Getting there + New Interviews!

Hey what's up! Yes, the pressure to make cool new stuff continues but yesterday I sat down with Chris Do to discuss work, life and the difficulty trying (and sometimes failing) to balance many ambitious projects at once! We also talk about Plug-ins, projects, intercept and my goals for 2018!

The truth is, I should have been more open and honest these passed months. The truth is, there really is lot of pressure to make cool things and I've been struggling with it.

All I wanted to do was SHOW you what we have been working on and not tell you about it. I really miss the fun side of VC and I'm working on bringing it back for good!

Here is another bonus interview with a mini-tour of Video Copilot with my friend Andrew Price!

Andrew said in this post : "The truth is, I should have been more open and honest these passed months."
Well... the truth is that he is not more open and honest because for videocopilot's fans actually 2017=2018

He also said : "I really miss the fun side of VC and I???m working on bringing it back for good!"
Really ??? Andrew, are you serious ???
In 2018, only 13 posts here and 2 tutorials (one is on 2 parts) and you think that you are bringing the fun side of VC back ???
Waou.
I can't wait for 2019 !! It will be very fun !!

So now when the show is over. Do you and your team have some time over for an explanation?

I just do not get where you have hidden all up to date information about the connection between Element 3D and Audio React. Can´t find any usable info about that and most video tutorials are from older versions of Element 3D, meaning that I have no idea about where the "displacement" tool is placed in 1.6.

I sent some e-mails but actually don´t get any answers!

Yeah, I learned a while back that most clients will tolerate being late with a project. But, they won't tolerate a lack of communication. Anway, I don't know how you do it all with 4 kids.

Now, hurry up and finish the new Action Essentials... I need smoke plumes! (Real ones... not the obvious CG ones that are out there. haha

Maybe it's just me but I was shocked when the interviewer didn't follow up by asking if everything was okay with his daughter.

No apologies nescessary imo!

We´ve gotten so much amazing content and tutorials for FREE over the years, that it has been totally decisive for me at least, to be able to climb to a level where I can make a living out of motion graphics. I couldn´t have done it without VC and AK. And with the awesome Element plugin (at a bargain price compared to what you get), my coworkers think I´m some kind of 3D wiz, although it´s actually kind of easy thanks to the great tutorials, and an interface we´re already familiar with from AE. Well, maybe easy is an overstatement if you´re making something complicated, but very comprehensible at least.

That being said; every tutorial doesn´t have to be so in depth. I like shorter ones too, like the genius little quick tip on "Star Trek Into Darkness Title Design" at 5:20, on how to "fake" advanced looking particle systems, something I used in my latest project. But I´m happy for any kind of upload of course!

Great interview! Fantastic to see that you're still so passionate about the work you guys are doing over there. Been a student since the beginning. And I DO remember Real Clouds stock footage product! LOL... Hey it was ahead of its time! Before HD

Thanks for everything you all do. It pushes me to keep growing. I am so grateful!

God dammit I've felt the exact same way about bit depth so many times! I hate when I have a whole set of titles in my project that could easily be 8pc, but I need a separate project for the end logo (or whatever) because I need some HDR-ness for that one shot. It happens to me all the time!

I'm not quite sure something as official as a written apology is actually required (although a few apologies from several people who posted might be more in order).

I've learned more from Video CoPilot and have been energized to do creative work than via any other training platform. The odd post and tutorial will always be welcome of course
I cannot begin to imagine the workload and pressure you must be under not only from work commitments but also as a father of several young children. Great to see a post however. And if you're ever in Ireland you'd be made feel very welcome! I'm sure they'd love to have you speak at Offset - Design conference held over here every March. I'm sure they've been in touch already.

Great to hear from you and best of luck!!

hey.. what's up this is Andrew Kramer from videocopilot.net ....lol, really miss that intro. I'm glad you're back. I've been waiting for your help. I tried importing models from c4d into element 3D where most of the models were designed using the spline warp tool but they're not visible in AE. I tried giving them separate materials but still... hope you can help me out please..

I'm surprised you don't have a digital media producer who's job it is to be in charge of new content and frequent posts. You as the 'boss' can't be expected to be the one to post all the time. They can be in charge of collaborating with you to make sure there is new content and, it can be way more than just tutorials. Film making and digital effects are about more than one thing, and video copilot has infinite potential. Good luck!

Andrew, keep on keeping on. There's a lot of motivation to be taken from these interviews. I especially loved how you were pulling all-nighters editing video for your high school's football team for free. The magic starts when you learn for yourself what you are capable of and it usually comes by doing something you are not paid for. That said, any word on E3DV3 release date and new features...?

Andrew,
I can't even imagine how truly busy you are, and I hope you get the time you need to be with your family. I appreciate your apology and am very glad you shared your struggles with us. Really, all of us that have been complaining about your disappearance just wanted a bit of communication from you. I really hope you can find the time to regularly update us, even if it's just a 3-5 min video explaining whats coming or what's going on with Video CoPilot. Yes we are your customers but also your friends, we will support you in your efforts... just don't shut us out.

I think the most important thing is semi-frequent updates. Not every tutorial has to be super in-depth or completely different or mindblowing, people like hearing your voice and way smaller videos/tutorials/tips/wips/updates are also greatly appreciated. Call them snack-sized videos or whatever but just try to update a bit more frequently and you'll also feel better/less pressure yourself (not that you owe us anything or deserve to feel guilt. These things can just grow into these huge blobs in ones mind that eventually prevents you from doing anything. Speaking from experience, perfectionism can kill all creativity Just know people respect, accept & like way smaller updates as well.

In any case just great to hear what's up and looking forward to many more updates in 2018!

No need to apologize to anyone! If anyone is complaining they are selfish and stupid. Your success is everyone's dream and to not focus on that would be self destructive. Although I check the website everyday day after day hoping something like this pops up I do understand! Keep working hard and can not wait to see what VC drops next.

I have to be honest, I've bought quite a bit off Andrew and VCP, he is a HUGE influence to the motion graphics/VFX world, but, he's spread himself very thin here over the last year, but that's just a testament to his creative talent and the demand for his input into VFX in the movie world (their gain is our Loss, unfortunately) I hope for everyone's sake (most certainly mine) that he can get back to a more balanced and regular stream of output, certainly for himself and his employees, not least the hundreds of thousands of fans/paying customers, he is without doubt a creative and inspirational genius, and without him and his unique infectious humour, life would A LOT duller, if people have missed
you Andrew, that's a huge compliment to your individual and creative presence, we've missed you bud.

The mere idea of apologizing tells how much of a great person you are. I don't agree with anyone who demands your presence just because they bought your stuff, I am sure there is a support team who follow up with the purchuses or whatever is related to buying the products, and you did a great job by documenting and giving extra awesome tutorials about them. Your presence and your awesome tutorials, who I still check on the website for on weekly basis hoping to find a new update even after 9 months of disconnection is a Bonus from you, and people have to understand that.

You're a great modest person, and I hope to see more of your vidoes, or new products in the near future.
Wish you more and more success man

Andrew! (apologies... second post without most of the typos )
It is such a pleasure to hear from you and great to know that you're doing well! There was a huge void in the field of VFX without your cheerful voice and friendly smile on a regular basis. I too was concerned about you and hopeful that all was okay with you and your family. I for one definitely missed you. Your post made my day! Welcome back to a group of people who absolutely love you and truly love the many talents and insights you have shared with the world. It's definitely hard work and the tasking is enormous. Let all of those dissenting voices be silent! You have already made such an incredible and life-long contribution to all of us with everything you have done and accomplished. As life moves forward, remember this: Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Most importantly, take good care of yourself and your family... the rest will certainly take care of itself. A heartfelt THANK YOU for everything you have done and for all of the wisdom and knowledge that you have imparted to so many! Everything that you are able to share with us going forward is simply "icing" on the cake, a cake that you have so expertly baked! Very best wishes and most importantly, continue to have fun with all that you do. The truth is: Life is a journey... not a destination. You are a legend in your own time. Keep up the great work "Mr. Wizard", and stay balanced.
Best wishes,
Bill

You know what makes VC so great. It's your self-giving. The days and nights of your life spent to share content, plug-ins, tutorials, 3d models, and affordable ways to make dreams happen. A great debt is owed to you and you have no one to apologize to. I am a father of 3 and I can firmly say that without VC, I would not be making a decent living to provide for that family without your guidance. Gratefulness is all I have for your company. Do all you can, pour your heart into it, but your service first is not to us trolls, but it is to you and your family. I appreciate all of your hard work Andrew and thanks for all of the exciting tutorials!

I just wanted to say thank you so very much. Over the years I have been able to continue learning and applying what you have taught/shown in your tutorials. I only have need of my After Effects skills once maybe twice a year when my company wants me to magically pull something out of my...ahem, hat. I have been able to watch your amazing tutorials and reimagine them into my projects. Now, my kids are getting into this world and I tell them there is no better teacher for the cool things After Effects can do than Andrew Kramer. Thanks again.

Dude, don???t worry about it, what you???ve built here is such an incredible resource, anything else you publish here is a bonus. Honestly your tutorials and products have enabled me to learn how to do things I???ve never dreamed, and has transformed my career (and given me a side business as well!). I???ve gone from someone who was ???good??? at photoshop and PowerPoint, to someone who has completely evolved the way his department handles business, training and communication. And this is in a large way due to the fun I???ve had learning on this site and purchasing your products. The only thing I ask, no, beg, is that you give sufficient warning if you ever decide to discontinue supporting this site. I continue to review tutorials before every major project and the only fear I have is showing up to this site one day and finding that it???s gone. Knowing you???re still alive from time to time is good too. So let the ???no update??? posts continue!

Welcome back Andrew,
the way I see it (as a person who went from a few hours of work, to a harder schedule) when you started all these, you were still amateur. You had plenty of time and passion and you were teaching us your experiments in order to learn. Now you have a great company which demands much more effort and time. You still got your passion for vfx but you also have a family that needs your time too.I know man I'm in the same position. From my perspective you don't have to be apologetic . On the other hand, as a customer , I still don't think you have to keep updates in a regular base if a product works fine. And you don't have to spend time making tutorials if spare time is not an option. But if I were you, I would post a small portion of the projects I'm working on. Just for the people who support VCP , it's interesting to see your work and inspiring. Don't get me wrong , but some of us would also be concerned of you as a person if not showing up. We are not fans of you. Just inspired artists who just need a post now and then (maybe just an image) to see that you are working on something and we won't disturb you.

P.S: this is just my POV as a person who manages a small vfx studio and struggles to spend some time with family.I'm not trying to praise Andrew. Mr Kramer is like a mentor to me. Not someone who owes me. Feel free to disagree. It's your POV.

I don't know about anyone else but I don't believe you owe us anything much less apologies. If anything, we are indebted to you, the wealth of knowledge, tools and even the example you set is far and beyond enough to warrant much needed time for you to allocate yourself where you see fit. While I do miss the semi-regular schedule of hilarious and wildly creative solutions for disintegrating Sam, I'm just as pumped for you as an artist and watching you reach the point a lot of us aspire to. You just keep plugging away man, we aren't going anywhere, find time for you and your family and the rest will come, many thanks and looking forward to whatever you got coming down the pipe.

Hey Andrew, after following your site for over 10 Jears, its the first time i leave a message. I understand every single word you say! because I felt in the same issues. Doing Tutorials for FREE and fighting with the dayli work that pay´s your bills. Growing company and learning to "let go" things to other hands, combined with the quality you expect - this is hard.

If you do Tutorials for free you must have another job to get payed - If you are good, of course you get offers from Biger productions (in VC case Startrack & Starwars Fringe - etc.) and you have to take that to do the next steps even for your community to keep things going.

Keep a good hand in managing your goals for your company and comunity, i really know what you are trying to handle now. All the best

Hello Mr. Kramer.
Thank you for contacting us now. How do you say in Germany: This is not "gentleman like"! The people here were very worried. Something bad may have happened or you and your family can take a break for a year on a quiet island. ) We would even treat them. But nothing to write is not very customer friendly. My opinion! Sorry!
But it's all good and they're back. Thank you!

Hey Andrew!

I've been a follower of yours since your early tutorials, bought most of your products and honestly I don't think you should apologize at all, you've done so much for the community and you need to take a break whenever you want man. Great interview!

Andrew you have done amazing work but the best thing you could ever create is waiting for you at home. time is your enemy and they are only little for so long. Take your time, spend it with your kids. get some sleep. we will be here. well some of us.

Hey Andrew,
We all kinda knew what was up. It's a struggle trying to fit everything into time manageable segments. You have kids, a wife, a kick ass job both on feature films and with VC. We get it. Don't be discouraged. You have given a lot to those of us who have viewed the tutorials, bought the plugins and given us a sneak peak into your life. I have a great job because of the information I have learned from you and countless other creators, as do tons of other people. Keep pounding away and keep grinding. We respect you and your decisions. Thanks for VideoCopilot. Now...Don't ever let it happen again!! lol

Nice to see you decided to post even here Andrew, not only on instagram.

I think you really missed an opportunity not posting the announcement of these two videos first here... but it's equally nice to see a sign of life here on VC site.

I had already seen both (and really dug more the one with Blender guy Andrew Price

Hope you will keep the momentum and keep posting something here on a regular basis... doesn't necessarily mean tutorial or updates on products... even a joke, just to let people know that you care as they do.

Thanks again for taking the time to post.

Hahaha. He's back!!!

Not really kids. He just uploaded a couple of rambling dad joke filled interviews where he gives no concrete updates on plugins or tutorials... or shows any kind of understanding that he's left a community of customers without any communication for over 9 months.

I will now step aside so everyone can fall over themselves for these stale breadcrumbs.

Jack, I deserve that... I created this situation.

In the top interview I do try to explain some of the real challenges over this passed year...but at the end of the day, stuff has to get done and I'm working on it!

Geez. Ever hear about people being busy? If you work in this industry for any period of time... especially freelance or running your own company, you'll quickly realize that schedules fill up quickly. And for those who do good work, and are in demand, schedules freeing up for extracurricular pursuits is a nearly impossible feat... for anyone who is successful, that is. Having a family on top of that will always take priority during any free time. And although I'm sure Andrew would love to spend more time giving you guys free stuff, it's ungrateful comments like that, that show a lack of understanding the reality of trying to do all this.

Andrew, we have already heard this kind of message in january 2017 with your goals and projects for the year... and almost nothing happened.
With all the respect i've got for you (big big big respect), we feel abandoned. Maybe you'll disappear again because you're going to have a lot of professional proposals.... All we need today is not interviews, but something, a real thing, to show us that you are really back. Not for few days or for few weeks. We need to believe. We need to see that Videocopilot is alive.
PLEASE.

9 months is one pregnancy, lets see what will be born by this!

Welcome back, Kramer.

Because of your tutorials, now I am pro motion graphic artist that charge so much, that I can buy a Ferrari. Second hand. With no engine, tyres...

Andrew, It's okay if you have no time at all. Family is most important. Top1. Everybody knows that.
You just shouldn't feed us with informations, that are not 100% true. Specialy what MickA wrote about 2017. When I realized, those words was not true, I immediately assume that these words right now are just as the same. You taught me that.
I won't lecture you about time management (in my country people say "you caught too many birds with one hand" (regarding to new plugin, intercept, assets, etc.)), because it's not my job (and you have nice presentation on you yt about it), but do you feel urge to promise something that you cannot deliver? I... I don't believe you, man And sadly, but I'm not waiting for intercept anymore.
I feel that there will be no new posts here in a few months. And it's also sad.

Lets be honest, Video Copilot is Andrews baby, not ours. He's made incredible videos for us in the past and has never once asked for anything in return. I'm just stocked to hear about whats going on in his world.

You're awesome Andrew! No matter what anyone says here, ultimately we're all going to come running straight back to VC anytime you have something to show. I still check here almost daily for some inspiration and to have a crack at another video.

Thanks for everything you do, you're the legend!

Jack, you are a troll. He has over one hundred free tutorials posted and I am positive you have attempted none of them. Just waiting for more free content to skip over? Ever used the saber plugin? Ya its amazing, oh and guess what, its free also. Go free load somewhere else. Ungrateful poser.
