Upcoming FX

Sam Loya is back and this time it’s temporary! Recently we took to the streets with our 2-man crew of myself and Sam Loya to shoot a fun scene where bad things happen. Shot everything handheld with a small shoulder rig, 5D and 2 lenses. (16-35 and 85mm) More updates coming soon.

    August 24th, 2012 @ 1:54 am

August 22nd, 2012 @ 7:30 pm
Poor Sam... Andrew can you have another guy who plays such a “hard”role like him and give him a rest?
August 22nd, 2012 @ 7:43 pm
I love your stuff Andrew! You've taught me so much! Are you still gonna do a tut with Sam and the Train extension you promised? We watched all of the credits on Super 8 Just to see your name! haha
August 22nd, 2012 @ 7:49 pm
Sam would make a great character actor in Hollywood. He could be the next M. Emmett Walsh. Thanks for all you guys do! Your training is priceless!
August 22nd, 2012 @ 8:06 pm
I assume Element3D will have a role in this?
    August 22nd, 2012 @ 9:44 pm
You assume pretty good, Element 3D is the bad guy in this case :D
August 22nd, 2012 @ 8:18 pm
When does Sam NOT have that angry, perplexed, furroughed-brow looked on his face?
August 22nd, 2012 @ 9:19 pm
Stage one of the roll-out for "Action Faces Essentials."
August 22nd, 2012 @ 9:48 pm
Hey Andrew,

How much do you think it would cost to get a "small shoulder rig, 5D and 2 lenses. (16-35 and 85mm?"

That sounds ideal for me for shooting small spots, ads and promos. I'll be doing semi-regularly pretty soon. :)

Thank you for help my man! I wouldn't have the job I have now without you, I feel like I should give you 10% of my paychecks. haha
    August 23rd, 2012 @ 6:49 am
Just check out B&H;in New York, if you're not into that there's this new thing out called Google. It's pretty easy to figure out how much that will cost.
    August 23rd, 2012 @ 11:34 am
ok no need to be snooty
i think he just wanted advice from a professional
    August 23rd, 2012 @ 12:04 pm
I'm sorry but I have to agree with Greg...Im sure Andrew is itching to whip the old "let me google that for you" but he's way too polite...
    August 23rd, 2012 @ 9:08 pm
    Thanks, Sebastian.

I was semi-hinting at how much his costs. Or what he might recommend that's affordable, yet still has quality. I don't Google all my life's questions.
    August 24th, 2012 @ 7:19 am
5dMrk2: 1700$ used, 16-35L: 1200$ used, 85L: 1400$ or lower for the MrkI version. The 85L is a gorgeous lens but the focus ring makes it near impossible to work with for video. You better get the 1.8 version or even better, the Zeiss.
    August 29th, 2012 @ 8:00 am

Thanks so much for your help. I made a list and will start saving a bit now.

    Thanks again!

Maybe I'm getting too old, but Avengers has the worst plot ever... maybe it doesn't have a plot at all!
Effects and 3D were good, but at the end I was glad the movie was over.

So cool! I can't Wait anymore!!!
August 23rd, 2012 @ 2:52 am
Nice photography, a really like the mood!

Here's a little animation I did yesterday, I did't do much color correction, I just wanted to focus on the animation and world creation. Everything was created using Element (everything but the modeling, wich I didn't do it either...). Before doing something serious I need to train a lot, Element basics are easy but using it well needs lot of training.

Can't wait till next tutorial!

August 23rd, 2012 @ 3:21 am
Ever think of making a few tutorials on making an indie movie on a small budget (Pleeeeeeeeeease!!!!!) :-)

August 23rd, 2012 @ 5:12 am

August 23rd, 2012 @ 5:15 am
Andrew, you need to put Sam to work harder. Each tutorial he appears, he is fatter :)
    August 23rd, 2012 @ 8:39 am
Wilson you are missing the point. The man is playing the part. He knows he is going to his doom. More fleshmore splatter effect. The man needs a medal. (not on that armhes not keeping it)
August 23rd, 2012 @ 5:24 am
Andrew, would you put this tutorial interesting technical data as:

Picture Style: Cinestyle / Standard / Flat
Process color correction
Data used in the camera: Frame Rate / Wbalance
Making-of: If you have registered

God bless you!

I'll soon be launching a website for the public of Brazil with lots VC and lots action :)

    Great idea! THAT...would be a blast :0)
August 23rd, 2012 @ 3:37 pm
Every time I watch a big budget movie these days, I always catch myself thinking "they could have totally rendered that in Element" and I'm talking shots that cost hundreds of thousands of $...still can't get over what VC achieved with this plug-in...
August 23rd, 2012 @ 5:46 pm
Any chance for a "EPIC AM LOYA" plug-in for After Effects.

Sam is always good for a laugh , though sometimes he must wonder if he is the re-incarnation of Wile-e-coyote ! , due to the amount of disasters that befall him .

Andrew is anything happening with your "Planet Matte Paintings" project ?

August 24th, 2012 @ 8:29 am
Hey, Andrew! I'm excited to see how Sam will be killed/ injured!

One request though... when you post the video(s), could you make it available on VideoCopilot’s site as well instead of on Vimeo or YouTube exclusively? For many of us users, these other sites are blocked on our workplace internet, where we access your site much of the time. This has happened a lot in the last couple of weeks, and I’m having to miss out on a lot of great material!

Just a humble request/suggestion from a raving loyal fan who would love to see everything you post! :)
    August 24th, 2012 @ 8:33 am
    Echo echo.........
    August 24th, 2012 @ 9:34 am
Hey, I figure they won't do anything until they actually realize they are excluding some of their clientele. Say something loud enough and long enough, and eventually you will be heard.
    August 24th, 2012 @ 9:48 pm
So basically wolf what you are saying is you want our boys to help you pretend you are working at your day job when really you are slacking and watching videos all day??? They work special effectsNOT miracles lol

On the up side for you, the most upto date tut IS on the VC tutorials page.
    August 25th, 2012 @ 3:55 am
just go through the blog you'll find all the videos u've seen on youtube.... and if you are looking for tutorials then they right in this site in the tutorials pannel.
    August 29th, 2012 @ 11:00 am
@Christian Michael, I actually use VCP as a reference and learning tool at work. very directly related to my projects. And tutorials aren't the problem because they are hosted natively here on VCP. The problem is recent videos posted to the blog.

@Paul, I've been around on this site for a while. I know that tutorials are here on the Tutorials page. And I think you misunderstand my request. There are videos that are on YouTube or Vimeo that are embedded into the VCP Blog, but are not hosted on this site natively. And since many people's workplace internet filters out Vimeo and YouTube, these videos are unavailable.

My request is that Andrew make them available on VCP natively instead of embedding them so that everyone has a chance to view them.
    August 30th, 2012 @ 5:42 am
We can safely say if we have heard you on more than one occasion, the VC team have heard you as they watch everything that comes and goes in these posts. If you feel its that imperative to your work, then it maybe easier for your work to remove the youtube and vimeo block from your computer, then it would for the team to upload every video they post for the sake of one person. I still say you havent missed a thing.
    August 30th, 2012 @ 6:50 am
Haven't missed a thing??? I'm sorry, but I beg to differ. just take a quick glance back through the past few pages of the blog. There are YouTube and Vimeo clips all over the place. And while a tiny number of them are also available elsewhere on VCP (like the E3D demo reel), and some of them get viewed partially in say a future tutorial (Demon Cam and Shell Shocked, for example), not all of them are. There was a whole tutorial called "Environment Tips!" that was not on VCP, and multiple "example" videos.

Am I suggesting that VCP become more widely available for me only? No. That's dumb. But "for many of us users" these videos being hosted on other sites reduce the usefulness of this site. Several times in the forum, you will find the words "due to network restrictions..." or "my workplace internet..." and other variations of the idea that stuff linked in the forum from other sites are generally blocked for many of us frequent users.

On a lighter note, trying to get my workplace to remove those restrictions would be like trying to ask for a movie in which Sam Loya isn't in pain, peril, or otherwise pernicious predicaments! :)
    August 30th, 2012 @ 9:47 am
Got it.... most most of the video embedded on VCP site are works of other artist... May be this is the reason why he doesn't host them in the website. And regarding blocked sites in workplace, I hope someone in your office may come up with a cool solution.
August 24th, 2012 @ 8:50 am
Look at that action-face!
August 24th, 2012 @ 9:43 am
or....you could view the videos at home like everyone else lol. come to think of it have you actually looked on the tutorials page....there are 4 new Element videos posted.
    August 24th, 2012 @ 9:55 am
Alas, I don't have home internet. And I know there are 4 new Element 3D tutorials... but there's a lot of other stuff on the blog that gets lost to youtube and vimeo.
    August 26th, 2012 @ 8:20 am
You have no home internet ? How do you plan to register the plug-in...let alone buy it ?
August 24th, 2012 @ 12:22 pm
My coworker is a spitting image of Sam, I have shopped my coworker head onto Sams in a scene or two of yours! okay, maybe not spitting...a variant could pass as a stunt double for Sam version. Good to see Sam back! looking forward to the post!
August 24th, 2012 @ 12:46 pm
Damn I am amazed by DSLRs all the time. Maybe do a talk about DSLRs and your setup once? I would definitely even pay to watch you talk about cameras, choosing cameras etc.
August 24th, 2012 @ 1:48 pm
Hey Andrew looking forward to seeing this, but I have a question. Have you ever worked with an Imax camera?
August 24th, 2012 @ 2:28 pm
Sam Loya is to Andrew Kramer what Bruce Campbell is to Sam Raimi :D

Can someone explain to me why the choice of these 2 lenses ? I'm kinda new to photography, and I want to learn what Andrew "looked for" when he decided to use these 2 lenses.
    August 28th, 2012 @ 5:15 am
I'm using same lenses 85mm f1.2 is great lens for close ups of actors face and background is out of focus usually used for portrait photography example the last picture of Sam and 16-35 "wide" lens is great lens for normal recording of video. I also prefer to shoot with 50mm f1.8 because 50mm is normal field of view what your normally see with your eyes (cheep lens, great performance, beautiful bookeh )
August 25th, 2012 @ 12:22 pm
sam !!!
You're really a good actor
Congratulations to you
Also Andrew
August 25th, 2012 @ 12:28 pm
Is this what will incorporate the winning Matte Painting Challenge ?
Steve Benson
August 25th, 2012 @ 1:26 pm

Some solid material again. I know you needed to promote Element 3D, but dang. This felt like it lost it's "kick" of being a down to earth place to learn some sweet After Effects stuff. Don't get me wrong, Element is amazing, but it was overtaking everything. Sheesh! Should have thrown in a random tutorial that had nothing to do with element in the mix, to avoid over saturation of your followers.. I found myself not checking in here as often as I usually did. Anyways, glad to see things are going well, software wise, and tutorial wise. Keep up the good work!
August 25th, 2012 @ 3:21 pm

Helo andrews and my felows
I have made this concept through looking myself and my struggling life. I know there are many other person aliked me who have million of dreams which are breaked by there competators. Why we messed our self in so much trouble why we are not obsering the truth . why we are only internes why our seniors not giving us the chance to prove ourself why there are beating us ispite of their work . I dont know bt today i realize by making this concept that life must go on with happniess many fools come many goes bt we must preapare our self for the next challanged we must be promoted .THAT's THE YOUNG GENERATION . We must be ENCOURGED
    August 27th, 2012 @ 4:51 am
Hello Hamza, I just saw your movie and it looks nice (mainly because of the FRINGE soundtrack). Can you explain in detail a bit what you are saying about broken dreams because of competitors..(or seinors)? Not that I am saying that broken dreams aren't existing.. but you comment is a little bit strange.
    August 27th, 2012 @ 9:49 am
hello Alaindeloc, A very thank you for appreciating my work besides of fringe track that I have picked through video copilot because of the feel that I get by listing this ost there a lot of themes music that I can took but every person has its own strange thing going on on his mind that he or she can describe not by worlds . My personal attention is to not hurt the other or seniors intentionally,"My Life" I have a dream to be the most go0d VFX ARTIST and for that I am working hard . but the problem is resources I am a boy from middle class family and in my country if you don't have any resources or REFERENCE of a big business man or some VIP personalities you don't have any right to do job I have given many interviews but the first question they asked is "from whom reference" in spite in some place some of my seniors after seeing my work just ASHAMED me or RIDICULE by saying your are the most stupid or use less person .Is this thing is what they are not seeing young talent that is spoiling in various fields of life.
http://www.mazminds.com.pk/ , www.heyhami.daportfolio.com ,www.youtube.com/hamya007 answer me after seeing this if you didn't see any creativity in this profile that i have made .Alot more too tell and alot more to listen .So that's my life full of failure and hopes for fulfilling my dreams. So this feeling I can't explain in worlds .And some time I am disappointed 'why me' but I will not let go my hopes INSALLAH

Is it shoot with a neutral color on your 5d?
August 29th, 2012 @ 5:18 am
Looks amazing! I am really looking forward to this. Even though this is not a "filmmaker" website. It would be cool if you could share some of the production setups for this and your other stuff. Lighting in particular.

August 29th, 2012 @ 3:45 pm
You are the secret to the force that makes movie making a goal within reach. This gets me closer to my intended goal. to tell stories without boundaries. I love everything about what you are doing. I will Impress you one day.

The jokes about Sam are real funny and everything, but some are wearing kind of thin.
If you go back and look through VCP material, he's clearly is a good actor and a great "sympathetic" character.
Is there any 'legit' work that he's done that you could point us to !?!!
August 30th, 2012 @ 11:17 am
pls more tutorial Andrew... mask etc

Boys and girls....another example of being creative with Element 3D. All constructive criticism welcome.

    August 31st, 2012 @ 4:05 pm
Great work Christian. I get the idea and it would be great to see someone do a detailed tutorial. Keep em' coming!
    August 31st, 2012 @ 5:13 pm
Hello Ed and thanks for the kind words.

Thats 3 of that style I have done now, the other two can be viewed on the youtube page. A good friend of mine who does similar work, and he has put two tutorials together now, and very well I might add. Although he (Josh) has chosen a different subject, once you grasp how element extrudes, bevels and can add layers of bevels in the same group....your imagination begins to put it together for you.

You can find Josh's tutorials at this link. Feel free to leave him a comment.

and my other two videos can be seen here.

    Enjoy :0)

Pretty cool Mick. I'm an oldie all new to this and this (and some of your others works) is inspiring stuff to give me ideas on how I want to approach AF. I've read some of your comments in the past of the guys just wanting more of the AK freebies and couldn't agree more. There are more than enough tuts in here as it is. Thanks again mate
    September 3rd, 2012 @ 1:22 am
Thank you :) it is similar technique I use long time ago for height maps in Bryce 3D (Bryce3d 5.5 is free now ) for creating futuristic city. Difference is that Element3D give u more control over "height" extrusion , in Bryce is controlled by White is Tall, Black is Low, Shades of gray are In Between. Thank you one more time :)

A bit like the promised 'Train Vanishing point' promised a couple of months back? unless this is said tutorial? maybe a teaser video would ease a bit of this tension? although I expect the man is busy on Pro stuff as has been a good week since we've heard from him. Patience is a virtue but suspense is more dramatic.
    September 2nd, 2012 @ 8:52 am
I have never seen such a bunch of entitled, selfish whiners. AK doesn't give you enough as it is? You have to criticize the fact he hasn't kept giving you more for free? He doesn't deserve a life or career of his own, right? He should spend 2000 hours a day, dump his family and live for making sure you have everything he has and know everything he knows.. FOR FREE? Why don't you make your own FX? Why not compose your own "Train Vanishing Point"? Why not show some gratitude and respect and just wait until AK is damn good and ready (if ever) to give away his work for free to so many undeserving, snotty brats?

@Onyxfire, I think you ought to reread the rules on posting; specifically the bit that says "angry or hateful remarking is also forbidden".
    September 3rd, 2012 @ 9:35 am
I'm in complete agreement with onyxfire. I had an identical discussion here only a few blogs ago. I fail to understand how after all these hundreds of tutorials that are out, why the "I want I want I want" people out there cant put two and two together and work it out. Granted there are new people out there, some move faster than others and respectable genuine questions are embraced by the community. But to frequently EXPECT continuous free material in the way of free models, MORE tuts on the blogs becomes.....old.
That said, when I read the post above by onyxfire, even I thought whoa.....knock the attitude back a inch sunshine. I DO agree with him/her (never assume) although the approach was a little over the top.

    September 3rd, 2012 @ 9:42 am
and for the record ShahabG (the original poster) I dont think this discussion is aimed at you at all. you just got caught in the cross fire lol

    September 3rd, 2012 @ 5:33 pm
@Christian Michael while I appreciate where you're coming from, I'm afraid I don't agree in regards to Onyxfire's comment (which as you point out was rather nastily directed at myself rather than the original poster), people have every right to express their desire to see new content. When you have a hit show such as this you have to expect the fans to be hungry for the next episode. That desire is the life blood of this whole site, it's what brings people back here day after day, and I find it odd that it should be so aggressively criticized, in my opinion the frankly disgraceful tone in onyxfire's post is much more damaging to this site than requests and speculation on future content.

If you actually read my post (I agree I could have phrased the opening line better), it is merely speculation on the possible content on offer from this upcoming tut and suggestion for the original poster to be patient. I even suggested AK's current quietness is most likely down to him doing his Professional work, which is hardly a demand for him to give up his career and family to make tuts 24/7... ...or pre-assembled jigsaw puzzles.

"@Onyxfire, I think you ought to reread the rules on posting; specifically the bit that says 'angry or hateful remarking is also forbidden'."

Noted, but so is "beg[ing] for content or tutorials". I agree with Onyxfire's sentiment, although not with the delivery. No matter how valid your point is (which it was), if you put it harshly then it is unlikely your target audience (in this case K.E.T. & Co.) will listen. Still, I hope folks will remember how much AK gives back to us mere mortals.
    September 3rd, 2012 @ 7:05 pm
    Hold the bloody phone! lol

K-E-T, I did read your post and was in complete agreement with what you wrote. However I also didnt think for one minute onyx's comment was directed towards you. As If I did I would have sat back and just watched you rip him/her a new backside! I read his post (although poorly placed) as directed at what seems like continues disregard for the work and effort that is put out by all you guys, the better halved twin included.

I dont disagree a healthy interest in new tuts is a good thing for the site, absofriggin'lutely a great thing. But for the members who seem to think its "expected" and that this is all the work you guys have to do? There is a difference between a healthy interest and feeling it's an entitlement.

If you back track on previous posts I have made in the past....I have said the exact same thing. There is more to the VC company than this site, there is also professional work to be done (not that this isnt) and you all have families too. Let the guys catch a breath.

Now back to the original subject. As rude as the comment was by onyx, I didn't feel it was directed towards you, I "think" (and I could be wrong here, its happened before and I have two ex-wife's that will agree there) I think..... it was just very poorly placed.

Are you using a 50mm prime as one of your two lenses and then a 35-108mm or something?
September 2nd, 2012 @ 5:52 am
HEY GUYS !!! Read this !! :

Andrew Kramer on twitter:
"Traveling to NYC for a couple of days. Camera Gear at the ready, Epic with Ruby wide angle lens. Shooting for a new TV intro."

Got it ?!

He does more then stay online to refresh his browser to answer every question. You guys should watch movies..do what ever else you need to do to get inspiration. Re-read the blogs for answers ...or you could press control "F" in type in key words to search blogs.

Relax !! the videos will get released when they get released , but the bills have to be paid first (new TV intro)

Until then, keep up with Christian Michael he's into some cool stuff with ELEMENT3D.

I made my first 3D model yesterday with strictly E3D...it was just a barrel container ;-) I know easy as heck..but I was inspired to try and create 3D models using only E3D "I learned a lot in the process" ...thanks Christian,Josh ;-)

Why thank you so much for the vote Hugo. Very much appreciate it. SOOOooooooo where is this barrel you speak of? :0)

September 3rd, 2012 @ 7:35 am
He may have phrased it better but I'll side with Onyxfire on his basic sentiments... there are a number of posters here who feel entitled, and just want a new toy to claim rather than do anything for themselves.

I half expect them to ask for their jigsaws to come ready-assembled as well.
    September 3rd, 2012 @ 9:04 am
I agree with Steve and Onyxfire. Instead of complaining about the frequency of free tutorials, people should be practicing, experimenting, and showing what their imagination can produce with VCP tools and techniques.

Here's my last clip, camera tracking + Element object.

Comments are welcome.

Of course I did the tracking, who else? :-) It was hard though, always had an error greater than 2 pixels... now my tracking skills are better, next clip will be longer!

Hey Andrew, the thing that always strikes me about your pictures from frames in your little shorts is how the skintones look. I know you're shooting with a 5D and some sweet glass but i'm really dying to figure out how you get those skintones the way they are..
