Tron Project and Walk-Through

Holy Monday batman! I decided to release the Tron-Pilot Project file created in After Effects with a short video walk-through. I talk about creating the 3D text and building a few expressions. It doesn’t demonstrate every little detail but it should be enough to help you through the project file. For the background blur, try using a photo of a city with the After Effects lens blur.

    3Q very much
    January 24th, 2011 @ 1:27 am
Definitely enjoyed seeing how you went about your extrusion technique. It's interesting to see how many ways you can go about doing the same thing. There's another expression off the top of my head for extruding text in AE that uses a similar process (adding the expression to the position, duplicating layers and leaving the uppermost layer without an expression) . I'm sure you've seen it around.

It'd be nice to see a tutorial based on extrusion expressions like this one and theone you used. Just a thought haha!!

January 23rd, 2011 @ 11:35 pm
awesome job andrew. I was wondering how you managed to get the extrusion on the layers. Thought you might have used form and the ofset the time of the animation. Good tip though. Oh BTW where did you get the expression for the comp copy?

You are the man,

But my good man, can you please publish a tutorial strictly on expressions, from the basics to the more advanced. What I mean here is, e.g. when should I know when to use wiggle, time, and the rest of the other complex stuff, if you know what I mean. If could list a few examples such as e.g again, time; when you are trying to blah blah. Wiggle, when you are trying to blah blah.

Get the the point. I have noticed that once one understand expressions, after effects rocks.

I tried to listen to other online tutorials about this and the guys are just lousy, it's like a physics lesson.

You tutorials are the best.

But any
    January 24th, 2011 @ 7:35 am

Thanks Andrew...

Best work again.. Chears .. :)
January 24th, 2011 @ 4:47 am
where is the skript, that multiplies the comps for the other letters?
its not in the download. there is just the Free_Tron.aep.

    January 24th, 2011 @ 5:02 am
I think you must copy it directly from tutorial, is not write in the folder with project file.
    January 24th, 2011 @ 3:28 pm
you have to buy it - they give an indication of what they'd like for it, but you set your own price
January 24th, 2011 @ 5:10 am
I think your next tutorial should be an animated younger Jeff Bridges :)
January 24th, 2011 @ 5:36 am
I love the new approach to the 3D extrusion. makes it also a bit translucent. I sometimes use the shatter-effect to make Real 3D text, but that was before I got the Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator. Also a pretty sleek plugin.
January 24th, 2011 @ 5:40 am
Nice AK! Can't wait to watch this one at home (at work right now lol) Hopefully packed with jokes. When are we looking at the Galaxy warp orb tut? That one looks especially awesome!
January 24th, 2011 @ 5:52 am
pretty basic text extrusion but, as always, just a bit extra with the strokes and dots.

also nice to see how you control the extrusion exactly the same way as I do it :P
January 24th, 2011 @ 6:19 am
Yay! Thanks Mr. Kramer.
January 24th, 2011 @ 6:23 am
AWSOME! I will buy a comp script for this forsure. Finaly the way to make 3d titles and the expresion is quite simple to remember. Your are officialy the best, Andrew Kramer :) Always a step ahead.

Andrew, are you still doing thinkgs for Fringe & JJ Abrams? I watch last episode and i feel your hand on it an im not talking about open sequence !?

    January 24th, 2011 @ 11:08 am
same feeling here about fringe! :D
January 24th, 2011 @ 6:27 am
will there be a tutorial on this? i hope there will be.. :)
January 24th, 2011 @ 6:38 am
Any chance of posting the project saved in CS3 version?
January 24th, 2011 @ 6:47 am
Thank You Man So Much.
I will try the project after a few minutes.
and Please make a tutorial about Galactics orb.
Thank You Again.
Good Luck...
January 24th, 2011 @ 7:12 am

January 24th, 2011 @ 7:38 am
Awesome! wait it for a really long time from christmas. thank you
January 24th, 2011 @ 7:50 am
hi andrew!
you were mentioning a script that allows you to duplicate a comp with all the dependencies, but that you edit the video...
do you have the link (or the name) of that script ?
January 24th, 2011 @ 7:59 am
AWESOME ! Thanks AK . but Where Galactic Orb tutorials?!

January 24th, 2011 @ 9:17 am
Thanks Andrew. (Picture the "In a World" trailer voice guy....) ahem.... In a world where everyone wants something for nothing.... One man steps up to the plate to share his knowledge freely with the minions.

That is font and video too.
January 24th, 2011 @ 11:36 am
Question I have for you Mr. Kramer is when will Optical Flares be available in 3D? It seems TRON feels that this is a possibility - if you watch the film... ;-)

THankyou for another great tutorial (or whatever you want to call this one!)

January 24th, 2011 @ 12:34 pm
hahaha! the HD VCR joke is funny to me b-cuz I had and old friend that was convinced that Blu-ray VCR's were on there way! pretty sure he is still clinging to the faith there. u would'nt by any chance knw him?;)
January 24th, 2011 @ 12:57 pm
Thanks!! Always look forward to the new tutorials.
January 24th, 2011 @ 1:07 pm
great job. my AAE cs4 miss some footages ;/... this is problem of plugins ? ;/ i dont have any ideas .
    January 24th, 2011 @ 1:32 pm
Try to download the project again. It does use Optical Flares and you will see an error message if you do not have that plug-in. But just disable the "Optical Flares" Layers and it should work. Also It may be using a font that is not available but you can change the font to something else like Arial.

January 24th, 2011 @ 1:53 pm
Hey Andrew!
I decided to use your project for a production for my school in Germany. Could I do this?
    February 1st, 2011 @ 2:40 am
    Yes, you can my child!
January 24th, 2011 @ 2:04 pm
I just had the "tutorial" going while I was working and I have to say, if ANYTHING, I'm walking away with the awesomeness of Vegas. That's such a cool plugin that I didn't know existed! I'm pumped to incorporate it into some effects.
January 24th, 2011 @ 2:33 pm
Great how you've taken inspiration of the Tron intro and did it your own way instead of doing an exact copy like most other examples. Thanks for the Vegas idea too!
January 24th, 2011 @ 4:02 pm
The tip with the strokes and matte is really cool. I always forget about that vegas effect...Thanks VCP
January 24th, 2011 @ 4:26 pm

January 25th, 2011 @ 10:14 am
Hey Andrew, just a question>

¿Why are you still using AE CS4?
¿Are you tired of using CS5?

Thanks Andrew! I love your creative solutions to things like this, and I wanted you to know that your time is always appreciated. I wish I had kept my C++ skills sharp because I would love to work with you. Alas, I'm too rusty, I fear. Best wishes to you and the VCP team!
January 25th, 2011 @ 1:10 pm
thanx andrew fo this tutorial
its very nice
thanx again
January 25th, 2011 @ 3:55 pm
Hey Andrew
First, I'd just like to thank you so much for posting this for us
I have two questions though, both may seem weird or vague
First, what font are you using, cuz I'm pretty sure that it's not typograph pro
Second, how do you actually make it look good? I know its vague, but I'm just a young teenager getting started in After Effects, and when I made this, it looked really bad and fake, the lines were too rigid, colours too weird, etc, so I was wondering if you could give me (the entire video copilot community) a few tips on just generally improving both our motion graphics and our video FX skills, just to polish our finished product
Thanks so much again for being such an inspiration to me and the rest of our community, keep on working :-)
January 25th, 2011 @ 5:46 pm
Awesome, Andrew! You're amazing!

January 26th, 2011 @ 6:45 am
Hi, cheers for this tutorial. Really quite simple when you get to the bones of it but I just never ever would have thought of it.
January 26th, 2011 @ 10:34 am
thanks Andrew...
January 26th, 2011 @ 6:19 pm
Thanks so much, you've finally revealed the secret of making 3D titles in After Effects!
January 26th, 2011 @ 7:38 pm
Is it normal that the optical flares doesn't work? And that there's alot of errors? Do I have to buy anything?

January 26th, 2011 @ 9:57 pm
Andrew, I must humbly beg of you...

Please make a tutorial, please.

I never download project files, it goes against my technique. And your tutorials are always so dang awesome. I can learn such awesome things by going through them several times, deviating a little bit more each time to get something new.
I would be indebted to you for a rather long (though unspecified) period of time, should you make a tutorial out of this.

Much respect.
January 27th, 2011 @ 12:37 am

Awesome TUT!!! Thankyou VERY MUCH!!! Does anyone here know an AE tutorial for creating the Tron Light Streak effect that emits light ribbons off the bikes on TRON LEGACY? ( I guess Im asking alot huh? LOL!) I watched the VCP tuts on light streaks 1 and 2 here at VCP, but they do not show how to emit these light ribbons off text objects or graphic objects... Any help is appreciated please email me at Thanks. Thanks again VCP and if you made a good tutorial on this Im sure we would be in your debt forever and we would all subscribe for it too... TANKS!

Vegas! Damn it why didn't i think of vegas. I almost cracked it. i made it 90% similar except for those lines running through the extrusions! i used Trapcode's Form and got 95%similar results but it either had too strong effect or too scarce look. Plus i know u majorly use the built in efects and that why i was banging my head on my table thinking how to do this with built in effects.

January 27th, 2011 @ 10:25 am
another great one Mr. Kramer, i saw another expression to do the same thing but it was a hell of a book (i mean too many lines), but this one was a tiny cool one, Thank you very much. and i came up with an expression to make the opacity to be decreased as i duplicate it and make a gradual fade out along the axis. Here it is:

value+[index-100]*-1-[index*write any value you want here, this defines the step of opacity differences between two layers]

and if you can enhance it (that you can for sure) please post it so we'll use it.

Thanks in advance

Andrew Kramer must be an Alien..
Mohammad Bagher Mohaqeq
January 27th, 2011 @ 11:31 am
I forgot to mention above in the expression that we should set the opacity to Zero and then add the expression, and this expression should be used with the expression you showed in the tron project.
January 27th, 2011 @ 1:14 pm
WOW this is crazy... good stuff
January 27th, 2011 @ 1:46 pm
Yeah !! but I didn't understand why you didn't consider this as a tutorial !! I think this was greaeaaaaaaaaaat

January 29th, 2011 @ 4:25 pm
Hey, awesome work! This video is really cool! I was looking for something like this as I need to do this kind of effect at work.
I was wondering if you were planing on doing a tutorial for a video like this one from razer's Tron mouse:

The video in itself covers a lot of special effects and would be really interesting if it was explained.
Thanks a lot for this video!
January 29th, 2011 @ 8:10 pm

Heey man great tutorial! What about some more C4D or 3DS Max tutorials though? Would be greatly appriciated! :D
I also think this particular effect would be easier to do in one of those 3D programs.

it is good andrew......

Andrew I've just started learning nuke, and I realise that you concentrate on motion graphics as opposed to compositing; but seriously, I suggest you pick up a node based program and show us some proper compositing. I mean AE can do it, but it just doesn't compare to the likes of Foundry Nuke. Just a suggestion...

how was Andrew able to rotate with the orbit tool without a camera in his project? The orbit tool would not work for me unless I added one.

March 4th, 2011 @ 4:47 am
The sounds used in this one reminded me of X-Men or something like that. Would maybe have been cooler with those hornes blowing (From the soundtrack) but I'm guessing this was made for copyright reasons.
Anywho ... Loved it! :D

I definetley enjoyed this "tutorial" even though i'm curious about the look of the real text. Andrew somehow worked with masks and alot of vegas+glow effects. I can't figure out how to change the "video copilot" to my own text since i don't understand what the masks are for.
May 7th, 2011 @ 12:18 am
anyone got a cs3 or cs4 version of this???

August 7th, 2011 @ 10:52 pm
You have a very nice and motivating posting style, it makes me read your articles with great interest.
August 21st, 2011 @ 9:03 pm
Hi the tutorial doesn't seem to work. It opens and nothing shows up in the preview part. I don't have optical flares but even removing that doesn't help. Thanks.
August 30th, 2011 @ 12:18 pm
Love the tutorial!

P.S. Does anyone know what I can do to put the FX on the new Comp 2 after Putting in all the letters? They're all there...and all white. But when I add the tint and glow FX...nothing happens. Has anyone had the same problem?
    August 30th, 2011 @ 2:30 pm
