Free Star Wars Model Pack!

Happy Star Wars day! To celebrate our love for Star Wars we are giving away a sweet collection of 3D models that we built so you can learn to create your own visual effects! Our goal is to show you tips for Lighting, Rigging and animating so you can learn to create exciting visual FX too!

These are not just some piece of junk models, these models are HD quality with detailed 4K textures! Plus they render fast inside Element 3D! How fast? Fast enough for you!

We had a blast creating this collection and we hope you will have fun playing with these models too!

Just to be clear, we do not mean to imply any Star Wars endorsement or sponsorship, Star Wars was a huge inspiration to my visual FX education and we know it has inspired many others to learn about visual FX.

Note: All scenes rendered inside Element 3D V2!

It's called Chromatic Aberration. (Not that that's going to be any help!)

    Hope this helps.

Every time I try to upload these models, After Effects gets either an error or it crashes completely. Anybody having these issues with Element V1? It's not my system because 3DS Max and Blender work perfectly fine without any render issues. It's only Element V1 that's giving me the problem. Should I upgrade to V2?

I know I'm not the only one, but I actually did every single one of your tutorials multiple times and have finally transitioned professionally into motion graphics. I just wanted to tell you and everybody else, it is possible to take what you learn here and become what you always wanted to be.

Here is an image I made with the models. Thanks for everything Andrew (and TEAM)!

Love these models Andrew!

E3D and VR are a good match when you start to get your head around it. Ironically I did a video for Star Wars Day in VR as a bit of experimentation just before you released these models...

I think I need a better graphics card given the render times I'm encountering lol.

Thank you for all the inspiration Andrew. I've grown to love AE with all the tutorials and plugins you have provided over the years.

Love your work :)

Aux Channels......Channel 1 and play with rotation sliders....
    Vance
Had to bring the model into Cinema 4D to assign the wings their own material... The good news is that their rotation axis is already properly centered. If you don't have cinema 4D, bring the .obj file into blender. I assigned a new material to the top left and bottom right wing, and a new material to the top right and bottom left. That way I only needed to use two aux channels for animation in Element 3D

The first photo with the BB8 is really amazing. Does anyone know how the reflectivity on the droid and the glass eye is set up? Hey! I implemented one of your brilliant models here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4hzmwj/i_made_a_unity_demo_to_check_out_the_official/

And people thought it was a lot of fun. So did I.

Unfortunately, the API I developed it in (Unity) did not have a simple support for all your various material textures, and I had to mod it out a little. There's also a small shift on the left wing which is fixed now. But it still looks damned good and flows smoothly.

PM me on reddit if you have any questions. Thanks for the stuff!

a tut on how you accomplished that last pict (the 2 droids in the corridor) from scratch to final composit would be very cool. Lighting and compositing a single object on a surface or neutral BG with element3d is pretty clear thanks to the many tuts you've made so far but a full scene with 3d environment is something I'd not think to do in E3D probably because there's not much info on how to approach that. At least as far as I know.
Thanks Andrew and VC crew for the fun freebies!!

First thing I tried was rigging BB8 with aux channels, but they didn't work correctly. I hadn't realized aux channels 1&2 were already set, because they don't show up in the drop-down, within Element's Scene UI. Regardless, BB8's head axises with itself (instead of his body) so I hit RESET within the Effects Pallet, but those undeclared Aux Channels would not clear. However, they DO clear within Element's Scene Setup UI. Just right click on the model layer and select Reset Aux Animation. NOW you can rig BB8's head to axis his body. Hope that helps someone out there...and thanks again!

Awesome. Thanks so much, Andrew and Video Copilot! Perhaps a mini animation tut using this pack would be helpful to stem the tide of questions :)

It's a great pack. All the model look really great. Has anyone been able to animate the parts of R2D2 using the Aux Channels? Please tell me how you did it.
My attempts have parts going all over the place. And I can't seem to get the anchor points set right or something ...
Thanks VC for this tool.

Andrew and the VC team, thanks for this! Very cool. One question - the textures are in a Direct X format (.dds) for which there is no native support on the Mac. I am hoping for one of the following:

- One of you at VC to convert and post the textures in a more universal standard (png, jpg, tiff, targa, etc)

- A representative of VC to grant permission for someone else here to do that and post a link

- A heads up on a solid, reliable utility for Mac that will allow me to do this myself. Everything I have found looks a bit sketchy.

Cheers and thank you!

to easily make these able to fire or have the lightsaber ignite, you just need to make simple animated cylinder which you can use as a preset for any model, just line it up with the muzzle or hilt.

i meant animated in 3ds max or c4d, also scaling down the vertices on the ends

Any tips on getting the BB8 to look a little more glossy/shinier like in Andrew's first example? I tried bumping up the reflectivity a bit. Any advice would be helpful.

What a wonder offering. These little models are great, someone should consider making a movie out of these characters and funky spaceships.

Second thoughts.... probably wouldn't be a hit....I'll stop talking :0)

Haven't downloaded the pack yet, but is there more than just the Red Leader texture for the X-Wing? If you ever feel like doing more, just check out the Studio Scale modeling forum on the RPF for reference.

Scale it up and zoom a camera inside of it. You're probably just looking at the exterior.

HELP! seriously...I have a paid, legit, latest version of Element 3D and using the latest AE on windows 7. I can open Element 3D from within AE and use it just fine but for the life of me I can not find the folders to install the star wars models in. Hidden Files and Folders are set to show but there is no Documents/VideoCopilot/Models folder that I can find. Am I a idiot?? Could someone please post the full file path of where to install these at? thanks!

I dont have those folders. Can someone please post the full file path of where the star wars models are supposed to go? thanks. the FULL path please. the only Videocopilot folder I can find is in the Program Files Adobe/Adobe AFter Effects CC 2015/Support Files/Plug-ins/VideoCopilot. the only thing in there is Element.aex. there is not Documents/VideoCopilot/Models folder path anywhere. I can't even find a Models folder anywhere with a system search.

As some inspiration, this is a project we made earlier this year. I wish we had this model pack and saber at the time! All rendering was done in Element.

My corridor model will not work. Is anyone else having this issue?

Great work Andrew and team!
Be sure that you have the inside Star_Wars_Pack Folder directly in the Documents/VideoCopilot/Models folder, not two Star_Wars_Pack Folders inside one another.

Had the same issue. Solution is to have the Star_Wars_Pack Folder directly in the Documents/VideoCopilot/Models folder, not two Star_Wars_Pack Folders inside one another.

My corridor not working either. All the other models are ok. When I try to load the corridor, all the materials are loaded but no geometry - interface & vertices and faces counts are both 0. Also, the geometry objects inside the corridor folder are are all in red - because it cant find the geometry? Looking inside the file folder in explorer, the E3D file is there. I'm trying this on PC - could this be something in translation form Mac?
