Galactic Orb

I’m brewing up a new motion graphics tutorial that features a super-zoom from the inside of this galaxy ball left over from the movie Men in Black or somewhere. It’s got some interesting tips for creating energy unlike anything we have done before, plus all effects done inside of After Effects. Stay tuned!

    January 17th, 2011 @ 3:33 pm
I always try to be the last one to comment but people after me keep adding comments and it would be rude to keep posting but to get on topic. I was just making a cool clip using Optical Flares pro presets 2 and for everyone that reads this you're missing out on something great if you don't buy it from VC.
    January 17th, 2011 @ 4:55 pm
I can actually use this. Its amazing.
I'm working on a 3D World. This can be the floating orb I'm looking for to keep the camera near whilst moving about before the orb exploding into smaller "Dont know yet".

    January 17th, 2011 @ 3:49 pm
Wow, looks awesome! Definitely can't wait to hear the new random comments from Andrew.
I tried to pick on what Andrew did but I just have a rough idea of what all took to make this.
    I see:
    CC Particle World
    Fractal noise
    CC Sphere
mhmm, I like how you made the flashes on the sides to make it more dramatic! Did you used solids, and added a glow and changed the transform mode? (OF)?
    Anyways, it looks really good!
THANK YOU for bringing us these great products and tutorials!

I cant even begin to express my gratitude to you for this monster of a site, let alone a n inspirational training are truly a god amongst AE men and i pray you never leave us.

Im super excited about this new TUT as its something i have always wanted to do but didnt know where to start.

Do you think that at some time in the future you could expand on this universe effect and make a TUT that shows us how to create space scenes along the lines of what we see in sci-fi movies like star trek and aliens? planets atmospheres nebulas etc? anything like that would be greatly appreciated.

best to you, your fam and the VC crew!

January 17th, 2011 @ 6:01 am
Let me guess, smoky texture (possibly fractal noise) coupled with cc sphere effect, overlayed a couple of times with different evolution settings (to create the reflection). Then you did a couple particular effects, w/ motion blur, zoomed the camera in, keyframed to zoom out. You added Optical Flares along for the ride, some generic smoky textures (for the energy inside), and bam. There you have it. Energy; Orb.
January 17th, 2011 @ 6:02 am
Very Nice...., Can’t wait the tutorial
January 17th, 2011 @ 6:04 am

Recently in your work seen less training techniques. Training sessions are repeated, or combination of techniques will provide a duplicate. We expect from you is high. To wait for better quality training stay

January 17th, 2011 @ 10:06 am
January 17th, 2011 @ 10:12 am
As always, sir, Andrew is spreading Vfx to the world..
January 17th, 2011 @ 10:17 am
here's how i think he did it:
1 big lens flare,
2 particle system... trapcode or AE's 3D particle,
3 distorted noise fractals duplicated several times and
make them 3D layers,
4 animation trucks hard in Z space,
5 another big flare,
6 one final noise fractal with an AE spherized plugin to created the orb,
7 some standardize glows and some outrageous color and

pretty sure he used some some sweet and sour pork somewhere.hehe
January 17th, 2011 @ 10:18 am
sometimes I see something on videocopilot like this and I think to myself "Man I wish I thought of that".

That looks great as a company logo or ident. Fantastic as usuall...

Amazing! I love forward to this! :)
January 17th, 2011 @ 10:33 am

Silver Dance
January 17th, 2011 @ 10:45 am
hi guys of video copilot nice video tutorials and amazing DVDs
thank u Andrew to show for us the way..
January 17th, 2011 @ 11:11 am
Was that a standard AE lens flare? Weird.
    January 17th, 2011 @ 11:13 am
It was the standard flare! Just try to do as much as possible with the built-in tools.
    January 19th, 2011 @ 9:04 pm
Nice catch! Didn't even see that until I DL'd it because of the frame rate.

Well played, Andrew! It takes great wisdom to see past the tools to the final product.
January 17th, 2011 @ 11:15 am
Ya ya, I use a lot of orbs in tutorials! :) I like them. But it's more of an icon, it could be a 3D letter in a logo or an eyeball that we zoom out of. I just make things shiny but the principles and techniques are far reaching. In a Galaxy far far away.
January 17th, 2011 @ 11:39 am
That's look Awesome AK, but when you gonna upload the Tron Legacy Intro? well, i wanna see both tuto...
January 17th, 2011 @ 12:24 pm
Andrew i am always amazed at how your colors pop out, when i try it to do anything my colors remain dull even in my photo-shop work. I am not sure how i can improve.. any advice?
    January 17th, 2011 @ 12:57 pm
One of the things I like to do is choose saturated complementary colors. Adding contrast and flashes help to make things look polished. Orbs naturally seem tangible.
    January 17th, 2011 @ 3:10 pm
Thank you for your reply. I get frustrated and discouraged after doing some work and its not as polished as i would want it to be.
    January 17th, 2011 @ 4:58 pm
Here should be a cool video for you to watch man:

Just remember, it takes a steady amount of time to get that b.s. curve work out the way. Just as long as you don't give up, it'll cue up. I believe this because it's just now happening in my life and i've been on and off w/ ae for 4 years now :D
    January 18th, 2011 @ 9:54 am
That was a cool video man very inspirational, thank you for the words of encouragement. I am going back to the basic tutorials here on VC. Sir Lyndon stay blessed.
January 17th, 2011 @ 12:28 pm

January 18th, 2011 @ 10:56 am
hey andrew im a big fan and im just curious i watched this over and over again so amazed but i remembered some other things you thought me and is those light streaks just kind of like the sparks in tutorial 65 or 66 i think but in revers instead of going out it goes into the middle and the gasses are just new layers that you put as red and black like in your tutorial on that globe where you made that smokey lookk
and you added some things from optical flares and that orb is just like the glass oorb tutorial sorry if its the comments long and is the the blue and red things just outside the orb like the light thing in the earth tutorial but instead u mask it out and that part that kind of circles the orb is like the planet explosion but you mask it out to give it that effect omg this comments really long please reply if im right in some of these :) im just wondering since i watched all of your videos and you always say that puting some of the videos together would be a good idea oh and can i ask what uni or college i can go to for video editor i know i kind of have a long way till i go to university since im only 13 :/ but still i would like to know what would be the best to go to like where you went again im so sorry for the long comment i hope you agree to post it in the comments box and can i ask what if my computer has a problem and everything gets wiped out and i bought one of your products well my parents for and i downloaded it instead of the dvd can i re download it or do i have to buy it again since i always have problems with my computer thanks andrew big fan :) and a late Happy New Year

@ Andrew - What ever happened to quicktips? I loved those, short sweet, and didn't take a ton of time to watch... as I get busier and busier, I love seeing helpful and creative videos, but short enough I can squeeze in when I have a few minutes of down time...

January 19th, 2011 @ 3:40 pm
Nice, graphics look really nice as usual!
Just the sound-design seem a bit too heavy and timed off for the visuals in my opinion...

But i think galaxy studio's in belgium would love your logo reveal :)
(maybe you can have Darcy Proper do some mastering... wouldnt that be sweet)
January 19th, 2011 @ 5:46 pm
I am still waiting the TRON tuto, but anyway this is cool too
January 19th, 2011 @ 6:29 pm
For those of you who are curious about how he did this:
CC particle world with a negative velocity, line particles, possibly multiple particle systems, some fractal noise and a CC sphere combined with some turbulent distortion as well as more particle systems and fractal noise behind the sphere, probably quite a bit of tint and curves for colorizing and a some glow shaders, most likely stacked to create the strong smooth energy feel.
The first part seems to have one large fractal field with an animated scale property and a CC particle world on top and then a CC sphere or CC circle on top of that for the bright white glow in the middle.
sweet work, can't wait to see what techniques and little tricks he uses
January 19th, 2011 @ 8:30 pm
January 20th, 2011 @ 12:28 am
January 20th, 2011 @ 2:13 am hi andrew i was inspired by your galaxy projects so i come up with this. what do you think?

Teach me great one, GIVE ME THE POWER!!!!!

Awsome stuff
January 20th, 2011 @ 6:56 am
Andrew. If you cant make us a Tron Tutorial please give us a project file :(. how did you do a 3d letters without 3d program... pleaaaaseeee
    January 20th, 2011 @ 8:38 am
one word shatter just do this
make the text then make a new white later then go click shatter drga it to a new layer put the shape into custome
and then pick the txt u made know go to properties and mess with the tickness know all you have to do is stop it from shattering loll
    January 21st, 2011 @ 2:31 am
    thx.i will try it.
January 20th, 2011 @ 8:00 am
if you guys can't wait for the Tron tut here's one simply way you could do it:

> create the Tron logo in Adobe Illustrator_ you'll have put each letter on a separate layer;

> import the graphic into AE and make each letter 3D layers;

> add a camera and animate each letter in Z space and mess around with the rotation properties;

> colorize your font if you like with AE's 'Fill' filter;

> add some glows on the logo and some Video Copilot lens flares in the background;

> turn on your motion blur button for each letter so you get some blur as your logo flies into frame.

> place an adjustment layer to the top of your comp and add a 'spherize' distortion filter. this will give you the cool warpy look as the logo exits the frame.

That's it. Ofcourse if you want some thickness to your logo
you could always duplicate a few times and lower the opacity.
    January 20th, 2011 @ 8:40 am
all that i know. what i dont is how Andrew make this 3d letters that have ..."extrude"(im not sure if this is the word). i know the trick with Z space.but in tron tutorial, letters got normal 3d look. not faked :). i hope you know what i mean.
January 20th, 2011 @ 8:29 am
Wow! ,, that's look awesome! <3
January 20th, 2011 @ 8:47 am
try making the logo with paths_you could do this with the pen tool. then apply trapcode 'Stroke' plugin. i think there's a
property that allows you could achieve the affect.
January 20th, 2011 @ 9:42 am
about time you posted a new tutorial
January 20th, 2011 @ 10:23 am

Saw this advert for VW Passat at the cinema, and it has a very Similar Galactic Orb effect. Couldn't find an English clip.

I think Andrew Kramer's looks more interesting, but an interesting use I thought.
January 20th, 2011 @ 8:33 pm

Looking forward to this one, my next project is creating an emerging Galaxy (Big Bang type thing) I may use this instead for the opening prologue of a stage musical.... Can't wait!! Use the Force Kramer!!
January 21st, 2011 @ 12:04 pm
Listen, I have thought up other way for a logo of the Tron. We can make each letter in a separated layers with 3D Invigorator plug-in... Each letter will become in 3D... And Then we mix it by the same. Also we add a glow...
And here our Logo!)))) And also we can add a distortion
January 21st, 2011 @ 12:11 pm
I'm currently working on a flying through space project and this tut will totally help me fill in some gaps. You're THE MAN... as well as some sort of cosmic mind reader cuz i literally told my friend that "I wish Andrew Kramer would have a tut on flying out of a galaxy or something, cuz i need some inspiration and lil technical help." AND BOOM!!! like a genie from a lamp, you appear to save the day. Your efforts are very much appreciated. Thank You.

Andrew already has a life...the intro he made for FRINGE, he can probably send his grandchildren to collage with that money. Get off this website and start mopping floors.
January 22nd, 2011 @ 7:18 am
Hi, andrew. I suggest that you should start a competition between videocopilot viewers. I've seen a lot of videos that was similar(very similar) to yours and i hate it because they were not original(yours is). I think it's going bad this time since they lost the creativity and all they do is depend on your ideas.
January 22nd, 2011 @ 9:17 am
I can't wait for the tutorial!
January 22nd, 2011 @ 12:36 pm
Dude as always, awesome work. A while back I was tired of looking for starfields for my planet backgrounds and was thinking it would be cool to use the actual celestial sphere as an environment. Well, it exists, and in h-res, and it's here:
