could you make a text tutorial seeing thru a video, something really cool like the existing tutorial 147, you have already of light rays, the same concept but the text now see thru a video of something else there. I really liked this tutorial. It got me started into fractal noise. But hey one thing. That expression you put on the cc sphere made the sphere rotate away from the camera, not towards the camera

Hi all. When I open my save file and analyze camera the tracker does not detect my previous 3d camera which is already in the composition instead when I click track points to add solid the option says to create new camera and solid. this messes up with my current composition and makes a 2nd camera when I click. Please help.

so why don't you try to make tutorials with a 3D program such cinema 4D ,3Dsmax , Maya ETC, you are an intelligent person .bye the way that was just a suggestion .thank u very much for everything. sincerely Zafar

I really liked this tutorial. It got me started into fractal noise. But hey one thing. That expression you put on the cc sphere made the sphere rotate away from the camera, not towards the camera. Haha, I had to watch that part over and over to figure out what the expression was doing, because in my logic it wouldn't work if the expression told the sphere to rotate towards the camera. Haha you probably already figured that out, but anyway I loved the vid!!!

So I get about halfway into the vid (finishing the first building) and then Andrew says pre comp those specific layers. Every time I do that, my tracking data messes up and I can't place a later on the back buildings without having to make another camera, and that will just ruin the first building. Tips? thx

Very great tutorial, Andrew.

One quick question: on 18:14 you go to the "camera data" layer and the tracking points appear. In my case the tracking points not appearing after clicking the layer and the Camera Tracker effect.

I would like to mention (to people looking for damaged stock footage etc) that I understand some people will look at pics and think, "Damn! The perspective isn't right, I wish I could use it but it just wouldn't work"... Well... Andrew (I hope you're reading this you mother lover) made a tutorial called 3D City (linked below) which explores the process of taking an image and manipulating it with corner pins to 'build' a flat texture.

The reason I hope you're reading this Andrew, is, I've noticed a lot of your tuts have great potential to expand on, via a quick description and/or links to related tutorials, which could/would be valuable resources used in conjunction with the 'current' tutorial. Not only expanding the communities knowledge, but also generating more hits per visit on your site... Maybe that's something you could do in future posts? :)

Valuable resource below ;)

Andrew,

Thank you for another fantastic tutorial! I read below that this was footage you shot yourself, which leads me to a multi-part question:

Do you have other aerial footage you might be willing to share with us in the near future?

For those of us without access to an aerial photography helicopter, can you recommend a stock footage site that might have similar fly-thru-style footage?

Thank you!

THIS IS A MAGIC TUTORIAL FOR A MAGIC EFFECT !!!

I love it !

I want to damage buildings by myself instead of always using the same damage layer that Andrew gave in the file. but i don't know how to find other damage jpg. Can you help me please in order to make my own damaged city ?

Thanks a lot Master !
    Hello MickEditor.
To get your own stock footage is rather simple.
Do a quick Google Image Search for "building damage"
Find some buildings that might match your scene. Download the image, and bring it into Photoshop.
Mask around an area and then copy and paste it into its own layer.
Then Add some feathering to it, and save it out, and then bring it into your AE project.
    Wa-La instant stock footage.
    (Watch out for copyrighted images)

Very nice tut!
Question:
How do I add E3D models to the footage?
E.g. have an extra building in the front or similar.
Do I tie that model to a null, and tie that null to the tracking data or similar?
    Lasse Bauer
If others are interested, I found the solution:
Select 3 points or use the red target plane, and then right-click to create a null.
Then use that null as parent to a new solid, and add E3D to that solid as normal. Voil.

If others are interested, I found the solution:
Go to the Tracker effect on your footage layer.

I'm using AE-CS6, and everything in this super tutorial is working except one thing (boggling my mind).
I cannot make the "Damage' layer use the Foreground Building Mask for the 'Alpha Inverted' Track Matte for the obscured building in back.
Is this perhaps a CS6 vs CC issue?
Awesome tutorial!

I'd like to know, would you create like an overall color correction tutorial?
I'd really like to imitate the "orange and teal" look you see in movies.
I don't know if it will be doable in AE, but maybe you, the master of vfx that you are, can figure it out somehow.
Or just use Resolve or smth.

Tyler A... Yes, you could be right. Thanks for the tip. I have CS5 so I have Mocha. Getting the parallax visible in the "destruction" layers would be easy. Not sure how you'd get the "destruction" jpeg to change its own perspective with the camera movement, though.

Only one way to find out, I guess.

Earlier I used to use Ae for small projects. I thought one day I'll make things like this. Soon I understood that this kind of amazing work can only be done in Very good PCs (workstations):\ If I try to make this {my brother have ActionEssentials 2(it's awesome)} then it will take months to make and years to render.
But one day I'll definitely make these kind of things (more awesome than these).

Not really. You don't need to solve a camera to do this tutorial. You can use planar tracking and basic rotoscoping and just a little extra tweaking to get the perceived parallaxing between layers for the depth in the holes. There's several routes you can take to achieve the same result. Mocha for AE is a great option.

Everybody already know the shortcut, Andrew
    5 years ago
It helps slow me down some.
    I agree with Andrew.
Also, doing lesson's myself on a regular basis, I have found where a LOT of people do not know all the shortcuts. Heck I do not know them all, and have them written down, so when I use them in my lesson, I tell people what I am doing, as so lot to loose them in the process.

Have to slow down a little, makes it a lot nicer for the students, when a teacher is willing to take the time to show them where everything is at.

Keep it going Andrew, you are, and always will be, the best!

I dont want to sound like i am suggesting anything but i am suggesting something. How awesome would Destruction be as an Element 3D Add on Like aircraft and guns and schtuff? love this tutorial but kept thinking, man if that was an element 3D kit with moving parts? it would sell like hot cakes in a all girls prison...hmm well it would sell good anyway, i mean destruction kit? chicks in prison? pancakes, you know what i'm talking about :P

Awesome tutorial. You make it look effortless!

I was wondering how you come up with the damaged pics? Was it from real pics of old buildings? Or did you make them in Photoshop? Or?

Andrew, you're great!! On behalf of indie filmmakers, I can't tell you how much your products and tutorials have helped bridge the production value divide. I have been waiting and waiting for a destructive city tutorial since the metropolitan pack came out, so that I could apply it to our web series, Bad To The Jones. Check us out if you ever get a chance: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1sfkhewJt7s

Thanks for the tutorial! And a tip for you Andrew if you did not know (probably did but maybe others do not) i sometimes see you copying position of one object to another to get them to match or other workarounds. If you hold SHIFT while you parent one to the other, it will move the child to the location of the parent, along with adjusting all the keyframes as well. Then you can unparent (if you don't need it actually parented) and it will retain its place in space. Works with both the dropdowns and the "pick-Hwhip".

Thanks again for the great tutorial!

This is great Andrew...your teaching technique has changed a little for the better....nice and measured, allowing me to see more of what you are doing, and explaining the little things in more detail. I found this easier to absorb than other tutorials. I like this style a whole lot better. Keep it up for future tuts.

If I can, I'd like to make some additional suggestions to people for really pushing the realism of these effects.

He covered a lot of things in a very short amount of time, all of the techniques he went through will get you through shots like this quickly and effectively. For those occasions when you need/want to put in some more realism, remember one thing: it isn't enough to match COLOR to footage. If you want it to look like the shot was FILMED in-camera you have to match a couple other things.

Blur is important. Notice how sharp and crisp the destruction holes are on the buildings, both int he foreground and in the background. The buildings aren't in sharp focus like that though, especially aerial footage, that's never really the case because of the nature of how it was shot. Put a fast blur on your pre-composed destruction layers, and just make an educated guess as to how much is enough to match the blur amounts of the footage. It'll REALLY help sell it as something filmed, but even more so you should add:

Noise. The benefit of adding the blur before is two-fold: you've not only matched the blur levels of the footage, but now you've kinda blurred out the noise from your stock pictures or clips. Now you can go back after matching blur to matching the noise levels and intensity. Depending on your shot, you may have more filmic noise or grain than something more digital, but you'll be able to get away with a lot depending on how big or small your visual effect is. But again, once you get the noise to where you think it should be: add another blur. Add like a .3 to .7 pixel fast blur on top, so that your NOISE isn't completely sharp either. It's all just about looking at your source footage and then your effect, and getting them to a middle point.

One last thing I would suggest is matching chromatic abberation/color fringing. Ideally, this should be done BEFORE you add the noise, because if you do it afterwards you are going to be affecting the noise itself, which isn't realistic. You may even want to put this BEFORE the initial fast blur, depending on how blurred out it is. Always think about noise/grain as the final layer that goes on top of your effect (with final color correction being the exception). There are a couple plug-ins that'll do it for you, check out aescriptsDOTcom for some, or google tutorials on achieving the look in Ae manually.

Thanks Andrew for another great tutorial! It's the ones like this that are going to help take a lot of people's skill to the next level of quality, and also hopefully get some people to be more creative in their visual effects; have more fun with the work and not just see it as a chore to rush through. Many people see things like this in films and think: "Wow, I have to master Maya and Rayfire for three years before I can do that!" There's so much you can do with what you have, you just need to think outside the box. Visual effects can still be fun and imaginative!

Thanks for showing this composition. Even though you've shown these techniques before, it's really inspirational and appreciated to see how you can apply these techniques to different applications so I can envision different uses. I actually love trying to guess how you are going to do a certain effect before you do it to see if I'm thinking the same...my kids find it funny to listen in..."alpha inverted...pre-comp and MOVE all attributes" etc Thanks for what you do!
