I'm Sorry Shape Layers! I love you!
I must confess… I was never a big fan of shape layers…  we just didn’t get along.  I was used to using masks but suddenly (around AE CS3) the same mask tool began creating Red vector shapes. At first, they seemed cool enough but after accidentally adding shape layers to my comps, instead of masks, I lashed […]

Fantastic tutorial, especially if you follow it all the way through. My understanding of AE and speed through which I can get through tutorials has increased on a logarithmic scale going through the VC tutorials.

That being said, I have a technical question: while the rain looks awesome, the drops don't coalesce when they hit each other, unlike what would happen with water running down a vertical (essentially 2D) plane. It almost gives the water drops a look of being pushed into Z space, since they never 'hit' each other. Is there an effect in AE or other plugin that would allow the water drops to look like they were hitting each other? Thanks!

Hellow Andrew I following this tuturial, but i have a problem with "Collapse Transformation" why the area not fit at mask layer if i turn on the Collapse Transformation.

I try this at After FX cc 2014, but if i try with After Fx cs6 is working fine, the area fit to the layer.

I'm sure I can't be the only one to think of this, but if you duplicate the water layer, tint one of them red, and then ride the opacity, you can get a pretty good dripping blood effect out of it.

I have no idea when or how this would be valuable, but it's inspiring to try it out.

For the last 42 years I have been lecturing and in the last few years doing tutorials on image editing, and have seen it all. I have to say that Andrew's tutorials are the best I have ever seen. He has the best blend of teaching, satire, and humor that makes you want to come back for more and more. If I had a student starting in After Effects, I would have them come to this site, work through the basic turtorials, then work from tutorial 1 through 163 which has just posted. Then buy everything Andrew has to supliment their work. Great job to Andrew and all his crew. Keep up the good work. You are the MacGyver of Special Effects.

Hey Andrew,
Technical question. I notice in your tutorials that you use the PC controls when using AE. Have you always used Windows PC's. If so, what makes them better to work AE on than a Mac OS system. I am a Mac user since 1988 and haven't looked back, but if the PC is a better fit I'd appreciate some input.
Thanks again for all you do.
He use a windows pc....I thinks is a HP Z800
    1 month ago
    Hi TJ,
Andrew has mentioned a while back that the PC yields more performance when it comes down to price, and showcased his Z800 (which made me drool). Then Film Riot went PC and made a video about it saying that for the money, they literally had no choice but to move over from Mac now that 4K was a 'thing'. I suppose if you have limitless funds, you can get a powerful Mac and 'never look back', or you could build a MONSTER rendering machine and create the future!

Disclaimer: The thoughts of my rambling mind are not necessarily the thoughts or views of Video Copilot

Thanks for the input Roger and Wayne. Hard to change, but you can't argue with power and a good price.

At work, our studio is all Mac, but I've always chosen the PC route for my home workstation, so I've got a great view of both systems. Mac is great, but, at least to me, Apple's support for the professional market seems to be eroding... makes me wary of banking on their hardware.

If I had to pick a favorite, PC would edge out in most categories for one reason or another, but as always... work in the system that is most productive for you... trying Windows couldn't hurt... and with Windows 10, many Mac-like features have begun to turn up. Flipping from one OS to the other every day never feels awkward to me anyway...

you know what really amazes me everytime is how easily you find a name for precomps . I'd love a tutorial on how to call precomps. Every time I precomp I go one level up and think: ok so this is going to have the same name as the one inside but it's going to be called xxx _MAIN and then 5 mins later I find out I need to precopm again, and again, ...and then not only I need a name that makes sense for the new precomp, but I also need to rename the ones inside whose names now don't make sense any longer!!! c?mon!! How do you do that??? I'm sure you rename and re-record every tutorial over and over just because you also screw up names while progressing !

I just gave it a try. This was something I wanted to learn. But for some reason my camera lens blur effect barely blurs anything in the picture.
    Alex
Hey, check the resolution of your file. It is probably way bigger than your comp (which should be at most 1080p for learning purposes). If you use a very big file as a background and you scaled it down a bunch to fit your comp size, then just precomp the background with move all attributes checked and apply the camera lens blur to this precomp.

If your comp is like 4k or something huge, you need to really dial up the numbers for the blur, but it will get extremely slow, so I don't recommend that.

Hey whatsup? I'am a vfx designer in my country, working on some cinema projects and other things and i didnt take any training about that. I mean, i didn't go university or course for this job. It was just my hobby and since i found the VideoCopilot, that hobby grew up seriously. Learned alot things, cool tricks and all that time i combined these tricks together piece by piece. Of course sometimes i needed to watch any other channels for some different tutorials but mostly VC! So that way, in a couple of years i found myself as a designer, taking jobs some production companies etc. And i am still learning new things, this is an endless way. And i own that mostly Andrew Kramer, just wanna share. :) Thx for the tutorial.

Hey by the way, that FX Console! its a REAL ADDICTION man. :D Using it since first day and I forgot to built-in fx search engine. If you say that: allright its not free now and price is 340509347593745 dollars, i buy it becouse worth it. :D

Do they really learn from breaking project files down? I don't think so!
    Nevertheless, it's your shot.
    Alex
@Dayo Lawal: they do, i do, i learn a lot of seeing why people use that effect or a different one, why they chose a specific value for an effect or something similar. Sometimes you find no Video but a Project File and you can learn a lot from it
    Dayo Lawal
@Alex, in the event where there's no tutorial to teach you how, having the project file might not being a bad idea. But c'mon, Andrew Kramer always delivers on tutorials. He even takes them as if everyone is new to after effects. Explaining every basic step.
If a person can learn from simplified tutorials as the ones Andrew does, won't the project files themselves be harder to figure out?
    Nick
@Dayo Lawal. I know many people that have the hardest time following along and learn better by rooting around inside someone's pre-made project. (I personally learn by following along, but I understand why project files are necessary.)

I’ve learned over time the busier I get the less time I have to play in After Effects and the more I just have to buckle down and work. So I guess that means I haven’t actually done anything outside of work for maybe well over a year plus. Heck I only had time to watch this as I was waiting on an hour long render. lol

My point is, Andrew is way busier than the rest of us so I’m curious to see what relevance this has to either a future project, or a future movie. I also noticed from his comment on the change of the name of tools in the latest AE CC2017… he is as impressed with some of the upgrades as I am. I’m curious to know if he is experiencing some of the latest weird bugs that I am to that never showed up in the last several versions. Lower 3D layers, effecting upper 3D layers when effects are added for one.

Anywho, Great tut, can’t wait to see where this leads and thanks for the funky tip on the strange tint. That was actually pretty cool. I liked it :0)

Thanks for another great one Andrew! Fun to see raindrops 2.0 :)
I was thinking if you could do a expression for the Camera Blur to do the reverse value of the blur amount. And I found the trick!
If you link Layer Bs Blur to be negativ from the Layer As blur. You could have one layers blur to be the opposite from the other without having to keyframe two layers. Off course

    maxBlur = 20;
    maxBlur-thisComp.layer("Layer A").effect("Fast Blur")("Blurriness");

I guess Dan describes it better here

    Thanks!
