Tackled After Effects for the very first time with this tutorial! Was actually much easier than I thought, also gave me a first glimpse of insight into effects I'd seen in the past and had no idea how they were done. Thanks for this, for someone who had never touched After Effects in their life I found it really easy to follow along.

I love this! And I have already seen this on YouTube in a video. I was following the tutorial video and I missed something so I started again and then I saw something that I do not understand.
OK, sorry if this has been, mentioned, but I didn't see anything in the comments. At time 5:05 there are four layers and layer (1) is Particle Waves, then suddenly at time 5:07 there are five layers with layers (1) and (2) both being Particle Waves, but I didn't see how or hear that the layer had been duplicated or created. Did I miss something?

I've learned so much from Video Copilot and I appreciate the tutorials so much, but I find that some of the time when I follow the tutorials they don't quite teach you how to really create the animation that is showed in the example. I've followed this one click for click and am left with something that looks like an amateur version of the example. It's good, but it lacks that professional finish of the example.

Good tutorial,
Not as good as the others since this is the 1st I've seen where you leave out a few steps that can be quite annoying in figuring out later for the viewer. For one you duplicate the light comp with no mention of that. You do the same later to another. I caught it early but not mentioning steps leads to confusing people. It also makes a great tutorial, good. Anywho, thanks. It gave me some ideas for an intro before my scuba videos, since it has a cool underwater look.

I'm a little unclear on how Andrew switches out the logos in the end. He says that by switching out the type/logo the rest of the actions will apply automatically, but I must be too much of a noob to understand how to initiate this. Does anyone have a clearer understanding of this concept?

First, you get the error message because AE dousn't identify a numeric value; possible division by zero indicates that the problem is in case of a division, and the only division you have in the code is this:
m = Math.asin(b/c);
thus, the error can appear if c is not a numeric value (or probably zero, but and this can happen in only one
particular case: when the coordinates of the center of the radial blur, are IDENTICAL with the coordinates of the position of the text).
But, looking at the code you wrote, if what you wrote here is exactly the code you wrote in AE, that's "bad"...
And this is the line I consider here:
c = Math.sqrt((a*b) (b*b));

Hey guys.
First off great tutorial Andrew, first thing ive ever done in After Effects and i didnt manage to mess it up.
Anyways, on my compositon screen, after being done, there is a green diagonal line coming done from the top. Its in the small particles layer, because if i move them it follows. Is there any reason why this is there?

I did the Acient Title tutorial and completed it but when I preview it in After Effects it looks okay but I export it and no letters just the light no backgrounds and everything in on see can you help me please?

Just got After Effects and was scouring the Internet trying to find videos on how to use the damn system. This was the first thing that I created with your Tutorial and I can honestly say that I was AMAZED! I had no trouble following your steps and it came out terrific. I just saw these titles used in a Pechanga Resort and Casino Ad in Southern California. Personally i was outraged and didn't think they have the right to steal the exact same effect. But they do have the right. So i applaud Andrew Kramer's great effects.

Great stuff. I just purchased the Series 1 dvd, had to support you some how. I come from a 3D background and it's so great to see some of these "cheats" used in AE. It's really opened my eyes up to the power of AE and how to integrated more in a work flow with my 3D stuff. Thanks again.

I think you missed out one of the most important aspects that is in the version you play at the start but not in the version you make in the tutorial. That is the gold 'shine' that hits the letters from the lightbeams. If you compare in the last few minutes of your tutorial, the one we made and the one with the random greek letters, the greek letters are golden and radiant with light, whilst the one we make is dull and bland.

Yes you are right. this design was used in the tv-show galileo in Germany. It's a really famous show and they used AK's work. I always have to love when I see his work somewhere. I have seen a commercial that exactly like the promo for Action Essetials 2 and it had the same music,too#

In answer to my own question. I couldn't figure out why the output was choppy. So I redid the whole thing. The new project renders perfectly, no problems. So I probably screwed something up the first time.
Anyway, that's the answer to choppy renders. Redo it.

Now,... this tut was awesome, and i followed it and it ram previews beautifully. But when I render it, the output is all choppy. I tried precomposing the layers but to no avail. Can anybody help. I've got a dual 2.8ghz quad core mac with ram to spare. What's happening??

Seriously? You definitely do not need one of his packs. CC Particle World comes with After Effects, if that's what you were referring to. All he used were some simple cement texture images. Google 'cement texture' and you can probably find something that will work fine. Or just go take a picture of a cement wall.

This is pretty cool. What's funnier is that at a screening for 48 Hour Film Project Movies I saw someone using this for their team logo. I recognized it right away. It just goes to show how many people watch and learn from these tutorials.

Well this is odd. A couple months ago I got an idea to make a dark and grungy clip, so I went about setting it up. Not knowing all these little short cuts. I made my third version a couple weeks ago, adding in new text, the added panning animation, and modified the particle field. I did everything in After Effects. Only things that I used was the font, the scratch mark, and the blood stain. I like it.

Andrew, I love your tutorials.. I used to only use photoshop until I stumbled across one of your tutorials, and now I can't get enough of them.. I sit in the living room on my computer, and my wife is on hers.. You talk about your wedding, and stuff, and my wife says.. why did you pause it.. I wanted to hear what he was saying.. lol.. I had to pause it to go and follow you in after effects.. although she says your funny in a geeky kind of way.. I poked her in the eye for that.

So useful. Thank you a gazillion. Any real reason for duplicating the particle wave layer? It doesnt really happen, but in the edit when you first finished the particle wave, the next clip reveals a duplicate. Just wondering. Thank you so much, A.

Andrew Its very cool that you take time form your schedule to make tutorials to show people tips and tricks on after effects. I have been watching them for a short time now. They all awesome!!! except, when you skip steps and one has to take longer figure out what you did. Anyway keep up the good work! Keep making them fresh.. I would like to know if you will do any on making moving backgrounds like CNN ABC CBS MSNBC Ect.

AK, you just happened to leave out some of the details about how you got you original composition (and the Coke logo, etc.) all sweet and glossy and glowing so lovely as it was. I thought I caught some blur and maybe something else hiding in your other comp. I thought a simple glow would do it. But ahh, it wasn't that easy!

Protip:
When adding an expression to animate the fractal noise evolution, instead of adding a number to offset the animation, you could just change "random seed" under evolution options.

Great new tutorial Andrew. I love the way the particles only pick up lighting inside the light rays. I could see this easily integrated into the "Underwater" tutorial for a great underwater particle effect. Thanks Andrew.
