Are you upgrading to After Effects CS3?

Who is upgrading and when? Although I plan to continue creating tutorials that utilize the core functions of After Effects, how many of you would be interested in CS3 new feature tutorials? I've already done one and I have a few planned. One idea is for a tutorial that covers using the puppet tool with live action footage and by motion tracking the footage you can create a cool 2-dimensional motion capture for animated cartoon characters. This is just one of many new tutorials I have planned.

Personally I think the new version is very impressive and they got rid of the whole pro and non pro business, so there is only one version and all the plug-ins are installed. Do yourself a favor, check out the new features and download the demo.

I have already upgraded, but hey whats the hurry, I got both 7 and CS3 you know doing a work flow, as most of my plugins don't work for CS3. So staying put with 7 Still. CS3 is good tho loads of functions, now my head is getting mashed. Somebody call security before I blow up New York....ooh sorry thought I was Peter Petrilli from Heroes. My bad. Good work tho Andy... Woody n Buzz would be pleased.

Also, first time posting so I just want to say a big thanks for the amazing tutorials that you've posted up, I know I and many others out there really appreciate the work you do on them.

Also, the CS3 Master Collection has new bonus software like Ultra (for keying) and OnLocation (direct monitoring and recording to a laptop). So even though I just bought CS2, I'll be upgrading to CS3 next week. So bring on those tutes! (And thanks again.)

Note to those who can't afford the upgrade:
Don't forget that students (no matter how old we are) can get incredible discounts at places like Academic Superstore. (How about $1,500 off the price of the full Master?) You just need to be enrolled in one class to qualify. Think about taking one class - any class - just to get the discount.

I use the CS2 production studio bundle now and will most definately upgrade to the CS3 Master Collection as soon as I possibly can. I find myself always upgrading to the latest software versions of the programs I use in order to stay upgraded with the latest technology and features available. To me, any software version upgrade is really worth it, even thou there might not be that many new features since they often fix various bugs, speed things up etc. But in my eyes, the new CS3 versions of the adobe programs all have very large updates to them, with new features, new tools etc. So I would really recomend everyone who uses these or any of the programs in the Adobe suite to upgrade to the CS3 version of that particular program! I??´ve tested the BETA version and they are AWESOME!!

And again, Andrew, you??´ve heard it many times before, and I simply have to say it again, YOU ROCK!!

Thanks Dew!!! I found out that there are quite a few plugins that will NOT work in cs3. Trapcode, and genarts have a re-registration feature like you were talking about though, so that is a huge relief!!! Are you ever going to show the tutorial for the video where Sam shoots the submachine gun and it has the bullets that kind of "streak" out of the barrell. Also the one where the guy gets shot like 10 times and blood flies everywhere. I thought they were going to be in Serious Effects and Compositing, but I don't think they are.

For my part, I'm a hobbyist and early 2006 invested in Production Studio Premium. As a mere (?) hobbyist it's not likely I'll be upgrading any time soon as it's just not cost effective for a hobby. Unless some windfall comes my way of course.

Given the standard timescales for these things I reasomably expect to upgrade to CS4 when it comes along assuming an upgrade path exists from production Studio (1?).

So for me, as much as I'm interested in CS3 functionality and seeing it in action I'll not be making best use of any tutorials on it in the near future.

I'm in the video production business and use ae to enhance videos. don't think I will upgrade now unless I can equal or more of what ae pro 7 does for me now. I know many here are wanting new tut but would ask let's stick to the roots with extra tut like cs3. my .2

I am currently waiting for After Effects CS3 to come in the mail, and I would be very interested in tutorials that showcase the new features.
I am not going to be upgrading for a while as well. I have checked over the new features and it dos not seem to be much just a few new plugins. Also Premiere pro does not have many brand new features to go wild about. I can't see at this stage what advantages I will get from buying the cs3 package, as on Vista Quicktime files still do not work with After Effects such as flash frames and what looks like data corruptions.

I am back on XP and the Video Premium 2.0 suite works great. What would the main benefits to upgrding to cs3 be as the ??£700 upgrade does not seem to be huge product updates across the cs3 video premium.

And could you please do a tornado tutorial?

Hey Andrew, Maybe you can answer this question for me: I have trapcodes shine, lux, and particular plugins, as well as walkerfx, and several other of my favorite plugins. Will I be able to use these with cs3? If not, I am going to wait on the upgrade, because I don't have the money to buy them again. P.S.- I think that most of us are never going to use cartoons in live action. I know I probably never will. I appreciate the cool idea and all, but I think your other tutorial Ideas cater to a much wider audience. How about showing some editing styles in Premiere, and showing the workflow between AFX. and Premiere? How about one where you show people how to shoot decent footage for AFX? Or one where you show us different exporting types, and the best way to render video for: web, t.v. HDTV, portable, and finnaly the big screen. Also please talk about pro quality processing, and how to process video for high quality projectors. P.S. Andrew, one of my movies is playing at the Bijou here in Eugene Oregon. I used your suicide tut to blow someones head off. Can't wait to see it on the big screen!!!!!!! Sorry for the long posts I'll stop talking now......

I've done a couple shorts where motion tracked live action was transformed into live and it's always been a bit of a pain, but still didn't take all that long. So when I saw the puppet tool feature in cs3 I immediately thought how valuable it'd be. A tutorial on working with motion tracking and the puppet tool would be awesome. http://www.vimeo.com/clip:168689

Okay, finally, just checked the Adobe website to make sure, the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium IS available. I had preordered and haven't received it yet....so first thing Monday I'm on the phone. I have used the Serious Magic components for several years (Ultra2 and DVRack) and would recommend it on that basis. The workflow using DVRack is absolutely great! Direct to disk recording with all the filtering is really improving the workflow in my small studio.

It will be interesting to see how chromakeying will change with Keylight and Ultra together in the same package. So, a few tutorials showing the best approach there would be nice!

I would like to see import/export/rendering tutorials between the products (AE & PPro) too.

M.

i ordered cs3 and it is amazing. i think it would be best for you to use the most current version of ae for you tutorials. its not too expensive for people to upgrade, and if they're serious about video and film then they would.

I just bought ae7 six months ago and graduated from college 1 month ago.

in a perfect world i'd have cs3, but it'll be cs4 or later by the time i upgrade. i still need automatic duck (only downside to having a mac) and more ram.

and i'm editing a documentary/getting ready to move to LA in January.

so i'll be sticking with ae7 for a while. i'd be down with looking at some cool features for cs3; i might as well know what it can do so that someday i can do it. just don't leave us ae7 people behind!

I'll wait 3-6 months time but I will be upgrading to CS3 by the end of this year.

THAT, I'd really like to see. I'm upgrading to CS3 as soon as it's released here. Just the way faster render times makes me wanna upgrade. And of course the puppet tool. I think you can make some pretty cool stuff with that. With AFX7 you can build your own IK-system in a way, but probably not as well as with the puppet tool.

I haven't seen it in action yet, so if you could show us a tutorial, that'd be awesome! Thanks man.

+1 for upgrading soon. Mainly because I'm only on 7.0 std at the mo, and I'm switching to Mac.

Just weighing up whether to get FCS or the Adobe bundle. FCS is looking attractive to me because I shoot HD to P2 cards, which Premiere Pro still doesn't support natively.

But, of course, Motion is no match for AE... and there's no other app on the planet that can compete with Photoshop.

I'm at a loss. I may just get AE and PS separately. Damn I wish I was still a student...

I am upgrading aswell... Not sure when! However, I am very interested in the puppet tool with live action tutorial.. sounds interesting!
I'm not sure. Whilst there is new functionality, there is not that much compared to AE7 Pro. The reason I will eventually upgrade is that A) I want the rest of the apps in the master series (around $1350 AUD for the Education Edition) and B) I want it all for the Mac, not for PC. Having to swap computers halfway through a job is quite difficult (i.e. pre-vis in final cut, rendering out, then waiting for the darn file to transfer!). So I'll probably upgrade when I can afford it, but I think Cinema 4D is on the shopping list first.

I like the idea of poor mans motion capture! You (anyone) might be interested in something I saw the other day, the 'http://www.organicmotion.com/" rel="nofollow">organic motion capture'. Markerless Motion Capture for everyone!
