When working with lights be sure to change the composition to Adaptive Resolution instead of OpenGL. You may also try using a Spot Light instead of a Point Light.

I follow this step by step in AE CC, I get to 2:54 where you turn "accept lights" off on the BG layer and my text doesn't poke through slightly on the top like it does here- it just turns the whole solid white, then when I switch the transfer mode to multiply, it does nothing at all... the solid and text are all just white with no light... Any ideas?

Hi,

I got this problem, i downloaded your project on my ae cs3 and shadows are missing, i have looked into material option it's on, but still, what can be a problem?? thanks for response.

I use After Effects CS6. When i motion track the footage it makes a camera. The light will not stay at the same point because the camera move... What can i do that the light ignores the camera and stay at the same point? Sorry for my bad english

All of your tutorials are great and I've learned a lot from them. One question about this one, I've got the 3d shadow from text, but I can not get it to follow a Null object with motion tracking. Is this possible?

Great for text, but how about for comps? I noticed that once you turn the text into a comp, the shadow disappears and the options for accepting shadows, etc are no longer available. Is there any other option than duplicating then adding a linear wipe?

I like this effect its used a lot in newer TV shows and I was also wondering if this applies for Text over videos and if it applies to something like that. I want to put this over video. If I watch this another time I may know it word for word. Should I just try it with video and tweak accordingly?

See, I've got After Effects CS3 (so it shouldn't be some issue with an old version) and I just don't get any shadows. I tried making my own at first, didn't get shadows. So I downloaded your project file and tried that: no shadows. Sort of strange. Every other tutorial of yours (well, all that I've tried, though for some I miss a plug-in) works fine. Any solution to this problem?

I too had the same problem with shadows...
When i switched off 'Accepts Lights' the shadow went away too...
but it worked great when i switched to a Spot Light!!

First of all: Andrew you really are the best (well, at least when it comes to tutorials.) I've really never seen any tutorial that even comes close to your level. They're clear, you don't mumble, give a lot of extra information and the jokes. Oh, and you've got an awesome voice which sort of helps to make something that's in essence boring (well, yeah.. Tutorials don't give any euphoria or anything and I usually find them really boring (probably cause most people who make tuts always mumble and sound bored themselves and reading isn't very exiting either of course), a fun experience.

Im doing my final project at university in motion tracking, its an opening sequence for a film, I wanted to composite 3D titles onto the footage. What I was wondering was, can the principles used in this tutorial be applied for moving footage, as the tutorial is done with a still? Also, would you recommend using AE for the full of this project, or do you think it would be better done using 3D software and Motion Tracking software? Thanks for any help you can give!

My problem with this tut is that no matter what I move (lights, camera, action)I can't get my shadows to meet up with my text! If I bring the text down to the floor...my shadow disappears! I tried different fonts and that made no difference. Is there something I'm missing here? Other than this, it all works great!!!

Hi Andrew! Eversince I've learned about videocopilot, i made sure I'm not missing any of your tutorial. I was wondering if you could also make a sample tutorial from the bullet training. Like how do you integrate 3dmax with AE. Or, what file format should be used in rendering for AE to read the alpha channel of the rendered movie in 3D max. Many thanks!

There definitely is something wrong. There aren't even shadows in the project files. When I turn the transfer mode to multiply on my background layer in my own project, the shadow goes away... What's going on?

I've had this problem before... Anyone know how to fix?
When I turn accepts lights off on my floor, it wont accept shadows anymore.

Hey! Great tutorial!
I was trying to follow along, but there was a problem.
As soon as I switch off "accept light" on the solid, the shadow disappears as well.
I even tried it on the project file from this tutorial and it didn't work.
I'm using CS3

hey, andrew..
great tutorials, but i cant go through the multiply mode part..
when i made the BG layer 'multiply', there was no shadow casted on it..
i check again and again, everything was the same as your tutor..
guess i'm wrong somewhere but if you have any idea where to look at, feel free to mention it.

This tutorial doesn't work with my AE CS3 and I don't know why. I made all that you say but when I set OFF the "accept light" in the white solid the shadows desapears. Do you know what can I do to fix it?

What type of camera/lens did you use to shoot the background image? The lighting / d.o.f. looks really strange but very cool.

This tutorial is totally awesome. Quick question though...I'm having some problems. As soon as I click "ACCEPT LIGHTS OFF" on the BG Layer, my shadows disappear and this kills the whole thing. Anyone know why this happens?

I have a question about this tutorial though. Is there a way to make the text, when looked at an angle, to look thicker? What I mean is, can we make the text look like it was carved out of bricks? (I care less about the texture, and more about making the text look thicker rather than thiner).

This could be really nice if you had someone acting on a greenscreen and key it out and adding it to the scene and adding a little shadow to it so it gives a realistic look. It's kinda more believable.

Thank you Andrew! It seems like a great tutorial, but I just can't get it to work! When it comes to the part when I'm supposed to turn the "accepts lights - off" on the BG-layer, the shadows just disappears. Do you have any idea of what I'm doing that might be wrong? /Erik, Sweden

Another great episode....and great looking too. I agree, all street signs should be projected onto the street. No more looking behind bushes and trees to see what street you are on.

You know what I love about your tutorials Andrew, is everytime without fail you show something new to me. It may not be a complicated thing in fact it may be downright basic but nevertheless something I managed to overlook on my own, such as a light's shadow diffusion option - simple stuff, but not always seen or understood.

So when is the next batch of Plug ins coming out? I know you just released Twitch not too long ago but I want more. And I'm sure I speak for the rest of us. Plus it wouldn't hurt your pockets any. Just a thought, If you do a youtube search on Fox reptilians you'll find a cool video effect I'd love to be able to do. Looks like your cable is going out and the pixels are mixing and growing.
