question: I can't seem to lock down the stabilizing (and I have followed the tutorial frame by frame lol), which in turn means everytime I add liqufy or the glasses there is too much movement. I know that you are quite the busy man, but is it possible for you or one of the staff members of Audio co-pilot to explain what it is that I am doing wrong? Any help would be extremely helpful.

A quick question for anyone who knows about it - once you've finished and applied a motion track, is it possible to go back and adjust it? Or does it need to be re-tracked (and all the child commands re-parented)?

Wow, nice tut. Im having 1 problem though. I tracked everything and reversed tracked it, i then added the liquify filter to the vid but it doesnt follow it???

This tutorial is awesome! I really like how easily he explains things, so people with no knowledge of After Effects can pick it up with ease.
I encountered a problem though...I have 6.0 professional and right after I do the reverse tracking part, the image stabilizes but the image quality looks like it's under water or something. Anyone got any ideas what would cause this??? It's even there when I output to .avi or Quicktime.

I dont understand why your using such a complex capture method?
Doesnt it easy to capture the position and the rotation and aply it to a null object like in the crawling bug tut?

This one I liked, it made me mad because I got it the first 2 times and then the second time its not working again! can someone please help, im having trouble at the part where you connects all the Anchors and Position and Rotation...it keeps going into the corner in stead of staying in the middle and going normal like in yours....please help

Hi Andrew, I love this tutorial! I used it for a school production of Scrooge . The part where Jacob Marleys ghost appears, I projected a video of the ghost floating around and messed up the actresses face using liquify and motion tracking. Scared the audience half to death! I believe the motion tracking is only available in the "professional" edition of AE 7.0; in the help file, it says (Pro only) when referencing tracker controls. Hope that helps anyone who needed it.

someone should try that effect with like a rubber werewolf mask, or perhaps more pleasing a realistic werewolf mask, remote controlled to move the mouth, ears and such. Just a thought.

Andrew you are an absolute legend. This tutorial rocks. I was just wondering what the difference was between reverse-stabilization and simply applying tracking data to a nul object. It seems like reverse-stabilization is more work for the same outcome. Cheers mate.

this tut is pretty awesome but there is still one thing i dont really understand: the motion stabilizing... i mean if you reverse stabilize it... arent u basically adding the exact same shakes or cam movements that it had before? can you please make a tutorial only for motion stabilizing... it would be really great because many of us who can afford big cameras and tripods and stands use small ones which do have a lot of shakes... thanks a lot man!

I'm sorry, I have a problem, when Andrew want to copy the settings of one to another (in the second 5:57), he get some options to translate one settings to the other "Expresion position", but, he get the ....Dreamcast logo xd. How did he do this?. Because I don't know, I have the adobe after effects pro 7.0, the same that Andrew use. Pleas, if someone know how did he get that option, I will be thanksfull.

Hey Andrew. I don't know if you got my other message, buy I figured out how to do the demon face warp. Except for there is one little problem. When I reverse track it, my footage still turns out all rotated off the screen when I finish doing it. Do you mabye know what I could be doing wrong?

Hey Andrew. You are amazing at After Effects. But about this demon face warp tutorial, I follwed all the steps with the tracking and reverse tracking, and it would not turn out right on mine. I have After Effects 6.0 Professional, so could that be the problem? Also, I don't get how tracking and reverse tracking make the liquify effect stay on the face. Please Write back.

Here is my video only I had to do this without the tracking motion options. Had to do it frame by frame. I still haven't found anyone to answer why this could be, but I think the trailer turned out well. This is going to be my second film.

Does anyone know why I would have After Effects but not have the tracking controls option? I can change to the motion tracking workspace, but I don't have the tracking control options to track motion. pls help me, if you can. thanks

CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH MAN!!! REALLY REALLY REALLY HELPFUL. I'm 100% sure there's no other site on the www with such an detailed tut. Started AE two days back n was searching for good tutorials. I am making a movietrailer at school learning after effects, and deamons are going to be in it. I dont know if you have seen the series Supernatural but they make a cool eye effect, they turn all black and it looks really real, and i was wondering if you know how to do that? or red for that sake?

hi, i have the same problem that aaron has. when i rightclick my video, the option "track motion" is greyed out, and i can't find that option under windows either. Anyone know where i can download a tracker control palette or how do i fix the problem.

Great tutorial! Only have one question. How do you do when a persons head is coming towards the camera? The face becoms bigger and I didn´t found a great way to track so that the demon face scales up and stays tracked to the face. I had to animate all the masks, frame by frame. AMAZING effect and tutorial. Great thing is, this works in old 5.5 too if you use the mesh warp. You dont get as much control over it but even so..! 5 *s!

Totally awesome technique. Love how many ideas i can achieve just with the Liquify effect. Check out my Video i made, it rips off the new Pepsi Max and I thought it was entertaining and hope yall do as well.
