Medieval Shoot
March 10th, 2011

I've been working on a new project this past week involving some magic and maybe some mystery. It seems the closer I get to finishing one thing, the more needs to be done in post. I can't tell you what this actress is looking at but it is part of a promo I will share online when it is complete. There will likely be some great behind the scenes action and a few visual effects tips to share.

Btw, we shot with a new Sony F3 and a couple Optimo cinema lenses... more to follow!

Andrew thoughts on the Sony F3? I've played with it several times now and love it. Seems to handle highlights very well and the Dynamic Range is pretty nice for the price of the camera.

im wondering why do you use such expenvie cameras if your videos are gonna be 480p Quicktime movies?

have you ever heard of showreels? demo works? dvd or bluray publishing (these are purpose specifics)? what about color depth (raw 32-bit float video for better manipulation) and f-stop range (11-12 stops a good digital vs 3-4 stops a cheap handicam) ... what about resolution for better roto, to have enough room to downgrade. i've watched a vfx making of from alice in wonderland, the supervisor specificaly explained why they had to shoot 4k just because the enlargement of the red queen's head.
about that, hey andrew kramer! when are you switching to nuke? i mean, i love afx, great for motion graphics, but face it .. nuke's node based compositing, native full 3d environment (not just card like in ae), projection mapping and uv capabilities, customizability, native 32-bit float color processing and speed cannot be beaten. don't make this a marketing issue, people will still use that great lens flare plug-in, i know you're really eager in becoming a compositor in the industry, not just a motion graphic artist. don't get me wrong .. i learn tons of things from you, i love all your work and i still visit this site to get tips and tricks.

Couldn't care less about the production. Where did you get your hands on that AWESOME headband the actress is wearing? Nothing says medieval like a headband placed in the middle of the forehead. This might come as a shock to you but I am pretty certain that, judging by his own tutorials, Andrew (and most others) is quite capable of picking up on the not so well hidden irony. You got me on the way I spell my name though. How on earth could I have misspelled my own Swedish name for 35 years? So stupid of me.

Price for 7d appears to be common. If youre shooting video you may want T2i and get better lenses xc sd hc cards etc.

OMG That's so cool. How can you afford so much equiptment? I'd KILL for that crane. I use a Sony HDR-AX2000. HOW do you get color so cinematic, do you do it in AE? Cause I bought FIlm Magic and it isn't the same... But its still really nice I bought all your products. I wish I could afford to hire somebody like you to do my special effects.

F3 has a bigger sensor. Bigger resolution. Super 35mm sized. EX3 is well below the quality pumped out by the F3.

Now you are a director! Not a vfx designer! very cool product, btw. Sony is very very close to "big brand" now. Because the prices of lens is low , but the quality is ALMOST close to canon or nikkor lens. Very cool to hear that you shot with this new product. What Do you think about quality when the clips are on computer? Better than canon D1 ?

Yeah, the F3 looks like its gonna change the whole game...
Not sure if it competes with a RED, but for the price it sure does. About 1/2 of the RED I think. Did you guys buy one?

Red is maybe more expensive... But sony is so Expensive if you compare it to other cameras like the Panasonic AF101 and the RED Scarlet... When the Epic S35 is released it would costs cheaper than the Sony which will put the Sony aside. I guess if Sony do not re-think about re-pricing the camera they are gonna lose that battle nine times out of ten... the Epic shots so much better and it is gonna be cheaper than the sony...
