Once again Mr Kramer you amaze me. Backlight is brilliant. But I have one prob. Maybe simple to some. I use a 4k backight image as an environment, but still seems out of focus. I normally have a 3d model ( simple sphere), in the centre and the environment and reflection, BUT the environment seems to be out of focus rather than crisp clear. Can anyone help please?

I also cannot get them to work. have watched the portion of the YouTube video about backlight (see Harry Ortiz comment below) but it just doesn't work like that for me. I add in a backlight, it's in the scene, but no matter how close I move it to any other objects I just can't get it to affect them. There must be some switch or something I'm missing. Please help, a 30 second tutorial, a sentence, a hint, a clue...anything would be helpful...pretty please. Thanks in advance!

Listen, I guess I'm still a noob, trying hard not to be, but I just got Element 2 and Backlight, and I can't figure out how to use Backlight. It seems like it's just assumed you know what to do with this stuff. I...don't. And there are no tutorials or instructions of any kind anywhere that I can find.

Hi Andrew,
Does BackLight work as a standalone 3D pack ? I plan to use it in C4D...
or do I need to purchase Element 3D v2 to use it?
Thanx

Hey, Andrew: Nice work. You are talented
and entertaining. I love the smart mouth comments
you toss in during training; very funny. Congrats on all your sucessss
and by the way, your family is beautiful. I want to know
if you can devevlope super hero packs and training. I was thinking
people might be able to produce their own Ironmsn, Bat man, ext, but can't
afford a costume or production effects. Can you work on that? I mean think of
all the things one would need to produce an original super hero and developer
special action packs, costoms that can be tracked on and customized, effect packs, element 3D
packs, Nuke traibung, Cinema 4D training and super hero classes, like
Lifting, flying, teleporting, fighting, vanishing, swimming, ext. This way
folks can produce their own super hero movie. Can you imagine
what you can do with your training, body of work and skilss? Seriously, you are the king
of visual effects. So in a nutshell.

A. Superhero pack and training
B. Villian pack and training
C. Super effects pack and training
D. Costume pack and training
E. Props pack and training
F. Super hero worlds and training
G.Super hero city and training
H.Superhero power pack and training
I. Super hero and villian vehicles pack, planes, cars,
boats,

You can also do the same for. Space movie.
The possibilities are endless.

Regards
Lol, keep up the work and the jokes are funny!

Can those light arrays in Backlight be animated to blink randomly? I can build that kind of thing in optical flares of course, but naturally I would rather do it the easy way, if it's an option.

I want to put Movie Texuture in 3D some part.

Import the video into AE and set it as a custom layer in Element, then that layer is available inside of the texture slots in the E3D UI.

OK. I have been coming on over and over since 2:30 this morning to download the new Elements. I checked the calendar and yes it is really the 2nd. It is now 3:30 and I still can't find the download! OK. where is it? I looked under my pillow where I once found money after losing a tooth as a little girl. Now I want to put money under your pillow and can't seem to be able to spend it...what's up?

Is this "BackLight" going to be any different then what Element 3d is currently able to do. I mean you can already take any picture and use it as reflection. Oh!, maybe they are combining it with the additional lighting to create lighting from your picture? That would be nice.
Lord Edington
I'm assuming it's this...

http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2012/11/tutorial-image-based-lighting-with-element-3d/

...but it's integrated into V2 and you just check a box to turn it on or something. Rather than duplicating copies of Element, and doing this and that to make it work.
Alex
That was just a small hack using a really blurred environment with reflective materials.
Back in Element v1 you could only get mirror-like reflections on objects so that was the only way to simulate some lighting being cast from the environment. Right now it's not a checkbox, it's a different shader that lets you blur the reflections together with the specularity. What this basically means is you can still get mirror-like reflections, but you can also simulate some diffuse material that gets lighten by the environment just by turning up the glossiness slider.
Lord Edington
Although the blurred reflections and the material properties of the shaders/textures is a new (and important) feature in V2, and does relate to the way lighting interacts with the different textures... this is slightly different, as it relates to images being used as a light source.

For the people who just come to the latest thread and post questions about techniques and ideas that have already been covered:

People... This site has ran for YEARS... It contains HUNDREDS of tutorials, vast amounts of content, and answers to your questions. This place is a labour of love. A central 'hub' for the VFX community which has a purpose... To further YOUR education, whilst providing tools that enhance your AE prowess, taking your work to new levels.

Animating, masking, tracking, compositing, camera movement, workflow and so much more is covered within these pages. The techniques that are shown on this site don't rely on the perfect scene, rarely NEED you to purchase ANYTHING, and even the scenes used for each tutorial are merely 'content' required to deliver the tutorials methods, and are not compulsory.

Please... Take time to wander through this site... Think of it like, the greatest location you've ever been to on this planet, don't rush through without stopping to do some sightseeing, pause once in a while to take in the scenery, it's a wonderful place filled with exciting visuals and information.

And... You can have a 'vacation' here anytime you like, and stay for as long as you like... For FREE!

Andrew is our teacher, and the product page alone implies that he is a BUSY man... If he's here answering your questions, he's not making awesome stuff for the rest of us.

To summarize.. Come here whenever you want. Enjoy the offerings. Consider purchasing some of the most awesome AE tools available to date. And last but not least, don't upset the natives! (they may post something like this)

Yes! I have had plenty of questions over the years (that's why I come here, it has answers). But I've always browsed the site for answers before asking on a random, unrelated thread.

And I admit, occasionally some people have asked appropriate questions on relevant threads which have lead to my enlightenment in the past.

How about the VRAM usage Andrew? 8K is very crisp and all good. But I don't know if I should go with those 6GB VRAM cards. I currently have a GTX 680 4 GB. Man these are amazing images, thanks for all.
Haha! Yes of course this is something to manage. In most cases you can get away with just 2K resolution. But there are cases when you need to zoom in and see more of the background so we wanted to make the resolution available.

Everything you do with OpenGL and Element 3D should be considerate of memory useage. I have lot of tips for optimizing that I'll be posting on launch day!

i guess in E3D V3 you guys will indroduce Ray-traced reflections and refractions.
Who knows... right now ray tracing is still relatively slow even on high-end systems. The amount of samples required to create a noise-free image still requires minutes per frame to render. The results are great but we want to focus on speed!

We want to make as many features possible, but only if we can do it fast! That is what we tried to do with E3D V2.

Koz
And still doesn't. These were both replies to heywood and they show up as regular comments. And I'm not talking about shadows cast from AE lights, I was asking about when use of Env Maps on PBS is the sole source of illumination.

Regardless Andrew cleared it up...
Koz
The 'reply' wasn't working
@Koz Can't 'reply'

Yes the objects self shadow... You can see it on the first E3DV2 video when Andrew animates the spaceships thrusters
Koz
"The environments create diffuse and specular lighting. To get shadows to cast, I just put a spot light or parallel light into the position of the light source. This makes it easier to control the affect of the shadow to match your scene."

Gotcha. But my concern is more about object self shadowing, meaning will the light from the environment map be blocked an objects geometry so it doesn't go "through" one of the objects materials and shine light where there shouldn't be? (The way E3DV1 currently works, I run into this problem a lot obviously, since it doesn't support shadows)
You can control all of these things! This is actually something we worked very hard on. There is a control called "Light Influence" that basically blends the shadow and light together. This way you can have dark shadows or blended shadows that look like global illumination. Look at all the previous examples and you can see it working.
Koz
This is very cool...you thought of everything
Koz
I'm guessing this is a no, but when lighting using only these environment maps, do shadows still work?
The environments create diffuse and specular lighting. To get shadows to cast, I just put a spot light or parallel light into the position of the light source. This makes it easier to control the affect of the shadow to match your scene.
_Terry
I don't think you used the words "Image Based Lighting" just for show so I'm we are going to have something like the IBL tutorial built in to fully harvest the package.
No need! The new physical shader system literally does it automatically. Check out the video link at the bottom. Environments now create lighting and reflections in your scene. Plus we added tons of new options to the environment to make it easier to control the look.

The way to think about it is like a virtual world. Your 3D objects are inside of the virtual world so whatever you set for the environment map to will affect everything inside the virtual world.

So if you environment map has blue, the scene will have a blue cast of light. You can also add lights on top of it.

I'll be making a demo video soon, just didn't have time yet!

Are the light elements shown separate items that can be added to environment and/or reflection maps? or are they just showing the lights that are used in some of the environments?

Thanks! They are 2 different things. The lights maps can be added and placed inside your 3D scene.
Lasse Bauer
Maybe I´m slow, but I´m a bit lost here:
That hi-tech gizmo featured in all the pics; is that simply a clever way of showing how the backgrounds reflect on the objects placed in the environment/background...or does the gizmo have any significance?
In other words; are these "simply" cool 360 degree dome backgrounds - and the tech gizmo is just VC´s version of the sphere that normally is used when showing HDRI backgrounds?
Yes exactly, it is just a fun way to show off the affects of the environments. In fact, there are no lights in that scene at all. The illumination and color is generated from the maps using Element 3D V2's Physical Shaders.
Lasse Bauer
@Andrew Kramer: OK, thanks - that helps
And the last picture with the diff light types/elements; does that mean that you can pick your own light types for the background...or what does that image signify? (Told you I was slow...)
