I appreciate your tutorials, but I do wish you would tell people at the beginning of the tutorial which effects you're going to be using, so that we don't get halfway through and realise we're unable to finish it.

@ 4:30 you have us delete the left and right channel then SCRUB through it. The Values arent changing when I'm scrubbing through it.

Many thanks for the tutorial, even an armature like me can follow it step by step. Very thorough in deed. At the end, when all the effects are working perfectly, unfortunately there is no sound of my song. Since i am really a very new beginner, i wonder would you be so kind as to tell me why. i saw that you used a wav. format song and i used a m4a. Do you think that is the reason ? Thanks in advance for your help.

i have been a huge fan of Video co-pilot and have learned much but i can no longer view the tutorials because i have old technology (Power PC mac running Tiger) and cannot use the latest adobe flash. Is there a work around?

So I did everything that was stated in the video, but when I rendered it out, all I got was the animation without any audio at all. What am I doing wrong? My audio is in .wav format and is roughly 4 minutes 30 seconds long.

Everytime I try to orbit camera. It wont work. With Andrew, you can see the particle in Z space but with me it wont work!!

I have done everything, but in the end when i play the file the song doesn't come out. When i press (period) button i only could hear the song and when i press (space) i only could see the animation, how can i get both of them playing at the same time? btw my audio file is mp3

How would i use this to maybe, say. Make a light flash around to the beat of a song? get brighter and Dimmer along with the music?

Great tutorial Ak! For anyone who is trying to do this with a longer exert (or an entire song) you may run into an issue where when you create the keyframes from the audio, and you click on the Null it immediately gets deleted. I struggled with this 10 different ways and then just gave up. I created the null and went to get a donut. When i came back and clicked on it, it was still there 
Moral of the story, if your Null with Audio keyframes gets deleted, just let it sit for a couple of seconds before clicking Great tutorial again!

Great tutorial, cant wait to finish my project. But i have a problem. Somehow, when i try to orbit around the particle, it remains as a dot. So that was the part where i couldnt go on with the tutorial. Thank you for your help, anyone.

I clicked convert to keyframes and the second i clicked anywhere it disappeared. eventually I realized that you just need to have enough patience to wait for the audio to finish converting before you click anywhere. usually if you have a small .mp3 it will convert instantly so it's not a problem but with bigger files it can take a while and you just have to not click anywhere until it's done.

Hi. I'm grumpy.
After looking around, i can't seem to figure this out.
I'm running CS5 attempting to use how you described to convert audio keyframes. I add my audio ("The touch" by stan bush) And it will convert just fine alone. I add a Bass and treble effect and it will create the null, but the second I press any button it disappears. Precomposing it doesn't help.

Hi i have i question, it was perfect when i do this thing on winXP, but when i got win7 then particles not work like before ( when I use camera noting happens, particles leave in the place, they do not tick in 1 particle they leave in many particles ) how to fix it? Thanks

Hey Andrew, this is a wonderful tutorial, perfect for some videos I had in mind. One question though:
How long did it take to render? I tried and it came to over 32hours... way longer than all the other stuffs that I had made previously...
If anyone knows how to speed up the rendering for this without affecting how this wonderful animation works, I'd love to hear it. Thanks and Happy New Year (since its already 31st)

I really think that everyone it´s getting attach to all your tutorials, also from others partners.
Need to ask you a question regarding this tutorial. Let’s say that you have a chessboard and you want that every cube works as a meter for each sound (Bass, Treble) moving Up side Down, also that cubes are 3d, so whit a couples of cams can be see it from any angle.
¿Is this can be done?

Need to ask you a question regarding this tutorial. Let’s say that you have a chessboard and you want that every cube works as a meter for each sound (Bass, Treble) moving Up side Down, also that cubes are 3d, so whit a couples of cams can be see it from any angle.

Hay. Great turtorial. I just have one problem, which is the trapcode particular has two red lines in an "x" form across the preview windows and when I render it, they still show in the rendered file. Is there a way to remove these lines??

Hey, I have a question Andrew.
I'm creating a music video and I want the video to flash and shift (cause I'm aiming for an intense look) at every "strong" beat in the song. Or like strong amount of audio level. And I'm trying to come up with some expression to make that possible.
Let's say when its about 30 audio units then the screen flashes or twists.

This just helped me speed up my animation. I used to have to move mouths by hand, now I just need to plug in formulas. Less time = more cartoons. Thanks Andrew.

Pretty cool stuff. For beginers who is not used to expresions i suggest to create a folder where the work will be saved and create a notepad in that folder so that you can write expresions and some tips to remember how to create it in the future

Dude, if it weren't for you and the guys from Creative Cow I'd still be staring at the interface of AE and wondering what the hell I was meant to do! Awesome tutorials, well presented and clearly explained!
Can I suggest that anyone trying to emulate this technique get their hands on the original 'stem mixes' of the track they're using i.e. individual drum parts, bass, vocals etc, and sync separate visuals to each layer of the track. If you make your own music (like me!) then import the WAV's from your projects prior to your final mixdown, that way you'll have freedom and flexibility to have effects that respond to each individual element!

i have just a quick question. graphic intensive projects like these seem to need time to "load" in windows media player for me. its almost like i have the composition in after effects and it needs to do a RAM preview to make it play full-res and smooth. I have a dualcore with a top of the line graphics card. any workaround for this?

much better than the flash computeSpectrum method of matching audio sound with animation... flash computespectrum is alot easier but effects are boring.. little more than moving lines... this AE method is way better than the Flash method

Just a question. I created a composition with the audio waveform effect Andrew showed at the end of the video, and used a 3 minute song as the source. When it comes to rendering the video with audio, is it supposed to have a file size of..5GB? The composition size is 1200x780 in case that makes a huge difference

Extracting audio I never saw to be revolutionatry, Trapcode SoundKeys does it rather elegantly, but essentially does the same thing.
What was really interesting was using Particular as a "spray hose" - I see now Trapcode have just brought out a new plugin which appears to do what Particular, Sound Keys and Andrew's tutorial does, all in a single package called "Form" - check it out. www.trapcode.com

Hey Andrew. I just came today by your site and wanted to tell you these are truly the most complete and interesting tutorials I have ever found. Thanks a lot for your work.
This one is one of my favorites to date. I would like to ask you if it's possible to animate an object on it's Z axis grabbing data from the slider. I supposo, I would have to add a camera, select 3D layer option for layer to animate and so on.
I'm not really shure of how the "linear" function would change though.

Excelent tutorial, i was thinking in make an animated tv logo, that can move or rotate in their z axis, like dancing with the bass o treble from the music.

Hey Andrew..great tutorial..as always..but i've got a little problem..when i try to render the project with the audio output, after some frames of rendering an error comes out :"An unspecified AVI or DirectShow error occured" and the rendering stops...i've tried to change the "format option" in the video output of the rendering menu but nothing change...does enyone can help me please??

That's a great tutorial Andrew. Tired it myself last night with a track from The Go! Team (tons of bass!) and it worked out pretty well. The only problem was that the particles made my puny PC run nice and sloooow.

OK, so this was awesome. I'm totally going to use this. And after a couple of minutes messing around, I figured out how to do the Justin Timberlake effect. I'm not sure if anyone is interested so here's a "quick and dirty."
Do the "Generate Audio Waveform" to a solid like Andrew talked about and then take some video and put it on top of that (in the composition). You would usually want a green-screen video so you could just take the person singing, dancing, or whatever, but you can use anything. After you key out the green screen, use Colorama and set the output cycle to Ramp Grey.
Then, set the trackMatte on the Waveform layer to the Luma of the video with Colorama. You can adjust the contrast on the video layer to achieve your desired effect. Then you could do what you want. That will at least get you the person in motion as a waveform.

after hours of searching I found a nice solution for the following problem (I had in this tut too):
AE 7 (language A) cant import some of the Expressions wrote in language B, because AE wont translate it...
Soulution: Download the "translate Expressions" script

after hours of searching I found a nice solution for the following problem (I had in this tut too):
AE 7 (language A) cant import some of the Expressions wrote in language B, because AE wont translate it...
Soulution: Download the "translate Expressions" script
right here:

Great Tutorial. But I think you should really have a look at the tutorial of Maltaannon. This way you can scale the Amplitute better and you don't have to search the max and min values yourself.

Hey! Pretty clever stuff with that Bass & Treble filter. I always do that kind of stuff in Audition and I never thought that it will actually change the result of Convert Audio to Keyframes. Also, I'd like to say that some time ago I did a tutorial on Convert Autio to Keyframes. What's interesting is that it looks for the Max and Min values automatically and then applies Linear expression. Have you seen it?
