Howdy! Awesome tutorial!

Could anyone help me, I'm trying to add the liquify effect to the mask, but it's doing something weird. The mask disappears and it's a smeared image of the entire photo. If that makes sense. Is there any function I need to do to isolate the mask, allowing effects to be applied to it.

Thanks!

Adapted this tut to a section of a project I'm currently working on - a little different to its intended end product - but I think it works. Check it out:- http://youtu.be/-lnLKqZW_n4

Jeff Morrow
Great presentation and organization. Now get rid of the annoying, "So...so...so," "Basically," and "Actually," and you'll sound just like an adult! And yes, sounding mature helps when trying to market a commercial product. Even to college grads.
Yes

He's just offering a tutorial. He's not there to be judged on how he talks. I don't have a problem with it. I don't think anyone else watching does either. I think you're the one who has a problem. Go to a doctor and get your head checked out.
Adam

Pretty Sure since he's built a visual effects empire he's not lacking in the area of marketing. Besides that he makes these tut's on his own time and becaause he cares about the VFX community. This isnt an oration class..

jeff morrow = douche.
Leo
The main theme of this site is the Andrews travel to maturity. We all keep our fingers crossed. Especially Jeff Morrow for he knows the bitter taste of failure. That's why he wants to genereously share his experience and advice. We all thank you - combined with our best wishes in dealing with your inferiority complex as a tiny staggering and unheard particle within our vast community of interests.
Richie LeBon
Dear Mr Morrow, you are a bellend. That is all.
Gaspar
haha - oh my god Jeff, you are the biggest douche ever. You do know what site you're on right? Do you have any idea the success that is "Video Copilot"? I'm sure he's overly concerned about impressing some dick head college grad with an inferiority complex :p p.s. can you please direct me to your commercial product that you sell? and all your high quality video tutorials? (yeah, I thought so)
Tabor Carlton
Obviously Jeff Morrow has never been on a tutorial website where learning a software program is not only practical, the presenter is actually funny (you have no idea how rare this is) not to mention the tutorials are some of the best available on the internet. And they're free.

Jeff, go have a look on IMDB for Andrew Kramer. Fringe, Star Trek, Super 8... Andrew Kramer can say whatever the hell he wants with the skills he's got. Jeff, did I mention that these tutorials are free?

So... Basically... What I'm trying to say is...'Long live Andrew Kramer'!
Tim Lyons
Andrew Kramer has the rare gift of making it feel like he's teaching you rather than telling you. Its as if he's joking around in the room with you and he's really funny. I know he's not in the room with me, I know that, but...I just wish....

Wow, great stuff but at the same time you fly really fast. Are all the source DVDs this fast too? You skip right over the fact that you select off of Layer:Volcano, and select to Composite Volcano 2. That screwed me up the first time I tried this, if you miss that step and stay on Layer you basically do nothing.
Then later when you're talking about Mask Expansion around 4:02, and Motion Feather. You don't mention that you have to click the M button twice quickly to bring down all four Mask paths. If you don't and just click the M button once, only 1 selection will show "Mask Path" but the other 3 will not. I'm on a Mac so that might be why. This is the second attempt at this and I'm having to watch the screen like a hawk at every single click or any change of the screen. It's working so far on the second try

I don't mean to sound rude, but not one thing you're teaching here is having any sort of effect on my program. Nothing. It would be nice if you would do one more of these, maybe covering it a different way will help.

AE CS4 9.0.3.8
Matt

My mask expansion has 2 coordiniates, the one in this video only has 1 coordinate. And when I take mine to -4 it shows no effect on the sides (when I try on either one of the 2 coordinates).
Saeir
Matt, I had the same problem. This video had no effect on my program. So frustrating. Try this, it worked for me: cover your computer in thick insulation and make sure to block off all of the airflow to the fans inside. Computers don't work right when they are too cool in temperature. The more heat the better. Heat it up and soon your computer will be cooking away so fast you won't believe it.
Matt

Took forever to find this. I kept typing in Animating Still Photo, and the results would show nothing. I typed in Volcano and it pulled up this video. Not sure why it wouldn't have been pulled up with the words I typed in since all the words were there except Photo.

Nice tutorial, the effect is subtly stunning when completed.

As for the focus/zoom relationship you were talking about, its something commonly referred to as "breathing" and only occurs on zoom lenses. What happens is when you change the focus ring or aperture ring, the zoom ring is affected ever so slightly by friction and lens motion, giving you that tiny little change in focal length.

With everybody kissing this guy's ass, it's hard to find a real comment worth reading. Yes, it was great, but (1) it would have been more helpful to just play the dang thing after every change, so we could SEE the effect the change has (instead of just hearing about it), and (2) it blows my mind that after sitting through 35 minutes of that, he doesn't even play the finished clip for us.

thanx a lot for all u do, u're my LIGHT, I'm a real fan!!!

but i got a pb : is it possible to do this tuto without the whisp ? maybe u're expecting us to do it by ourselves, but how could I make it, by filming a friend smoking with a black background ?
would the transparency with the alpha thing (or luma i forget) work ?
maybe it's a stupid question, maybe u're gonna give the whisp soon, maybe not becoz u want to sell your products...

so just to know

have a funky evening and go on with all these crazy devily tricks...

Hey Andrew, Great tut!

Just for fun, when I'm doing the rack focus, I added a little Z rotation on the "Smudgy" lens element - like I'm rotating the lens! (I had to scale it up a little.)

Hey Andrew,

I was looking at a few clips that were posted by a few that commented on the tut. Eventually, I found that you had generated a tut for a missile striking a city a few years back before the website was fully updated.

I was just wondering if you can possibly make another one or post the same tut you had done during that prior moment.

Love your tuts and your sense of humor.

Amazing tutorial, as many have said already.

A quick suggestion, would it be possible to have a direct download of the FLV file from the site, instead of streaming it. I'm in South Africa, and often our internet is a little... shaky, with the streams stopping and timing out half way. Having a direct download would definitely help! Currently I rip the FLV from the cache, and restitch them together to watch them-but it can be a bit of a mission.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

I'm absolutley enthused of the way you let this picture look like a real video. Everytime you put a new tutorial online I first think of a way I could reach the same effect, and after I've watched your techniques and solutions I'm absolutley impressed. I think you should be proclaimed to the "After Effects God" .

the tip to use real camera move was great and will be very useful in other projects.
I HAVE A QUESTION: in the tutorial you said that the real camera move footage was full hd and the comp footage was lower quality.and to compensate for that. you add *.5 is this *.5 is to speed up the comp footage or to slow down the hd footage.

Great tutorial, but it´s a pity that there is no information on final color correction! Can you add some information on that, pls?

Hey Andrew, when you were using expressions to scale down the tracked camera motion, how would you use it to scale up? Say if I tracked SD footage and wanted to apply the track to HD footage?

This one doesn't look very believable.
But it's nice.

Does turning on the motion blur switch really cause the particles to have motion blur? Correct me if I'm wrong but technically it's only a solid with stuff rendered on it and since it doesn't move, turning on the motion blur switch won't do anything. I think you'll need CC Force Motion Blur here
