In newer versions, you can find the Opacity map under:
CC Particle World -> Particle -> Opacity Map (Note: It's hidden until you unfold it)
I could not find the presets used, but you can draw the curve by holding down your mouse button in the "histogram". But ideal, but does the trick.

I've known why"x/thisComp.width",but I don't know why"y/thisComp.width";
I think it should be "y/thisComp.height",but the PositionY doesn't follow the Null object.Only I type y/thisComp.width,it works.In my opinion,y is the height attribute of thisComp,so it should be right that y divided by the height of thisComp.
Could any geniuses help me?I'm confusing.Waiting for your answer.

I am trying to complete your tutorial on 3d Stroke Effect. I am using the current cloud version of Adobe After Effects for 2014 on my Windows OS. I am trying to enter the expression for the x position on the particle effect. This is what I entered:
x=thisComp.layer("Null 1".transform.position[0]-thisComp.width/2;

However as soon as I try to pickwhip it to my Null 1 object it immediately changes the expression to:

When i change to lens convew there is no particles showing, and i dont have the abillity to change the birth color ect.

Wow it was so amazing sir, i couldn't help my self to bring in and believe that der was such a thing as this, anyway it looks pretty well all those instructions were so fine and visible, it really helps me a lot, even though it is sometimes confusing when it comes to the CS6 version of adobe after effects but thanks you so much for teaching it all the way, it as a big help for all those who wants to know more about the efter effects like me, may God continue to bless you.,, Good luck

This isn't possible in my adobe after effekts, dont know why but when i'm going to Parent the particle's position with the Null's position, i coudn't parent it position by position, didn't happen enything when i hit "ALT" on the X's position. so i needed to parent the whole particle instead.
I tried to parent the whole particle with the null objekt but it was just wierd, it followed the X's and the Y's position but not the Z's position.
Im running in Windows 7 and with the Adobe After Effects CS5.5 is that a problem?

Great I'm finished but how do I make the particle cast light on the other layers. I know I could just add another light and animate it but is there another way. Have I missed something

In fact, that sounds like a great idea for a product. You could produce a preset similar in function to Particular but charge considerably less. Even if it is slightly gimped in features, it would probably be something the budget minded would consider. The main reason I don't have Particular myself is I just can't afford it (I just bought AE and Sony Vegas).

When I change the particle radius, velocity, and gravity, my particle disappears. I can\'t see it at all on my screen.

Hey, great tutorial. My problem is that my particle producer moves around when I move the null object, but there is no vapor trail. It seems the particles just cling to the producer location as I move it through time. Why is that?

hello, i am using cs5 and this is my first project i am working on. now my question is i can not make my solid while have that wiggly tail affect. it does wiggle but i can not make it have the following comet tail. i did manage to find the wiggly affect on the right side under effects and presets only because i have no idea how to write in the bar's ''wiggly3,100'' so i dragged it to my solid white. can u please explain to me how did you write in the box or make the tail affect.. thanks. oh and i also tried the alt+click on position but it will not let me on null only on x,y,z on solid white.. i hope u understand what i mean thanks..

If you want, you can just visit the AE basic training tutorials Andrew has posted it helped me out, and it has some great tips/ tricks plus it all around teaches you many standard stuff about AE

Ah man. Same problem as below. I pickwhip the expressions to the null objects values, and the null is in 3D, and I get that annoying error message.

imma poor AE user. I cant afford Particular.. Im using CC particle World.. u can do everything with particle world.. Guys, Try negative velocity, add glow and turbulence distortion to ur solid.. works pretty fine for me..
I solved my fat line issue!!!
DUmb... Adobe CS4 AE showed that my Position X Y Z in Particle World's Producer as 0. But it was actually 0.25 when i click it..

Just curious...The light that was inserted into this comp, can it be parented to the null object as if it's the 'glowing head' of the tracer? I would love to try to have the main light of the scene move around the room (as if it's coming from the tracer)

Hello Andrew,
I'm using AE CS4.
When I add the light to my 3d room, the light does not affect the color of the walls--I'm using the same light settings:

whats the problem here?

For those whose been having problems with the coding, you have to end the code with a proper ";"
If you don't the engine believes that your code somehow is supposed to continue when it's not.

Thank you for your tutorials, they are not only educational, but fun to watch. Although I suspect the "super-duper" exciting music you use at the beginning of every tutorial is the reason why. So, yeah, just to let you know... we're on to you man.
One thing though, you forgot to mention how you made the ball of light... I'm baffled by how you connected your glowing ball to the beginning of the particles.

I figured it out, thanks for all your non-help! I'll post the solution in case anyone else had the same problem.
It seems like after effects does not realise the values are already set to 0, in Radius X, Y, Z. So just go to them and move the values away from 0 and then back to 0. Voila!

You need to Alt click ON THE STOPWATCH (it's an image of a little white clock). I clicked all over the place until I saw a popup and I happened to see Alt click in it.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the wonderful video. However, when the video gets to around 4 minutes and you turn everything down to 0, you have 1 particle. This is not my case. I have many particles. I am using the newest After Effects. Help appreciated.
Oh and Michelle, when I have the particle type as line, when I turn it down to 0 it disappears but when I chose another particle type, say lens convex, I can see the particle. Good luck!

Hello! sorry for my english). I try to make this tutor. And i find some problems. On 5th minute Andrew set a CC particle world and set producer and physics at zero. And then he show what particle stroke is builded up. But when i repeat from Andrew i can't see stroke. If only do not set to zero velocity, for example if i set velocity 0.01 then i see stroke. But in this tutor velocity 0. why it's happened?

Hey these tutorials are amazing and I just started to use After Effects. The one problem I am having is when you explain to alt click for the positions to be the same for the Null space. Nothing happens when I alt Click. I am on a Mac Pro machine

I have the same problem as everyone else. I can see a single particle when everything is turned down to zero, but it's when I use the expressions to link the particle to the null object that it dissapears. I'm using AE CS4 and every other tutorial seems to work fine except this one. I've linked things before to null objects by using that same expression, so the expression works but something happens to the particle. Hope someone manages to figure it out.

If i change the particle to Lens Convex it will go to a really strange place..
Also when i do this an a new project.. i can't see a thing when i put all the settings to zero..
What can i do, I'm just a beginner, so maybe it sounds stupid..

Great tutorial Andrew.
Now if anyone wants the camera to follow the particle from a distance you can do the following.
Create a new expression at the camera position and add this:
x = thisComp.layer("NullObject".transform.position[0];
y = thisComp.layer("NullObject".transform.position[1];
z = thisComp.layer("NullObject".transform.position[2]-800;
[x,y,z]
Where at z the "-800" is the distance you want it to be from the particle and "NullObject" is obviously the NullObject which the particle follows.
Now if anyone wants the camera to follow the particle from a distance you can do the following.
Create a new expression at the camera position and add this:

guess this was created in 7.0.1 AE and I have CS3 so it has to convert, but complains that CC Particle World is missing, is this AE's particle or 3rd party.

Hi Andrew I have been watching a lot of your tutorials, but this one on 3d stokes and using the particle world is just not working. The expression that you have given just don't work and I'm not getting that cool trail, when moving the Null object around. Is there another way to use the expression or another to simulate a similar style.

I've been doing your tutorials to learn after effects, and I have to say that you are the best teacher online that I have ever witnessed accross all programs.
I have a small problem with this one though. I can get it to work every single time when I do this by itself, I can't get it to work on existing projects.
Do the calculations have to be different for PAL/DV screen sizes? The particle is still connected although it moves only extremely slightly.

I've been doing your tutorials to learn after effects, and I have to say that you are the best teacher online that I have ever witnessed accross all programs.
I have a small problem with this one though. I can get it to work every single time when I do this by itself, I can't get it to work on existing projects.

It's tremendously well-done! By the way, I am no good in expression and thus, is it possible to manually control movements of the 3D-stroke effect in AE rather instead of relying on expression?

I'm trying to get more control out of the POINT null by parenting it to another null which I would offset & rotate to get corkscrew/ circular effects, but the expression wont allow it to work when parented. Is there perhaps a workaround?

I think everybody got chance to see the tutorials...but for me bad luck..my internet speed is 128kbps and its too slow to watch such a high quality videos.......Wish I could download..

thanks! really cool tutorials here ... the only problem with this, is that, because the solid layer is not 3D, you cannot have it cast a shadow ... that's a shame, any other way i could have a shadow from the moving particles onto the floor?

I can nearly swear that there is no Z coordinate for my Null object, so the whole bit worked until the point where the expression linked them. You said you use After Effects 7, so I was wondering if it was because I'm using CS3? Nevertheless, a great tutorial! It's great that you make these for everyone to see, and, not to mention, they're all free...Well, most of them anyways.

i have done many of your tutorials, really amazing,
but this is the only one that i can't seem get to work so far, the only thing i can think of is that something has changed in the most recent version of particle world, what do you think?

good tutorial. i had the same problem of the "invisible" particle. but i went ahead and did this:
"RE-ENTER the Postion to "0", even if there is a "0" in Producer -> Radius X, Y ,Z. This will reduce the Particle to a small line like in the tutorial."
-i actually did this step 2 or 3 times while adjusting Birth Rate and Birth Size until the particle looked like the tutorial.
now if I could just change the color of the 3D Particle Stroke cuz it's coming up PURE BLACK!!!?

But i've got the same problem like the others, I've downnloaded the CC-Particle World from the HP für free. Don't know how to deaktivate the green lines, or is it, cause it's for free?

as the result of my previous post, no formula would probably solve this, but if you do want to make a widescreen edit of this,
make sure you use a "square pixel" composition
that's that... this is an awesome tutorial by the way, definitely going to use it for school

Same problem as "brazil canada" and others, when I turn everything down to zero, everything disappears, I dont have a single particle like you do.

Hey, remember to not enable 3d on the particles solid, as the 3d effect wont work.

Good tutorial, but you neglected to mention how you made the position of the particle interact with the room lighting in the example you started with. (A very important effect for believability.) It's pretty obvious to me that you probably just parented the light you created to the null layer, but perhaps it won't be to some. Keep up the good work, I really enjoyed the AE basics tutorial series.

I like this tutorial, but I don't really like it if you say "with built-in tools from AE7" and it's not the truth
My CC Particle has the same green lines (X) on the screen. It seems to be not free... so would be helpfull if you say/write that somewhere so I don't have to watch the video and wake up like "huh... made for nothing"

Hi, first time commenter, long time viewer. I love your work! I am a huge fan.
I am having a little trouble with this one and was wondering if you know where I went wrong.

is 6.5 the correct version to order ($49) - or do i need the HD version ($249)

Hi Andrew, the first time I would like to say a lot of thanks. But I have a quastion. How can I make this stroke in real 3D? I can't do that this stroke move around a object. Example if i want that this stroke moving around a text (3D layer), I cant do it. The text is always in front of the stroke. If I change the "particles" layer to 3D layer I can moving it in front of the text, but I it is always there, and i cant make a motion. I hope you understand my problem. Sorry but my english is not really good!

Just a quick question - If you wanted it to wiggle and then draw a specific shap (logo for example), can you easily do this with the same null object, or would it be better to have the null with the wiggle expression finish the same frame that another one starts (to draw your shape)?

Great tutorials.I love them but i have a problem whit my AF 7 Pro.When i want to drag or import something in it it just Not Responding and then it crashes..If somebody knows how to fix it it will be much apriciated.

Strangely this is the only tutorial of yours that keeps giving me problems, and I saw no keyframes on the project file version...
On the one I did from scratch, it sometimes looks fine before I ram preview it, but when I use ram preview it looks different than what I see from scrolling through the effect in realtime. It seems kinda complicated just to get a simple cool effect, I hope someone will develop a new plugin at some point to animate this way ^^;
