This was kinda inspirational, and made me realize how much I waste time on crap (I should have stopped on COD4 too!). Besides gaming, I also have family and my business, so time is fairly limited.
You mentioned what it felt to see your own name in big screen, and that's the feeling many of us are aiming for. I've been there now twice, nationally and internationally, and it was like a dream coming true. I was so pround about myself, and thought it would be somekind of a turning point where I start getting project offers easier etc. But it wasn't.
So I guess I'm saying my expectations turned me down. After this goal I need to work twice as hard, becouse now I feel like having a level where I need and want to stick, yet it's still as hard to get projects than what it was before getting my name to the screen.
I really can't even get all the cool stuff from your store yet, as competition is slowing down my own progression.
Any more hints on how to find the motivation and energy? I love this stuff, and I do multiple different things from programming to vfx, but the stress is surely making it less enjoyable than what it should be.
I guess gaming has been a nice relief to this issue - what's better than beating up 13 years old polish kids on a fps game, right?

I owe my entire career to Andrew Kramer. I stumbled on videocopilot.net around 2007 and later found myself with a career in Digital Media. I remember one day opening up After Effects on my older Brother's hand-me down computer. Not too much longer I came across Videocopilot. The amount of knowledge I was able to pickup from Andrew in one short year was the knowledge that propelled me into a career path I never thought I could achieve. From After Effects to Nuke I landed a job as a Render Wrangler at Digital Domain in Venice, CA.
Andrew taught me the baseline skills needed to work in Digital Media. What resolution and pixels are, what an alpha channel is, what a mask is. These foundational skills allowed me to think in abstract ways! I went from an original career path directed towards becoming a Compositor at Digital Domain to falling in love with writing code in languages like Python and Javascript! Artist turned Programmer.
There really is something to applaud here and that is the dedication and commitment Andrew and the Videocopilot team have put into making the world of Digital Media a better place. They've carved out a little piece of the internet focused on educating the next Global (not just Hollywood) Production Artists. There are few resources in this world that have the quality and quantity such as videocopilot. I hope they continue to put out content!
Thanks!

Andrew Kramer is an absolute genius. I show this video to our Creative team for inspiration and it really helps. It goes to show that as long as your passionate about what you do and work as hard as you can; only the sky is the limit. Way to go Andrew and I hope the very best for you and your team!

Hey Andrew Kramer, big fan of your work! So, I'm a young guy, a teenager with aspirations of becoming a film director, with a side pursuit of video editing if I don't make it as a director. Well, I'm a big fan of J.J. Abrams, and really like his style so he's like my idol. Furthermore, I had already been watching your tutorials but didn't even notice you worked with J.J. Abrams, so you guys' work is my inspiration honestly. I was just wondering, what advice would you have for a kid like me to get to your level?

Wow! That was amazing! And so touching story.. I started to follow you Andrew (and VC) maybe in 2006 and I tried to do every tutorial for three years. Then I moved from motion graphics to help companies rank better in Google. Now I decide to make animated video and intro graphics on my own and I came back to roots.
Then I saw this video and I need say that you have also great mentor skills too! What an amazing journey from 2002 to 2015 you have made. And that's separates successful people from other. All the best Andrew!

P.S. I'm sorry for my Finnish-English writing style

I stumbled upon this site when I was searching for people who fly planes that also do video.
After watching this video though - dude, I am totally dumping my unsupportive, mediocre wife, disowning my unsupportive family (my kids want to work in MARKETING LIKE MY PARENTS WTF), and I'm signing up for a Lynda.com account. (I know you're a family guy, so don't worry, I'll get a new family. That's what mail-order and Thailand is for.)
Because all I want to do is animate stuff and be the baddest robot I can be. Well that and cocaine.
Lots of cocaine.

Thanks Andrew! I really got a lot out of watching that and found your words to be very true to life and inspirational. I can really relate to what you said about managing time, I have a part-time small business filming weddings and have recently starting doing commercials. My dream is to eventually make my business full-time and I totally agree it is all hard work! For a while I have wanted to expand my skill-set by learning motion graphics to combine with my filming for commercials. I've recently started watching your tutorials and they have really helped me a lot. So thanks again for taking the time to teach us and share your valuable knowledge.

Just great, so many people in my country should watch this video and take a lesson to make France a little better than the degrading thing we are watching years after years. I'm not a professional on video of movie making , just an amateur, and you've me taught me a lot in a few months. . Your keynote goes far beyond your own job and skills. It can be generalized for any kind of activity. Thanks so much. Claude from Paris.

Yo Andrew hello, greetings to you and the entire team of videocopilot.net !!!
I want to wish you good health to you and your family and the team. Four years ago, i accidentally got into effects and you opened my eyes. Basically I studied and worked in the field of automation and information technology and this is like my hobby. it comes from inside me. I've played with Maya and put 3d models in after effekts. Then I paused.
But now this year I return and I can play a lot and do something spectacular. Thank you for doing what you do. You may not realize it and you think that i honeypot you. But i am really greatfull to you. THank you and have a great year of 2015.

Love your tutorials. There is a ton of stuff in Video Copilot that is beyond me but that's how I usually feel the first time I watch a new tutorial. It gets better the second and third time...As a current affairs video producer, I am asked increasingly for my AE skills. Won awards for editing & storytelling but I really get a kick of imagining how I'm going to really make my next edit sing. That's where your tutorials inspire. Thanks for that.

Andrew,
It is a rare thing to encounter an individual who has the sheer talent you do, the fearless generousity to give it away as you do (and with enough confidence in your craft to full well believe that is ok because you have faith that you will only develop and improve as an artist), the successes you have had, yet still remain so incredibly decent, humble, and what at least appears to me, be driven by integrity and values.
I started watching your tutorials about 4 years ago. I can say that the majority (even if it is small market right now) of work that I've gotten is due to your contribution to the digital arts community.
I had an instructor teach an 'advanced after effects' class, that I paid to attend, walk through your tutorials one by one, and teach them with slightly tweaked modifications.. I spent a full term doing tutorials I had already done (with a much more comical instructor I might add- some of your jokes really help us get through the frustration of it not looking as good as your comp even though we did it exactly like you did, anyone else experience this strange phenomenon?), because you provided a resource that made it possible for us to explore our creative process with tools that quite frankly scared the living day lights out of me when I first got started.
After Effects and your tutorials made me believe I could learn any software if I put my mind to it. Four years ago I didn't know how to appropriately operate a handy cam, but I desperately wanted to wield a lightsaber so I bought one second hand and watched your tutorial.
It was because of this I went back to school, fell in love with photography and video, and today own multiple cameras such as the 5d, a7s, blackmagic, along with movi's, racks, rails, lights, drones, pro audio gear, all of it. Not a rich man, not a wealthy person, but I work as hard as I can and I do my best, and somehow I am provided with the next opportunity to grow.
Your attitude and your persona, who you show us, is inspiring sir. I wish I could take more credit or that I wasn't exaggerating, but it's because of the spark people like Andrew Kramer provide that allowed me to serve in a turnkey role as a DP on my first feature film this summer, or complete a feature length awarded documentary in under 3 years.
I've been noted as an emerging artist in my school, community, and amongst my peers. And how did I get here? In such a short time? People who showed me I could, if I put the work in.
Lifelong VCP customer, and I extend my gratitude to you sir, thank you.
Respectfully,
Tyler

Thank you for this.
It's a very inspiring and insightful lecture.
I work in motion graphics and I'm feeling kind of burned out, so I went into videocopilot for a tutorial and ended up clicking on this lecture instead.
I think this might be just what I needed to hear to keep my motivation going and am really grateful that you can share what you've learned along the way and use to inspire others.
Thank you.

Keep doing what you do best, enjoy every second of it, and keep sharing your talent for many years to come. You're the best inspiration to all of us!
Best regards,
Gal Shemesh

Must admit I had not been to the site in some time (too busy... wink wink) but came over to check out the ELEMENT 2 preview. But damn the feels are strong! Was choking up right with you man.
I recently lost my dad who was also very supportive of all my endeavors. Your tutorials where instrumental in allowing me to make a living off of content creation, i have no doubts about that.
So I just wanted to drop you a line, send you a hug, and wish you and your family all the best.

Dear Andrew,
Although I have a few years on you, I feel like I have grown as a motion graphics designer right along side you. I have been watching your tuts since the creative cow days and can honestly say you still inspire me with your energy for the job. I split my hero worshiping between you and Ryan Giggs.
Your talk made me swell, and with my first baby just a few weeks away, I want more than ever to be better.
You have my most sincere gratitude and I wish you nothing but success and happiness...James

Let's see it from this point of view: Video Copilot is going to be remembered as one of the main points where the VFX industry changed. The new generations of VFX artists use Video Copilot to learn in a fun and quick (and effective) way that none of any of tutorial sites have ever done before, with also a new way of sharing the knowledge. That's gotta be a huge accomplishment. From the other point of view, I think you really have an even bigger accomplishment: you had created a new family who loves you. We saw how you evolved as a person, and that little detail, from what I see, is also the key to your success. That's what also inspire us. We can search for a VFX guide in google and read it but watching your tutorials also makes us feels good (it's quite hard to explain). So thank you for all you've done for us all these years. Thanks a lot, Andrew. Hope you do more of these presentations!

Hi Andrew,
Nice presentation you had over there.
I fully agree with what you've been telling the people over there.
And no matter what kind of job you do (I myself am a software developer), I guess that all these points count for anyone, if you're not passioned, don't do something else now and then, etc you don't keep up with what you're doing. I think this presentation will open up some of the viewer's eyes
I am following video copilot for so many years now and really this presentation gave me goose bumps at the end, you were so right about the people you love, what are we without the ones we love.
You are great! Thanks for all those great videos and those coming up in the future.
Regards,
Vincent

When I started working in a video company, I knew nothing of motion graphics... Your website and tutorials were the inspiration to get me started and to learn new things. This keynote is amazing and I truly hope (and I'm working for it!) to get to your level of expertise. Such inspiring words... thank you!

Hello Andrew,
Thank you for sharing this inspirational speach! I'm following you since the begining and I was giving some After Effect courses in Norway at that time. In all of them, I was using your work as basics for my teenagers
Thankd to your work I wanted to learn more in order to became a better teacher, so I came back to France to finish my studies and get my master degree in Adult education.
Nowadays I use all the technics i could learn from you and your After effect WIKIPEDIA site to make videos for creating E-learnings.
I even had the chance to buy one of your product!
I'm really glad and happy for you that you became an after effect master (or Guru) and still sharing good tutorials.
Greetings from France!! Take care and keep up the good work!
I will come to visit your studio one day!

Nice Job Kramer! You have a really confident voice but you should also be confident with your body - your literally an idol to people - move around be confident don't just let your voice do all the work!
really nice talking about the artist inside though - really resonates with a lot of people. i work for a government body in England and I'm always being told not take a risk and do things neatly - but hey when its good they love it!
Problem solving is completely the main thing - spot on!

Hi Andrew!
best tutorial you've ever made. just so you know, I watched it with my girlfriend: she had no idea who you are, what is it that you do or anything else related to motion graphics. after 10 min in your keynote I had to pause and get her to see it with me...and well, she loved it. so much. "it's so nice because it's not even about design, it relates to life in general" - smiling....honey...that's the thing about good designers, they're good people as well
content, presentation, indiana jones slides.
The love for what you do and the people you care about the most really did came across. Bravo!
ps.
special thanks to the priority / gaming part, heartfelt moment

I take back what I said earlier. This DOES belong in the tutorials section. I judged it before I watched it. It's very educational and EXACTLY what I needed to hear. It's like you were talking directly to me. I procrastinate about procrastinating. And I'm a talented guy! My time management is absolutely terrible! But you've really given me some stuff to think about, but more importantly, you've helped me want to DO...

Keep up the great work man. -Alan

hello andrew, just wanna stop by & say "you're the MAN!" you made my day when i watched your keynote video. you're "sick". I'm inspired with your craft & I'm back again to create awesome projects with no deadlines at all. I've been following your great tutorials for quite some time. I've known you since i started to learn after effects from then i keep watching video copilot websites & i learned a lot of things from tips & techniques. I'm a musician & the reason why i"d like to learn after effects plus your tutorials because i want that all the angles in music will be documented such filming & etc. & i want to present it in a very stunning way. so i want to learn all the techniques & modify it myself through the use of after effects & your products and of course your awesome tutorials. i hope u can help me on this one. thanks a lot andrew that u exist on this planet! god bless bro!

You are truly inspiring Andrew. Thank you for all your words, efforts, and tutorials. I actually have a request for a tutorial. It's something I cant quite figure out how to do.
I cant figure out how to have my actor frozen in place and to be able to pan around them. Maybe have someone walk around them as its panning. Some advice on the effect would be greatly appreciated.

A great essay on striving to do good work in the real world pressure cooker of this mad industry. What is great about VC and makes it stand out, due to yourself and doubtless others in the company, is that it gives and inspires in equal measure. As a film editor now in the latter part of his career, for that read “old guy”, it is just inspiring to see how you got your break. Basically hard work plus! Ditto. I work and have worked in a number of big VFX TV shows in the UK which are now shown world wide and I weekly check in to the VC site, to bring me up to speed on new design, new techniques and just raw artistic inspiration. It keeps the love of the job topped up and helps give me that little bit of an edge on the other guys and girls. As an equal opportunities proponent, you have daughters so you know how important THAT is, I suggest the “Distractions” section should have more than just the still you chose for the talk
As ever excellent work Mr K.

Andrew, that was trully an inspiring and motivational panel. As a young filmaker and student your video tutorials have alwaysed managed to inspire my technical aspect, bring me to a world of infinite possibilities where i can shine and make full use of my creativity. But this segment challenged my motivation and pushed me to pursue every future project in stall with full throttle. so much so that i even deleted my 250 hours 'monster hunter 3' game acount (gaming really does suck the life out of you..)
Your'e trully amazing, and I wish you even more sucess and happiness in the future..

Andrew your work has always inspired me from a young age! I've always been worried of what I was going to be when I grow up and with all that I developed depression. The only thing that held me together was the idea that one day I might accomplish something within film, your videos helped me strive towards my goal. Thanks to your inspiration I have finished my high school "Media Studies" with an A, and I have started my first week of University in "Film Technology and Visual Effects" in Birmingham, UK. I want to thank you for being an inspiration to not only me but everyone else! Much Appreciation!!!?
